  • Reduce boot time between grub menu and login screen

    I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version which used to boot fast at beginning but not i loads very slow. I searched for this but can't find suitable answers. so i want to reduce my boot time which is now around 1min 12sec (boot chart) overall but i noticed its taking a longtime after grub menu and before login screen. A Blank screen appears after grub waiting... then login screen appears. I want to know a way to reduce that blank screen time(or if possible remove) and get login screen as fast as possible. I already removed several of my startup applications. Getting desktop after log-in is fast. I don't want to remove unity and install light desktop envinorments like Xfce and Lxde.   • Animations / OpenGL (ES 2) in game menu

    (I am specifically asking for Android) If you look at Angry Birds (and in fact many other games), you can already see a lot of animations & effects going in the main menu and in other places even before starting to play. I assume they are done with OpenGL, more precisely a FrameLayout is used and inside it a GLSurfaceView is somewhere at the bottom of the hierarchy; above the GLSurfaceView you have regular Android buttons and texts. Is this how it's done*? Also would you reuse the same GLSurfaceView when running the actual game or should another one be created? *I am aware an alternative approach would be to make absolutely everything in OpenGL. Of these two I prefer the FrameLayout one, but I don't know whether other developers agree.

    For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Further information: sudo apt-get install ttf-ubuntu-font-family Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

  • Emacs24: emacsclient doesn't use global application menu

    I noticed that Emacs24 makes use of Unity's global application menu. (I'm using Damien Cassou's Emacs24 snapshots.) However, it doesn't do that when emacs, emacsclient or emacsclient.emacs24 are run but just with emacs24. How can I fix that? (Is that a bug? If so, should I file a report in Emacs' or libappmenu's bugtracker?) [EDIT]: As far as I can see this could be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/appmenu-gtk/+bug/673302 .

  • Ubuntu 12.10 Network Connection menu GUI doesnt work properly

    Many a times I have seen When I click on network connection(besides volume icon), I am unable to select any options. When I hover over VPN connections, the list shows nothing. I have added many VPNs. Network menu becomes non responsive to any clicks. This is annoying because I am not able to connect to any of the VPN connections. "Enable Wireless", "Edit Connections" or any other option doesnt work at all. Restarting ubuntu fixes this issue. But problem starts randomly again and restarting my laptop is the only way to fix it. Is this a known bug? Any ways to fix this prob?

  • Trying to boot from USB on Asus q200e-bhi3t45 just brings me to grub menu

    It's been a struggle every time I've tried to change my OS on this machine. I honestly don't even know how it works whenever it does. I've somehow managed to get Windows 7, Windows 8, Mint 14, Ubuntu 12.04, and 12.10 to work at random times but it's always after struggling with it and googling for random chance fixes and suddenly something clicks and it loads from usb, but 99% of the time, every time I try to boot from USB to install a distro (in this case, I'm trying to get ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso to work) my pc just comes up with a grub menu ("Minimal bash-like blahblahblah - grub ") I don't know why it works when it works. Right now I've tried everything from with/without Fast Boot in BIOS, with/without CSM, with/without secure boot, to changing BOOTx64.EFI to bootx64.efi to downloading a new bootx64.efi to copying it to every folder on the usb.... It makes no sense to me. Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't find anything

    I am using using ubuntu 11.10. Everything was working perfectly this morning. At a moment "Ubuntu software center" application was unable to get started. So I restarted by system and when I logged in it started under GNOME. Again when I try to start in ubuntu session then it was not showing in menu list but Ubuntu 2D is coming.   • Menu bar and launcher missing in new installation of ubuntu 13.04

    I have just installed ubuntu 13.04 on my ThinkPad laptop. I am missing the launcher and upper bar. I only found references to the same problem for upgrades, so I tried everything written here, here and here with no success. However, referring to the second link, I ran ccsm and found my Ubuntu Unity Plugin unchecked. Checking it required to also enable the OpenGL and so I did. But, apparently I am unable to enable the OpenGL. Trying to enable it manually...and the checkbox gets automatically unchecked after few seconds. Please help. Update: I have Intel graphics driver, maybe the problem is specifically with it?. I also tried running ccsm after logging using CTRL+ALT+F1 like given here. I was able to enable OpenGL and the Ubuntu Unity Plugin there, but still, no effect on my display, also after reboot.

    In some code I'm reviewing, I'm seeing stuff that's the moral equivalent of the following: public class Foo { private Bar bar; public MethodA() { bar = new Bar(); bar.A(); bar = null; } public MethodB() { bar = new Bar(); bar.B(); bar = null; } } The field bar here is logically a local variable, as its value is never intended to persist across method calls. However, since many of the methods in Foo need an object of type Bar, the original code author has just made a field of type Bar. This is obviously bad, right? Is there a name for this antipattern?

    Im trying to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. i created a partition in windows 7, booted the Ubuntu cd, installed Ubuntu and created a swap space(following all instructions detailed in various video tutorials). after restarting and taking out the disk my computer boots directly into windows. also, in the boot menu where you select what os to boot, Ubuntu doesn't show up, just windows 7. i didn't want to screw around with any settings and figured the community could figure out my problem faster than i could :p any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Ubuntu 12.10 shows no launcher or menu

    I have 'upgraded' to Ubuntu 12.10 from a previous nice version that always worked. I have installed from a CD downloaded from this site. I start the PC (HP Pavillion zv5200) and arrive at a signon screen which has my username and "Guest". This screen shows the menu at the top with power, time, calendar, etc. So I enter my password and I am taken to a screen which only shows a wallpaper, nothing else. If I move the mouse and 'push' against the left limit I do not get a launcher app. Nothing. The only thing that works is opening a terminal (ctrl+alt+F1). I have tried several of the hot-key combinations I've read about on the site but none do anything, nothing happens. Can anyone help? Thanks very much!

  • Binding WPF menu items to WPF Tab Control Items collection

    I have a WPF Menu and a Tab control. I would like the list of menu items to be generated from the collection of TabItems on my tab control. I am binding my tab control to a collection to generate the TabItems. I have a TabItem style that uses a ContentPresenter to display the TabItem text in a TextBlock. When I bind the tab items to my menu the menu items are blank. I assume the menu items are looking for the Header property of the TabItems which I am not using. Is there a workaround for my scenario? Is it possible to bind to the Header property of the tab item, when I do not know the number of tabs in advance? Below is a copy of my xaml declarations.   • Align col in a bootstrap collapsable menu

    I got my hands on bootstrap recently and I'm still discovering it. I made collapsable menu from a tutorial online but now that I want to had an image on each entry of my menu that I wasn't expecting. I want my image to be always aligned to the text in the menu but it still getting on top of it. I tried to remove row and col tag and forget about the responsiveness of my menu but it still doesn't work...   • Show menu when view is long pressed

    I've been looking around on the internet regarding my question but I couldn't find a straight answer. Is it possible to create a non-blocking menu similar to the overflow menu found in Android 4.0+ when a view is long pressed? I have a number of LinearLayout instances which have an OnLongClickListener which brings up a context menu, but it's not exactly what I am looking for. I was hoping for a smoother menu which is brought up when one of these instances is clicked, and removed when the user clicks outside of the menu's region. This is very similar to the way the overflow menu behaves in the Android ActionBar. So to sum up, is it possible to replicate the look-and-fell and the behavior of the overflow menu when using context menus? Here's hoping I don't have to jump through hoops to get the implementation that I desire. Thanks in advance. EDIT: After some digging I've found the PopupMenu which is exactly what I was looking for however it works only on devices running Honeycomb and above. Does anyone know of a way with which I can replicate this menu behavior in older versions of Android without using blocking windows like dialogs?

  • Snow Leopard doesn't repair permissions, despite showing / saying its fixed them?

    Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?     For web browsing I use Pale Moon. Pale Moon has a Status Bar, similar to what is now known as the Add-on Bar in Firefox. With Pale Moon when I hover over a link URL is shown in the status bar URL is shown instantly Entire width of status bar is allowed for URL, if necessary With Firefox when I hover over a link URL is shown in a tooltip in lower left corner URL is shown after intentional delay Only half the browser window width is allowed for URL Is there a way to make Firefox behave more like Pale Moon? No Status-4-Evar answers I realize Status-4-Evar might be the best solution here but I wish to see what, if any other options are out there. I will also accept well thought out and referenced answers as to why the Firefox way is "better".
