• Add the 2D Version of the New Unity Interface to Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04

  Is your computer or virtualization software unable to display the new 3D version of the Unity Interface in Ubuntu? Now you can access and enjoy the 2D version with just a little PPA magic added to your system! To add the new PPA open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and click on the PPA listing for Unity 2D on the left (highlighted with red in the image). Scroll down until you find the listing for “Unity interface for non-accelerated graphics cards – unity-2d” and click Install. Once that is done you are ready to go to System, Administration, and then select Login Screen in your Ubuntu Menu. Unlock the screen and select Unity 2D as the default session from the drop-down list as shown here. Log out and then back in to start enjoying that Unity 2D goodness! • Add unallocated space to lvm

  I shrunk my windows partition and now have 10 GB of unallocated space that I now want to use to grow my / partition which is an ext4 in an lvm. I'm running Fedora 12. I ran system-config-lvm but the "Initialize Entry" button is greyed out. The unallocated space is not adjacent to the lvm but I cannot move the partitions in GParted like I was able to with ext3 in the past. I cannot create a new partition either as it says it cannot have more than 4 primary partitions. I don't see any option to create an extended partition. So my question is, how do I add that unallocated space to the lvm so I can grow the size of the / partition? I don't want to reinstall Fedora.

• iOS Game Center - Quit turn-based games for previous version of app

  I have a game on the iOS App Store that uses Game Center for turn-based multiplayer (GKTurnBasedMatch). I recently updated the app with a new game mode and I had to change the network protocol for that to happen. As a result I marked my new version as incompatible with the old one. That is, you cannot see the old games within the new app and you cannot initiate a game with someone with the old version of the app. This works as expected. However: The old games remain active after updating. There seems to be no way to quit them. What is worse is that they still count to the maximum number of games you can start. I have been contacted by players that can only start 1-3 games without hitting the roof. Have anyone experienced this before? Is there any way to quit the games? Thanks in advance

  I'm in the preparation stage to roll out a few Windows 2008 R2 Server Core in my VMware ESX environment. In looking over the documentation it looks like Server Core can operate in a little as 6.5 GB of hard drive space. Less disk space required. A Server Core installation requires only about 3.5 gigabytes (GB) of disk space to install and approximately 3 GB for operations after the installation. I am curious as to anyone’s real world experience and recommendations with regard to this requirement. Is it realistic? A little bit about our environment: Less than 25 users, and around 75 computers/servers in our current AD system. These systems will be responsible for normal AD operations and print servers for 5 printers - nothing to big here.

• EC2 out of space on root disk, moving it to ephemeral

  I am spawning a few test servers on ec2 that happen to be m1.larges. I am using these test servers for load balancin testing. Anyways, most of the servers I have used before have been backed by EBS, but these instances (ubuntu 11.04) obviously come with a lot of ephemeral space located @ /mnt. What I noticed that is happening is I am running on space on the root disk. I am trying out this tutorial http://www.turnkeylinux.org/docs/using-instance-storage moving my /home + /usr directories to /mnt and then remounting them. This works except it does not survive a reboot. Am I missing something here or is this tutorial not completely correct. How do I make space on my / drive so I can do stuff and survive re-boots.

• APT wedged by kernel version mismatch

  Apt is seemingly unable to do anything useful for me, repeatedly giving messages of this form: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-server: linux-server depends on linux-image-server (= 3.2.0.37.44); however: Version of linux-image-server on system is 3.2.0.37.45. linux-server depends on linux-headers-server (= 3.2.0.37.44); however: Version of linux-headers-server on system is 3.2.0.37.45. dpkg: error processing linux-server (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured This is basically the same problem as I cannot install any package (linux-image-server, linux-server dependencies errors) which got closed Duplicate to an answer that is totally useless for this situation. None of the advice in that very generic answer about dependencies helps. Explicitly: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get update all have no not effect. While sudo apt-get -f install sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade sudo apt-get -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes dist-upgrade all give some form of the error message above.

  The other day I blogged that the version of the SQL Server PowerShell provider (sqlps) follows the version of PowerShell. That’s all goodness, but it has appeared to cause an issue for PowerShell 2.0. the Get-Command PowerShell command-let returns an error (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) if you are using PowerShell 2.0 and sqlps – it’s a known bug, and I’m happy to report that it is fixed in SP2 for SQL Server 2008 – something that will released soon.   I am just trying to create a movementcontroller class for game entities. These class should transform the entity affected by the mouse and keyboard input. I am able to calculate the changed rotation and the new globalPosition. Then I multiply: newGlobalMatrix = changedRotationMatrix * oldGlobalMatrix; newGlobalMatrix = MatrixSetPosition(newPosition); The problem is that the object rotates around the global axis and not around the local axis. I use XNAMath for the matrix calculation.

• How to set default Java version?

  I have followed all the instructions stated at this question, but am encountering some problems with the last part of it. I actually have version 6.22 of java and would like to update to version 6.30. So after moving the extracted directory java-6-oracle into /usr/lib/jvm I do not know what to do, since the script that is pointed out in the answer above updates from java 5 to java 6. • Eculidean space and vector magnitude

  Below we have distances from the origin calculated in two different ways, giving the Euclidean distance, the Manhattan distance and the Chebyshev distance. Euclidean distance is what we use to calculate the magnitude of vectors in 2D/3D games, and that makes sense to me: Let's say we have a vector that gives us the range a spaceship with limited fuel can travel. If we calculated this with Manhattan metric, our ship could travel a distance of X if it were travelling horizontally or vertically, however the second it attempted to travel diagonally it could only tavel X/2! So like I say, Euclidean distance does make sense. However, I still don't quite get how we calculate 'real' distances from the vector's magnitude. Here are two points, purple at (2,2) and green at (3,3). We can take two points away from each other to derive a vector. Let's create a vector to describe the magnitude and direction of purple from green: |d| = purple - green |d| = (purple.x, purple.y) - (green.x, green.y) |d| = (2, 2) - (3, 3) |d| = <-1,-1> Let's derive the magnitude of the vector via Pythagoras to get a Euclidean measurement: euc_magnitude = sqrt((x*x)+(y*y)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((-1*-1)+(-1*-1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((1)+(1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt(2) euc_magnitude = 1.41 Now, if the answer had been 1, that would make sense to me, because 1 unit (in the direction described by the vector) from the green is bang on the purple. But it's not. It's 1.41. 1.41 units is the direction described, to me at least, makes us overshoot the purple by almost half a unit: So what do we do to the magnitude to allow us to calculate real distances on our point graph? Worth noting I'm a beginner just working my way through theory. Haven't programmed a game in my life!

• Tool to search for packages whose installed version does not match any version from a repository?

  I just upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and as expected, all my PPAs were disabled. I have re-enabled most of the ones that I want, but I would like to get a list of all packages that I installed from PPAs that I no longer have enabled. I feel that the best way to do this would be to search for all packages where the currently installed version of that package does not match any version from a currently-enabled repository. Is there an easy way to search for such packages. Command-line solutions welcome.

This is a pretty capable setup and definetly did have FF work previously, Note: I've downloaded and installed the ATI drivers from AMD. Not sure how to get WebGL working. I am using a postgresql database and when I try to run rake db:migrate it gives me some error like this: PG::UndefinedObject: ERROR: type "json" does not exist LINE 1: ALTER TABLE "filters" ADD COLUMN "search_string" json I installed pg version :- 9.3.1 but my friend is working on 9.2.4 I don't know why this error is occurring, I tried several times to downgrade using purge or remove commands to remove 9.3.1 all goes well but when I check psql --version it again shows me 9.3.1 . Any solution ???

  I have the exactly same problem as here: Windows XP TCP/IP No buffer space available On Windows XP Pro, SP3 if one does an experiment where one tries to open TCP/IP sockets in a loop (bascially, listen port 7000, listen port 7001, etc.) After approx 649 open sockets, one will start getting errors: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?) I've tried to edit the registry as described here http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-tcpip-max-limit.html I set MaxUserPort = 65534 and MaxFreeTcbs = 2000, but it didn't help. What else can I do? I need 1000 server sockets. In this all new version the support from Oracle has enabled a transformation of the editor underpinning Java framework and results in 3x performance improvement and 50% better memory utilization. So why is this a foundation version? Basically the new drag and drop designer tool allows you to tailor your own dictionary collection of components and then simply select and position those into your resulting exchange structure. This is true global reuse enabled from a canonical domain dictionary collection. So instead of grappling with XSD Schema syntax, or UML model nuances – this is straightforward direct WYSIWYG visual engineering – using familiar sets of business components. Then the toolkit writes the complex XSD Schema for you, along with test samples, documentation, XMI/UML models, Mindmaps and more. So how do you get a set of business components? The toolkit allows you to harvest these from existing schema collections or enterprise data models, or as in the case of NIEM, existing domain dictionary collections. I’ve been using this for the latest IEEE/OASIS/NIST initiative on a Common Data Format (CDF) for elections management systems. So you can download those from OASIS and see how this can transform how you build actual business exchanges – improving the quality, consistency and usability – and dramatically allowing automated generation of artifacts you only dreamed of before – such as a model of your entire major exchange collection components. http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/documents.php?wg_abbrev=election So what we have here is a foundation version – setting the scene and the basis for changing how people can generate and manage information exchanges. We still have a raft of work to do to integrate this into SOA best practices and extend the dictionary capabilities to assist true community development. Answering questions such as: - How good is my canonical component collection? - How much reuse is really occurring? - What inconsistencies and extensions are there in the dictionary components? Expect us to begin tackling these areas now that the foundation is in place. • Multiple version of Grub?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-29-generic-pae i686) which according to the Ubuntu documentation contains Grub2. However grub --version gives me grub (GNU GRUB 0.97), but grub-mkconfig --version gives me grub-mkconfig (GRUB) 1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Do I have 2 versions of Grub installed simultaneously? If so, what is the easiest and safest way to remove one. If not, which configuration file should I edit? I have edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom to contain a password, but running update-grub does not appear to include this in the grub.cfg file.

  The answer to this SO question has become stale: iOS version/device statistics - where can i find? because time currency wasn't part of that question, and iOS version updates have been release since this question was asked. Is there a web site or other publicly available source which keeps a current or frequently updated list of the percentages of iOS devices and OS versions in use, perhaps by continual monitoring of app analytics or web site logs or other means? And what device or OS information are iOS app analytics currently allowed to report, if any? (...assuming an appropriate privacy policy and adhering to such, of course.)

• I'd like to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit within same version

  I have a 32-bit installation of 11.10 on my 64-bit (4 GB) home AMD system. I have recently read up a bit on 64-bit version, and it seems that it would be a marginally better choice now for me. I have read about several methods to help reinstall all the various apps, using either dpkg's get-selections/set-selections and dselect in various ways, or using synaptic's save/get markings. The problem here is that I've read several variations, and I'm not sure which is best. I have enough disk space to do this with a brand new partition, so I'm not too worried about destroying anything, but I don't really want to make it my life's work, hence my appeal for expert tips. Since it's the same version, would it be safe to copy configuration files from the 32-bit system? I'd guess my home directory and /etc might be enough, and would save at least most of the time to reconfigure. But are there difference in configuration files in either of these directories for 32 vs 64 bits that might cause problems? After reinstalling to 64-bit, I can then continue along the 64 bit path for upgrades, but I thought it would be easier to switch the same version, than to try to reinstall apps and upgrade at the same time. Some methods I've seen suggested, among others: A. From Ubuntu forums On your old system (assuming it is still working), start up Synaptic and go: File->Save Markings and choose a file name along with a location (like a USB drive) that you can use when you have installed your new system). You need to check on the bottom: "Save full state, not only changes" This file contains a list of all your currently installed packages, and when you have installed and booted up your new system (and configured your repositories to the best for your location - as we all do, don't we?) then start up Synaptic and go: File-Read Markings and point it at your saved file, and after that has completed then select Apply to kick off the download & installation of all of those packages you had installed previously! B. From the same discussion: According to section 6.4.9 of the Debian Reference Manual, the following will save both the list of packages installed and their debconf configuration: # dpkg --get-selections "*" >myselections # or use \* # debconf-get-selections > debconfsel.txt and the following will reinstall and reconfigure them: # dselect update # debconf-set-selections < debconfsel.txt # dpkg --set-selections <myselections # apt-get -u dselect-upgrade # or dselect install C. A variation on the above I've seen a lot, this from stackoverflow: dpkg --get-selections > package_list then on the new install: cat package_list | sudo dpkg --set-selections && sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade I don't really understand B, or why it's slightly different than many others.
