  I'm writing a scheduling program with a difficult programming problem. There are several events, each with multiple meeting times. I need to find an arrangement of meeting times such that each schedule contains any given event exactly once, using one of each event's multiple meeting times. Obviously I could use brute force, but that's rarely the best solution. I'm guessing this is a relatively basic computer science problem, which I'll learn about once I am able to start taking computer science classes. In the meantime, I'd prefer any links where I could read up on this, or even just a name I could Google.

• How should jruby-jars and jruby-rack be added to the classpath using warbler?

  Hi again, I've been reading through the warbler source code, and I can't figure out how the jruby-jars and jruby-rack jars are meant to end up on the servlet classpath? It seems warbler is copying them into web-inf/gems/gems/<gemname>/lib/<jarname>.jar but they are not on the classpath. I'm guessing that if I put them in my ruby apps lib/ folder they would be copied to web-inf/lib and all would be well, however, it seems odd to have 2 copies of the jar in the war file, is that what I am meant to do? • A device specific alpha bitmap fails after switching resolutions in remote desktop

  All my alpha bitmaps, created using CreateCompatibleBitmap(..), start to receive an error code 87 after someone signs in with Remote Desktop. I am assuming that this is because the resolution changed and I am using a device specific bitmap. I am wondering what the best route is to fix this issue without migrating to a device independent bitmap? Some options are: 1) Detect remote desktop change and flag all bitmaps to be reloaded (I have done this but it does not work as well as I would like). 2) Wait for error code 87 to happen on an alphablend image that previously worked, and then reload it (was going to try this next, im sure it will work, but a little hacky) 3) Detect random event such as WM_DISPLAYCHANGE or _ that tells me when I should do this (ie: a device change event I'm guessing, or maybe something more specific?) 4) _? • null object reference in ScrollPane/endDrag() when scrollDrag=true

  Hello there. In my flash application, I've got multiple windows which use Scrollpanes. The scrollDrag property is set to true on these because I want that functionality. If I close (within my application) one of these 'windows' and open another, I seem to get a whole lot of this error showing up in my logs: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at fl.containers::ScrollPane/endDrag() Sometimes I get thousands of these, which I'm guessing is probably slowing my app down a bit, but otherwise is not causing a problem. Looking through the adobe code for scrollpane, endDrag is really simple: protected function endDrag(event:MouseEvent):void { stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, doDrag); } The stage var is the only thing that could be null here. The only thing I can think to do is set scrollDrag=false before the window in my application closes so that nothing is listening for the event. Any other suggestions?

  Let's say I asked Microsoft to describe the perfect, modern, Microsoft-based technology stack to power a standard e-commerce web site, which perhaps has a simple 2-tier web/database architecture. What would it be like? Yes, I'm just looking for a list of product / technology names. For example, in the J2EE world, I might describe a stack that includes: J2EE 6 standard JavaServer Faces Glassfish 3 MySQL 5.1.x I'm guessing this stack includes some combination of .NET, SQL Server, ASP.NET, IIS, etc. but I am not familiar with this world. Looking for ideas on the equivalent in Microsoft-land.

• iPhone SDK Internet connection detection

  I'm working on an iPhone application that makes a few calls to web services. I posted this application on the Apple store but it got rejected (and rightly so) since there was no error message displayed to the user if no Internet connection is available. Since obviously the application would not work without it. So I just wanted to know how to best achieve this? I'm guessing something needs to go in the viewDidLoad method that will throw an alert box saying something like "You need an Internet connection to use this application". Any ideas would be appreciated.

  Hi all I'm using an ADO.NET Entity Model which I'm trying to query using LINQ. The problem I'm having is that I can't specify the where clause as I'd like. • VB.net Net after load event?

  I need some way of knowing when a form has finished loading. My reasoning is I have a 2nd form that is loaded when this form loads. The code for this is called from form1.load. Form2 is currently being displayed behind form1 as I am guessing form1 calls an activate or similar at the end of the load so any Activate, BringToFront etc calls on from2 are over ridden. If you look at the code below I have tried adding frmAllocationSearch.Activate, frmAllocationSearch.BringToFront and Me.SendToBack after the call to ShowAlloactionSearchDialog() but these are all wasted as something is happening after the load event is fired to bring Me to the front. • How to keep an old VB6 application running in Windows Vista and Windows 7?

  I have an old VB6 app which I'm still trying to support. A few users have reported weird crashes when running the app in Vista or Windows 7. The log files don't show anything after one of these crashes, but the customers report that the error message said "OLE something ...", if they saw anything at all. I've never been able to reproduce these crashes while running the program on my own Vista or Windows 7 boxes, so I have essentially no information on what the problem is. My suspicion is that it's a problem with their versions of one or more of the umpteen billion DLLs that a VB6 application is dependent on. The app also uses lame_enc.dll, which introduces a few more dependencies. I'm guessing this is a common problem with VB6 apps (although it's possible that I just sucked as a programmer 10 years ago). Is there some magical installer/updater out there that makes sure all the VB6 dependencies are what they need to be for a VB6 app to function properly?

• gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 iphone

  Hi, I've seen this error with different variations on discussion forums but being a non programmer I'm not sure how to progress this. Basically I have code which I found to help me with changing the background colors of cells on a grouped uitableview. The code introduced a line as such: CGContextAddArcToPoint(c, minx, miny, midx, miny, ROUND_SIZE); This gave an error indicated that it wasn't declared, so I added to my .h file the following under import uikit: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #define ROUND_SIZE 10 Now it shows that I have an error: Command/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 iphone Some discussions talk about libraries but because I don't have a programming background I don't understand what to do. I also see that some people show a log output but I'm not sure where that comes from as I don't get any debug windows because I'm guessing it doesn't get that far. I simply click 'Build and Go' and I get this error in the Message window. Any thoughts?

• Visual Studio - 'Browse UDDI Servers' -> 404 ?

  Hi - I have a ASP.Net application which implements a web service. Within the ASP.Net application there's a test script which consumes the web service and it all works etc. I have built a .NET console application and want to 'Add a Web Reference' so that the console app can consume the web service provided by the ASP.NET application. When I use the 'Browse UDDI Servers on the local network' to do that any plausible URL I use results in a 404. I'm guessing I need to do something to my ASP.Net application so that it acts as an UDDI server ? Does anyone know what ? Update I just wanted to clarify something - I'm not desperate to use UDDI it just seems that's the only option in my circumstances which are : I'm actually doing this for another developer who is used to using Visual Studio to do this stuff The other developers system will need to run on another machine within the same network.

• Android ScrollView jumps around when setting child visibility to View.GONE

  I have a ScrollView that contains an number of other views (TextViews, ImageViews, etc.). The ScrollView is taller than the screen. I have an AsyncTask that updates the children of the ScrollView based on an http response. I've discovered an interesting behavior that I can't figure out how to work around. If I set any of the children's visibilities to View.INVISIBLE as part of the AsyncTask.onPostExecute(), everything works fine. However, if I set any of the children's visibilities to View.GONE, the ScrollView jumps down from the top when onPostExecute() is called. Exactly how far seems to vary. I'm guessing that re-laying out the ScrollView is causing it to scroll away from the top for some reason. So the question is: is there a way to either prevent or work around this behavior? PS. Using ScrollView.jump(FOCUS_UP) as a workaround isn't ideal since that'll force the user to the top even if they had intended to scroll down.

• C# .net -> SQLite error: Unable to open the database file

  Hello all, I'm getting "System.Data.SQLite.SQLiteException: Unable to open the database file." when I attempt to access the database to save a record upon the "first" opening of my program. Here's the thing, it works fine when debugging locally in Visual Studio, but stops working when I package the program in an installer, and then install the program somewhere. I was guessing that it was the location of the database, which I just have set at database.s3db without a path, because it is stored next to the program's exe, but how could that cause problems? I'm at a loss, any further ideas or suggestions for solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

• Negative execution time

  Hello, I wrote a little program that solves 49151 sudoku's within an hour for an assignment, but we had to time it. I thought I'd just let it run and then check the execution time, but it says -1536.087 s. I'm guessing it has to do with the timer being some signed dataype or something, but I have no idea what datatype is used for the timer in the console (code::blocks console, I'm not sure if this is actually a separate console, or just a runner that runs the terminal from the local operating system), so I can't check what the real time was. I'd rather not run this again with some coded timer within my program, since I'd like to be able to use my pc again now. Anybody have any idea what this time could be? It should be somewhere between 40 and 50 minutes, so between 2400 and 3000 seconds. Regards, Erik

• Does it take time to deallocate memory?

  I have a C++ program which, during execution, will allocate about 3-8Gb of memory to store a hash table (I use tr1/unordered_map) and various other data structures. However, at the end of execution, there will be a long pause before returning to shell. For example, at the very end of my main function I have std::cout << "End of execution" << endl; But the execution of my program will go something like $ ./program do stuff... End of execution [long pause of maybe 2 min] $ -- returns to shell Is this expected behavior or am I doing something wrong? I'm guessing that the program is deallocating the memory at the end. But, commercial applications which use large amounts of memory (such as photoshop) do not exhibit this pause when you close the application. Please advise :)

(I'm guessing from my brief glance around the web that the answer is NO, but no harm asking)

I'm guessing it could be the web.xml file, but I'm not sure. (Note: I thought of checking the Showcase app provided with the GWT SDK, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to support serving static files on _escaped_fragment_ and it doesn't use the #! token..)

  Picture a terminal. There are two windows inside that terminal. One on top, one on bottom. The top one is much bigger. The top one receives asynchronous updates. The bottom one is for user input. It would work almost exactly the same as vim - the text editor. I'm writing this in Python. I'm guessing you would do this by using curses, but I'm not sure if it's possible.

• How come ftp protocol produces transmission errors sometimes if the data is using TCP, which is checksummed?

  Every once in a while, downloading (especially large) files through ftp will produce errors. I am guessing that's also partly the reason why all major sites are publishing external checksums along with their downloads. How is this possible if ftp goes through TCP, which has checksum inbuilt and resends data if it is transmitted corruptly? One could argue that this is due to the short length of the CRC in the TCP protocol (which is 16bit I think, or something like that), and the collisions are simply happening too often. but 1) for this to be true, not only must there be a CRC collision, but also the random network error must modify both the CRC in the packet, and the packet itself so that the CRC will be valid for the new packet... Even with 16 bitCRC, is that so likely? 2) There are seemingly not many errors in, say, browsing the web which also goes through TCPIP.

  Hi again guys. I'm trying to access my iPhone's device keychain. I want to access in order to create a simple user-password value intended for a log in function.   I'm trying to get a stored procedure to work using the following syntax: select count(sl.Item_Number) as NumOccurrences from spv3SalesDocument as sd left outer join spv3saleslineitem as sl on sd.Sales_Doc_Type = sl.Sales_Doc_Type and sd.Sales_Doc_Num = sl.Sales_Doc_Num where sd.Sales_Doc_Type='ORDER' and sd.Sales_Doc_Num='OREQP0000170' and sl.Item_Number = 'MCN-USF' group by sl.Item_Number having count (distinct sl.Item_Number) = 0 In this particular case when the criteria is not met the query returns no records and the 'count' is just blank. I need a 0 returned so that I can apply a condition instead of just nothing. I'm guessing it is a fairly simple fix but beyond my simple brain capacity. Any help is greatly appreciated. Wally

• Decoration View *above* cells in UICollectionView

  I've got a decoration view showing the way I want, in my UICollectionView. The position and size is right. The decoration view stays at the frame I'm setting for it in my layout. But, I want the decoration view to be above the cells, not below them. I tried setting the zIndex property on the UICollectionViewLayoutAttributes for the decoration view, but this has no effect - I tried logging out the zindex of the cells, and they're all returning 0, and my decoration view's zIndex is set to 20. I'm guessing having decoration views above the cells is not supported, at least in UICollectionViewFlowLayout? Someone please confirm this, thanks! In the meantime, I'm going back to having a custom UIView subclass as a subview in the parent controller of the collection view and laying out the frame of it in the - (void) viewWillLayoutSubviews() method.
