  • Can I have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 call a DOS command and redirect the output to a file?

    I'd like to have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 that calls a DOS command and redirects the output (stdout and stderr) to a file. Just calling the command and "" redirecting it will not capture stderr, so there are two parts to this: calling a DOS command capturing both stderr and stdout to a file during that call I'd then like to open this file in Visual Studio after the command completes. I'm new to Visual Studio 2005 macro writing, and VB/VBA, so that's the kind of help that I'm looking for. Thanks, Mark

  • why does Visual Studio not enforce try-catch-block implementation?

    Coming from Eclipse/Java, I noticed that in VisualStudio/C# it is not mandatory to care about Exceptions. While Eclipse forces the user to implement a try-catch-block or to add a throws declaration, this is not the case in Visual Studio. What is the reason Visual Studio doesn't inform about unhandled exceptions? Can I configure Visual Studio to force me to implement try-catch-blocks, or at least add a compiler-warning?

    Hi there, I'm back to C/C++ after some break. I've a following problem: I've a solution where I've several projects (compilable and linkable). Now I need to add another project to this solution which depends on some sources from other projects. My new project compiles without any problems (I've added "existing sources" to my project). the error: 1>Linking... 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "int __cdecl saveLic(char *,struct Auth *)" (?saveLic@@YAHPADPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl getSysInfo(struct Auth *)" (?getSysInfo@@YAXPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) Functions saveLic, and getSysInfo are defined in files which I've added to my new project from existing ones. There is object file created during compilation with those functions in target dir, but my LicenceManager class doesn't want to link. I use some extern "C" , and #pragma pack somewhere, but no more fancy stuff. I think every directory, lib and other necessary dependencies are visible in settings for this project.   • Can I switch the Visual C++ runtime to another heap?

    My program uses a third party dynamic link library that has huge memory leaks inside. Both my program and the library are Visual C++ native code. Both link to the Visual C++ runtime dynamically. I'd like to force the library into another heap so that all allocations that are done through the Visual C++ runtime while the library code is running are done on that heap. I can call HeapCreate() and later HeapDestroy(). If I somehow ensure that all allocations are done in the new heap I don't care of the leaks anymore - they all go when I destroy the second heap. Is it possible to force the Visual C++ runtime to make all allocations on a specified heap?

  • Adding an expression based image in a client report definition file (RDLC)

    In previous posts, I showed you how to create a report using Visual Studio 2010 and how to add a hyperlink to the report.  In this post, I show you how to add an expression based image to each row of the report. This similar to displaying a checkbox column for Boolean values.  A sample project is attached to the bottom of this post. To start off, download the project we created earlier from here.  The report we created had a “Discontinued” column of type Boolean. We are going to change it to display an “available” icon or “unavailable” icon based on the “Discontinued” row value.    Load the project and double click on Products.rdlc. With the report design surface active, you will see the “Report Data” tool window. Right click on the Images folder and select “Add Image..”   Add the available_icon.png and discontinued_icon.png images (the sample project at the end of this post has the icon png files)    You can see the images we added in the “Report Data” tool window.   Drag and drop the available_icon into the “Discontinued” column row (not the header) We get a dialog box which allows us to set the image properties. We will add an expression that specifies the image to display based the “Discontinued” value from the Product table. Click on the expression (fx) button.   Add the following expression : = IIf(Fields!Discontinued.Value = True, “discontinued_icon”, “available_icon”)   Save and exit all dialog boxes. In the report design surface, resize the column header and change the text from “Discontinued” to “In Production”.   (Optional) Right click on the image cell (not header) , go to “Image Properties..” and offset it by 5pt from the left. (Optional) Change the border color since it is not set by default for image columns. We are done adding our image column! Compile the application and run it. You will see that the “In Production” column has red ‘x’ icons for discontinued products.     As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?

    Lately I had Entity Framework 4.0 session where I introduced new features of Entity Framework. During session I found out with audience how Entity Framework 4.0 can generate optimized SQL. After session I also showed guys one horrible example about how awful SQL can be generated by Entity Framework. In this posting I will cover both examples. Optimal SQL Before going to code take a look at following model. There is class called Event and I will use this class in my query. Here is the LINQ To Entities query that uses small anonymous type. var query = from e in _context.Events             select new { Id = e.Id, Title = e.Title }; Debug.WriteLine(((ObjectQuery)query).ToTraceString()); Running this code gives us the following SQL. SELECT      [Extent1].[event_id] AS [event_id],      [Extent1].[title] AS [title]  FROM [dbo].[events] AS [Extent1] This is really small – no additional fields in SELECT clause. Nice, isn’t it? Horrible SQL Ayende Rahien blog shows us darker side of Entiry Framework 4.0 queries. You can find comparison betwenn NHibernate, LINQ To SQL and LINQ To Entities from posting What happens behind the scenes: NHibernate, Linq to SQL, Entity Framework scenario analysis. In this posting I will show you the resulting query and let you think how much better it can be done. Well, it is not something we want to see running in our servers. I hope that EF team improves generated SQL to acceptable level before Visual Studio 2010 is released. There is also morale of this example: you should always check out the queries that O/R-mapper generates. Behind the curtains it may silently generate queries that perform badly and in this case you need to optimize you data querying strategy. Conclusion Entity Framework 4.0 is new product with a lot of new features and it is clear that not everything is 100% super in its first release. But it still great step forward and I hope that on 12.04.2010 we have new promising O/R-mapper available to use in our projects.   • Dictionary as DataMember in WCF after installing .NET 4.5 [migrated]

    After installing .NET Framework 4.5 with Visual Studio 2012, whenever I want to obtain the reference from a WCF service, my dictionaries are changed into arrays. For example, Dictionary<int, double> is changed into ArrayOfKeyValueOfintdoubleKeyValueOfintdouble. This happens in both Visual Studio 2012 and 2010 (both Express). I've reviewed my configuration and the dictionary data type in the service reference configuration is System.Collection.Generic.Dictionary. Changing this doesn't make a difference. Reverting to just using Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 is not an option.

    Always a bummer when you update a product and something stops working.  I am hoping it is an installation issue, but each time I go to run “Publish..” in my Web Application, the publish works, but Visual Studio 2012 crashes.  I just noticed this beginning after I ran the Visual Studio 2012 RC July Updates. Please Wait...;Check:SQLVerifyInstall What I'm trying to accomplish is have the SQL Server package install but only have the instance name itself reference the name of the machine name and nothing more. What I'm receiving instead is a named instance instead of local such as MachineName\SQLEXPRESS which is not what I want to receive. I need a local instance instead of a named instance due to the way my code is written to be able to install and talk with the databases in question. I would change it, trust me, were it not the fact that this install package is a replacement to a previous package that used the MSDE installer. I have to be able to support both through code. Any suggestions are welcome but a clear and concise method to get the installer to quietly install using only the machine name is my main goal. Thanks for the help and support!

  • Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

    Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas?   • SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB &ndash; How to get started

    As many of you aware, SQL Server can be a bit of a pig when it comes to system resources on your development machine. As part of the 2012 products Microsoft has added SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB which is a happy medium for myself when thinking about having to install a full blown SQL Server on my box. This however does not work in all cases for all development but if you are doing web or local client development then it should suffice. On the other hand, if you are working with technologies like SharePoint or trying to run Team Foundation Server on your local box then you will be out of luck while using LocalDB. To start of with, the localDB setup is delivered and packaged with Visual Studio 2012 RC. If you want to get the stand-alone installer you can download it here in either the 32 or 64 bit flavors. Once you get it installed you can start using it right away in either Visual Studio 2010 or the new Visual Studio 2012 RC. To get started you can open the SQL Server object explorer in Visual Studio by clicking   the menu option View –> SQL Server Object Explorer. This will bring up to the navigation pane where you can add a SQL Server. Once you add the SQL Server you will be prompted with the “Connect to Server” dialog to enter the server for which you can use “(localdb)\v11.0”. Click connect and you should be connected to your localDB where you can create and manage databases from Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 or SSMS. Once you have started creating databases here you can use the database projects in Visual Studio with these database as well as use the (localdb)\v11.0 server name inside your connections string information for your development environment. Hope this helps someone get started with SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB! It provides a great balance for developing against SQL Server 2012.
