• MySQL Rank Not Matching High Score in Table

  While making a game the MySQL call to get the top 10 is as follows: SELECT username, score FROM userinfo ORDER BY score DESC LIMIT 10 This seems to work decently enough, but when paired with a call to get a individual player's rank the numbers may be different if the player has a tied score with other players. The call to get the players rank is as follows: SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM userinfo ui WHERE (ui.score, ui.username) >= (uo.score, uo.username)) AS rank FROM userinfo uo WHERE username='boddie'; Example results from first call: +------------+-------+ | username | score | +------------+-------+ | admin | 4878 | | test3 | 3456 | | char | 785 | | test2 | 456 | | test1 | 253 | | test4 | 78 | | test7 | 0 | | boddie | 0 | | Lz | 0 | | char1 | 0 | +------------+-------+ Example results from second call +------+ | rank | +------+ | 10 | +------+ As can be seen, the first call ranks the player at number 8 on the list, but the second call puts him at number 10.   I'm learning C++ and I am writing a function that determines whether a string contains only alphanumeric characters and spaces. I suppose I am effectively testing whether it matches the regular expression ^[[:alnum:] ]+$ but without using regular expressions. I have seen a lot of algorithms revolve around iterators, so I tried to find a solution that made use of iterators, and this is what I have: #include <algorithm> static inline bool is_not_alnum_space(char c) { return !(isalpha(c) || isdigit(c) || (c == ' ')); } bool string_is_valid(const std::string &str) { return find_if(str.begin(), str.end(), is_not_alnum_space) == str.end(); } Is there a better solution, or a “more C++” way to do this?

• 2 Classes need each other declared C++

  I have a "Game" class which holds all the games settings and manages the game. I have a "Grid" class which is the grid the game is played on. The "Game" class initializes a "Grid" object as one of its members (passing itself ("this") as one of the parameters for "Grid"s constructor).. The "Grid" object therefor needs to deal with a "Game*" pointer. To do this it needs to know what "Game" is; i need to declare it before "Grid". But "Game" uses "Grid"...so it also needs "Grid" declared before it. so confused on how to include headers/etc correctly here..

At the moment I am thinking of passing a parameter in to SQL query and count the characters one by one and then sum, however I did not start the VBA part yet, and frankly wouldn't want to do that.   In C, I have format strings, something like: char *msg = "wlll you marry me" fprintf(stderr, "%s, %s?", name, msg); Now, can I do something similar in lua with format strings? I.e. I want something functionally equivalent to: name .. ", " .. msg .. "?" but not so ugly, in lua. Okay, so I can do string.format("%s, %s?", name, msg), but can I go even a step further, something like perl style, where I can go: "%name, %msg?" Thanks!

• How to signal a buffer full state between posix threads

  Hi I have two threads, the main thread 'A' is responsible for message handling between a number of processes. When thread A gets a buffer full message, it should inform thread B and pass a pointer to the buffer which thread B will then process. When thread B has finished it should inform thread A that it has finished. How do I go about implementing this using posix threads using C on linux. I have looked at conditional variables, is this the way to go? . I'm not experienced in multi threaded programming and would like some advice on the best avenue to take. Thanks

  Hi all, I have a wide char string is L"hao123--??????", and it must be encoded to "hao123--\u6211\u7684\u4E0A\u7F51\u4E3B\u9875". I was told that the encoded string is a special “%uNNNN” format for encoding Unicode UTF-16 code points. In this website(http://rishida.net/tools/conversion/), it tell me it's JavaScript escapes. But I don't know how to encode it with C++. It that any library to do this work? or give me some tips. Thanks my friends!

• correct way to store an exception in a variable

  I have an API which internally has some exceptions for error reporting. The basic structure is that it has a root exception object which inherits from std::exception, then it will throw some subclass of that. Since catching an exception thrown in one library and catching it in another can lead to undefined behavior (at least Qt complains about it and disallows it in many contexts). I would like to wrap the library calls in functions which will return a status code, and if an exception occurred, a copy of the exception object. What is the best way to store an exception (with it's polymorphic behavior) for later use? I believe that the c++0x futures API makes use of something like this. So what is the best approach? The best I can think of is to have a clone() method in each exception class which will return a pointer to an exception of the same type. But that's not very generic and doesn't deal with standard exceptions at all. Any thoughts?

  I have a data base with Price_old like: Date --- Hour --- Price _____________________________ Jan 1 --- 1 --- $3.0 Jan 1 --- 2 --- $3.1 Jan 1 --- 3 --- $3.3 Jan 1 --- 4 --- $3.15 Jan 2 --- 1 --- $2.95 Jan 2 --- 2 --- $3.2 Jan 2 --- 3 --- $3.05 What I then have is a spreadsheet, with the same structure, that I will be reading into a datatable, I'll call the new datatable Price_New, note that price new may not have all the same date/hours as Price_Old So, I end up with 2 datatables, Price_Old, and Price_New, and what I need to do is update Price_old with the new prices in Price_New, and then commit those new prices to the Database. I am kinda new to LINQ (about 30 mins of experience) and would really appreciate if someone could give me a pointer or two on whether or not this is doing in LINQ and what the best method would be.   Hello, gcc 4.4.4 c89 I got into a recent discussion about "fixed width strings" and "zero terminated strings". When I think about this. They seem to be the same thing. A string with a terminating null. i.e. char *name = "Joe bloggs"; Is a fixed width string that cannot be changed. And also has a terminating null. • can't click on input element behind div element

  On my site: http://alsite.com.br/solalev/ I have some elements on the bottom of page that I can't click through. Above the elements is a div called push.. I use this div to make the footer always stay on the bottom of my page even when the content is smaller... (I dont know if I do this right.. but it has worked).. So.. on Chrome and Firefox I can't click.. but on IE this works.... I use this: .push{ pointer-events: none; } but nothing happens...

• buffer overflow with boost::program_options

  Hello, I have a problem using boost:program_options this simple program, copy-pasted from boosts' documentation : #include <boost/program_options.hpp> int main( int argc, char** argv ) { namespace po = boost::program_options; po::options_description desc("Allowed options"); desc.add_options() ("help", "produce help message") ("compression", po::value<int>(), "set compression level") ; return 0; } fails with a buffer overflow. I have activated the "buffer security switch", and when I run it I get an "unknown exception (0xc0000409)" when I step over the line desc.add_options()... I use Visual Studio 2005 and boost 1.43.0. By the way it does run if I deactivate the switch but I don't feel comfortable doing so... unless it's possible to deactivate it locally. So do you have a solution to this problem? EDIT I found the problem I was linking against libboost_program_options-vc80-mt.lib which wasn't the good library.

  Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about popular mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other (or maybe even \r for iOS)? I'll supply both types to the user just in case, but I'd like to choose one as default. Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here? Once again, I'll supply a range of encodings to the user just in case, but I'd like to prioritize or use certain encodings as default if it's appropriate.

  Hi, Which lightweight SQL Server type could I use on my Dev machine for a C# VS2010 project? (e.g. sql server express, sql server ce, full version etc). That is, I'm running on a VMWare fusion instance on my MacBook, and just want something to develop against for a C# VS2010 project. I'm planning on having a simple database (not many tables) but will use Entity Framework. I haven't used SQL Server before so a quick pointer re what is the best database admin interface/app to use for the version you recommend (e.g. to create database, tables etc).

• For Qt 4.6.x, how to auto-size text to fit in a specified width?

  Inside of my QGraphicsRectItem::paint(), I am trying to draw the name of the item within its rect(). However, for each of the different items, they can be of variable width and similarly names can be of variable length. Currently I am starting with a maximum font size, checking if it fits and decrementing it until I find a font size that fits. So far, I haven't been able to find a quick and easy way to do this. Is there a better, or more efficient way to do this? • Parse a string containing percent sign into decimal

  I have a simple string containing VAT-percantage value that needs to be stored in a decimal. The string looks like this: "19.00%". When I use the decimal.Parse() methode I always get an FormatException. Code looks like this NumberFormatInfo nfi = new NumberFormatInfo() { PercentDecimalSeparator = ".", PercentSymbol = "%" }; decimal.Parse("19.00%",NumberStyles.Any, nfi); I know, that it would be possible (in the excample above) to simply remove the %-char from the string and then parse. But isn't there a solution to use built in parsing, which can be used without testing the string for the type of number the user typed in.

My answer is: n = recv( sock, inbuff, strlen( inbuff ), 0 ); However, I am not sure why *ptr is given in the declaration. So, I would like ask, what is the purpose of the pointer in this question??   I have, essentially, a matrix of data (lets say ints) that I would like to store in a 2D array in which the dimensions are not known until runtime (say x columns and y rows).
