• Edit, select value from UITableView on the iPhone

  I have a UITableView with a list of names, representing server configurations. I want the user to be able to select a server configuration, add a server config, edit a server config, or just cancel out of the view and return to the main view. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to achieve all of that functionality in this view. To select, the user should be able to just tap the server config name and a check will appear next to the name then the user is taken back to the main view automatically (or use a save button instead?). To edit the server config, I would also like the user to be able to tap the server config name and be taken to a detail screen where changes can be made. How can I accomplish both since I want both to be done by tapping the server name (row)? Right now the cancel button seems out of place since the screen is accessed via a UINavigationController. Any suggestions?

• Visual Studio ALM MVP of the Year 2011

  For some reason this year some of my peers decided to vote for me as a contender for Visual Studio ALM MVP of the year. I am not sure what I did to deserve this, but a number of people have commented that I have a rather useful blog. I feel wholly unworthy to join the ranks of previous winners: Ed Blankenship (2010) Martin Woodward (2009) Thank you to everyone who voted regardless of who you voted for. If there was a prize for the best group of MVP’s then the Visual Studio ALM MVP would be a clear winner, as would the product group of product groups that is Visual Studio ALM Group. To use a phrase that I have learned since moving to Seattle and probably use too much: you guys are all just awesome. I have tried my best in the last year to document not only every problem that I have had with Team Foundation Server (TFS), but also to document as many of the things I am doing as possible. I have taken some of Adam Cogan’s rules to heart and when a customer asks me a question I always blog the answer and send them a link. This allows both my blog and my understanding of TFS to grow while creating a useful bank of content. The idea is that if one customer asks, all benefit. I try, when writing for my blog, to capture both the essence and the context for a problem being solved. This allows more people to benefit as they do not need to understand the specifics of an environment to gain value. I have a number of goals for this year that I think will help increase value in the community: persuade my new colleagues at Northwest Cadence to do more blogging (Steve, Jeff, Shad and Rennie) Rangers Project – TFS Iteration Automation with Willy-Peter Schaub, Bill Essary, Martin Hinshelwood, Mike Fourie, Jeff Bramwell and Brian Blackman Write a book on the Team Foundation Server API with Willy-Peter Schaub, Mike Fourie and Jeff Bramwell write more useful blog posts I do not think that these things are beyond the realms of do-ability, but we will see…

• Silverlight DataGrid Refresh Between Xaml Files

  Hello, I have a Page.xaml file and a AddNewProject.xaml. In the Page.xaml file I have a ProjectDetailsDataGrid and a button to add a new Project. When I click on the Add New Project button the AddNewProject.xaml file becomes visible for the user to enter new project information. I am having a problem trying to refresh the ProjectDetailsDataGrid (on the Page.xaml page) to display the new info. entered from the AddNewProject.xaml page. Is there anyway to accomplish refreshing a datagrid between two seperate xaml files? Thank you for your help.

• Asp.net fileupload control postback problems

  using ASP.net, vs2008 C#. Im using a FileUpload control on a webform. The uploading of a file (ie PDF dcouments) to a server directory works ok. I have on the webform a "preview" button that the user can use to preview the PDF file after they have selected it via the Fileupload browse feature. I do this by if (this.FileUpload1.HasFile) { localURL = FileUpload1.PostedFile.FileName; // use this to preview file. Other methods are restricted by local security requirements Process.Start(localURL); } My problems is that after the button click Postback occurs the location of the selected file disappears from the textbox part of the Fileupload control. How can i keep this info there, so the user does not have to browse again and instead can just click upload to upload the file. Any help appreciated thanks

  This is my problem, I have one textbox, one button and one label. Everything is inside an updatepanel. Let's say I want to test if a valid html-tag is entered in the textbox when I press the button. In the code-behind I have a method for that. Everythings works just fine, except when I actually enter a html-tag in my textbox. If I test < html, it works. But not if I test . So my question is, doesn't the updatepanel accept html-tags as parameters? Because my breakpoint for the button_click doesn't triggers. Sorry for my bad english.. :)

• ASP.NET website not working properly in mobile

  I have created a simple app with a page having a server side form, three fields and a button that submits and performs two operations - 1) adds the form fields to the database table 2) sends an email. Now everything works fine on the web browser on my machine but when I access the app through my mobile, the page does not seem to work. the UI and all are set but the button click functionality doesnt seem to be working and also the label which is set after a successful submit is already visible and showing the "thank you" message. Am i doing something wrong here? I have checked the app on Nokia Smartphone browser, android phone, and iphone simulator.

  Anyone who says that the centuries old game of Chess cannot be improved upon has obviously never played with a glowing chess board. Today we take a look at a cheap glass chess set modded to glow from within. Instructables user Tetranitrate had a glass chess set he scored on-the-cheap and had always wanted to illuminate it in some way. He ruled out illuminating the board itself (no good way to keep track of the piece colors) and putting a battery in each piece (too big of a pain, over complicates the design). His final solution, the one seen in the photo here, was to build a wood and copper board, run a low voltage across the surface of the chess board, and affix a conductive copper ring to the bottom of each chess piece to power the LED embedded inside. In this manner the pieces would glow on the board and then go dark as soon as they were removed from play.   I have a ListView that is sandwiched between two buttons.   Does anyone know how I can add text into the toolbar? I would like to add some text to one of the buttons just like how the button for "Source" has the small icon, but also has the word "Source" beside it to describe what that button does. Basically none of my test users knows that the little mountain icon is used insert an image. Because of this, I would like to either replace that icon with the words "upload image" or I'd like to keep that little mountain icon, and have the words "upload image" beside it, to help people understand that's the icon for images.

  I am trying to get 10 mp3 files in the resources folder and play them when a button is pressed. I have entered name of the mp3 files in a NSMutableArray and read each one after the button is pressed. The problem is that pathForResource: is not working (returns nil).   I'm trying to declutter the a particular page (e-commerce article edition) It's a big form with many informational sections. I used jQuery tabs to separate the form in three. The first tab is the one who has the submit button. Let's say I go to tab2 and change something, then go to tab1 to make some final edits and submit, the contents of tab2 doesn't get submited because it's hidden and the php script doesn't get the data from any other tab than tab1 I don't want to save until the user actually hits on the submit button. Is there a way to change this behaviour of jquery tabs?

  I'm new to Watir and I've having a little trouble getting logged in in my tests. I use authlogic as my authentication method of choice. When a User registers, they are sent an email with a confirmation link. Clicking this link confirms their account and they can then login. The issue I'm having is how do I confirm the User when using Watir? I have so far: Given /I sign up/ do BROWSER.goto("http://localhost:3000/register") BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_email").set("[email protected]") BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_name").set("Foo Bar) BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_password").set("foo bar") BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_password_confirmation").set("foo bar") BROWSER.button(:id, "user_submit").click end Given /I am logged in via Watir/ do BROWSER.goto("http://localhost:3000/login") BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_session_email").set("[email protected]) BROWSER.text_field(:id, "user_session_password").set("foo bar") BROWSER.button(:id, "user_session_submit").click end This correctly populates the fields and the User is saved. • Receiving an MVP Award and Credibility

  The post titled, The Problem with MVPs, by Steve Barbour was interesting because it makes you think about the thousands of MVPs around the world and what their value really is. Having been the recipient of multiple MVP awards, it’s an opportunity to reflect and judge my own performance. This is not a dangerous thing to do, but quite the opposite. If a person believes in self improvement, then critical analysis is an important part of that process. A lot of MVPs will tell you that they would be doing the same thing, regardless of whether they were an MVP or not; helping others in the community, which is also where I prefer to hang my hat. I’ve never defined myself as an expert and never will; this determination is left to others. In fact, let me just come out and say it, “I don’t know everything”. Shocked? Sometimes the gap between expectations and reality extends beyond a reasonable measure. Being labeled as a technical expert feels good for one's self esteem and is certainly a useful motivational technique. A problem can emerge though when an individual believes, too much, in what they are told. The problem is not with a pat on the back, but with a person does with the positive reinforcement. Is narcissism too strong a word? How often have you been in a public forum reading a demeaning response to a question that only serves in attempt to raise the stature of the person providing the response? Such behavior compromises one’s credibility, raises questions about validity of the MVP award, and is limited in community value. I’m currently under consideration for another MVP award on April 1st. If it happens, it will be good. Otherwise, I’ll keep writing articles, coding open source software, and whatever else I enjoy doing; with the best reward being that people find value in what I do.
