• Send raw data to USB parallel port after upgrading to 11.10 oneiric

  I have a laser cutter connected via a generic USB to parallel adapter. The laser cutter speaks HPGL, as it happens, but since this is a laser cutter and not a plotter, I usually want to generate the HPGL myself, since I care about the ordering, speed, and direction of cuts and so on. In previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to print to the cutter by copying an HPGL file directly to the corresponding USB "lp" device. For example: cp foo.plt /dev/usblp1 Well, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric, and I can't find any "lp" devices in /dev anymore. D'oh! What's the preferred way to send raw data to a parallel port in Ubuntu? I've tried System Settings Printing + Add, hoping that I might be able to associate my device with some kind of "raw printer" driver and print to it with a command like lp -d LaserCutter foo.plt But my USB to parallel adapter doesn't seem to show up in the list. What I do see are my HP Color LaserJet, two USB-to-serial adapters, "Enter URI", and "Network Printer". Meanwhile, over in /dev, I do see /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 devices for the 2 USB-to-serial adapters. I don't see anything obvious corresponding to the HP printer (which was /dev/usblp0 prior to the upgrade), except for generic USB stuff. For example, sudo find /dev | grep lp produces no output. I do seem to be able to print to the HP printer just fine, though. The printer setup GUI gives it a device URI starting with "hp:" which isn't much help for the parallel adapter. The CUPS administrator's guide makes it sound like I might need to feed it a device URI of the form parallel:/dev/SOMETHING, but of course if I had a /dev/SOMETHING I'd probably just go on writing to it directly. • libssh2 port forward

  In extension of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1580750/example-code-of-libssh2-being-used-for-port-forwarding I was wondering if there's an "easier" way to connect to the locally binded addr:port. From the link: you bind a remote port and list it locally, you accept incoming data from the port and send it to another socket (namely the local addr:port), after which I'd like to connect to the local addr:port. Is there a way to skip the "send it to another" step and direct the data directly for my "connect to localhost" ? There are two parts to why I want this, first, it seems excessive, and in the spirit of piping, I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible. Second, since I'm trying to connect to a localhost'ed bound port forward, all code is in the same thread, making a continiously getting data-sending data, and polling the sending data from another socket, a bit tricky. • Is there such a thing as a virtual COM port receipt printer?

  I'm debugging some code that writes directly to a COM port in order to print receipts on a receipt printer. The printer model is something like an Epsom TM-88. Instead of printing reams of thermal paper while debugging this code, it would be nice if I could use some kind of virtual printer. Like PDFCreator or FinePrint, but with a virtual COM port instead of a virtual windows printer. Does anyone know of such a thing? Edit: The code sends control characters to get bold text and other formatting. I'd like to see this in the output if possible.

• Using open2300 with Ubuntu

  Hello, I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and have been trying to use Open2300 to read data from a Lacrosse WS-2310 weather station and report it to the WUnderground server. The program compiles fine but when I try to run it, it does one of two things: usually it pauses for about 4 minutes, then prints "could not reset" to the screen. But sometimes it just hangs forever. It seems like my computer is unable to communicate with the weather station. I have set the serial port as /dev/ttyS0 in the open2300.conf file and i have also tried /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc with the same result. As far as I can tell, there are no other settings regarding how Open2300 communicates with the device. Is my serial port locked somehow? It could be something as simple as an incorrect configuration for my serial port or something, but I would have no idea how to check that or change the configuration. • Port 80 is being used by SYSTEM (PID 4), what is that?

  I am trying to use port 80 for my application server, but when I perform "netstat -aon" I get TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 When I look up the process in task manager, it shows PID 4 is SYSTEM, thats it, not extension... nothing, just "SYSTEM". Whats going on here? I'm afraid to end this process, what do I do? UPDATE: I've solved this through a stackoverflow question.   I'm trying to implement a simple FTP server (a variation of the EFTP protocol) in linux. When a client connects and sends the PASV command, the server should respond with a port number, so the client can connect to that port to transmit the file. How can the server choose a port number? Do I need to iterate through all the ports from 1024 to 65535 until I find a port that the process can bind to? I know that calling bind() with 0 as the port automatically chooses the port to bind to, but then how can I know which port was chosen? Many thanks.

  Our clients must pay a monthly Fee... if they don't, what is the best way to block the asp.net software usage? Note: The application runs on the client own server, its not a SaaS app... My ideas are: Idea: Host a Web Service on the internet that the application will use to know if the client can use the software. Issue 1 - What happen if the client internet fails? Or the data center fails? Possible Answer: Make each web service access to send a key that is valid for 7 or 15 days, so each web service consult will enable the software to run more 7 or 15 days, this way the application will only be locked after 7 or 15 days without consulting our web servicee. Issue 2 - And if the client don't have or don't want to enable internet access to the application? Idea 2: Send a key monthly to the client. Issue - How to make a offline key? Possible Answer: Generate a Hash using the "limit" date, so each login try on software will compare the today hash with the key? Issue 2 - Where to store the key? Possible Answer: Database (not good, too easy to change), text file, registry, code file, assembly... Any opinion will be very appreciated!

• NTPD: use an unrestricted port for communication

  When querying ntp servers with the command ntpdate, I can use the -u argument to make the source port an unrestricted port (port 1024 and above). With ntpd, which is meant to run in the background, I can't seem to find a way to turn this option on. So the source port is always 123. It's playing around horribly with my firewall configuration. Is there a configuration option in ntp.conf to make it use a random source port?

  I would like to block some websites on their HTTPS version and allow them on HTTP. The main websites involved are Youtube and Google Images/Videos. This is because on the HTTP version, I can enforce the Safesearch filter on those platforms, whereas I cannot on the HTTPS version. For me, this is a very serious issue which spoils many great things about the Safesearch features Google offers. Is there any software/config that can do that?   This seems to be discussed in many places. But I don't get it or it does not work for me. So let me explain. I use Firefox 24.0 on Lubuntu 12.04. In privacy settings, I have selected 1. Use custom settings for history 2. accept cookies from sites 3. never accept third party cookies. But then when I check (e.g. in show cookies in firefox preferences or in lightbeam), it still shows me many third party cookies (e.g. google.com, facebook, etc.). What additional steps I have to take to block them?

• Need to configure 4 Serial ports virtualbox guest win machine (my host is ubuntu 11.10)

  I have an application that run's on winNT and requires the APCI-7500 card (a 4-multiport serial card), so I've installed the winNT thru virtualbox, but as i try to configure the serial ports I notice that virtualbox shows only 2 serial ports, only 2 tabs in the ports configuration section.How can I add the other 2 ports and configure them. • Run application in specific X server or VNC port

  I have an application that I'd like to run, yet I'd like it to be visible only through a certain VNC port. I don't want the app to show up on the normal Ubuntu desktop. I want the app to run "in the background", and be viewable through VNC only. And when connected to this "alternate X server", the end-user wouldn't see any menu bars, no window decorations.. Just the app. Come to think of it, what I'm asking for is a sort of kiosk-mode for only a certain app, accessible through VNC. Is this possible or am I really reaching here? Thanks! Note that the app I wish to run in this fashion is written in Java. It is a JNLP file.

• How does one block unsupported web browsers?

  Web browsers with an end of life no longer receive security updates which not only makes them vulnerable to the end user, but I imagine its not safe for the server's which receive visits by them either. Is it practical to block or enforce and notify the end user that their browser is unsafe and unsupported? If so, how would one achieve that? I don't know of any official or crowd-sourced listing with that information to parse and keep up to date. I'm aware that the practice can be custom built with User Agent parsing and feature detection for HTML5 enabled browsers.

• Over-Current condition on port 7 or 8

  I am having a problem with my USB ports. It shows over-current conditions on ports 7 and 8. I have heard that this is caused by a damaged USB port, and since it is detecting it on two ports it seems that I have two that are broken. I do indeed have two that do not work, so that is not the issue. What I would like to do is disable whatever program is running over-current condition checks. tty's are unusable at this point. Every few second a new over-current condition occurs. Fixing them is not important or an option.
