• A program/CLI command to help translate multiple file names

  I have hundreds of files with different names that I want to translate into a different language. Is there an application/CLI action that would allow me to copy all this names as in a list/table and then, after having translated them, to paste them back into the list/table, or that would allow a procedure somewhat similar to "Rename" in Thunar but with a more complex action closer to what I have described? (I am in Lubuntu and I prefer not to use Nautilus due to unwanted interference with LXDE/pcmanfm desktop and LXPanel. If there is a solution in Nautilus please provide it but try to give an alternative if possible.)

• IIS crashes with unhandled exception in ASP.NET

  We had an issue recently with an unhandled exception in an ASP.NET C# application bringing down IIS and all application pools that it was hosting. IIS Manager was unable to restart or stop/start the service and I was unable start IIS again after killing w3wp.exe in the task manager. A system reboot restored IIS to a running state; as a primarily Linux admin, I generally consider an unplanned system reboot to resolve a software error to be an act of high heresy. Is there a way to "harden" IIS so that a faulting application does not affect anything but the request that exposes the fault? Some details on the server and application fault. IIS: 7.5 .NET: 4.0 Windows Server 2008 R2 Faulted on call to System.Net.Dns.Resolve() with a url pointing to a non-existant domain as the argument. (I'm aware that this method is deprecated but the point that a page code issue shouldn't bring down the server still stands) The exception generated was SocketException. The faulting module according to event viewer was KERNELBASE.dll The issue was resolved by wrapping the call in a try-catch, logging the exception and displaying some generic content on the page. I'm hoping that I missed something in the IIS config that would switch it to "production" mode or something.

• Pros and Cons between learning to program on Windows and Linux and Macs

  I have been studying IT for 2 years and I'm going to graduate soon in this year (if everything goes well). I think it's time for me to choose a path to specialized into some fields of this large industry. Personally, I want to be a game programmer. But to be a game programmer, surely I have to invest my time to study Windows Programming, then DirectX and other programming techniques related to game. On the other hand, Linux seems promising as well. I am not sure about Game Programming on for it, but it seems become an expert for this OS, and by expert it's not about using the OS to become an administrator, but can do further than that, such as understand the OS to its essence and can produce applications for it. However, there's some obstacles in my view for this development path. Many of my friends think that Linux is based on free and open source, and if you follow it, as its name suggested: Free and Open Source, it means we also give away our software free. Otherwise, we will have to find a second job to make living. Currently, I think a viable way to make money on Linux is doing works related to client-server. Another way to developer my career is to become expert in developing business applications for companies. This is more on business, not on specialized IT fields so I am not really interested. Another alternative is programming on mobile devices, such as iPhone, Android and it seems very promising and easier to approach. Another way is to become a computer scientist and research on academic subjects such as AI, human-computer interaction, but this is far beyond my reach, so I won't invest my time on it until I feel I am experienced enough. That's all I can think of for now. I may miss a lot of things, so I need more opinions as input to get the big picture of the industry for my career path.

• How to debug a server that crashes once in a few days?

  One of my servers crashes once in a few days. It does low traffic static web serving + low trafic dynamic web serving (PHP, local MYSQL with small data, APC, MEMCACHE) + some background jobs like XML file processing. The only clue I have is that a few hours before the server dies it starts swapping (see screenshot http://awesomescreenshot.com/075xmd24 ) The server has a lot of free memory. Server details: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric i386 scalarizr (0.7.185) python 2.7.2, chef 0.10.8, mysql 5.1.58, apache 2.2.20, php 5.3.6, memcached 1.4.7 Amazon EC2 (us-west-1) How can I detect the reason for the server crashes ? When it crashes its no longer accessible from the outside world.

• Firefox 16 freezes or crashes when playing Youtube or flash videos

  Using the most up to date Firefox (16.0.2), and Adobe Flash. Whenever I go to any youtube video or flash video on another page, Firefox starts the video, but only plays the audio, and then when I make any click on anywhere within Firefox, it gets completely stuck. It freezes and the only way to get it to close is to go to task manager. I restarted in Safe Mode and it did the same thing. Windows 7 64 bit.

• Windows 2008 VPS always crashes when out of disk space

  Hello, I am renting a Windows server 2008 dc SP2 VPS for hosting my Asp.Net projects. Now for the second time this month my VPS ran out of disk space. The first time it was a log file that got to big and yesterday it was my mistake for uploading a website without noticing the lack of space on my VPS. Now the side effect this has is that my VPS corrupts some files when trying to write them. Last time it was Plesk that stopped working yesterday it was IIS. So I was wondering is this normal behavior? I called my service provider to ask if they could restore a back-up and to ask if this is normal and they ensured me it was. I am not trying to blame them and I know it's mostly my fault for not monitoring my VPS better or for not setting better defaults.

• ssh crashes connecting using host names on windows

  On a new install of Windows Server 2008, I attempting to use ssh to connect to another host. I have installed putty/openssh. This works without a problem when trying a command such as: ssh 192.168.0.2 However, this will crash when trying something like: ssh testserver with the error as follows in the windows event viewer: Faulting application ssh.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x40843497, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a76d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0004bbb8, process id 0xe94, application start time 0x01cb873195e795d5. • Do these 3 crashes have something in common?

  I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini. I tried to install 3 applications today and all 3 installations failed. I am wondering if the failures have something in common. First I installed GraphViz. The installation succeeded, but when I try to open any .dot file, I get a dialog that says GraphViz has quit unexpectedly. Next I installed Doxygen. It installed, but when I try to launch it I get a dialog that tells me Doxywizard quit unexpectedly. After some googling I thought perhaps my system lacked QT, and that was the problem. I downloaded the Qt 4.8.4 packages and installed them. But when I try to launch qtdemo.app, or any of the other apps that came with the qt installation, I get a dialog that says I can't open the app because it's not supported on this type of Mac. I have crash logs from GraphViz and Doxygen. They're long and I think it unnecessary to post them unless they would help someone determine my problem. • Random Computer Crashes

  Ok, here's a wierd one for you all. Occasionally my PC here at work will crash in a very peculiar way. My dual monitors will suddenly go blank as if there is no longer a video signal, the USB mouse light will go dark and mouse stays unresponsive, the keyboard lights will not change status when the appropriate keys are pressed (Num/Caps/Scoll Lock). The CD Tray WILL open and close. But the computer will not respond to a ping request. For all intents & purposes it's as if the computer is off, except it wasn't intentional by me. The power light and internal fans are still on and I've now lost any unsaved work. Now here's where it gets wierd. This PC is part of a batch of PC's we got from a local vendor who does our initial system builds. Mine, and 6 other co-workers PCs all have the same issue. Originally we thought it was a bad combination of hardware, but through trial and error the only thing we haven't eliminated are the OS, Mobo & CPU. The problem was so bad for some of them that they ended up going back to their 5 year old dinosaurs in order to get some work done, for me the problem isn't as bad, maybe once every other day or so, but still enough to bite me in the ass if I've forgotten my ritualistic pressing of CTRL-S every 1-5 minutes. In this case we've tried two different video cards, two different power supplies, two different memory configurations, running on a UPS/not on UPS, updating/rolling back video drivers, three different bios revisions. The only things we haven't swapped are the mobo & cpu, mainly because a new mobo means a new Hardware Abstraction Layer, ie re-install of windows and there's alot of other software on this PC that takes forever to reload by hand. There was a base image that our systems team created with all the drivers installed and the basic setup of software our company uses, but they then must customize the setup for us programmers so it takes a while to get a new configuration up and going. I'm a programmer by day and am usually pretty good at diagnosing computer problems whether through trial and error or not. We've pretty much exhausted all the ideas we can think of here, short of a new mobo/cpu. Was hoping someone out there might have anything else we can try.. Relevant Parts: OS: XP Pro 32-bit Motherboard: Intel DG41RQ CPU: Intel Core-2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz Current BIOS Version/Date Intel Corp. • Snow Leopard crashes my Xerox printer

  Just set up 2 brand new iMac 21.5" with OS X 10.6.2 pre-installed in our office. Now whenever we try to print an e-mail out, it re-sets the printer i.e. it switches off, does a POST and prints out a Printer Config page. I can print web pages and from other apps fine, just Apple Mail seems to be suffering. Printer is a Xerox Phaser 7750. I downloaded the drivers it recommended when i first tried printing which didn't help and then also tried downloading from the Xerox site. The latter seemed to install fine but then right at the end, it would say 'Installation Successful', then ask me to choose a printer (it found it fine, both by Bonjour and Raw TCP - i tried both) and then it would give an error message. Any help appreciated.

• Changing the default program for an application

  I have installed MonoDevelop and after that Wine, but when I want to open an EXE file and then double click on it, it always runs with the Mono runtime, and if I want to run it with Wine, I should right click on it and choose Wine. Well, in properties and in Open With there isn't Wine that choose it for the default application... I have this problem for all types of applications and files. When the software you want to run is in the right click application (Open With), I can't choose it in properties for the default. In fact, I can't find it in properties, because it is in open with option in right click... What should I do to fix this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), 32 bit.

• Varnish does not start properly (crashes after startup) with no error messages

  I am running Varnish (2.0.4 from the Ubuntu unstable apt repository, though I have also used the standard repository) in a test environment (Virtual Machines) on Ubuntu 9.10, soon to be 10.04. When I have a working configuration and the server starts successfully it seems like everything is fine, however if, for whatever reason, I stop and then restart the varnish daemon it doesn't always startup properly, and there are no errors going into syslog or messages to indicate what might be wrong. If I run varnish in debug mode (-d) and issue start when prompted then 7 times out of time it will run, but occasionally it will just shut down 'silently'. • Windows 7: Moving Program Files location during install using unattend.xml

  I am planning on using an unattend.xml to create a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit setup with Users and ProgramData on a 2nd drive. I have found many samples of how to do this (see below). However I would also like to move Program Files to a 3rd drive as well. i.e.: C:\Windows [SSD] D:\Users [HDD1] D:\ProgramData [HDD1] P:\Program Files [HDD2] P:\Program Files (x86) [HDD2] I have found that this was possible using unattend.txt in XP but all documentation or examples I find about Win 7 only mention Users and ProgramData, not Program Files. Is this possible using an answer file? • Help me learn to program with humility?

Through out my life, I've had milestones where I've sat down and really self evaluate myself. Every-time I've found something negative I've strived to put it right. One of those negatives is pride or arrogance. Sadly the nature of programming has plenty of fuel to endlessly fills ones own ego. Please can you give me words of wisdom that can serve as a reminder for me to "eat humble pie" I want to keep my arrogance in check even if that arrogance is a sand grains weight.

• Running a startup program in terminal as sudo

  I need to run a python script in a terminal, myscript.py at startup (on Lubunt). This script requires root. I've setup a .desktop file that runs the following command: lxterminal --command="python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" The terminal window opens at startup and runs the script, but then closes when the Python script returns an error (because it's not being run as root). When I change the Exec= to this... lxterminal --command="sudo python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" ... (prefixing command with 'sudo') which works. However, the terminal opens on startup and displays the [sudo] password for d: \ prompt, requiring me to input my password. I would like the execution of the python script at startup to be completely automatic with no user interaction. How can I accomplish this?

• Mountain Lion screen crashes after returning from sleep

  During the past 3 days I have experienced the following issue: when returning from sleep, I see an extremely garbled version of my desktop. The only thing that seems to help is a reboot. My first guess is that this is related to the video card. After looking into this issue, I found a lot of problems related to ML and returning from sleep, such as this post on AskDifferent, but I think this is a different issue because it does not speak of a garbled screen. Some more details: System: MacBook Pro 15" early 2011, 2,2GHZ I7, 8GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD6750M 1024 The issue seems to happen only when I open my laptop in the morning; if I close and open my laptop during the day, it does not seem to happen. The issue 'solves' when rebooting. • Prevent Windows 7 from installing a "critical" updates that crashes the system

  I am running Windows 7 home premium. Up until yesterday, everything was going just beautifully, until I received a "critical update". As soon as the critical update was installed, the system became extremely unstable and froze up every few minutes requiring me to restart the system several times, with the same results. I used system restore to roll back the * update, and everything went back to normal... except that I keep getting a message telling me to restart the computer so that it can install this "critical update". There is no "don't install that crap on my machine" option. Disabling the updates doesn't change anything, turning off the windows update service doesn't change anything either, and being on Home premium, I have no access to the group policies. Any ideas of what can be done to prevent Windows from installing this update the next time I reboot?

  I'm developing a commercial application that largely depends on the functionality of a library that will be developed with it. I'd like to open-source this library, because it offers functionality that is not found elsewhere and can be useful in other applications. However, I will also use it in my own commercial application. I don't want to publish the source of the main application, but it is definitely not a derived work (think of calculator app using GPL licensed library to calculate sine). And if someone else commercially uses the library, I want to require them to publish any changes made. Is the GPL license suitable for this or is LGPL perhaps what I need?

• Installing Ubuntu guest crashes Hyper-V host

  I have a weird problem that I don't even know where to begin diagnosing. Trying to install Ubuntu to a VM locks up the host system! My setup is: Dell R715 server, dual 16 core AMD opteron processors, 96GB RAM Dell MD3600f SAN Server 2008 R2 Datacenter System Center VMM 2012 There are 5 windows virtual machines running that have had no problems. This is the first linux VM I've tried to create. I setup a VM through virtual machine manager, set the CD drive to a Ubuntu 12.04 server x64 iso, and started it up. It boots up the normal ubuntu install menu, but the second I hit enter on "Install Ubuntu Server", I get disconnected. The HOST machine stops responding to pings. So do all virtual machines on it. It locks up entirely - keyboard on the host won't work, mouse won't move, numlock light won't change. There's no blue screen - the host is sitting at the login screen completely unresponsive. I can't find any relevant logs in event viewer after rebooting. What could cause the host machine to freeze like that? It's not a one time occurrence - it happens every time at the exact same point. Thank god this server isn't in production yet!

  I purchased and downloaded Celtx and I'm having trouble installing it (in Ubuntu 13.04). I'm a Linux newbie (literally had it for four days) so please be kind and don't assume much experience with the command line, I'm still learning. The folder with all related files/packages etc. is under "Downloads" and I have tried several commands to try and install but I'm just not doing it right and would appreciate help with exactly what command(s) to use. Sudo apt-get install celtx did not work. I'm assuming I'm missing a step somewhere.

All that were given on the condition that you should write your best code every day. You should come with new ideas and try and try again and again.. Will you accept that? Now come back to me please, the question is: what do you do to encourage youself to like programming and to write more of best practices and to come with new ideas? For example, if you were writing code and you get bored, in this case what do you do? Another example is, what do you do when some days are passed and you did not write anything? How do you recover and get back to work with high energy?
