  • Windows Forms Development - Books

    So I'm reading a book for architecting applications for the enterprise from the Microsoft Press. It's a great book, and I'm learning a lot. However, it's very high level, and can be applied to a lot of different domains (not even just .NET, even though that's how the book is geared). The first project I want to develop after reading the book is a Windows Forms application in .NET 4.0. I want to use a lot of the books concepts to develop the app, but I really want a great Windows Forms dedicated book to read before starting that's really going to tell me all I need to know about developing Windows Forms apps. I found plenty of books for .NET 2.0 and stuff, but nothing for Windows Forms in the new .NET 4.0 Framework. Any suggestions?

  • Kansas City SQL Saturday 2012: BBQ Crawl

    The next Kansas City SQL Saturday is coming up on August 4th.  We’ll have the usual SQL Saturday goodness: lots of technical sessions, great networking events and a fantastic speaker dinner.  And we’ll have the Third Annual Kansas City SQL Saturday BBQ Crawl.  On Friday afternoon we’ll visit a few BBQ places in town.  We tend to order big sampler plates and just share everything around.  It’s a great way to try a variety of styles.  This year we’ll be hitting an all new selection of BBQ joints. You don’t need to be a speaker to attend.  However the call for speakers is open until June 28th (hint, hint).  Locals and out-of-towners are all welcome. If you’re interested in attending send me an email and I’ll get you added to the list. We finish in plenty of time to get you to the speaker dinner – as if you could eat any more.

  • The #OOW Party May Over...

    ...but there's no reason why we can't look forward to the next one! It's going to take all week for me to catch up on last week's neglected email, sort through the freshly-collected business cards, and generally make sense of the mad dash that is Oracle OpenWorld. So I've been playing this amazing video (produced by Lozano Productions) to remind me of the last business/IT conference marathon I survived: Collaborate 2012. It was an amazing event where we officially launched the new design of Profit and enjoyed a drink with some of our closest friends--Oracle partners, customers, and peers. Many thanks to those who came out to celebrate and who continue to help make Profit a success. It was a great time that resulted in a lot of great new work and new relationships. So I'm taking a time out to remember that the hard work is worth it. See you in Denver next year!

  • As a indie, how to protect your game?

    As a indie, you might not work in a company. And you may have a great game idea and you feel it gonna be a big success. When you released your game. How do you protect it as your own creation? So that someone also can't steal the title and publish a "sequel" e.g. Your-Game-Name 2,3,4. Or even produce by-products like Angry Birds but without your permission. So how we can prevent these from happening by legal methods. Like copyrights, trademarks? If a professional can fill us those info, it will be great.

  • Disqus 2012 comments NOT being indexed by Google

    We run a high-traffic website at http://www.onedirection.net and we've been using Disqus throughout this year, initially to great effect. We accepted the upgrade to Disqus 2012 back in June, loving the increased user experience and the better community feel - albeit back to an Iframe again. However the fact we were specifically told that the comments are now being indexed by Google was great, and the dynamic nature of the iFrame suited our site (all our pages are cached, so by using Disqus the comments are updated straight away). However, it seems that the Disqus 2012 comments are not being indexed, and we've noticed an obvious fall in traffic over the last few months. Initially we didn't put this down to Disqus and focused on other issues (Google algorithm updates etc). But we're quickly coming down the reasoning that our pages now contain less indexable text, and we are getting less traffic because of this. We've tried emailing Disqus directly but they're very slow and don't seem keen to help. Any thoughts on this?

I followed the show with a ticket to see U2s 360 concert (unlike any other spectacle in rock-and-roll). Since then, Ive often been asked, Is there going to be another SPC in 2010?. The answer is: The next one is October 3-6, 2011 in Anaheim, California.   • Should I switch my graphics mode in the BIOS to avoid using Bumblebee?

    I have just purchased a Acer 3830TG, the timeline X series. To my surprise I found out that there is no first-party support for nvidia optimus for linux. Bumblebee works great, but the battery life from the graphics card always running is not so great. I don't use linux for games so i don't really need the graphics card on, I have Windows for that. In my bios, I have the ability to change my graphics mode from switchable to integrated. If I do this, reinstall ubuntu, what will happen? Will my nvidia card just turn off? Will everything work properly, as if i'm not running an optimus laptop? Is this recommended as opposed to dealing with bumblebee? What is the best thing I could do?

  • If I were in a Silverlight focus group, here is ten things I would say.

    Silverlight is a great product right off the shelf. I use it, love it and spend a lot of time helping the community understand it. This however, doesn’t mean that I don’t think that it can get better. If I were invited to a Microsoft Focus Group about Silverlight here is 10 things I would say:  We need more navigation templates. I’ve found (4) templates that Microsoft has released (Cosmo, Windows 7, Accent and JetPack). This number needs to be around 16. In order to get more people developing for Silverlight, we need to give them a variety of templates to get them off the ground quickly. Silverlight needs to ship with the next version of Windows. At least version 4 needs to be pre-installed on Windows going forward. It’s small, in its own sandbox and I cannot find a reason for it not to be included. Silverlight needs to run on more platforms.  iOS and Android are the key here. I think Microsoft should shoot for Android first since I believe Android will take the lead in the mobile market (at least for the short-term). It would also be great to see Microsoft use Silverlight as the focus on their new tablets / “AppleTV”. I would even invest in getting it working with Kinect. When creating a new project in Silverlight, we should have the option to create a Unit Test. Most Silverlight developers are not unit testing. If this is surprising to you then you need to get out and talk to more developers. I partially blame this on Microsoft. When you create a new ASP.NET MVC application, you simply put a check to create a Unit Test project. We need the same thing for Silverlight. We should steer the developer into the right direction. Design patterns such as MVVM need to be easier to implement in Silverlight solutions.  I’d go so far as to say that MVVM Light should ship with Visual Studio. With the project / item templates and code snippets, Laurent puts you into the right direction. This is the way that it should have been. Easy for the 9-5 developer to grasp. I believe the majority of developers use code behind because that’s what is in all the demos provided by Microsoft. They are not trying to write sucky code it is that they simply don’t know a better way.  The XAP Files should be obfuscated/unused references deleted by default when in “Release” mode. A better Silverlight experience starts with a smaller XAP file. The less that a user has to download is the better, even with the majority of people on broadband. I would also recommend built-in obfuscation by Microsoft. People are paranoid that they can rename the .zip and run it through reflector. Get rid of the boring install experiences. Here is a great write up on what I’m talking about. The default “Install Silverlight” and “Loading screens” suck. They suck bad. We need a choice of templates that a professional designer has created.  Silverlight needs to supports more image formats. For example: it would be great to use .gif’s without converting them to .png.    Switching between Blend 4 and VS2010 to develop a Silverlight application is a pain. Probably one of the biggest issues that I can’t think of a good solution for. It would be nice if VS2012 had the best of both worlds and you never have to leave VS. We need reporting controls with SSRS included with the Silverlight Toolkit. I can’t think of another control that we need built into the toolkit. It would also be helpful to have export to .xls, .pdf and .doc included with the control. I hope that this post will at least get a few people talking.   • Hardware refresh of Solaris 10 systems? Try this!

    I've been seeing quite an uptick in the people that are wanting to install Solaris 11 when they are doing hardware refreshes.  I applaud that effort - Solaris 11 (and 11.1) have great improvements that advance the state of the art and make the best use of the latest hardware. Sometimes, however, you really don't want to disturb the OS or upgrade to the a later version of an application that is certified with Solaris 11.  That's a great use of Solaris 10 Zones.  If you are already using Solaris Cluster, or would like to have more protection as you put more eggs in an ever growing basket, check out solaris10 Brand Zone Clusters.

  • A better way to organize your Silverlight Code Snippets.

    I hate re-writing code. I also hate it when I find a great code snippet on the web and forget to bookmark it or it gets lost in my endless sea of bookmarks. So what do you do to get around this? This is the question that I was asking myself at the end of 2010. How can I get my Silverlight code organized? My requirements for a snippet manager were: Needs to be FREE. An easy way to view XAML/C# code behind together in one “view”. I wanted the ability to store the code snippets in cloud in case my HDD dies. Searchable Keywords to quickly find code snippets. I started looking for a snippet manager that would allow me to do just that and finally found Snippet Manager. Before going any further, I think that one of the most important things to note here is that this software supports 37 languages. It’s not just for Silverlight developers nor C# only guys. The software supports Java, SQL and even COBOL.   Below is a screenshot of the Snippet Manager that shows my Silverlight code snippet. You will notice that I have highlighted two sections. The top part is my XAML and the bottom is my C# code behind. I’ve included a sample below of my code snippets so that you can get an idea of how I organized it. Another thing that’s great about this software is that it supports plain text. I added some connection strings in the TEXT section below.  Once you have finished adding your code snippets, you can store them in the cloud. I created a FTP directory called “snippets” on my FTP Server and hit the upload button once I am finished adding my new codes snippets. This will allow me to use the code snippets on another computer with this application on my USB Key. See screenshots below: Enter your FTP credentials below: Hit the Uploads button on the Toolbar: Login in to your FTP Server and verify the following files are now on the FTP Server: Another great feature of the Snippet Manager is that you can also integrate this into VS2010 by clicking Tools –> External Tools: And setting up your External Screen to point to the Executable: You can now launch it by going to Tools –> Snippet Manager. If you want you could also a shortcut to launch the program with HotKeys. As you can see, this is a nice little program that includes everything needed to organize your code snippets very clean.   • ADF Real World Developers Guide Book Review

    I'm half way through my review of "Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide" by Jobinesh Purushothaman - unfortunately some work deadlines de-railed me from having completed my review by now but here goes.  First thing, Jobinesh works in the Oracle Product Management team with me, so is a colleague. That declaration aside, its clear that this is someone who has done the "real world" side of ADF development and that comes out in the book. In this book he addresses both the newbies and the experience developers alike.  He introduces the ADF building blocks like entity objects and view obejcts, but also goes into some of the nitty gritty details as well.  There is a pro and con to this approach; having only just learned about an entity or view object, you might then be blown away by some of the lower details of coding or lifecycle.  In that respect, you might consider this a book which you could read 3 or 4 times; maybe skipping some elements in the first read but on the next read you have a better grounding to learn the more advanced topics. One of the key issues he addresses is breaking down what happens behind the scenes.  At first, this may not seem important since you trust the framework to do everything for you - but having an understanding of what goes on is essential as you move through development.  For example, page 58 he explains the full lifecycle of what happens when you execute a query.  I think this is a great feature of his book. You see this elsewhere, for example he explains the full lifecycle of what goes on when a page is accessed : which files are involved,the JSF lifecycle etc. He also sprinkes the book with some best practices and advice which go beyond the standard features of ADF and really hits the mark in terms of "real world" advice. So in summary, this is a great ADF book, well written and covering a mass of information.  If you are brand new to ADF its still valid given it does start with the basics.  But you might want to read the book 2 or 3 times, skipping the advanced stuff on the first read.  For those who have some basics already then its going to be an awesome way to cement your knowledge and take it to the next levels.  And for the ADF experts, you are still going to pick up some great ADF nuggets.  Advice: every ADF developer should have one!

  • How do you manage all of the information you have learned and found? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

  • Using bind (named) as a public proxy server

    We have a Python DNS server that does a bunch of stuff to figure out values it should return for various DNS records. This works nicely, however as it is Python, the performance under high load won't be great. What I would like to do is have a "proxy" bind server sit in front of it to return results to the public internet. This will cache the results (typically 15 minutes, some records are a few seconds), so the load on the Python server will be greatly reduced as it will only see one look up per domain (only about 100 domains) every 15 minutes. The data in these domains changes a lot, so using a master won't work as it will constantly be changing. I have something setup that looked like it would work great (using a forwarder for the zone), and tested it with dig etc, all going great. However when we went to go live with it, things weren't working, and we figured out that named is not setting the "Authoritative" bit (fair enough, it is a forwarder). So my question is, can we tell bind to set the Authoritative bit for forwarded domains? I have looked at all the doco I can find, and can't find anything about doing things this way. Most of the doco about using it as a proxy if for a LAN to the internet. Ideally I would like to use bind as it is there and installed (CentOS 5 servers). But at a pinch we could look at a different name server to do the work if it just can't be done with bind. Thanks.

    I am brand new to URL rewriting. I am using an Apache rewriting module on IIS 7.5 (I think). Either way, I am able to do rewrites successfully, but am having trouble on a few key things. I want this pretty url to rewrite to the this ugly url: mydomain.com/bike/1234 (pretty) mydomain.com/index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID=1234 (ugly) This works great with this rule: RewriteRule ^bike/([0-9]+)$ /index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID$1 Issue #1 I want to be able to add a description and have it go to exactly the same place, so that the useful info is completely ignored by my application. mydomain.com/bike/1234/a-really-great-bike (pretty and useful) mydomain.com/index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID=1234 Issue #2 I need to be able to add a second or third parameter and value to the url to get extra info for the db, like this: mydomain.com/bike/1234/5678 mydomain.com/index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID=1234&FeatureID=5678 This works using this rule: RewriteRule ^bike/([0-9]+)/([0-9]+)$ /index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID=$1&FeatureID=$2 Again, I need to add some extra info, like in the first example: mydomain.com/bike/1234/5678/a-really-great-bike (pretty and useful) mydomain.com/index.cfm?Section=Bike&BikeID=1234&FeatureID=5678 So, how can I combine these rules so that I can have one or two or three parameters and any of the "useful words" are completely ignored?

    EDITED THE QUESTION as regarding type of solutions I am on Windows & some suggested SED etc. So i am OK with these 3rd party standalone exe's using command line Say i have following lines in abc.txt file "@yuy007 what are you doing friend #disneyrocks" "STFU, i dont care what you think @happy55" "@social88 @gg99 ok mate see you at the subway :)" "btw arnold was great in that movie @tt11 @gg11 #disneyrocks" "we are going to disney. Do you want to? #disneyrocks" "We dont like disney.#disneyrocks we are not going" ".@socialguy what are you upto #disneyrocks " I need to employ 5 filters with above file to get def.txt Delete all lines which start with @ character, like 1st and 3rd Delete all lines which start with .@ characters, like 7th Delete all lines which don't have any word starting with # like 2nd and 3rd In leftover lines, Delete all words starting with @ character (keeping the lines intact) like words @happy55 in 2nd , @social99 & @gg99 in 3rd, etc. In this case we still need to preserve quotes " at start and end of line Delete all the blank lines left after above lines are removed EDIT if i have following line , it wrongly deletes the content after @word's "btw arnold was great in that movie @tt101 @gb1997 #whatthehell" is edited to "btw arnold was great in that movie" Thanks

  • Data recovery; nearly 1 tb of movies on a WD 3.5 tb personal cloud drive disappears with scanty traces

    I have a great collection of movies that I had stored in a logical mesh of folder on my 3.5 tb WD personal cloud drive. I woke up 1 morning and found that everything was fine with my data on this drive, except for my movie collection: There were two great folders, one "2sort" nd the other "segregated". out of all the segregated sub folders, only letter C D and 2 or 3 others remain. and the 2 sort folder, which has umpteen subfolders, amounting to more than 0.5 tb. is.. it's just gone!! this is a great downfall.. now this is a personal cloud drive and has no usb port etc. unfortunately to hardwire and recover files.. now I'm sure there are softwares out there that can help me recover my beloved movies from such an interestingly "hard-to-reach" (should I say?) device? what may that software be compadre, my happiness lies within your answer.. thank you.. remember, recovery software or (WD) personal cloud. :) these ovies were All, "hand-picked", over the course of ten years.. I just never catalogued my collection.. if I could just get the "list" of my lost collection, that'd be enough.. recovering em would be a bonus.. but they out to be damaged if I were to somehow recover you know? still, I'm certain they're all intact.. I guess the file index just got corrupted.. There surely is a veil of some sort that need to be thrown or pushed aside to reveal my movies.. what software can do/does that? thanks immensely!
