• In C# should I use uint or int for values that are never supposed to be negative?

  Suppose that the MaxValue of (roughly :) ) 2^31 vs 2^32 does not matter. On one hand, using uint seems nice because it is self-explanatory, it indicates (and promises?) that some value may never be negative. However, int is more common, and a cast is often inconvenient. One can just use int and always supplement it with code contracts (everyone has moved to .Net 4.0 by now, right?) Standard libraries do use int for Length and Size properties, even though those should never be negative. So, is it obvious to you that int is better than uint most of the time, or is it more complicated? Please ask questions if you find that this question is not clearly stated. Thanks.

• UIView animation doesn't work first time

  Hello everybody, I have a seachButton in the navigation bar which upon hitting calls following method: - (IBAction)search:(id)sender { if (nil == searchViewController) searchViewController = [[SearchViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"SearchViewController" bundle:nil]; searchViewController.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [UIView setAnimationTransition:UIViewAnimationTransitionCurlDown forView:searchViewController.view cache:NO]; [self.view addSubview:searchViewController.view]; [UIView commitAnimations]; } It should load SearchViewController.xib which contains a view with UISearchBar and two buttons. When I call the search method for the first time, the view appears very quickly with some weird animation, when I call it again, the animation is alright. Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong?

• NSInvocationOperation and main thread

  Imagine that I have a view with some UIKit object as its subview (for example, UIActivityIndicatorView - this doesn't matter). This view also has a selector, called doSomething, which somehow manages UIKit object (in our example it can start or stop indicator view). I create NSInvocationOperation (from view's code parts) with initWithTarget:self selector:@selector(doSomething) object:nil. Then add it to NSOperationQueue. And all works fine. How?! It should be a new thread and non-thread-safe UIKit object! Why no error found (and no crash happened)?

• WCF Project vs. A folder in the existing website project?

  What way makes the most sense? I have a ASP.NET app... and maybe a Silverlight app in the future.. I want both to talk to web services.. At first, I like have the WCF project be by it self for the seperation.. But then I thought.. What is the point since I can just as easily have a 'WEBSERVICES' folder that contains all the .svc files and code in the EXISTING website project. ... Atleast that way.. deploying to a remote host will be a little easier since everything is in one project.. any other considerations ?

• Can't set background colour for UIView from ViewController

  I have the following code in the view controller: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; ThemeManager *themer = [ThemeManager sharedInstance]; UIView *theView = self.view; UIColor *forBackground = [themer backgroundColour]; [theView setBackgroundColor:forBackground]; } but when execution gets to the setBackgroundColor line, I get the following error: *** -[NSCFNumber CGColor]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1237c40 *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFNumber CGColor]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1237c40' There's got to be something simple that I'm doing wrong, how do I set the background colour? Do I have to subclass the view and do it in there? I'd prefer not to have the extra class, even though that is better separation of the whole model/view/controller thing. Update: value returned by [themer backgroundColour] is constructed using colorWithPatternImage:, could this make a difference?

  I am using search logic to filter results on company listing page. The user is able to specify any number of parameters using a variety of named URLs. For example: /location/mexico /sector/technology /sector/financial/location/argentina Results in the following respectively: params[:location] == 'mexico' params[:sector] == 'technology' params[:sector] == 'financial' and params[:location] == 'argentina' I am now trying to cleanup or 'DRY' my model code. Currently I have: def self.search(params) ... if params[:location] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:location] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:location] unless results end if params[:sector] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] unless results end ... end I don't like repeating the searchs.   I have a web application where users can register them self and then save Java and C++ programs in their account. Programs are saved in a tmp directory like, /tmp -user1 --program1 --program2 -user2 --program1 --program2 So all the users folders are in same "tmp" directory. I want to know how can I proved security by not allowing a user to access files of other users. A user will be executing a java or c++ program in his folder which can be used to read files on the server. How to prevent this? I am new to this thing I don't know how to go about this. The server is Linux server and project is in python using Django. Thank in advance

  Hello all, I have saved data which was saved using NSUserDefaults. I was under the impression that if there was nothing saved to the key already (first time app is run) it would default to 0. This however doesn't seem to be the case. • Javascript timer in parent window is cancelled on child window close

  I have a user UserControl on a web page. There is a javascript timer started by the control on the client that causes a web service to be called every few seconds. If the user clicks on the control a new browser window is opened (with window.open() ) to show a different page. Note the onclick returns false so there is no postback to the page. The page displayed in the second window also has a timer that operates in the same way as the first (calls a WebService at intervals). Upto this point everything is fine - each of the timers continue to run in their respective window. However, when I close the second window (either by clicking on the cross of the window or by calling self.close() ) the timer in the first stops. I've no idea why. Is there some relationship between the opener and opened window that I'm missing ?

I thought this would be an easy affair as UIButton is a subclass of UIView, however my code doesn't seem to work. • Modifying records in my migration throws an authlogic error

  I'm adding some columns to one of my database tables, and then populating those columns: def self.up add_column :contacts, :business_id, :integer add_column :contacts, :business_type, :string Contact.reset_column_information Contact.all.each do |contact| contact.update_attributes(:business_id => contact.client_id, :business_type => 'Client') end remove_column :contacts, :client_id end The line contact.update_attributes is causing the following Authlogic error: You must activate the Authlogic::Session::Base.controller with a controller object before creating objects I have no idea what is going on here - I'm not using a controller method to modify each row in the table. Nor am I creating new objects. The error doesn't occur if the contacts table is empty. I've had a google and it seems like this error can occur when you run your controller tests, and is fixed by adding before_filter :activate_authlogic to them, but this doesn't seem relevant in my case. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

CONNECT request is send when the client is going to access a https site. according to http://muffin.doit.org/docs/rfc/tunneling_ssl.html, it says i should response '200 Connection established'. but i got 'A TLS packet with unexpected length was received' on the client. the wiki described about the ssl handshake protocol, but it did not mention how to implement it.

  If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

• How can I create a button with a UIActivityIndicator in my navigation bar with the same style as nor

  All of the examples I've seen on here and other sites involved creating a UIActivityIndicatorView and loading it with something like: self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = [[[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:myActivityIndicatorView target:nil action:nil] autorelease]; However, that just creates a plain activity indicator in the navigation bar. What I want to do is have a button that looks just like the normal UIBarButtonSystemItem buttons but with an activity indicator instead of one of the default images. I've tried doing initWithImage and initWithTitle with nil images or titles and then adding the activity indicator as a subview, but that doesn't work. Any ideas?

I also have some views on it, but when I rotate the screen the view will be rotate but the images are not resizing though I have used the same -(void)willAnimateSecondHalfOfRotationFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration { UIInterfaceOrientation toOrientation = self.interfaceOrientation; } method but it cannot called.   Does anyone know why there would be one-off errors with NSLog and NSString? It works fine in 99% of my program, but for some reason this error appears in one of my model's description method: Example code: localFileId = 7; type = 2; localId = 5; NSLog(@"CachedFile localId=%d, 2=%d, localFileId=%d, type=%d, path=%@", localId, 2, localFileId, type, self.path); Example Result: CachedFile localId=5, 2=0, localFileId=2, type=7, path=(null) Notice the "0" that gets inserted in there, where it should be "2=2". This happens with NSString stringWithFormat as well.

• C#: Access 32-bit/64-bit DLL depending on platform

  Hi, we use a self-written 32bit C++ DLL from our C# applications. Now we've noticed that when the C# applications are run on a 64bit system, the 64bit runtime is automatically used and of course the 32bit DLL can not be accessed from the 64bit runtime. My question is: is there a way of using the 32bit DLL? If not, if I created a 64bit version of the DLL, would it be easily possible to let the application choose which one to P/Invoke to? I'm thinking of creating two helper classes in C#: One that imports the functions from the 32bit DLL and one that imports from the 64bit DLL, then creating a wrapper class with one function for each imported function that calls either the 32bit importer or the 64bit importer depending on the "bittyness" of the OS. Would that work? Or is there another easy way to do things?

• In Cocoa, why won't a textfield be shown until after the IBAction is completely executed?

  I have an IBAction with some simple code inside: -(IBAction)change:(id)sender { [textfield setHidden:NO]; [self dolengthyaction]; } 'textfield' is an NSTextField in a nib file, and -'dolengthyaction' is a function that takes about a minute to finish executing. My question is: Why isn't the textfield shown until AFTER "dolengthyaction" is done executing? I want it to be revealed before the dolengthyaction starts taking place. Is this an inherent problem or is there something wrong with my code? (or in another part of my code?) I'm still not very good at programming so I apologize if I worded something badly and formatted something wrong.

  Sorry if this is a repost but I couldn't quite search for it because I can't explain it in a few words. I have a super class with lots of methods but they will always (not all of them) be subclassed. From the super I need to access (read only) those methods. I could either leave the methods in super empty or I could just not type them in super but call them anyway like so [self myMethod] and it will call my subclassed method even if it doesn't exist in super. This works but Xcode gives me an error though. 'superclass' may not respond to '-subclassmethod' What should I do?

I only want see if there only in CMHT or medic not both. Would the right direction be using sub query to filer it out? I've done a search on NOT IN but how could you get to see check if its in more then 2 teams are not? • Whats wrong with this task queue setup?

  I've setup this task queue implementation on a site I host for a customer, it has a cron job which runs each morning at 2am "/admin/tasks/queue", this queues up emails to be sent out, "/admin/tasks/email", and uses cursors so as to do the queuing in small chunks. For some reason last night /admin/tasks/queue kept getting run by this code and so sent out my whole quota of emails :/. • alias_attribute and creating and method with the original attribute name causes a loop

  Im trying to dynamically create a method chain in one attribute in my model. By now I have this function: def create_filtered_attribute(attribute_name) alias_attribute "#{attribute_name}_without_filter", attribute_name define_method "#{attribute_name}" do filter_words(self.send("#{attribute_name}_without_filter")) end end so I receive a string with the attribute name, alias it for '*_without_filter*' (alias_method or alias_method_chain fails here, because the attribute isnt there when the class is created), and I create a new method with the attribute name, where I filter its contents. But somehow, when I call *"#{attribute_name}_without_filter"* it calls my new method (i think because the alias_attribute some how), and the program goes into a stack loop. Can someone please enlighten me on this.

• How to cache and store objects and set an expire policy in android?

  I have an app fetch data from internet, for better performance and bandwidth, I need to implement a cache layer. There are two different data coming from the internet, one is changing every one hour and another one does not change basically. So for the first type of data, I need to implement an expire policy to make it self deleted after it was created for 1 hour, and when user request that data, I will check the storage first and then goto internet if nothing found. I thought about using a SharedPrefrence or SQLDatabase to store the json data or serialized object string. My question is: 1) What should I use, SharedPrefrence or SQLDatabase or anything else, a piece of data is not big but there are maybe many instances of that data. 2) How to implement that expire system.

• Best practices for using memcached in Rails?

  Hello everybody, as database transcations in our app are getting more and more time consuming, we have started to use memcached to reduce the amount of queries passed to MySQL. All in all, it works fine and really saves a lot of time. But as caching was "silently appearing" as a workaround to give the app more juice, a lot of our models now contain code like this: def self.all_cached Rails.cache.fetch('object_name') { find( :all, :include => [associations]) } end This is getting more and more a pain as filling and flushing the cache happens in several classes accross the application. Now, I was wondering if there was a better way to abstract memcached logic to make it more powerful and easy to use across all needed models? I was thinking about having some kind of memcached-module which is included in all needed modules. But before playing around, I thought: Let's ask experts first :-) Thanks Matt
