• Where do I find Nmake for Windows XP

  Regarding BioPerl installation in Windows XP, I have installed Active Perl in Windows XP, and by using Perl Package Manager I have installed the BioPerl Repositories too. But I am not able to run the BioPerl yet. While running the BioPerl program in emacs it is showing the following error: make -k 'make' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file I have tried to install Nmake for Windows but this error is showing. No webpage was found for the web address: http://download.microsoft.com/download/vc15/patch/1.52/w95/en-us/nmake15.exe How could this be resolved?

• Unable to install visual studio 2012 on windows 7

  I was attempting to install Visual Studio 2012 Express Version on windows 7, but got the following error. The error talks about some Interop Assem, which I believe is related to Microsoft Office. I tried to install the Interop Assem, but it seems that they cannot be installed for Starter Versions of the Microsoft Office. So, how do I go about installing Visual Studio 2012 on my Windows 7 machine, without full version of Microsoft Office installed, Or the error is related to something else. Update: I have tried to install the following Interop Assem but the installation terminates without any status.

• Error sysprepping Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial

  I am using the Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial to evaluate the latest version of Windows for a private school. The way I work is that I use sysprep to prepare an generalized image, then I clone it to the school's computers. When I follow the instructions and try sysprep on my installation of Windows 8 in VirtualBox, sysprep thinks briefly and gives me an error message: Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine. Once I acknowledge it, sysprep closes. I checked the Windows Event Log, and there's nothing there that I could see. I also followed some instructions to cure this problem, but nothing changed. The error remains. My best guess is that the 90-day trial prohibits the use of sysprep, but I can't be sure. It might also be my use of VirtualBox, or who-knows-what. Has anyone had success with this, or encountered the same issue on real hardware?

• Windows 8 on iSCSI with LIO target: thin provisioning

  I have installed Windows 8.1 on an iSCSI target. This target is provided by Linux LIO and is backed by a sparse file. One of the reasons I created such an installation was thin provisioning. In other words, when I free disk space on Windows, LIO should punch holes into the file, thus free storage space on the Linux server as well. I have checked my kernel's sources and the SCSI UNMAP command is really supported for file-backed targets. On the other hand, deleting files on Windows doesn't lower the amount of space taken by the backing file on Linux (checked with du). Actually, the backing file sometimes grows even more. Some sources on Google say Win8 should support UNMAP/DISCARD on iSCSI, but even in Wireshark I only see ordinary read and write commands when files are being deleted. Any way to fix or troubleshoot it?

• Apache resolves all URLs to default

  I am using Apache 2.2 on a Debian-based distro. For some reason, all URLs are directed to the default index. No error or anything. That means: example.domain.com goes to domain.com. "example" can be just anything. In the default Vhost file (/etc/apache2/sites-available/default) I've added: ServerName: www.domain.com But it still keeps that odd behaviour. Please let me know how to enable the common, default behaviour. I haven't changed anything by the way, this is since installation. Update: Following SvW's answer, I am looking for a way to force Apache not to accept any URL, only those specified as VirtualHosts.

• How can I fully automate the creation and configuration of a SharePoint virtual machine?

  I typically require multiple SharePoint virtual machines for development purposes. I currently manually build these every time I need one, either starting from a fresh OS install or using sysprep when working with SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. I currently use VMWare, but am open to VirtualBox or Hyper-V. I'd like to be able to go from zero to a working VM with SharePoint, SQL and Visual Studio all through script. Is this a feasible task? Or are there more practical methods which would start from a VM with a fresh installation of an OS, and then use more standard unattended installs. • Setting a mapped drive in Virtual hosts causes apache to not start

  I´m trying to set a virtual host on my windows 7 machine. The folder I want to point to is located on a centOS machine and the folder path is Z:\Websites\Online\MyClient\Site. But something strange happens when I set the document root like this: DocumentRoot "Z:\Websites\Online\MyClient\Site" Apache do not restarts after that. When I take a look at the log, there is an error pointing to that line, where I added the path to the folder: Syntax error on line 48 of C:/Program Files/Zend/Apache2/conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf: DocumentRoot must be a directory. There must be a way to make it work like this, by setting an Apache Installation on a machine and pointing it to a folder located on another computer, right? My hosts file is set like this: 172.17.10.1\Data\Websites\Online\MyClient\Site MyClient.local ANY HELP would be VERY appreciated.

  I installed XAMPP on Ubuntu, and its running without any of its files. Well, not really, but it sure seems that way. I followed the directions on the Apache Friends website to the letter. XAMPP works fine, it's sample apps run like a charm. But I have no idea how it is running. The installation should have created an otf folder, or a XAMPP folder, or an htdoc file according to the tutorials. But there is no trace of any of these files or folders anywhere in the file browser. Are there any linux utilities as good as the Windows Explorer that can find my missing files? I particularly need to find the var/www folder to put my .php files in.

  At my company, we're migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7. We've got 2 home made applications written in C# with the .NET framework 3.5. They use ClickOnce to be installed. We're in the test phase and the installation of these soft crashes on some Windows 7 machines and doesn't on others. The difference between these machines should be the configuration of the policies. The only error message we've got is this one: I tried to find some logs somewhere but there's nothing neither in the Event Viewer nor in the applications log (wich are poorly logged, then I'm not expecting miracle from this side :( ) These applications: work with FTP servers use WCF use old deprecated libraries (as I'm not at work, I'll edit this post when I'll have the info) use nHibernate 2 use LLBLGen use a deprecated Infragistics library export data into Excel files Did you encounter such an issue while migrating? Or do you have an idea where I should investigate on?

• Logitech SetPoint update seems to be hanging

  I've just gotten a new Logitech Wireless Wave Combo MK550 mouse and keyboard. I pulled it in, and have installed the software that came on the CD, which is SetPoint 6.15. After installing it, it said that it had an update, so I started the installation for that. Now it's at a point where it says, "Approximately 30 second remaining...". It has been that way for 30 minutes, not 30 seconds. So, what's going on? I'm installing this on a Windows 7 Home Premium system, 64-bit OS.

• Netbook won't boot after using EasyBCD

  I have an Asus T91MT netbook on which I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.10 installed (dual boot). After trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu is no longer able to boot, so I tried to uninstall Ubuntu completely and then reinstall it. Following these directions, I tried using EasyBCD to bypass the GRUB2 bootloader so that after uninstalling, it would automatically boot into Windows 7. However, after doing the "install BCD" step and restarting, I got the following message: Windows failed to start... File: \Boot\BCD; Status: 0xc0000098; Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry. I'm currently trying to create a USB stick of the Windows Installation disc but in the mean time, I can only boot from a Ubuntu USB stick. Is there anything I can do from within Ubuntu to fix this? Or does anyone have any other suggestions/solutions?

  I have a system where to the main server (homes, nfs, ntp, queue...) can log-in only root – all the other users use front-end host with NFS-mounted home directories (RW) and all other software directories (read-only). My problem is, that time to time, if root or normal user with sudo makes some administrative works on front-end some homes of normal users getting sticky bits (drwsr-sr-x). If it happens usually the user can't log-in (as long as permission for his home are not changed to drwxr-xr-x). The last time I saw it after compiling some new software (normal user configure;make) and installation from the same directory as root (su and make install or direct as normal user sudo make install). Can somebody explain me why it happens and what should I do to get rid of this problem? p.s. I'm using CentOS 5.7

  Hi all, I'm going to use the free (non gui) version of Hyper-V R2. In my new server I have 8 disks in total (for Hyper-V R2 installation and virtual machine). Atm I'm going to run a single virtual machine, with following tasks: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 File/Print SQL Server My question is ... with my 8 disks in the server, which disks should contain wich data? Should I install "Hyper-V R2" and VM's drive c on same physical disks? Should I use raid 1 or 5? With the above tasks, how would you structure the disks?   I have administrative access on our network, but I don't manage the installation of all servers or software. On some of our machines instances of SQL Server 2008 have been installed which I need to be able to access, but since my account hasn't been explicitly granted a login, I can't get into. Is there a way to get into the database without changing anyone's password (e.g. I could solve this by changing the password of the user who installed the instance, assuming they've set themselves up as admin, and then logging on as them, but I don't want to have to do this).

• Slow remote desktop connection to VPS

  When I use Windows 7's remote desktop connection to our company's VPS (Win Server 2008 32bit) I receive a very slow connection - most of the times it actually grinds down to a complete halt. This is in contrast to my team mates which have no problem remoting to the VPS. I'm using a brand new Dell Studio 1558 laptop with Intel Core i7 and 4GB RAM with a clean installation of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. Any suggestions for how to diagnose \ solve \ workaround the problem would be appreciated. UPDATES: I checked, and it seems the problem exists with all the computers connected to my home LAN. Once I take my laptop to the nearest coffee shop it works fine. What could be the problem with the LAN?

• php apache unknow 500 error

  I currently have an error with my apache/php installation on a centos system. I checked the log files in /var/log/httpd and in my logs directory as specified in my virtual host file, but they are not getting populated with errors. I've also set php to log errors, through the php.ini, to the /var/log/httpd/ but the error file is not getting created. When I setup the display_errors = On in the php.ini all I get is a blank screen. this is a git controlled project that is running off of an ubuntu server that works perfectly, so there is something missing from this server. My question is, is there any way I can get more info on the error that I am getting? I just need something that I can trace back. I am using a codeigniter framework, so for me to trace through the code will take days. Thanks!

• Can't boot into my Windows 7 64-bit Acer laptop

  Boot normally -- it hangs on "Starting Windows" animation forever. Boot safe mode -- it bluescreens. Boot with a recovery CD (or try Repair Installation directly without a CD) -- it hangs on the green loading bar forever. I dual-boot Ubuntu and can get into the Ubuntu partition fine so I don't think anything is necessarily wrong with the harddrive, but the Ubuntu partition is tiny and I rarely use it and can't access my Windows files anyway. Is there anything I can try that'll help repair whatever happened? I just want to run a checkdisk utility or something similar that'll repair whatever got botched. • How do you setup 64-bit PHP5 with APC?

  I followed this # script on my webhost's wiki to setup a custom install of PHP5, but now theyre telling me they need to move my account to a 64-bit server, and I have no idea how to set this up. APC needs the PHP5 installation to use cgi/fastcgi. I Dunno how that applies to 64-bit or what other considerations need to be made. Does anyone have any idea how to do this, or by least changing the #script to compile using the 64-bit PHP. I'm learning so much from this site, thanks for your help.

I did chroot /mnt/sda2 but I don't know how to mount sda3 to /home, and my various attempts didn't work. As I am unfamiliar with chroot, my approach could be wrong, so it would be great if you could suggest what I should do, given my circumstances.

  Certificate request process works fine. Once the certificate is received from VeriSign, the installation process also works fine (no errors.) However, once installed, the new certificate is not "assigned." Meaning, when I view the IIS instance security properties, it still shows the previous certificate start & end dates. Thoughts? Windows 2003, Web Edition. I have 3 other Win2003WE machines, configured nearly the same, and do not have this problem.

But after successful installation the service doesn't start. If this is a non microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to the service specific error code 0 I then try to install the same installer on Win XP and it worked.   I would like to run ubuntu on my external hard drive. I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open. • php.ini settings change not taking effect for large file uploads

  My server was just reprovisioned, and my application which uploads large (100M+) files now breaks upon re-installation. the symptom is quite consistent : smaller files (8mb in my tests) upload just fine. Larger files cut off at quite close to the same point every time given a particular computer. a file that fails at 26% will fail at just about the same every time. One that takes 1:40s to fail will take within 2 seconds of that every time, before failure. I have set my php.ini settings extravagently : post_max_size = 512M upload_max_filesize = 512M max_input_time = 3600 max_execution_time 3600 Is there possibly a setting at the Apache Level which would override PHP?
