• MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

  On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. • How to install rgdal on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. ERROR: configuration failed for package ‘rgdal’ * removing ‘/home/rdk/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/rgdal’ Warning in install.packages : installation of package ‘rgdal’ had non-zero exit status R-sig-Geo, this two SE questions and other websites pointed me to the requirements of libgdal1-dev.   I'm trying to compile php 5.4.7 on mac osx 10.6.8.   I am trying my hands at GLFW library. I have written a basic program to get OpenGL renderer and vendor string. This means that getting along with everyone else here is very important to me. Hope it helps Hi fellow student, I noticed that you're working on a project, using a library that I'm interested in. Can we setup a time so I can learn about this library from you? This model of interaction works very well for me. However, there is one fellow student, who manages to make my life hell beyond all of this (his name is not important, let's just call him "Sam"). He seems to be always (pardon my crass description) high and completely unwilling to contribute to a constructive, academic conversation. He's a pretty smart guy, but just comes across as (I hate to say something like this about a fellow student, but) an imbecile. He also has ignorant opinions on important topics, some of which pertain to my specialization (AI, NLP, etc), and when I try to explain to him why he's wrong, all he does is insult me and put me in a foul mood. I have tried ignoring him (sitting somewhere else in the lab, headphones, etc), but he seems to like doing this because he approaches me and no amount of "leave me alone" seems to do the trick. • Sending UDP/514 data magically appears in syslog without rsyslog running

  I’m using a programming language without a library to log to rsyslog over UDP. I thought I was going to need to write a library but I discovered something weird. If I send data on UDP/514 with the port open on the server then the data appears in the server’s syslog. rsyslogd isn’t running so syslog isn’t doing this. Data doesn’t get formatted into a syslog message so rsyslogd really isn’t doing this (only raw text enters syslog). Linux must see the data coming in on this port and know that it should go into /var/log/messages? If I do the same on another port (e.g. UDP/515) then nothing appears in the log! What is doing this? Some CentOS feature? The kernel?

• HP Officejet 6000 E609n unexpectedly goes offline

  My local library has a number of Windows Vista SP1 PCs connected to two HP Officejet 6000 E609n wireless printers. Each PC can print to either of the two printers and one of the two printers is the default on each PC. This configuration has worked well over the last year w/o any trouble. Recently, the library staff is reporting that sometimes when patrons try to print, they can't. Closer inspection shows that the the default wireless printer is offline. In order to get the printer online again, the printer has to be restarted. In Control Panel Printers applet, under the Printer menu, the "Use Printer Offline" option is grayed out and there's no way to bring the printer back online w/o restarting it. Does anyone know what's going on here?

  for a long time I dream to have a songs lastfm tags in my music library, so I can use them to quickly generate playlists. There used to be a way to do that in amarok 1.4, but it never was stable. Than there is MusicBrainz Picard's lastfm/lastfmplus plugin. It is partially fine, but I cannot manage to make it look ONLY for the lastfm tags and put them into comments/genre/whatever but it always hast to tag everything. And it isn't particularly good with it, especially with small bands, songs without album etc. My music library is rather well organised. Most of the tags are correct. I also have quite some songs without an album. And I don't want it to find the albums for those songs, since it'd mess up my album view. So it must not touch the fields track name, track number, artist and album. All I want is that the most popular lastfm tags get into the genre or comments tag of the mp3, separated by semicolons, commas or whatever. I think I remember a script that did this job, but I cannot find. Does anybody know if there is anything like this? Would it be to hard to write this, for example as Banshee plugin? Thank you

• Limitations of the SharePoint join using CAML

  Limitation One In SharePoint 2010, you can join the primary list to a foreign list and include more than one field from the foreign list. However, the limitation is that the included fields from foreign list have to be the following type: Calculated (treated as plain text) ContentTypeId Counter Currency DateTime Guid Integer Note (one-line only) Number Text The above limitation also explains why you cannot include some types of the fields from the remote list when creating a lookup. Limitation Two When using CAML query to join SharePoint lists, there can be joins to multiple lists, multiple joins to the same list, and chains of joins. However, the limitations are only inner and left outer joins are permitted and the field in the primary list must be a Lookup type field that looks up to the field in the foreign list. Limitation Three The support for writing the JOIN query in CAML is very limited.I have to hand-code the CAML query to join the lists,not fun at all.Although some blogs post mentioned about using LINQ to SharePoint and get the CAML code from there , but I never get it to work.You can check this blog post  for this.Let me know if it works for you.   I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! Even if you have "Grab when cursor enters window" option set, VMware won't grab your pointer when you move mouse into the VMware window. Also, if you use Ctrl-G to capture the pointer, VMware window will release it as soon as you move mouse around a little bit. Quite annoying behavior... Fortunately, there's a simple workaround that can fix things until VMware resolves incompatibilities with the new GTK library. VMware Workstation ships with many standard libraries including libgtk, so the only thing you need to do is to force it to use it's own versions. The simplest way to do that is to add the following line to the end of the /etc/vmware/bootstrap configuration file and restart the Workstation. export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" The interface will look slightly odd, because older version of GTK is being used, but at least it will work properly. Note: After upgrading a new Linux kernel, it is necessary to compile the VMware modules, this requires to temporarily comment the export line in /etc/vmware/bootstrap.

• Trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (without using MacPorts)

  I'm having trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 (build 20100307) from the prebuilt installer on Mac OS X 10.5.8. The installer is halting telling me that I need to install Python 2.6 to continue. I've installed the latest version of Python (2.6.5) twice now but it's not helping. which python is reporting /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/python, but I can see that I also have 2.3 and 2.5 in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions directory, which I suspect is being picked up by the installer ahead of the 2.6 install. If possible I'd like to install Mercurial and Python without having to resort to MacPorts, but if that is the only option then so be it :)

• Approach for developing software that will need to be ported to multiple mobile platforms in the future

  I am currently doing the preliminary design for a new product my company will be pushing out soon. We will start on Android, but then we will need to quickly develop the IPhone, IPad.... and then the Windows 8 ports of the application. Basically the only code that wouldn't be reusable is the view specific code and the multimedia functions. This will be an SIP client (of course the user of the app will not know this) with several bells and whistles for our own business specific purposes. My initial thought is to develop all of the engine in C and provide a nice API for the C library since JAVA and .NET will allow native invoking, and I should just be able to directly link to the C lib in objective-C. Is there a better approach for vast code reuse which also remains close to the native platform? I.e. I don't want dependencies such as Mono-droid and the like or complicated interpreter/translator schemes. I don't mind re-coding the view(s) for each platform, but I do not want to have multiple versions of the main engine. Also, if I want to have some good abstraction mechanisms (like I would in say, C++) is this possible? I have read that C++ is not allowed for the IPad and Iphone devices. I would love to handle the media decoding in the C library, but I assume that this will be platform dependent so that probably will not be an option either. Any ideas here?
