    Possible Duplicate: What's wrong with always being root? All modern brands of Linux highly discourage (or disable) one from running as root instead of a normal user. I do not understand why. As a "normal" user, one could Download a rouge program from the internet. Run it (After all, one isn't root, what can it do). It installs itself in .bashrc or .xinitrc It writes a rouge "sudo" and "su" and adds . to the path Not noticing that . is in path, one runs sudo. The rouge program now has root password and can do anything it wants in the system. Even if 3-6 doesn't happen, the program could still Be part of a botnet. Read all files in the home directory and send them back (mine for SS#, Credit Card numbers, bank account numbers, etc). Send spam. Run a backdoor server to allow an attacker a chance to connect to the machine to determine vulnerabilities. It seems that the whole "permissions" thing (root/non-root) is just to prevent amateur crackers from getting into the system, so the question is: Is there a point in avoiding running as root, and is there a way to protect oneself if one wants to run unsafe code?

Most other antivirus programs install many layers of protection and things running in the background and preform regular updates and system scans at inconvenient times. I want an antivirus program that I can simply right click and object and select "scan for viruses" and nothing more. Is there a reliable antivirus program out there that offers this and only this without the automatic updates, background processes, and intrusive automatic system scans? Note: this is for Windows.

    How can I make a script that will convert the text/data in a html textfield/textarea and send it to the server, which then saves it as a .txt file for storage? NOTE: I am hosting a website(for testing purposes) using Apache 2.2 on a Windows 7 machine. I downloaded PHP version 5.4.7, but have not yet installed on my server yet (not sure if I will need it, but also not sure how to install it). 1st problem: Saving text to server Html page/section with title textfield, text textarea, and submit button. You would enter a title, the text/notes you need in the textfield, then press the submit button to have it store the text in the textarea, as a .txt file on the server called .txt. 2nd problem: Opening text from server Html with list of all txt files OR textfield for entering in title, then submit button to send the title of the requested .txt file to the server, which would then load it up on the page.   • Wordpress hacked. Disabled hacked site but bad traffic continues [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY My Ubuntu 10.04 LTS VPS has been hacked, probably via a WordPress site. I was alerted to it when I noticed the incoming traffic was unusually high. A WordPress site was littered with eval(base64_decode(...)) code in lots of files. My fault, I had some files writeable by www-data which shouldn't have been. I've disabled that site (a2dissite ... and restart Apache). This has reduced it but I am still getting some malware type traffic. My server runs several WordPress and Drupal sites and a home grown PHP site. I have captured traffic with tcpdump and looked at it Wireshark. It's reaching out to the login page of some Joomla sites, trying multiple logins. The traffic stops when I stop Apache. If I a2dissite every site and reload (not restart) Apache the traffic continues. At that point I have no virtual hosts running and no DocumentRoot in my apache2.conf so I don't know how Apache is still running something. I have searched the other sites with grep for likely looking php code with no success. I may have missed it but I haven't found anything suspicious in the Apache logs. I have mod-status running. I haven't really seen anything much there except that someone is still trying to do a POST to the theme page on the disabled WordPress site but they now get a 404. What should I be looking for? Are there any tools or whatever which would give me more info about how Apache is generating that traffic? Thanks

Ideally the speech should be indistinguishable from a native American or English speaker. I'm looking for products with SDK or API that I can easily hook into. Just to clarify and iterate on my question - I'm not looking for things like Microsoft's free text-to-speech synthesis program, I'm looking for a high quality professional product.

  • Oracle JDBC connection exception in Solaris but not Windows?

    I have some Java code that connects to an Oracle database using DriverManager.getConnection(). It works just fine on my Windows XP machine. However, when running the same code on a Solaris machine, I get the following exception. Both machines can reach the database machine on the network. I have included the Oracle trace logs.   • Two NIC's 2 Internet Connections, 1 Windows Server 2008 RC2, Routing help required

    Hello, I have a Windows 2008 server and 4 other client machines on my home network. I have two internet connections. The main connection is setup with a home router and DHCP on that for all the clients on the network. The secondary connection is just a cable modem which is plugged directly into the server. Local Area Connection: This NIC has an external IP and is connected to the Cable Modem. Local Area Connection 2: This NIC has an internal IP (192.168.0.102) and allows access to all the internal computers. It also has internet access via the local router. So here lies the problem, I want to use the Cable connection on the server for the internet traffic (so that the traffic for server/clients are seperated) but I also need to maintain local access. I am wondering how to make it so that all the internet traffic goes via that NIC because at the moment it goes through the local NIC. As a secondary problem I would also like to forward the connection of one application used by the clients via the server and the cable/server internet because of poor routing for it on the main connection. This perhaps is something for another question though. Thanks for any help you can offer me. Regards PJ

I’m interested in those that are relevant in a typical home network and used over the Internet explains in detail how ADSL Internet connections work to the level of depth necessary so that I’m able to tweak and measure performance settings starts from the beginning but attempts to provide proper understanding rather than idiot-oriented steps to follow Basically, I’m interested in how these technologies work and tend to be implemented in hardware and software rather than “here’s what to do if…” I’m interested in Computer Networking by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

I'm trying to create a device (either from a standard AP or some other unconventional means) that will be able to detect nearby Wi-Fi enabled devices. For example, if a cellular phone (iPhone for instance) would be carried into the secured area, its MAC address will be logged. A cellular phone is a good example because it's the most common threat that should be detected. Some important points: The detection can be either active or passive, doesn't matter. The detected device might be connected to a different network, or might not be connected to anything at all. I assume most cellular phones are actively probing when not connected, but I'm not sure. It is important to not only identify the breach, but also to identify the device (MAC address). Conventional hardware is only optional. Distance of detection is at least 6 meters (20 feet). Handling one device at a time is good. Speed of detection is important, under 5 seconds is ideal. So my question is, is this even possible? If so, what can I use in order to make this a reality? I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?

Is there a VNC client or RDP software that can be embedded in a web page?     Passmark shows many varieties of Core i3, i5, and i7 cpus. Some of them, even at similar prices, are much faster than others. But Dell only offers a few options, and they're not the fast ones. For example, Dell offers the Core i5 650 (benchmark), which costs $220, and doesn't come close to the performance of the Core i3-2100 (benchmark), which costs $120. Does anyone sell systems with the faster, cheaper chips?

    In my current work we think we can get benefit from having a knowledge base, so the next time someone has a question/problem etc, that base can be consulted and an answer will show up. Also, it will reduce the risk from having people leaving the company with the knowledge and we would have to start all over again. My question is, what strategy can we follow to implement/buy/get/build/etc this knowledge base? Are there software ready for this? Would it be better to have something build by ourselves ( we have some programmers ) This is an small company ( < 30 ) and the base should be accessible from outside the office ( when the employees are with the customer etc.) so I guess a webapp is in order.

    Of course this sounds like a joke question, but it's meant seriously. I remember being told by an old system administrator back in the early nineties about people asking about good FTPs for porn, and that they would as a joke always tell them to connect to 127.0.0.1. They would come back saying that there was a lot of porn at that address, but that oddly enough it seemed like they already had it all. Point being, it seems like it's been around for quite a while. Anyway. Considering that a considerable portion of the internet is devoted to porn these days, it would be interesting to know if someone has any kind of idea as to when and where the phenomena first arose? There must be some mention of this in old hacker folk lore? (Changed to CW to emphasize that this isn't about rep, but about genuine curiousity. :)

    I have a two dedicated servers to choose from depending on which one would do a better job. I plan on updating the Hard Drive space and RAM at a later date depending on how I move forward. Server 1: 500GB Hard Drive 8GB RAM 2x 64bit Intel Xeon L5420(Quad Core) @ 2.50Ghz Server2: 500GB Hard Drive 8GB RAM 2x 64bit Intel Xeon E5420(Quad Core) @ 2.50GHz I want to run a virtual machine that will host about 10 game servers, with about 16 active slots per server. It will be a mix and match from: Minecraft Counter Strike( 1.6, Source, Global Offensive) Battlefield Team Fortress I know the general consensus is virtualization is a horrible idea if you plan on running virtual servers on them. The issue is, the discussions I read do not really clearly state whether they are speaking about a virtual server running inside an OS(ie: VMware Player running on Windows with the game server in a VM) or a Hypervisor such as Xen Cloud Platform. I am trying to get a definite answer on how feasible the above would be and how much of a performance hit it might be if the VM running the game servers is on a hypervisor such as Xen Cloud Platform. My initial research lead me to believe that there wouldn't be a performance hit since the virtualization is different than running it via inside of a OS.

  • Does VMware_ThinApp_4.0.3_169725.msi contain Trojan.Win32.Vapsup in it? [closed]

    Today I ran a full system scan using Online Armor++. It detected Trojans in the installer. I have had this installer on the computer for many months and I do not remember if I ever installed it on this PC or not. For some reason I unpacked the installer with 7zip though. I was probably going to attempt to make it portable. Anyway so I had the installer in a folder, and another folder next to it with all of the installers files unpacked. The VMwareVS.cab file that was extracted from the installer, also had its files extracted into another folder. This was all done many months ago. OA++ did not detect the installer itself as as Trojan VMwareVS.cab, but it did detect 4 of the files that I had unpacked as Trojans. Here are the details of what the scan detected on my PC today. Note: I uploaded these files to VirusTotal....the Ikarus and A-squared engines(the engines from Online Armor++) are not detecting anything. But some of the other engines are detecting the same Trojan that OA++ detected(Trojan.Win32.Vapsup). The app could either be a stand alone app installed on the mobile phone than could click snaps at predefined intervals or if there is a app that I can install on my PC and then control my phone's camera via bluetooth or wifi or anything else.     I have quite the eccentric client who wants to move all his ecommerce websites (about 5-10, all PHP/MySQL) to his own web server that I'm supposed to build. He doesn't want to hear anything about VPS hosting and all the issues and expenses related to owning a server. My responsibility would be to buy all the hardware, install and configure software, etc. How much should I charge for this? I'm planning to start with two relatively moderate Dell PowerEdge C2100 servers, one for web (NGINX), one for db (MySQL).
