• Stop using flash? Or improve the flash experience?

  I'd like to setup my Ubuntu to work without Flash (= not installed), but still be able to view videos on sites like Youtube, wisevid, etc. I want to try this because recently Flash has crashed a couple times. It also often 'feels' sluggish. Also a couple other flash related questions here got me thinking there might be a better way of doing things. So how should i do this? Note: Answers that have flash + work-arounds are also welcome.

• Will polishing my current project be a better learning experience than starting a new one?

  I started programming many years ago. Now I'm trying to make games. I have read many recommendations to start cloning some well known games like galaga, tetris, arkanoid, etc. I have also read that I should go for the whole game (including menus, sound, score, etc.). Yesterday I finished the first complete version of my arkanoid clone. But it is far from over. I can still work on it for months (I program as a hobby in my free time) implementing a screen resolution switcher, remap of the control keys, power-ups falling from broken bricks, and a huge etc. But I do not want to be forever learning how to clone ONE game. I have the urge to get to the next clone in order to apply some design ideas I have come upon while developing this arkanoid clone (at the same time I am reading the GoF book and much source code from Ludum Dare 21 game contest). So the question is: Should I keep improving the arkanoid clone until it has all the features the original game had? or should I move to the next clone (there are almost infinite games to clone) and start mending the things I did wrong with the previous clone? This can be a very subjective question, so please restrain the answers to the most effective way to learn how to make my own games (not cloning someone ideas). Thank you! CLARIFICATION In order to clarify what I have implemented I make this list: Features implemented: Bouncing capabilities (the ball bounces on walls, on bricks, and on the bar). Sounds when bouncing on bricks and the bar, and when the player wins or loses. Basic title menu (new game and exit only). Also in-game menu and win/lose menus. Only three levels, but the map system is so easy I do not think it will teach me much (am I wrong?). Features not-implemented: Power-ups when breaking the bricks. Complex bricks (with more than one "hit point" and invincible). Better graphics (I am not really good at it). Programming polishing (use more intensively the design patterns). I wondered what was the fastest (optimal) path to learn. 1) implement the not-implemented features in this project which is getting big, or 2) make a new game which probably will teach me those lessons and new ones. ANSWER I choose @ashes999 answer because, in my case, I think I should polish more and try to "ship" the game.   It's hard when a piece of marketing software offers an affiliate program to ever find an objective review of it, so I thought I might try on Quora. It just boggles my mind that it can only cost $97 flat, when other SEO or keyword research tools like Wordtracker cost almost the same PER MONTH, and don't seem to offer much, if anything, more... Can anyone explain this, and would anyone recommend Market Samurai WITHOUT posting a link to it in their review? :)

• How do I get the same dual-screen experience on my install as I had on the 12.04 Live CD?

  I downloaded, burned to disc, and booted Ubuntu 12.04 Precise (I defected to Arch for a year when I got fed up of Natty). I was pleasantly surprised by both of my monitors working perfectly on there (needed to rearrange as my secondary monitor is to the left, however). So I installed. There's no recognition of the second monitor now, and it doesn't appear in the settings. I've also enabled the Nvidia driver. What do I do?

• What has been your experience with paid support from Canonical ?

  I am considering buying "Ubuntu Desktop Support" from Canonical for 2 reasons: I have a couple of issues that I would like professional help with. ( Specifically a recurring kernel panic, and a slow wireless connection. ) I would like to lend a helping hand toward supporting Ubuntu financially. However, I am a bit worried that once I transfer the money, they will end up just referring me to the bug tracker on Launchpad. Also, free support options like this site have the pleasant property that they are open to the internet, meaning that if my issue gets fixed, it is more likely to help others with the same problem. What does paying for support from Canonical actually get you ?

• Joining a company to get experience vs. going alone [closed]

  My goal is to build a successful web startup, say the next Digg or Twitter, and I am in doubt regarding what is the best route to follow as a programmer. I see basically two options: Get an internship/job with an established online company, so that I could get a mentor and learn from more experienced programmers, learn their processes, methodology and so on. I could do this for 1-2 years, and then quit to start working on my own stuff. Start working on my own projects right away, starting with small ones and moving up gradually. This would give me more control on the things I would be working with, but I would lack contact with more experienced people, so I would need to figure basic things on my own. Doing both is not an option in my opinion, cause I would need to put a lot of effort/time into each if I was to learn/improve as a programmer. So is one route definitely better than the other? Is there a third one I am not considering? Background: I already work by myself developing content-based websites and doing SEO, and I am decent at it so money is not a problem. Last year I started learning to program, first by myself and now I enrolled in a CS degree on a good university.

• Is there industry demand for developers who have no GUI experience?

  Is there still demand for developers who crate software without GUI's in the industry? Are jobs still in demand? I only ask because I write a lot of software for myself in C. I mainly use FreeBSD without a GUI. My software is for data mining, automation and marketing purposes most of the time as this is the field I work in. I find that a GUI is not needed and I feel comfortable working within a console. I've never worked for a company as a programmer, but in the industry do you have dedicated programmers who work exclusively on the GUI's and other who write the logic?

Basically, this will hold all the tasks that developers will be assigned when developing UI elements for a web application. • What does it mean to "have experience with the Unix/Linux command line"? [closed]

  I'm a new comp sci grad applying to jobs, and this requirement confuses me, especially since the job description (Python back-end developer) says it's the single most important thing ("Everything else we can teach you!") I mean, I know how to use the command line... I know your standard run-of-the-mill stuff like navigating around and manipulating files and permissions and using pipes and running applications, but what are they looking for when they say something like that? I'm aware there's no end to what you can do with the command line, but I was under the impression that after a certain point it's the sort of thing that only benefits server/system administrators.

  Bonjour, Je lance ce débat pour parler d'ActivePerl. En fait, il y a quelques années, il n' y avait que la version 5.8 (pour ne pas parler de la 5.6) qui évoluée régulièrement. Pendant ce temps, le développement de la 5.10 suivait son cours. Puis, nous nous sommes retrouvés avec 2 versions en évolutions. Il a fallu quelques mois pour espérer avoir nos sympathiques modules Perl du CPAN compatibles sur les deux versions. Maintenant la politique d'ActivePerl est de proposer une version stable chaque année. C'est intéressant car Perl est très maintenu et évolue bien, mais sincèrement, on se retrouve avec x versions de Perl et on s'y perd. Actuellement, il y a 4 versions d'ActivePerl 5.8, 5.10, 5.12 et 5.14, et je ne parle pas de Perl6, Parro...

• How do you ensure consistent experience across multiple graphics cards (or even driver versions)?

  So I was writing a simple 2D game with OpenGL and SDL and had this problem when there was awful tearing when running in windowed mode (even though I explicitly asked SDL_SetVideoMode to use double buffering). Didn't worry about it all too much because most of the time the game grabs the entire screen, windowed mode is just for debugging. Anyway, yesterday I updated my nVidia drivers and tearing disappeared, the game runs smooth and looks nice in windowed mode too. I can see how the problem may be in the graphics driver, but this leads to a question. Obviously, professional game developers have to deal with a lot of different hardware/software configurations. What are the techniques they use to make sure the game looks the roughly the same on different graphics cards or even the same model of graphics card, but with different driver versions?

• How to improve Primary hard disk rate on Windows 7 Experience Index?

  I’m getting confused with window 7 experience index; because on one of my home computers with 2 hard disks 7200 rpm configured with RAID 0 I got 5.9 as score on “ Disk data transfer rate “, while on another computer which had only one hard disk 7200 rpm got also 5.9 as score on “ disk data transfer rate “. Shouldn’t RAID 0 configuration means high read right IO?
