  • Schema to support dynamic properties

    - by Johan Fredrik Varen
    Hi people. I'm working on an editor that enables its users to create "object" definitions in real-time. A definition can contain zero or more properties. A property has a name a type. Once a definition is created, a user can create an object of that definition and set the property values of that object. So by the click of a mouse-button, the user should ie. be able to create a new definition called "Bicycle", and add the property "Size" of type "Numeric". Then another property called "Name" of type "Text", and then another property called "Price" of type "Numeric". Once that is done, the user should be able to create a couple of "Bicycle" objects and fill in the "Name" and "Price" property values of each bike. Now, I've seen this feature in several software products, so it must be a well-known concept. My problem started when I sat down and tried to come up with a DB schema to support this data structure, because I want the property values to be stored using the appropriate column types. Ie. a numeric property value is stored as, say, an INT in the database, and a textual property value is stored as VARCHAR. First, I need a table that will hold all my object definitions: Table obj_defs id | name | ---------------- 1 | "Bicycle" | 2 | "Book" | Then I need a table for holding what sort of properties each object definition should have: Table prop_defs id | obj_def_id | name | type | ------------------------------------ 1 | 1 | "Size" | ? | 2 | 1 | "Name" | ? | 3 | 1 | "Price" | ? | 4 | 2 | "Title" | ? | 5 | 2 | "Author" | ? | 6 | 2 | "ISBN" | ? | I would also need a table that holds each object: Table objects id | created | updated | ------------------------------ 1 | 2011-05-14 | 2011-06-15 | 2 | 2011-05-14 | 2011-06-15 | 3 | 2011-05-14 | 2011-06-15 | Finally, I need a table that will hold the actual property values of each object, and one solution is for this table to have one column for each possible value type, such as this: Table prop_vals id | prop_def_id | object_id | numeric | textual | boolean | ------------------------------------------------------------ 1 | 1 | 1 | 27 | | | 2 | 2 | 1 | | "Trek" | | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1249 | | | 4 | 1 | 2 | 26 | | | 5 | 2 | 2 | | "GT" | | 6 | 3 | 2 | 159 | | | 7 | 4 | 3 | | "It" | | 8 | 5 | 3 | | "King" | | 9 | 6 | 4 | 9 | | | If I implemented this schema, what would the "type" column of the prop_defs table hold? Integers that each map to a column name, varchars that simply hold the column name? Any other possibilities? Would a stored procedure help me out here in some way? And what would the SQL for fetching the "name" property of object 2 look like?

  • How to fix the position of the button in applet

    - by user1609804
    I'm trying to make an applet that has a buttons in the right, where each button is corresponding to a certain pokemon. I already did it, but the buttons isn't fixed.they keep following the mouse. please help. This is my code: import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.image.BufferedImage; import java.io.*; import javax.imageio.ImageIO; import java.applet.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.awt.*; public class choosePokemon extends Applet implements ActionListener { private int countPokemon; private int[] storePokemon; private int x,y; //this will be the x and y coordinate of the button BufferedImage Picture; public int getCountPokemon(){ //for other class that needs how many pokemon return countPokemon; } public int[] getStoredPokemon(){ //for other class that needs the pokemon return storePokemon; } public void init(){ x=0;y=0; try{ Picture = ImageIO.read(new File("pokeball.png")); } catch( IOException ex ){ } } public void paint( Graphics g ){ pokemon display = new pokemon(); // to access the pokemon attributes in class pokemon ButtonGroup group = new ButtonGroup(); //create a button group for( int a=0;a<16;a++ ){ // for loop in displaying the buttons of every pokemon(one pokemon, one button) display.choose( a ); //calls the method choose in which accepts an integer from 0-15 and saves the attributes of the pokemon corresponding to the integer JButton pokemonButton = new JButton( display.getName() ); // creates the button pokemonButton.setActionCommand( display.getName() ); // isasave sa actioncommand yung name ng kung ano mang pokemon pokemonButton.addActionListener(this); //isasama yung bagong gawang button sa listener para malaman kung na-click yung button pokemonButton.setBounds( x,y,50,23 ); group.add( pokemonButton ); //eto naman yung mag-aadd sa bagong gawang button sa isang group na puro buttons(button ng mga pokemon) y+=23; if( a==7 ){ x+=50; y=0; } add( pokemonButton ); //will add the button to the applet } g.drawImage( Picture, 120, 20, null ); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { try{ //displays the picture of the selected pokemon Picture = ImageIO.read(new File( "pokemon/" + e.getActionCommand() + ".png" )); } catch( IOException ex ){ } } public boolean chosen( int PChoice ){ //this will check if the chosen pokemon is already the player's pokemon boolean flag = false; for( int x=0; x<countPokemon && !flag ;x++ ){ if( storePokemon[x]==PChoice ){ flag = true; } } return flag; }

  • WPF: Improving Performance for Running on Older PCs

    - by Phil Sandler
    So, I'm building a WPF app and did a test deployment today, and found that it performed pretty poorly. I was surprised, as we are really not doing much in the way of visual effects or animations. I deployed on two machines: the fastest and the slowest that will need to run the application (the slowest PC has an Intel Celeron 1.80GHz with 2GB RAM). The application ran pretty well on the faster machine, but was choppy on the slower machine. And when I say "choppy", I mean the cursor jumped even just passing it over any open window of the app that had focus. I opened the Task Manager Performance window, and could see that the CPU usage jumped whenever the app had focus and the cursor was moving over it. If I gave focus to another (e.g. Excel), the CPU usage went back down after a second. This happened on both machines, but the choppiness was only noticeable on the slower machine. I had very limited time to tinker on the deployment machines, so didn't do a lot of detailed testing. The app runs fine on my development machine, but I also see the CPU spiking up to 10% there, just running the cursor over the window. I downloaded the WPF performance tool from MS and have been tinkering with it (on my dev machine). The docs say this about the "Frame Rate" metric in the Perforator tool: For applications without animation, this value should be near 0. The app is not doing any heavy animation, but the frame rate stays near 50 when the cursor is over any window. The screens I tested on have column headers in a grid that "highlight" and buttons that change color and appearance when scrolled over. Even moving the mouse on blank areas of the windows cause the same Frame rate and CPU usage (doesn't seem to be related to these minor animations). (Also, I am unable to figure out how to get anything but the two default tools--Perforator and Visual Profiler--installed into the WPF performance tool. That is probably a separate question). I also have Redgate's profiling tool, but I'm not sure if that can shed any light on rendering performance. So, I realize this is not an easy thing to troubleshoot without specifics or sample code (which I can't post). My questions are: What are some general things to look for (or avoid) in the code to improve performance? What steps can I take using the WPF performance tool to narrow down the problem? Is the PC spec listed above (Intel Celeron 1.80GHz with 2GB RAM) too slow to be running even vanilla WPF applications?

  • div popup inside td

    - by sims
    I have a table with a bunch of cells. (No way! Amazing! :P) Some of the cells have a small div that when you put your mouse over, it gets bigger so you can read all the text. This works well and all. However, since html elements that come later in the document have a higher z-index, when the div gets bigger it is underneath the other divs in the other cells. Some html code: <table> <tr> <td> limited info <div style="position: relative;"> <div style="position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 1em; height: 1em;" onmouseover="tooltipshow(this)" onmouseout="tooltiphide(this)"> informative long text is here </div> </div> </td> <td> some short info <div style="position: relative;"> <div style="position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 1em; height: 1em;" onmouseover="tooltipshow(this)" onmouseout="tooltiphide(this)"> longer explanation about what is really going on that covers the div up there ^^^. darn! </div> </div> </td> </tr> </table> Some js code: function tooltipshow(obj) { obj.style.width = '30em'; obj.style.zIndex = '100'; } function tooltiphide(obj) { obj.style.width = '1em'; obj.style.zIndex = '20'; } It doesn't matter if I set z-index dynamically to something higher onmouseover. It's like z-index has no affect. I think it has something to do with the table. I've tested this in FF3. When I'm feeling particularly macho, I'll test it in IE.

  • extensible database design: automatic ALTER TABLE or serialize() field BLOB ?

    - by mario
    I want an adaptable database scheme. But still use a simple table data gateway in my application, where I just pass an $data[] array for storing. The basic columns are settled in the initial table scheme. There will however arise a couple of meta fields later (ca 10-20). I want some flexibility there and not adapt the database manually each time, or -worse- change the application logic just because of new fields. So now there are two options which seem workable yet not overkill. But I'm not sure about the scalability or database drawbacks. (1) Automatic ALTER TABLE. Whenever the $data array is to be saved, the keys are compared against the current database columns. New columns get defined before the $data is INSERTed into the table. Actually seems simple enough in test code: function save($data, $table="forum") { // columns if ($new_fields = array_diff(array_keys($data), known_fields($table))) { extend_schema($table, $new_fields, $data); } // save $columns = implode("`, `", array_keys($data)); $qm = str_repeat(",?", count(array_keys($data)) - 1); echo ("INSERT INTO `$table` (`$columns`) VALUES (?$qm);"); function known_fields($table) { return unserialize(@file_get_contents("db:$table")) ?: array("id"); function extend_schema($table, $new_fields, $data) { foreach ($new_fields as $field) { echo("ALTER TABLE `$table` ADD COLUMN `$field` VARCHAR;"); Since it is mostly meta information fields, adding them just as VARCHAR seems sufficient. Nobody will query by them anyway. So the database is really just used as storage here. However, while I might want to add a lot of new $data fields on the go, they will not always be populated. (2) serialize() fields into BLOB. Any new/extraneous meta fields could be opaque to the database. Simply sorting out the virtual fields from the real database columns is simple. And the meta fields can just be serialize()d into a blob/text field then: function ext_save($data, $table="forum") { $db_fields = array("id", "content", "flags", "ext"); // disjoin foreach (array_diff(array_keys($data),$db_fields) as $key) { $data["ext"][$key] = $data[$key]; unset($data[$key]); } $data["ext"] = serialize($data["ext"]); Unserializing and unpacking this 'ext' column on read queries is a minor overhead. The advantage is that there won't be any sparsely filled columns in the database, so I guess it's compacter and faster than the AUTO ALTER TABLE approach. Of course, this method prevents ever using one of the new fields in a WHERE or GROUP BY clause. But I think none of the possible meta fields (user_agent, author_ip, author_img, votes, hits, last_modified, ..) would/should ever be used there anyway. So I currently prefer the 'ext' blob approach, even if it's a one-way ticket. How are such columns called usually? (looking for examples/doc) Would you use XML serialization for (very theoretical) in-database queries? The adapting table scheme seems a "cleaner" interface, even if most columns might remain empty then. How does that impact speed? How many such sparse VARCHAR fields can MySQL/innodb stomach? But most importantly: Is there any standard implementation for this? A pseudo ORM with automatic ALTER TABLE tricks? Storing a simple column list seems workable, but something like pdo::getColumnMeta would be more robust.

  • Multiple instances of this carousel on a single page - can't get it to work

    - by Andy
    This code comes from a tutorial so it's not originally my own work. What I am trying to do is implement this several times on a single page. I have tried and so far failed - by numbering the id "carousel" and so forth. Any help would be seriously appreciated. I'm tearing my hair out. http://jsfiddle.net/AndyMP/zcKDV/5/ For completeness.. this is the carousel JQuery as it stands. //rotation speed and timer var speed = 5000; var run = setInterval('rotate()', speed); //grab the width and calculate left value var item_width = $('#slides li').outerWidth(); var left_value = item_width * (-1); //move the last item before first item, just in case user click prev button $('#slides li:first').before($('#slides li:last')); //set the default item to the correct position $('#slides ul').css({'left' : left_value}); //if user clicked on prev button $('#prev').click(function() { //get the right position var left_indent = parseInt($('#slides ul').css('left')) + item_width; //slide the item $('#slides ul').animate({'left' : left_indent}, 200,function(){ //move the last item and put it as first item $('#slides li:first').before($('#slides li:last')); //set the default item to correct position $('#slides ul').css({'left' : left_value}); }); //cancel the link behavior return false; }); //if user clicked on next button $('#next').click(function() { //get the right position var left_indent = parseInt($('#slides ul').css('left')) - item_width; //slide the item $('#slides ul').animate({'left' : left_indent}, 200, function () { //move the first item and put it as last item $('#slides li:last').after($('#slides li:first')); //set the default item to correct position $('#slides ul').css({'left' : left_value}); }); //cancel the link behavior return false; }); //if mouse hover, pause the auto rotation, otherwise rotate it $('#slides').hover( function() { clearInterval(run); }, function() { run = setInterval('rotate()', speed); } ); //a simple function to click next link //a timer will call this function, and the rotation will begin :) function rotate() { $('#next').click(); }

  • Javascript - Canvas image never appears on first function run

    - by Matt
    I'm getting a bit of a weird issue, the image never shows the first time you run the game in your browser, after that you see it every time. If you close your browser and re open it and run the game again, the same issue occurs - you don't see the image the first time you run it. Here's the issue in action, just hit a wall and there's no image the first time on the end game screen. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Matt function showGameOver() { ctx.clearRect(0, 0, canvas.width, canvas.height); ctx.fillStyle = "black"; ctx.font = "16px sans-serif"; ctx.fillText("Game Over!", ((canvas.width / 2) - (ctx.measureText("Game Over!").width / 2)), 50); ctx.font = "12px sans-serif"; ctx.fillText("Your Score Was: " + score, ((canvas.width / 2) - (ctx.measureText("Your Score Was: " + score).width / 2)), 70); myimage = new Image(); myimage.src = "xcLDp.gif"; var size = [119, 26], //set up size coord = [443, 200]; ctx.font = "12px sans-serif"; ctx.fillText("Restart", ((canvas.width / 2) - (ctx.measureText("Restart").width / 2)), 197); ctx.drawImage( //draw it on canvas myimage, coord[0], coord[1], size[0], size[1] ); $("canvas").click(function(e) { //when click.. if ( testIfOver(this, e, size, coord) ) { startGame(); //reload } }); $("canvas").mousemove(function(e) { //when mouse moving if ( testIfOver(this, e, size, coord) ) { $(this).css("cursor", "pointer"); //change the cursor } else { $(this).css("cursor", "default"); //change it back } }); function testIfOver(ele,ev,size,coord){ if ( ev.pageX > coord[0] + ele.offsetLeft && ev.pageX < coord[0] + size[0] + ele.offsetLeft && ev.pageY > coord[1] + ele.offsetTop && ev.pageY < coord[1] + size[1] + ele.offsetTop ) { return true; } return false; } }

  • Google maps sometimes does not return a geocoded value for string

    - by XGreen
    Hi Guys, I have the following code: It basically looks into a HTML list and geocodes and markets each item. it does it correctly 8 out of ten but sometimes I get an error I set for show in the console. I can't think of anything. Any thoughts is much appreciated. $(function () { var map = null; var geocoder = null; function initialize() { if (GBrowserIsCompatible()) { // Specifies that the element with the ID map is the container for the map map = new GMap2(document.getElementById("map")); // Sets an initial map positon (which mainly gets ignored after reading the adderesses list) map.setCenter(new GLatLng(37.4419, -122.1419), 13); // Instatiates the google Geocoder class geocoder = new GClientGeocoder(); map.addControl(new GSmallMapControl()); // Sets map zooming controls on the map map.enableScrollWheelZoom(); // Allows the mouse wheel to control the map while on it } } function showAddress(address, linkHTML) { if (geocoder) { geocoder.getLatLng(address, function (point) { if (!point) { console.log('Geocoder did not return a location for ' + address); } else { map.setCenter(point, 8); var marker = new GMarker(point); map.addOverlay(marker); // Assigns the click event to each marker to open its balloon GEvent.addListener(marker, "click", function () { marker.openInfoWindowHtml(linkHTML); }); } } ); } } // end of show address function initialize(); // This iterates through the text of each address and tells the map // to show its location on the map. An internal error is thrown if // the location is not found. $.each($('.addresses li a'), function () { var addressAnchor = $(this); showAddress(addressAnchor.text(), $(this).parent().html()); }); }); which looks into this HTML: <ul class="addresses"> <li><a href="#">Central London</a></li> <li><a href="#">London WC1</a></li> <li><a href="#">London Shoreditch</a></li> <li><a href="#">London EC1</a></li> <li><a href="#">London EC2</a></li> <li><a href="#">London EC3</a></li> <li><a href="#">London EC4</a></li> </ul>

  • OpenGL Coordinate system confusion

    - by user146780
    Maybe I set up GLUT wrong. Basically I want verticies to be reletive to their size in pixels. Ex:right now if I create a hexagon, it hakes up the whole screen even though the units are 6. #include <iostream> #include <stdlib.h> //Needed for "exit" function #include <cmath> //Include OpenGL header files, so that we can use OpenGL #ifdef __APPLE__ #include <OpenGL/OpenGL.h> #include <GLUT/glut.h> #else #include <GL/glut.h> #endif using namespace std; //Called when a key is pressed void handleKeypress(unsigned char key, //The key that was pressed int x, int y) { //The current mouse coordinates switch (key) { case 27: //Escape key exit(0); //Exit the program } } //Initializes 3D rendering void initRendering() { //Makes 3D drawing work when something is in front of something else glEnable(GL_DEPTH_TEST); } //Called when the window is resized void handleResize(int w, int h) { //Tell OpenGL how to convert from coordinates to pixel values glViewport(0, 0, w, h); glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); //Switch to setting the camera perspective //Set the camera perspective glLoadIdentity(); //Reset the camera gluPerspective(45.0, //The camera angle (double)w / (double)h, //The width-to-height ratio 1.0, //The near z clipping coordinate 200.0); //The far z clipping coordinate } //Draws the 3D scene void drawScene() { //Clear information from last draw glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); glLoadIdentity(); //Reset the drawing perspective glPolygonMode(GL_FRONT_AND_BACK, GL_FILL); glBegin(GL_POLYGON); //Begin quadrilateral coordinates //Trapezoid glColor3f(255,0,0); for(int i = 0; i < 6; ++i) { glVertex2d(sin(i/6.0*2* 3.1415), cos(i/6.0*2* 3.1415)); } glEnd(); //End quadrilateral coordinates glutSwapBuffers(); //Send the 3D scene to the screen } int main(int argc, char** argv) { //Initialize GLUT glutInit(&argc, argv); glutInitDisplayMode(GLUT_DOUBLE | GLUT_RGBA | GLUT_DEPTH); glutInitWindowSize(400, 400); //Set the window size //Create the window glutCreateWindow("Basic Shapes - videotutorialsrock.com"); initRendering(); //Initialize rendering //Set handler functions for drawing, keypresses, and window resizes glutDisplayFunc(drawScene); glutKeyboardFunc(handleKeypress); glutReshapeFunc(handleResize); glutMainLoop(); //Start the main loop. glutMainLoop doesn't return. return 0; //This line is never reached } How can I make it so that a polygon of 0,0 10,0 10,10 0,10 defines a polygon starting at the top left of the screen and is a width and height of 10 pixels? Thanks

  • index seems to be out of sync for jquery .keydown and .click methods

    - by Growler
    I'd like to navigate images using both keyboard and mouse (clicking left and right arrow images). I'm using Jquery to do this, but the shared imgIndex seems to be off from the .keydown function and the .click function... Whenever .keydown function -- or ++ the imgIndex, isn't that changed index also used in the click function? So shouldn't they always be on the same index? keydown function: <script type="text/javascript"> var imgArray = [<?php echo implode(',', getImages($site)) ?>]; $(document).ready(function() { var img = document.getElementById("showimg"); img.src = imgArray[<?php echo $imgid ?>]; var imgIndex = <?php echo $imgid ?>; alert(imgIndex); $(document).keydown(function (e) { var key = e.which; var rightarrow = 39; var leftarrow = 37; var random = 82; if (key == rightarrow) { imgIndex++; if (imgIndex > imgArray.length-1) { imgIndex = 0; } img.src = imgArray[imgIndex]; } if (key == leftarrow) { if (imgIndex == 0) { imgIndex = imgArray.length; } img.src = imgArray[--imgIndex]; } }); click function: Connected to left and right clickable images $("#next").click(function() { imgIndex++; if (imgIndex > imgArray.length-1) { imgIndex = 0; } img.src = imgArray[imgIndex]; }); $("#prev").click(function() { if (imgIndex == 0) { imgIndex = imgArray.length; } img.src = imgArray[--imgIndex]; }); }); Just so you have some visibility into the getImages php function: <?php function getImages($siteParam) { include 'dbconnect.php'; if ($siteParam == 'artwork') { $table = "artwork"; } else { $table = "comics"; } $catResult = $mysqli->query("SELECT id, title, path, thumb, views, catidFK FROM $table"); $img = array(); while($row = $catResult->fetch_assoc()) { $img[] = "'" . $row['path'] . "'"; } return $img; } ?> Much appreciated! Snapshot of where the script is on "view image.php"

  • Using my custom colormap in Java for images

    - by John
    Hi everyone! I've got a question concering a colormapping via index. I tried this code found on http://www.podgoretsky.pri.ee/ftp/Docs/Java/Tricks%20of%20the%20Java%20Programming%20Gurus/ch12.htm // Gradient.java // Imports import java.applet.Applet; import java.awt.; import java.awt.image.; public class Gradient extends Applet { final int colors = 32; final int width = 200; final int height = 200; Image img; public void init() { // Create the color map byte[] rbmap = new byte[colors]; byte[] gmap = new byte[colors]; for (int i = 0; i < colors; i++) gmap[i] = (byte)((i * 255) / (colors - 1)); // Create the color model int bits = (int)Math.ceil(Math.log(colors) / Math.log(2)); IndexColorModel model = new IndexColorModel(bits, colors, rbmap, gmap, rbmap); // Create the pixels int pixels[] = new int[width * height]; int index = 0; for (int y = 0; y < height; y++) for (int x = 0; x < width; x++) pixels[index++] = (x * colors) / width; // Create the image img = createImage(new MemoryImageSource(width, height, model, pixels, 0, width)); } public void paint(Graphics g) { g.drawImage(img, 0, 0, this); } } It worked great but I tried to load a custom image jpeg mapped on my own colormap but it didnt work right. I saw only a bunch of green and blue pixels drawn on a white background. My custom color map method here: public void inintByteArrays() { double[][] c = // basic color map { { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.5625 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6250 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.7500 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.8125 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.8750 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.9375 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.0625, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.1250, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.1875, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.2500, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.3125, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.3750, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.4375, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.5000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.5625, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.6250, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.6875, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.7500, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.8125, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.8750, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.9375, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 1.0000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0625, 1.0000, 0.9375 }, { 0.1250, 1.0000, 0.8750 }, { 0.1875, 1.0000, 0.8125 }, { 0.2500, 1.0000, 0.7500 }, { 0.3125, 1.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.3750, 1.0000, 0.6250 }, { 0.4375, 1.0000, 0.5625 }, { 0.5000, 1.0000, 0.5000 }, { 0.5625, 1.0000, 0.4375 }, { 0.6250, 1.0000, 0.3750 }, { 0.6875, 1.0000, 0.3125 }, { 0.7500, 1.0000, 0.2500 }, { 0.8125, 1.0000, 0.1875 }, { 0.8750, 1.0000, 0.1250 }, { 0.9375, 1.0000, 0.0625 }, { 1.0000, 1.0000, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.9375, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.8750, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.8125, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.7500, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.6875, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.6250, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.5625, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.5000, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.4375, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.3750, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.3125, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.2500, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.1875, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.1250, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.0625, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.9375, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.8750, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.8125, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.7500, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.6875, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.6250, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.5625, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.5000, 0.0000, 0.0000 } }; for (int i = 0; i < c.length; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < c[i].length; j++) { if (j == 0) r[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); if (j == 1) g[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); if (j == 2) b[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); } } My question is how I can use my colormap for any image I want to load and map in the right way. Thank you very much! Greetings, protein1.

The reason for that is that I need to have individual popup tooltips on mouse-over each table row. Many Thanks in advance for any kind of help or suggestions!

  • elisp: posn-at-point returns nil after goto-char. How to update the display before posn-at-point?

    - by Cheeso
    In emacs lisp, posn-at-point is documented as: posn-at-point is a built-in function in C source code. (posn-at-point &optional POS WINDOW) . Return position information for buffer POS in WINDOW. POS defaults to point in WINDOW; WINDOW defaults to the selected window. . Return nil if position is not visible in window. Otherwise, the return value is similar to that returned by event-start for a mouse click at the upper left corner of the glyph corresponding to the given buffer position: (WINDOW AREA-OR-POS (X . Y) TIMESTAMP OBJECT POS (COL . ROW) IMAGE (DX . DY) (WIDTH . HEIGHT)) The posn- functions access elements of such lists. ok, now I've got a function that looks something like this: (defun my-move-and-popup-menu () "move the point, then pop up a menu." (goto-char xxxx) (setq p (posn-at-point)) (my-popup-menu p ...) ) Basically, move the point, then retrieve the screen position at that point, and then popup a menu at that screen position. But I am finding that posn-at-point returns non-nil, only if the xxxx character position (the after position) is visible in the window, before the call to goto-char. It seems that the position is not actually updated until exit from the function. If goto-char goes a long way, more than one screenful, then the retrieved position is always nil, and my code doesn't know where to popup the menu. The reason I suggest that the position is not actually updated until exit from the function - when the menu successfully pops up, the cursor is clearly visible in its previous location while the popup menu is being displayed. When I dismiss the menu, the cursor moves to where I expected it to move, after the goto-char call. How can I get the position to be really updated, between goto-char and posn-at-point, so that posn-at-point will not return nil? In a Windows Forms application I would call Form.Update() or something similar to update the display in the middle of an event handler. What's the emacs version of that?

  • Property trigger in XAML for IsMouseOver fails to set Border.Background

    - by Mal Ross
    I'm currently trying to create a ControlTemplate for the Button class in WPF, replacing the usual visual tree with something that makes the button look similar to the little (X) close icon on Google Chrome's tabs. I decided to use a Path object in XAML to achieve the effect. Using a property trigger, the control responds to a change in the IsMouseOver property by setting the icon's red background. Here's the XAML from a test app: <Window x:Class="Widgets.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300"> <Window.Resources> <Style x:Key="borderStyle" TargetType="Border"> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Background"> <Setter.Value> <SolidColorBrush Color="#CC0000"/> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> <ControlTemplate x:Key="closeButtonTemplate" TargetType="Button"> <Border Width="12" Height="12" CornerRadius="6" BorderBrush="#AAAAAA" Background="Transparent" Style="{StaticResource borderStyle}" ToolTip="Close"> <Viewbox Margin="2.75"> <Path Data="M 0,0 L 10,10 M 0,10 L 10,0" Stroke="{Binding BorderBrush, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType=Border, AncestorLevel=1}}" StrokeThickness="1.8"/> </Viewbox> </Border> </ControlTemplate> </Window.Resources> <Grid Background="White"> <Button Template="{StaticResource closeButtonTemplate}"/> </Grid> </Window> Note that the circular background is always there - it's just transparent when the mouse isn't over it. The problem with this is that the trigger just isn't working. Nothing changes in the button's appearance. However, if I remove the Background="Transparent" value from the Border object in the ControlTemplate, the trigger does work (albeit only when over the 'X'). I really can't explain this. Setters for any other properties placed in the borderStyle resource work fine, but the Background setter fails as soon as the default background is specified in the ControlTemplate. Any ideas why it's happening and how I can fix it? I know I could easily replace this code with, for example, a .PNG-based image, but I want to understand why the current implementation isn't working. Thanks! :)

  • How dangerous is e.preventDefault();, and can it be replaced by keydown/mousedown tracking?

    - by yc
    I'm working on a tracking script for a fairly sophisticated CRM for tracking form actions in Google Analytics. I'm trying to balance the desire to track form actions accurately with the need to never prevent a form from not working. Now, I know that doing something like this doesn't work. $('form').submit(function(){ _gaq.push('_trackEvent', 'Form', 'Submit', $(this).attr('action')) }); The DOM unloads before this has a chance to process. So, a lot of sample code recommends something like this: $('form').submit(function(e){ e.preventDefault(); var form = this; _gaq.push('_trackEvent', 'Form', 'Submit', $(this).attr('action')); //...do some other tracking stuff... setTimeout(function(){ form.submit(); }, 400); }); This is reliable in most cases, but it makes me nervous. What if something happens between e.preventDefault();and when I get around to triggering the DOM based submit? I've totally broken the form. I've been poking around some other analytics implementations, and I've noticed something like this: $('form').mousedown(function(){ _gaq.push('_trackEvent', 'Form', 'Submit', $(this).attr('action')); }); $('form').keydown(function(e){ if(e.which===13) //if the keydown is the enter key _gaq.push('_trackEvent', 'Form', 'Submit', $(this).attr('action')); }); Basically, instead of interrupting the form submit, preempting it by assuming that if someone is mousing down or keying down on Enter, than that form is submitted. Obviously, this will result in a certain amount of false positives, but it completely eliminates use of e.preventDefault();, which in my mind eliminates the risk that I might ever prevent a form from successfully submitting. So, my question: Is it possible to take the standard form tracking snippet and prevent it from ever fully preventing the form from submitting? Is the mousedown/keydown alternative viable? Are there any submission cases it may miss? Specifically, are there other ways to end up submitting besides the mouse and the keyboard enter? And will the browser always have time to process javascript before beginning to unload the page?

  • OCR anything with OneNote 2007 and 2010

    - by Matthew Guay
    Quality OCR software can often be very expensive, but you may have one already installed on your computer that you didn’t know about.  Here’s how you can use OneNote to OCR anything on your computer. OneNote is one of the overlooked gems in recent versions of Microsoft Office.  OneNote makes it simple to take notes and keep track of everything with integrated search, and offers more features than its popular competitor Evernote.  One way it is better is its high quality optical character recognition (OCR) engine.  One of Evernote’s most popular features is that you can search for anything, including text in an image, and you can easily find it.  OneNote takes this further, and instantly OCRs any text in images you add.  Then, you can use this text easily and copy it from the image.  Let’s see how this works and how you can use OneNote as the ultimate OCR. Please Note: This feature is available in OneNote 2007 and 2010.  OneNote 2007 is included with Office 2007 Home and Student, Enterprise, and Ultimate, while OneNote 2010 is included with all edition of Office 2010 except for Starter edition. OCR anything First, let’s add something to OCR into OneNote.  There are many different ways you can add items to OCR into OneNote.  Open a blank page or one you want to insert something into, and then follow these steps to add what you want into OneNote. Picture Simply drag-and-drop a picture with text into a notebook… You can insert a picture directly from OneNote as well.  In OneNote 2010, select the Insert tab, and then choose Picture. In OneNote 2007, select the Insert menu, select Picture, and then choose From File.   Screen Clipping There are many times we’d like to copy text from something we see onscreen, but there is no direct way to copy text from that thing.  For instance, you cannot copy text from the title-bar of a window, or from a flash-based online presentation.  For these cases, the Screen Clipping option is very useful.  To add a clip of anything onscreen in OneNote 2010, select the Insert tab in the ribbon and click Screen Clipping. In OneNote 2007, either click the Clip button on the toolbar or select the Insert menu and choose Screen Clipping.   Alternately, you can take a screen clipping by pressing the windows key + S. When you click Screen Clipping, OneNote will minimize, your desktop will fade lighter, and your mouse pointer will change to a plus sign.  Now, click and drag over anything you want to add to OneNote.  Here we’re selecting the title of this article. The section you selected will now show up in your OneNote notebook, complete with the date and time the clip was made. Insert a file You’re not limited to pictures; OneNote can even OCR anything in most files on your computer.  You can add files directly in OneNote 2010 by selecting File Printout in the Insert tab. In OneNote 2007, select the Insert menu and choose Files as Printout. Choose the file you want to add to OneNote in the dialog. Select Insert, and OneNote will pause momentarily as it processes the file. Now your file will show up in OneNote as a printout with a link to the original file above it. You can also send any file directly to OneNote via the OneNote virtual printer.  If you have a file open, such as a PDF, that you’d like to OCR, simply open the print dialog in that program and select the “Send to OneNote” printer. Or, if you have a scanner, you can scan documents directly into OneNote by clicking Scanner Printout in the Insert tab in OneNote 2010. In OneNote 2003, to add a scanned document select the Insert menu, select Picture, and then choose From Scanner or Camera. OCR the image, file, or screenshot you put in OneNote Now that you’ve got your stuff into OneNote, let’s put it to work.  OneNote automatically did an OCR scan on anything you inserted into OneNote.  You can check to make sure by right-clicking on any picture, screenshot, or file you inserted.  Select “Make Text in Image Searchable” and then make sure the correct language is selected. Now, you can copy text from the Picture.  Simply right-click on the picture, and select “Copy Text from Picture”. And here’s the text that OneNote found in this picture: OCR anything with OneNote 2007 and 2010 - Windows Live Writer Not bad, huh?  Now you can paste the text from the picture into a document or anywhere you need to use the text. If you are instead copying text from a printout, it may give you the option to copy text from this page or all pages of the printout.   This works the exact same in OneNote 2007. In OneNote 2010, you can also edit the text OneNote has saved in the image from the OCR.  This way, if OneNote read something incorrectly you can change it so you can still find it when you use search in OneNote.  Additionally, you can copy only a specific portion of the text from the edit box, so it can be useful just for general copying as well.  To do this, right-click on the item and select “Edit Alt Text”. Here is the window to edit alternate text.  If you want to copy only a portion of the text, simply select it and press Ctrl+C to copy that portion. Searching OneNote’s OCR engine is very useful for finding specific pictures you have saved in OneNote.  Simply enter your search query in the search box on top right, and OneNote will automatically find all instances of that term in all of your notebooks.  Notice how it highlights the search term even in the image! This works the same in OneNote 2007.  Notice how it highlighted “How-to” in a shot of the header image in our favorite website. In Windows Vista and 7, you can even search for things OneNote OCRed from the Start Menu search.  Here the start menu search found the words “Windows Live Writer” in our OCR Test notebook in OneNote where we inserted the screen clip above. Conclusion OneNote is a very useful OCR tool, and can help you capture text from just about anything.  Plus, since you can easily search everything you have stored in OneNote, you can quickly find anything you insert anytime.  OneNote is one of the least-used Office tools, but we have found it very useful and hope you do too. • Our Look at Opera 10.50 Web Browser

    - by Asian Angel
    Everyone has been talking about the newest version of Opera recently but perhaps you have not looked at it too closely yet. Today we will take a look at 10.50 and let you see what this “new browser” is all about. The New Engines Carakan JavaScript Engine: Runs web applications up to 7 times faster than its predecessor Futhark Vega Graphics Library: Enables super fast and smooth graphics on everything from tab switching to webpage animation Presto 2.5: Provides support for HTML5, CSS2.1 and the latest CSS3 standards A Look at the Features Available If you have installed or used older versions of Opera before then the default look after a clean install will probably seem rather different. The main differences in appearance are mainly located within the “glass border” areas of the browser. The “Speed Dial” setup looks and works just as well as in previous versions. You can set a favorite wallpaper or image as your background and choose the number of “dials” using the “Configure Speed Dial Command”. One of the “standout” differences is the “O Button”. All of the menus have been condensed into this single access point but it only takes a few moments to find what you are looking for. If you have used the style before in earlier versions of Opera some of the items have been moved around. For those who prefer the “Menu Bar” that can be easily restored using the “Show Menu Bar Command”. If desired you can actually “extend” the “Tab Bar” downwards to display thumbnails of your open tabs. Just use your mouse to grab the bottom of the “Tab Bar” and adjust it to suit your personal needs. The only problem with this feature is that it will quickly use up a good sized portion of your available UI and browser window space. The “Password Manager” is ready to access when needed…the background for the button will turn a shiny metallic blue when you open a webpage that you have “Login Information” saved for. One of the new features is a small “Recycle Bin Button” in the upper right corner. Clicking on this will display a list of recently closed tabs letting you have easy access to any tabs that you may have accidentally closed. This is definitely a great feature to have as an easy access button. For those who were used to how the “Zoom Feature” looked before it has a new “look” to it. Instead of the pop-up menu-type listing of “view sizes” present before you now have a slider button that you can use to adjust the zooming level. For our default setup here the “Sidebar Panels” available were: “Bookmarks, Widgets, Unite, Notes, Downloads, History, & Panels”. Additional panels such as “Links, Windows, Search, Info, etc.” are available if you want and/or need them (accessible using the “Panels Plus Sign Button”). The “Opera Link Button” makes it easy for you to synchronize your “Speed Dial, Bookmarks, Personal Bar, Custom Searches, History & Notes”. Note: “Opera Link” requires an account and can be signed up for using the link provided below. Want to share files with your family and friends? “Unite” allows you to do that and more. With “Unite” you can: “Stream Music, Show Photo Galleries, Share Files and/or Folders, & host webpages directly from your browser”. We have a more in-depth look at “Unite” in our article here. Note: Use of “Unite” requires an Opera account. Got a slow internet connection? “Opera Turbo” can help with that by running the web traffic through their “compression servers” to speed up your web browsing. Keep in mind that “Opera Turbo” will not engage if you are accessing a secure website (i.e. your bank’s website) thus preserving your security. Note: “Opera Turbo” can be set up to automatically detect slow internet connections (i.e. crowded Wi-Fi in a cafe). Opera has a built-in “Private Browsing Mode” now for those who prefer anonymous browsing and want to keep the “history records clean” on their computer. To access it go to “Tabs and windows” and select “New private tab” or “New private window” as desired. When you open your new “Private Tab or Window” you will see the following message with details on how Opera will handle browsing information and a large “door hanger symbol”. Notice that the one tab is locked into “Private Browsing Mode” while the others are still working in “Regular Browsing Mode”. Very nice! A miniature version of the “door hanger symbol” will be present on any tab that is locked into “Private Browsing Mode”. If you are using Windows 7 then you will love how things look from your “Taskbar”. Here you can see four very nice looking thumbnails for the tabs that we had open. All that you have to do is click on the desired thumbnail… The “Context Menu” looks just as lovely as the thumbnails and definitely has some terrific functionality built into it. Add Enhanced Aero Capability If you love “Aero” and want more for your new Opera install then we have the perfect theme for you. The theme’s name is Z1-AV69 and once you have downloaded it you will need to place it in the “Skins Subfolder” in Opera’s “Program Files Folder”. Note: For our example we used version 1.10 but version 2.00 is now available (link provided below). Once you have restarted Opera, go to the “O Menu” and select “Appearance”. When the “Appearance Window” opens click on “Z1-Glass Skin” and then click “OK”. All of a sudden you will have more “Aero Goodness” to enjoy. Compare this screenshot with the one at the top of this article…the only part that is not transparent now is the browser window area itself. Want even more “Aero Goodness”? Right click on the “Tab Bar” and set “Tab Bar Placement” to “Left”. Note: You can achieve the same effect by setting the “Tab Bar Placement” to “Right”. With the “Speed Dial” visible you will be able to see your wallpaper with ease. While this is obviously not for everyone it does make for a great visual trick. Portable Versions Perhaps you need this wonderful new version of Opera to go with you wherever you do during the day. Not a problem…just visit the Opera USB website to choose a version that works best for you. You can select from “Zip or Exe” setup files and if needed update an older portable version using a “Zipped Update Files Package”. If you are updating an older version keep in mind that you will need to delete the old “OperaUSB.exe. File” due to changes with the new setup files. During our tests updating older portable versions went well for the most part but we did experience a few “odd UI quirks” here and there…so we recommend setting up a clean install if possible. Conclusion The new 10.50 release is a pleasure to use and is a recommended install for your system. Whether you are considering trying Opera for the first time or have been using it for a bit we think that you will pleased with everything that the 10.50 release has to offer. • Using a WPF ListView as a DataGrid

    - by psheriff
    Many people like to view data in a grid format of rows and columns. WPF did not come with a data grid control that automatically creates rows and columns for you based on the object you pass it. However, the WPF Toolkit can be downloaded from CodePlex.com that does contain a DataGrid control. This DataGrid gives you the ability to pass it a DataTable or a Collection class and it will automatically figure out the columns or properties and create all the columns for you and display the data.The DataGrid control also supports editing and many other features that you might not always need. This means that the DataGrid does take a little more time to render the data. If you want to just display data (see Figure 1) in a grid format, then a ListView works quite well for this task. Of course, you will need to create the columns for the ListView, but with just a little generic code, you can create the columns on the fly just like the WPF Toolkit’s DataGrid. Figure 1: A List of Data using a ListView A Simple ListView ControlThe XAML below is what you would use to create the ListView shown in Figure 1. However, the problem with using XAML is you have to pre-define the columns. You cannot re-use this ListView except for “Product” data. <ListView x:Name="lstData"          ItemsSource="{Binding}">  <ListView.View>    <GridView>      <GridViewColumn Header="Product ID"                      Width="Auto"               DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Path=ProductId}" />      <GridViewColumn Header="Product Name"                      Width="Auto"               DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Path=ProductName}" />      <GridViewColumn Header="Price"                      Width="Auto"               DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Path=Price}" />    </GridView>  </ListView.View></ListView> So, instead of creating the GridViewColumn’s in XAML, let’s learn to create them in code to create any amount of columns in a ListView. Create GridViewColumn’s From Data TableTo display multiple columns in a ListView control you need to set its View property to a GridView collection object. You add GridViewColumn objects to the GridView collection and assign the GridView to the View property. Each GridViewColumn object needs to be bound to a column or property name of the object that the ListView will be bound to. An ADO.NET DataTable object contains a collection of columns, and these columns have a ColumnName property which you use to bind to the GridViewColumn objects. Listing 1 shows a sample of reading and XML file into a DataSet object. After reading the data a GridView object is created. You can then loop through the DataTable columns collection and create a GridViewColumn object for each column in the DataTable. Notice the DisplayMemberBinding property is set to a new Binding to the ColumnName in the DataTable. C#private void FirstSample(){  // Read the data  DataSet ds = new DataSet();  ds.ReadXml(GetCurrentDirectory() + @"\Xml\Product.xml");    // Create the GridView  GridView gv = new GridView();   // Create the GridView Columns  foreach (DataColumn item in ds.Tables[0].Columns)  {    GridViewColumn gvc = new GridViewColumn();    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = new Binding(item.ColumnName);    gvc.Header = item.ColumnName;    gvc.Width = Double.NaN;    gv.Columns.Add(gvc);  }   // Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = gv;  // Display the Data  lstData.DataContext = ds.Tables[0];} VB.NETPrivate Sub FirstSample()  ' Read the data  Dim ds As New DataSet()  ds.ReadXml(GetCurrentDirectory() & "\Xml\Product.xml")   ' Create the GridView  Dim gv As New GridView()   ' Create the GridView Columns  For Each item As DataColumn In ds.Tables(0).Columns    Dim gvc As New GridViewColumn()    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = New Binding(item.ColumnName)    gvc.Header = item.ColumnName    gvc.Width = [Double].NaN    gv.Columns.Add(gvc)  Next   ' Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = gv  ' Display the Data  lstData.DataContext = ds.Tables(0)End SubListing 1: Loop through the DataTable columns collection to create GridViewColumn objects A Generic Method for Creating a GridViewInstead of having to write the code shown in Listing 1 for each ListView you wish to create, you can create a generic method that given any DataTable will return a GridView column collection. Listing 2 shows how you can simplify the code in Listing 1 by setting up a class called WPFListViewCommon and create a method called CreateGridViewColumns that returns your GridView. C#private void DataTableSample(){  // Read the data  DataSet ds = new DataSet();  ds.ReadXml(GetCurrentDirectory() + @"\Xml\Product.xml");   // Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View =      WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns(ds.Tables[0]);  lstData.DataContext = ds.Tables[0];} VB.NETPrivate Sub DataTableSample()  ' Read the data  Dim ds As New DataSet()  ds.ReadXml(GetCurrentDirectory() & "\Xml\Product.xml")   ' Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = _      WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns(ds.Tables(0))  lstData.DataContext = ds.Tables(0)End SubListing 2: Call a generic method to create GridViewColumns. The CreateGridViewColumns MethodThe CreateGridViewColumns method will take a DataTable as a parameter and create a GridView object with a GridViewColumn object in its collection for each column in your DataTable. C#public static GridView CreateGridViewColumns(DataTable dt){  // Create the GridView  GridView gv = new GridView();  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = true;   // Create the GridView Columns  foreach (DataColumn item in dt.Columns)  {    GridViewColumn gvc = new GridViewColumn();    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = new Binding(item.ColumnName);    gvc.Header = item.ColumnName;    gvc.Width = Double.NaN;    gv.Columns.Add(gvc);  }   return gv;} VB.NETPublic Shared Function CreateGridViewColumns _  (ByVal dt As DataTable) As GridView  ' Create the GridView  Dim gv As New GridView()  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = True   ' Create the GridView Columns  For Each item As DataColumn In dt.Columns    Dim gvc As New GridViewColumn()    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = New Binding(item.ColumnName)    gvc.Header = item.ColumnName    gvc.Width = [Double].NaN    gv.Columns.Add(gvc)  Next   Return gvEnd FunctionListing 3: The CreateGridViewColumns method takes a DataTable and creates GridViewColumn objects in a GridView. By separating this method out into a class you can call this method anytime you want to create a ListView with a collection of columns from a DataTable. SummaryIn this blog you learned how to create a ListView that acts like a DataGrid. You are able to use a DataTable as both the source of the data, and for creating the columns for the ListView. In the next blog entry you will learn how to use the same technique, but for Collection classes. NOTE: You can download the complete sample code (in both VB and C#) at my website. http://www.pdsa.com/downloads. Choose Tips & Tricks, then "WPF ListView as a DataGrid" from the drop-down.
