• Improve heavy work in a loop in multithreading

• Async networking + threading problem

  I kick off a network request, assuming no login credentials are required to talk to the destination server. If they are required, then I get an authentication challenge, at which point I display a view requesting said credentials from the user. When they are supplied, I restart the network request, using those credentials. That's all fine and dandy, as long as I only do one request at a time. But I'm not, typically. When both requests are kicked off, I get the first challenge, and present the prompt (using -presentModalViewController:). Then the 2nd challenge comes in. And I crash when it tries to display the 2nd prompt. I have the bulk of this wrapped in an @synchronized() block, but this has no effect because these delegate methods are all being called on the same (main) thread. The docs say the delegate methods are called on the same thread in which the connection was started. OK, no problem; I'll just write a method that I run on a background thread using -performSelectorInBackground: NSURLConnection *connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:self startImmediately:NO]; [connections addObject:connection]; [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(startConnection:) withObject:connection]; [connection release]; - (void)startConnection:(NSURLConnection *)connection { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [NSAutoreleasePool new]; [connection scheduleInRunLoop:[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] forMode:NSDefaultRunLoopMode]; [connection start]; [pool drain]; } which should put every network request, and its callbacks, on its own thread, and then my @synchronized() blocks will take effect. The docs for -initWithRequest:... state "Messages to the delegate will be sent on the thread that calls this method. By default, for the connection to work correctly the calling thread’s run loop must be operating in the default run loop mode." Ok, I'm doing that. They also state "If you pass NO [for startImmediately], you must schedule the connection in a run loop before starting it." OK, I'm doing that, too. Furthermore, the docs for NSRunLoop state "Each NSThread object, including the application’s main thread, has an NSRunLoop object automatically created for it as needed. If you need to access the current thread’s run loop, you do so with the class method currentRunLoop." I'm assuming this applies to the background thread created by the call -performSelectorInBackground... (which does appear to be the case, when I execute 'po [NSClassFromString(@"NSRunLoop") currentRunLoop]' in the -startConnection: method). The -startConnection: method is indeed being called. But after kicking off the connection, I now never get any callbacks on it. None of the -connectionDid… delegate methods. (I even tried explicitly starting the thread's run loop, but that made no difference; I've used threads like this before, and I've never had to start the run loop manually before--but I'm now grasping at straws...) I think I've come up with a workaround such that I only handle one request at a time, but it's kludgy and I'd like to do this the Right Way. But, what am I missing here? Thanks! randy

  Sorry for the confusion I posted the Worng Logcat info. I updated the question. I want to click Start to start a thread then when enter is clicked i want the thad to continue and get the message and handle the message in the thread then output it to the main thread and update the text view. How would i start a thread to wait for enter to be pressed and get the bundle for the Handler? • What's the best-practice way to update an Adapter's underlying data?

  I'm running into an IllegalStateException updating an underlying List to an Adapter (might be an ArrayAdapter or an extension of BaseAdapter, I don't remember). I do not have or remember the text of the exception at the moment, but it says something to the effect of the List's content changing without the Adapter having been notified of the change. This List /may/ be updated from another thread other than the UI thread (main). After I update this list (adding an item), I call notifyDataSetChanged. The issue seems to be that the Adapter, or ListView attached to the Adapter attempts to update itself before this method is invoked. When this happens, the IllegalStateException is thrown. If I set the ListView's visibility to GONE before the update, then VISIBLE again, no error occurs. But this isn't always practical. I read somewhere that you cannot modify the underlying this from another thread--this would seem to limit an MVC pattern, as with this particular List, I want to add items from different threads. I assumed that as long as I called notifyDataSetChanged() I'd be safe--that the Adapter didn't revisit the underlying List until this method was invoked but this doesn't seem to be the case. I suppose what I'm asking is, can it be safe to update the underlying List from threads other than the UI? Additionally, if I want to modify the data within an Adapter, do I modify the underlying List or the Adapter itself (via its add(), etc. methods). Modifying the data through the Adapter seems wrong. I came across a thread on another site from someone who seems to be having a similar problem to mine: http://osdir.com/ml/Android-Developers/2010-04/msg01199.html (this is from where I grabbed the Visibility.GONE and .VISIBLE idea). To give you a better idea of my particular problem, I'll describe a bit of how my List, Adapter, etc. are set up. I've an object named Queue that contains a LinkedList. Queue extends Observable, and when things are added to its internal list through its methods, I call setChanged() and notifyListeners(). This Queue object can have items added or removed from any number of threads. I have a single "queue view" Activity that contains an Adapter. This Activity, in its onCreate() method, registers an Observer listener to my Queue object. In the Observer's update() method I call notifyDataSetChanged() on the Adapter. I added a lot of log output and determined that when this IllegalStateExcption occurs that my Observer callback was never invoked. So it's as if the Adapter noticed the List's change before the Observer had a chance to notify its Observers, and call my method to notify the Adapter that the contents had changed. So I suppose what I'm asking is, is this a good way to rig-up an Adapter? Is this a problem because I'm updating the Adapter's contents from a thread other than the UI thread? If this is the case, I may have a solution in mind (give the Queue object a Handler to the UI thread when it's created, and make all List modifications using that Handler, but this seems improper). I realize that this is a very open-ended post, but I'm a bit lost on this and would appreciate any comments on what I've written.

  My first real-world Python project is to write a simple framework (or re-use/adapt an existing one) which can wrap small python scripts (which are used to gather custom data for a monitoring tool) with a "container" to handle boilerplate tasks like: fetching a script's configuration from a file (and keeping that info up to date if the file changes and handle decryption of sensitive config data) running multiple instances of the same script in different threads instead of spinning up a new process for each one expose an API for caching expensive data and storing persistent state from one script invocation to the next Today, script authors must handle the issues above, which usually means that most script authors don't handle them correctly, causing bugs and performance problems. In addition to avoiding bugs, we want a solution which lowers the bar to create and maintain scripts, especially given that many script authors may not be trained programmers. Below are examples of the API I've been thinking of, and which I'm looking to get your feedback about. A scripter would need to build a single method which takes (as input) the configuration that the script needs to do its job, and either returns a python object or calls a method to stream back data in chunks. Optionally, a scripter could supply methods to handle startup and/or shutdown tasks. Or is there another preferred way to do this? when a callee needs to stream data back to its caller, is a method like context.log() (see above) appropriate, or should I be using yield instead? (yeild seems natural, but I worry it'd be over the head of most scripters) My approach requires scripts to define functions with predefined names (e.g. "run", "init", "shutdown"). Is this a good way to do it? If not, what other mechanism would be more natural? I'm passing the same config, context, cache parameters into every method. Would it be better to use a single "context" parameter instead? Would it be better to use global variables instead? Finally, are there existing libraries you'd recommend to make this kind of simple "script-running container" easier to write?

• Application stops on back button in new activity

  I have this application, that have a listView, and when I click in a item on listView, it opens a new activity. That works fine! But, if I open the new activity and than press the "back button" the application "Unfortunately, has stopped". Is there something I'm doing wrong? • Synchronous communication using NSOperationQueue

  I am new to Objective C programming. I have created two threads called add and display using the NSInvocationOperation and added it on to the NSOperationQueue. I make the display thread to run first and then run the add thread. The display thread after printing the "Welcome to display" has to wait for the results to print from the add method. So i have set the waitUntilFinished method. Both the Operations are on the same queue. If i use waitUntilFinished for operations on the same queue there may be a situation for deadlock to happen(from apples developer documentation). Is it so? To wait for particular time interval there is a method called waitUntilDate: But if i need to like this wait(min(100,dmax)); let dmax = 20; How to do i wait for these conditions? It would be much helpful if anyone can explain with an example. • android app working on simulator but not on phone

  i have this app that i developed and it works great on the simulator with no errors what so ever. but the moment i try to run the same on the phone for testing, the app crashes stating filenotfoundexception. it says the file /res/drawable/divider_horizontal.9.png is missing. but actually speaking, i have never referenced that file through my code. i believe its a system/os file that is unavailable. i have a custom list view, i guess its the divider there... could somebody please suggest what is wrong here. i believe this is a similar issue discussed here..but i am unable to make   I'm currently trying to set up an unattended installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) through preseeding. But whenever I try to create a custom partition scheme, the Debian installer (which Ubuntu is using) produces a faulty partition table.
