• iPhone Crash Report

  My iPhone app is crashing for certain users in UK. I tried using UK timezone and their region format but couldn't reproduce the crash on my iPhone or emulator. Eventually got a crash report and I was able to symbolicate it. However, I have a hard time understanding the results. It appears thread 0 crashed in a system library. The only call from my app is main.m. Thread 4 has something familiar. • Asp.net override Membership settings at runtime (asp.net mvc)

  I had an application that hooked onto 1 single database. The app now needs to hook into multiple databases. What we want to do is, using the same application/domain/hostname/virtual dir give the user the option on the login screen to select the "App/Database" they want to connect into. Each database has the App tables/data/procs/etc as well as the aspnet membership/roles stuff. When the user enters the username/password and selects (select list) the application, I want to validate the user against the selected applications database. Presently the database connection string for membership services is saved in the web.config. Is there any way I can override this at login time? Also, I need the "remember me" function to work smoothly as well. How does this work when the user comes back to the app in 5 hours... This process should be able to identify the user and application and log in appropriately.

• MEF = may experience frustration?

  Well, it's not THAT bad yet. :) But I do have questions after Reed has pointed me at MEF as a potential alternative to IoC (and so far it does look pretty good). Consider the following model: As you can see, I have an App, and this app uses Plugins (whoops, missed that association!). Both the App and Plugins require usage of an object of type CandySettings, which is found in yet another assembly. I first tried to use the ComposeParts method in MEF, but the only way I could get this to work was to do something like this in the plugin code. var container = new CompositionContainer(); container.ComposeParts(this, new CandySettings()); But this doesn't make any sense, because why would I want to create the instance of CandySettings in the plugin? It should be in the App. But if I put it in the App code, then the Plugin doesn't magically figure out how to get at ICandySettings, even though I am using [Import] in the plugin, and [Export] in CandySettings. The way I did it was to use MEF's DirectoryCatalog, because this allows the plugin, when constructed, to scan all of the assemblies in the current folder and automagically import everything that is marked with the [Import] attribute. So it looks like this, and potentially in every plugin: var catalog = new DirectoryCatalog( "."); var container = new CompositionContainer( catalog); container.ComposeParts( this); This totally works great, but I can't help but think that this is not how MEF was intended to be used?

  Hello everyone, I have a silverlight app that will be installed OOB with full trust and hence i want to create a certificate to sign the app. Since I'm going to have full control of the clients where the app will be installed I don't need to buy a certificate, because I know that I can create one and install it in the Trusted Root Certification Authority.   Hi, I am using JBoss4.2.2 and java6. The deployed ear's name is apa.ear In a servlet I have the following code line: placeBid = (PlaceBid) context.lookup("apa/" + PlaceBid.class.getSimpleName() + "/remote"); I have a generated jboss-app.xml like this: <jboss-app> <loader-repository>apa:app=ejb3</loader-repository> </jboss-app> When trying to get the PlaceBid via the context I get this exception java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy99 cannot be cast to se.nextit.actionbazaar.buslogic.PlaceBid The PlaceBid interface looks like this: @Remote public interface PlaceBid { Long addBid(String userId, Long itemId, Double bidPrice); } When I run the example coming with EJB3 in action it works. EJB3 in action sample code comes with ant building. I want to use Maven so I have rearranged the code some. However, I don't understan what I am doing wrong here. • KeepAlive packets over a Soap request

  I've been debugging some Soap requests we are making between two servers on the same VLAN. The app on one server is written in PHP, the app on the other is written in Java. I can control and make changes to the PHP code, but I can't affect the Java server. The PHP app forms the XML using the DOMDocument objects, then sends the request using the cURL extension. When the soap request took longer than 5 minutes to complete, it would always wait until the max timeout limit and exit with a message like this: Operation timed out after 900000 milliseconds with 0 bytes received After sniffing the packets that were being sent, it turns out that the problem was caused by a 5 minute timeout in the network that was closing what it thought was a stale connection. There were two ways to fix it: bump up the timeout in iptables, or start sending KeepAlive packets over the request. To be thorough, I would like to implement both solutions. Bumping up the timeout was easy for ops to do, but sending KeepAlive packets is turning out to be difficult. The cURL library itself supports this (see the --keepalive-time flag for the CLI app), but it doesn't appear that this has been implemented in the PHP cURL library. I even checked the source to make sure it wasn't an undocumented feature. So my question is this: How the heck can I get these packets sent? I see a few clear options, but I don't like any of them: Write a wrapper that will kick off the request by shell_execing the CLI app. This is a hack that I just don't like Update the cURL extension to support this. This is a non-option according to Ops. Open the socket myself. I know just enough to be dangerous. I also haven't seen a way to do this with fsockopen, but I could be missing something. Switch to another library. What exists that supports this? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I get the current location with -(void)locationManager:(CLLocationManager *)manager didUpdateToLocation:(CLLocation *)newLocation fromLocation:(CLLocation *)oldLocation { NSLog(@"%f,%f", [newLocation coordinate]); The Log displays the correct coordinates like 2010-04-05 15:33:25.436 deBordeaux[60657:207] 37.331689,-122.030731 I didn't find the right way to transmit the coordinates to the url-string. Does someone can give me a hint how-to?

  Hi, I wrote an IHttpModule that compress my respone using gzip (I return a lot of data) in order to reduce response size. It is working great as long as the web service doesn't throws an exception. In case exception is thrown, the exception gzipped but the Content-encoding header is disappear and the client doesn't know to read the exception. How can I solve this? Why the header is missing? I need to get the exception in the client. • Unable to open database SQLITE iPhone

  Hi there, I am using SQLITE database in my iPhone app. I have a refresh button on my home screen and on click of that refresh button I usually fetch the data from my web service and store it into my database. In normal scenario it works fine but when I click my refresh button 4-5 times frequently my app crashes and My app log Shows "Unable to open the database" I am not sure why I am getting this SQLLITE error. Is there any restriction on inserting number of rows in SQLITE database?

  I have a button in my activity, when you click the button an if statement is ran against its text label; if(BTN_1.getText()=="firsttext"){ //do some stuff, then... BTN_1.setText("secondtext"); }else if(BTN_1.getText()=="secondtext"){ //do other stuff, then... BTN_1.setText("firsttext"); } Firstly, if I hit the home button and go back to the desktop and then click back onto my app the view has reset its self; if I press the button and leave it in a state where the text of the button is "secondtext", when I return to my app it says "firsttext", how can I stop the view of my app refreshing its self like this? Secondly, under my XML layout I have defined the buttons text; android:text="firsttext" But this won't actually match my if statement above, under onCreate of this app I have: BTN_CONNECT.setText("Connect"); But visually the text of the button is exactly the same, why won't it match? • Silverlight 4, Out of browser, Printing, Automatic updates

  I have a very critial business application presently running using Winforms. The application is a very core UI shell. It accepts input data, calls a webservice on my server to do the computation, displays the results on the winforms app and finally send a print stream to the printer. Presently the application is deployed using Click-once. Moving forward, I am trying to contemplate wheather I should move the application into a Silverlight application. Couple of reasons I am thinking silverlight. Gives clients the feel that it is a cloud based solution. Can be accessed from any PC. While the clickonce app is able to do this as well, they have to install an app, and when updates are available they have to click "Yes" to update. The application presently has a drop down list of customers, this list has expanded to over 3000 records. Scrolling through the list is very painful. With Silverlight I am thinking of the auto complete ability. Out of the browser - this will be handy for those users who use the app daily. I haven't used Silverlight previous hence looking for some expert advice on a few things: Printing - does silverlight allow sending raw print data to the printer. The application prints to a Zebra Thermal label printer. I have to send raw bytes to the printer with the commands. Can this be done with SL, or will it always prompt the "Print" dialog? Out of browser - when SL apps are installed as out of browser, how to updates come through, does the app update automatically or is the user prompted to opt for update?

But the thing is if I change the query target from TYPES to METHODS then DeriveFrom is not going to apply. How can these criteria be preserved?

  I'm currently designing a smart client app (WPF) which needs to operate in an "occasionally disconnected" mode. For the offline scenario, I'm looking at using: Disconnected Service Agent Application Block (from the Smart Client Software Factory) Microsoft Sync Framework I should mention that I want my smart client app to be XCOPY-deployable, auto-updating, and installable without administrative privledges -- basically a ClickOnce-deployed app. From what I can tell this means the Microsoft Sync Framework is out because it has some COM in it's implementation that needs to get registered on the client which requires admin rights. Is it possible to XCOPY deploy and run MSF from a ClickOnce app? Any other ideas for data synchronization?

• How to make dynamically generated .net service client read configuration from another location than

  Hi, I've currently written code to use the ServiceContractGenerator to generate web service client code based on a wsdl, and then compile it into an assembly in memory using the code dom. I'm then using reflection to set up the binding, endpoint, service values/types, and then ultimately invoke the web service method based on xml configuration that can be altered at run time. This all currently works fine. However, the problem I'm currently running into, is that I'm hitting several exotic web services that require lots of custom binding/security settings. This is forcing me to add more and more configuration into my custom xml configurations, as well as the corresponding updates to my code to interpret and set those binding/security settings in code. Ultimately, this makes adding these 'exotic' services slower, and I can see myself eventually reimplementing the 'system.serviceModel' section of the web or app.config file, which is never a good thing. My question is, and this is where my lack of experience .net and C# shows, is there a way to define the configuration normally found in the web.config or app.config 'system.serviceModel' section somewhere else, and at run time supply this to configuration to the web service client? Is there a way to attach an app.config directly to an assembly as a resource or any other way to supply this configuration to the client? Basically, I'd like attach an app.config only containing a 'system.serviceModel' to the assembly containing a web service client so that it can use its configuration. This way I wouldn't need to handle every configuration under the sun, I could let .net do it for me. Fyi, it's not an option for me to put the configuration for every service in the app.config for the running application. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Bryan

  I have a method with an incoming variable, which represents a script. e.g. hello.groovy Foo.init(this) Foo.groovy class Foo { static init(app) { } } What is the best way to add a ton of new functionality to the app variable in the init method? Basically, I would like to add all the functionality of another object to the app object. For instance, if I had another class: class Bar { def a() { } def b() { } } I would like the app object to basically be a new Bar(). In JavaScript, this is easy by using the prototype object, but I cannot seem to get it working in groovy. What is the best way to accomplish this? Or should I be doing something differently?

• iPad + OpenGL ES2. Why the Puzzling Virtual Memory Spike During Device Reorientation?

  I've been spending the afternoon starring at Xcode Instruments memory monitor trying to decipher the following memory issue. I have a fullscreen OpenGL ES2 app running on iPad. I am fanatical about memory issues so my retains/releases are all nicely balanced. I closely monitor memory leaks. My app is basically squeeky clean. Except occassionally when I reorient the device. Portrait to Landscape. Back and forth I rock the device stress testing my discarding and rebuilding of the OpenGL framebuffer. The ambient memory footprint of my app is about 70MB Real Mems and 180MB Virtual Mems. Real memory hardly varies at all during device rotations. However the virtual mems reading sometimes briefly spikes up to 250MB and then recedes back to 180MB. No real pattern. But clearly related discarding/rebuilding the framebuffer. I see random memory warnings in my NSlogs but the app just hums along, no worries. 1) Since iPhone OS devices don't have VM could someone explain to me what the VM reading actually means? 2) My app totally leak free and generally bulletproof dispite the VM spikes. Never crashes. Rock solid. Should I be concerned about this? 3) There is clearly something happening in OpenGL framebuffer land that is causing this but I am using the API in the proper way: paraphrasing: Discarding the framebuffer: glDeleteRenderbuffers(1, &m_colorbuffer); glDeleteFramebuffers(1, &m_framebuffer); Rebuilding the framebuffer: glGenFramebuffers(1, &m_framebuffer); glGenRenderbuffers(1, &m_colorbuffer); Is there some other memory flushing trick I have missed? • Ajax Enabled WCF Service Javascript issue...

  I'm a noob working with Ajax-Enabled WCF Services... Right now I have an AJAX service which calls a different WCF service that is using wsHttpBinding. The WCF wsHttpBinding service lives in a different web app on the same IIS6 server. The AJAX javascript proxy is only created when I enable anonymous access on the app hosting the AJAX service. If I remove anonymous access, IE6 bombs with an 'Undefined' error when call the AJAX proxy. In a nut shell, my AJAX service sends a request back to IIS (same domain/app), and while on the server it sends a WCF service request for data on a different app on the same IIS server. The service returning data is setup with Windows authentication, wsHttpBinding, and security mode is set to message. Any ideas? Both apps have are using windows authentication.

• Debugging in Maven?

  Is it possible to launch a debugger such as jdb from maven? I have a pom.xml file that compiles the project successfully. However, the program hangs somewhere and I would really like to launch jdb or an equivalent debugger to see what's happening. I compile using mvn compile and launch using: mvn exec:java -Dexec.mainClass="com.mycompany.app.App" I was expecting something like: mvn exec:jdb -Dexec.mainClass="com.mycompany.app.App" to launch the debugger but, as usual, my expectations are incongruent with maven's philosophy. Also, I couldn't find any documentation (on Maven's website or google) to describe how debugging works. I suspect that I have to use some plugin.
