• Why are Virtual Terminal Blank using NVIDIA propietary drivers?

  When using nouveau the fps are low compared to nvidia closed driver. But when booting, nvidia drivers show the ubuntu splash screen in a 900x800 resolution like nvidia its not loaded yet. When nouveau it splash in a decent resolution. The problem I'm having since karmic koala is I cant switch to virtual terminals with nvidia closed drivers. By the way, is the same PC: VAIO VPCCW19FX with NVIDIA G210M, now with precise amd64. • Move virtual machine hard disk to a separate physical hard disk for better performance?

  I have a dual-core machine with the host OS and many guest virtual OSs. Although I have 8GB of RAM, I notice a slowdown when I turn some virtual machine on (and it takes only 1GB RAM). I was told that I should move virtual machine hard disk file to a separate (another) physical hard drive in my PC to get better performance. This way the head of the hard disk would not have to jump from the virtual OS to the host OS as each hard drive would have its own head to deal with the OS: hard drive 1 head for host OS and hard drive 2 head for guest OS. Is this true? Should I get another hard disk only for virtual machine hard disk files?

• windows 2008 R2 TS printer security - can't take owership

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers. EDIT: added after Gregs comments regarding setacl below If I log into the TS server as Testusr and open Admin Tools Printer Admin (as administrator) and then type mydomain\testusr and the testusr's password, then I can change the ownership of the printer queue and set testusr as the owner. For those who are not aware of Virtual Box, it’s a virtualization software which enables u to install multiple operating systems on a virtual hard drive which in turn managed by Virtual Box. In short pack ur Operating System, Software, Files everything into a VM and carry it wherever u go. • One of my VMs went boom using Virtual Box and how it got fixed

  I am running an HP Envy 15, 16GB and 500GB (7200 RPM) Hard drive. Had a VM configured from another environment, created the virtual machine config file on Virtual Box, everything seemed ok. Fired it up, and it was  s   l   o   w, it took close to 10 minutes for it to load, and about 5 more to see Windows was in the process of loading before the BSOD.  Thought, maybe, just maybe it will not happen again … oh was I wrong. Frustration had already hit an all time high with this configuration and the number of issues I’ve had. How I did the troubleshooting … The best thing to do (IMO) is to step back, and gather your tools to debug this situation. Tools:  Virtual Box command line tools, Windows Debug. Virtual Box comes with a pretty good set of tools to examine, migrate and overall tasks to deal with VMs. The firs step:  use VBoxManage to prevent the VM from rebooting after the error to get enough time to really dig into the BSOD issue. Command used:   VBoxManage setextradata VMNAME "VBoxInternal/PDM/HaltOnReset" 1 Once this was done, the error reported was an “Inaccessible boot device” coming from a “Stop – 7B” type of error on the BSOD. The issue I had with this, my VM was configured to use a virtual SATA controller, and thought Windows 2008 R2 would handle this fine … again wrong!  Because the integration tools from the other product where wanting to take effect that was throwing everything off. The fix The fix was almost handed to me, edited the configuration for the VM, removed the SATA controller from it, added the virtual hard drive under an IDE controller, boot up and voilà … it works! I was then able to install the Virtual Box guest tools and such, but have decided to favor “keep on working” over “let’s try SATA again”

• Where is the virtual function call overhead?

  Hello everybody, I'm trying to benchmark the difference between a function pointer call and a virtual function call. To do this, I have written two pieces of code, that do the same mathematical computation over an array. One variant uses an array of pointers to functions and calls those in a loop. The other variant uses an array of pointers to a base class and calls its virtual function, which is overloaded in the derived classes to do absolutely the same thing as the functions in the first variant. Then I print the time elapsed and use a simple shell script to run the benchmark many times and compute the average run time. • How do I send a PDF in a MemoryStream to the printer in .Net?

  I have a PDF created in memory using iTextSharp and contained in a MemoryStream. I now need to translate that MemoryStream PDF into something the printer understands. I've used Report Server in the past to render the pages to the printer format but I cant use it for this project. Is there a native .Net way of doing this? For example, GhostScript would be OK if it was a .Net assembly but I don't want to bundle any non .Net stuff along with my installer. The PrintDocument class in .Net is great for sending content to the printer but I still need to translate it from a PDF stream into GDI at the page level. Any good hints? Thanks in advance Ryan

  I have a Star TSP100 printer and I'm having few problems with it really. My problem is that I'm not as familiar with programming as I should be - but I'm learning! The programmers reference for the Star printer says that if I send a ESC d to the printer - that will activate the built-in cutter - which I would like to do very much. My problem is that I have no idea how to send an escape code like that from within PERL - if it's even possible. I really appreciate any advice on this one.

The problem is that I can't tell which one is a good one to buy from. How can I tell if the store has a good reputation. I don't want to pay, and then not receive the item.   You know how everytime you go to a photocopying shop, photocopiers always have a neat zoom function (it can take whatever you give it, and zoom it in/out, so your copy comes out smaller or larger). I got one of those neat 3-in-one printer machines. It has a copy button on it, but it also has some software that comes with it (Epson SX115 to be exact is the model). Apart from going into some photo manipulation application, is there some way (software) to give it that feature. So, in short, I need something that can scan a page, scale it to let's say, a quarter of its size, and then print it out ? Anyone knows of anything like that ?

• Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

• Distributing my Application inside a Debian Virtual Machine Image-- How to meet GPL obligations?

  I have a Linux application I've developed, and I have created a standalone VMWare Image that people can download to try out the application without needing to install and configure a Linux Server. I created this VMWare Image by starting with a base Debian system, installing a bunch of packages and then configuring all the packages and daemons my application depends on. Upon load, the VMWare Image boots right into an X Server running only my application and no Window manager, so its more of a "Virtual Appliance" than a normal Linux Desktop environment. Users generally will never see a command prompt or any application other than my own. (My application itself I have a handle on the licensing issues of) Now I would like to distribute this image, but I'm not sure how to meet my GPL (and other licenses the various Debian components are released under) Obligations. As I understand it, I have two primary obligations to meet. Providing Copyright and License Information for each component I use. As I understand it, all the information I am required to present is located in the /usr/share directory in the Debian, but since my users generally will never touch a console or terminal, they will never see this. Does providing a text file containing a concatenation of all the files inside /usr/share meet this obligation Making source code available for all components I distribute. Since I am not creating the image from source, but from binary packages, I can't provide the actual source code that results in exactly my image being generated. Does providing an ftp mirror and an offer to send that mirror on DVDs of the Debian source debs for all the packages I use meet this obligation? Anything Else I'm required to do to legally distribute this image?

• How small (spec wise) can a virtual machine be and still boot up and run some sort of OS?

  One of the advantages with virtual machines is that you can be very flexible with their sizes. If the host system permits it, you can have a very large virtual machine with a lot of virtual RAM and disk. Also, you can decide to go the other way around, to give the virtual machine a very modest amount of RAM and disk and then choose and configure the OS appropriately. The question is, how small virtual machines have people managed to setup (and get to both boot up and to run)? Virtual machines doing something usuful is preferable, even if I know "useful" in this context is awfully subjective, but laboratory-cases with a configuration stripped beyond common sense could be intresting as well, just to see what people manage to boot and run. Quite open ended question and quite academic, but think of it: an extremely small VM (which still does something useful) takes very little memory and disk and can be quite quickly saved to and restored from disk. If it's also gentle on CPU resources, one might consider having a huge number of such VMs up and running on a host. (Imagine a VM running just an old Commodore 64 or Commodore Amiga in it. Ok, way wrong CPU architecture for modern Virtualization software running on a x86-based PC but still an interesting thought. You could have quite a few such small VMs running on a modern PC.)

  I'm struggling with calling a virtual function in C++. I'm not experienced in C++, I mainly use C# and Java so I might have some delusions, but bear with me. I have to write a program where I have to avoid dynamic memory allocation if possible. There is no need for dynamic memory allocation, I can just write: List<Object> objects; MyObject obj; objects.add(obj); MyObject inherits form Object. Object has a virtual function which is supposed to be overridden in MyObject: struct Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 0.0f; } }; struct MyObject: public Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 1.0f; } }; I get the elements as: objects.get(0).method(asdf); The problem is that even though the first element is a MyObject, the Object's method function is called. I'm guessing there is something wrong with storing the object in an array of Objects without dynamically allocating memory for the MyObject, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to call MyObject's method function? How? It's supposed to be a heterogeneous collection btw, so that's why the inheritance is there in the first place. If there is no way to call the MyObject's method function, then how should I make my list in the first place?

• Xen and HyperVM build question on os template

  I recently built a server with hypervm and xen, now i know xen from command line, but hypervm ties into our whmcs and so its a requirement, however my question is this, when i build a new o/s template my partition table is gone, and i know why, but i was wondering if anyone has built anything in hypervm for adding in partition tables, so i dont have to reinvent the wheel :). i can do it command line in the created vm with fdisk, and i have tracked down the creation scripts for hypervm but i am unsure if these insert directly into the machine as it looks like a lot of the things it does are externalized and are for xen to assign things like ip address etc.. oh and on an aside when i go in to modify the .cnf file to change the boot disk from cdrom to drive on windows when i boot using hypervm it overwrites my setting again..frustrating as heck, i've been trying to track down where in the code it does this, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it if you did?

• Can't set up printing from Mac OS X (10.5.7) to an HP PSC 2410 shared from PC running Ubuntu 9.10

  I've got an HP PSC 2410 printer shared from a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation. I'm able to send documents to this printer over the network from another Ubuntu machine. But so far, I haven't been able to find a setup where I can send documents to that printer from a MacBook running 10.5.7. On the Mac side, when setting things up, I go into System Prefs Print & Fax, click on the "+" mark, select "IP", pick "IPP", enter the IP address of the Ubuntu box, leave the queue blank, enter the Name and location, and I think it's when I get to the "Print Using" (driver selection) part that I'm running into issues. If I use "Auto Select", it defaults to "Generic PostScript Printer", which I doubt the PSC 2410 is (and sure enough, if I print, the jobs don't go through). If I try "Select a driver to use...", there's not an option for an HP PSC 2400. This seems a little odd: I can plug the printer directly into one of our Macs and it immediately figures out the driver and I can print no problem, but that's apparently the way things work. So, that leaves one option: "Other", which, when selected, brings up a dialog apparently for the purpose of manually locating a driver. I've tried visiting HP's web site. They have drivers for earlier versions of Mac OS X, but state that after 10.4, Mac OS X should just come with the relevant drivers. I've also tried setting things up by interacting with the CUPS server on the Mac through a browser: I go to http://localhost:631/, select "Add New Printer", pick "Internet Printing Protocol (http)" for the Device selection, enter "http://ubuntu.machine.ip.address:631/printers/hp-psc-2400-series" for the Device URI, select "HP" for Make, and then on the next screen, we're back to the problem where the PSC 2400 just doesn't show up. There's an option to "provide a PPD file", which I assume would be the printer driver I can't find. A Google search for "HP PSC 2410 ppd Leopard" doesn't seem to yield much other than a reminder that the printer is supposed to just work out of the box on Leopard. A local search for ".ppd" or "2410" on either Mac also doesn't yield anything that looks like a relevant print driver. I'm totally stuck at this point. Any advice?

How can I remove all traces of the drivers from the cache so that it will install only from the CD and not from the Windows driver cache?

Somehow I suspect the VMWare hypervisor will be better tuned for hyperthreading (see my answer too) I'm seeing something curious. As I increase the number of cores on my Windows 7 x64 virtual machine, the overall compile time increases instead of decreasing. Compiling is usually very well suited for parallel processing as in the middle part (post dependency mapping) you can simply call a compiler instance on each of your .c/.cpp/.cs/whatever file to build partial objects for the linker to take over. So I would have imagined that compiling would actually scale very well with # of cores. But what I'm seeing is: 8 cores: 1.89 sec 4 cores: 1.33 sec 2 cores: 1.24 sec 1 core: 1.15 sec Is this simply a design artifact due to a particular vendor's hypervisor implementation (type2:virtualbox in my case) or something more pervasive across more VMs to make hypervisor implementations more simpler? With so many factors, I seem to be able to make arguments both for and against this behavior - so if someone knows more about this than me, I'd be curious to read your answer. Would be great but can't screwup my dev env right now. @Mr Lister, @philosodad: Have 8 hw threads, using VirtualBox, so should be 1:1 mapping without emulation @Thorbjorn: I have 6.5GB for the VM and a smallish VS2012 project - it's quite unlikely that I'm swapping in/out trashing the page file. @All: If someone can point to an open source VS2010/VS2012 project, that might be a better community reference than my (proprietary) VS2012 project. Orchard and DNN seem to need environment tweaking to compile in VS2012.   Just got a CanonMF5880dn and cannot print to it from Suse 11.1 MacBook prints w/o issue ping 192.168.1.103 no problem cups sees it as Canon MF5880/MF5840 PCL at URI socket://192.168.1.103:9100 cups test print appears to submit and complete job but no action from printer Yast also seems to install printer correctly CQue2 also seems to install printer correctly all attempts to print yield same results: Suse indicates job processed correctly and completely but no printing happens. firewall is off http://192.168.1.103 in FF gives me the printer config menus correctly What have I failed to do?

• Integration features enabled but drives not available

  Frustratingly, after a recent update to Windows XP mode integration features, the availability of shared disks from the hosts has been impaired. Does anyone know any kind of workaround or fix (excluding dropbox et al)? I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling as per http://www.sevenforums.com/virtualization/63710-refreshing-xp-mode.html#post568715 At one point restarting the machine appeared to have worked, but today again I am without access to my host. Interestingly audio and copy and paste to and from the machine are working.
