• Checkbox in an email

  I am creating an email using the c# MailMessage and I am trying to add a checkbox that doesn't need to be clicked. The checkboxes will be used for a checklist of what to bring to an event (like a packing list). • ASP.NET MVC unit testing

  Hi, I'm getting started with unit testing and trying to do some TDD. I've read a fair bit about the subject and written a few tests. I just want to know if the following is the right approach. I want to add the usual "contact us" facility on my web site. You know the thing, the user fills out a form with their email address, enters a brief message and hits a button to post the form back. The model binders do their stuff and my action method accepts the posted data as a model. The action method would then parse the model and use smtp to send an email to the web site administrator infoming him/her that somebody filled out the contact form on their site. Now for the question .... In order to test this, would I be right in creating an interface IDeliver that has a method Send(emailAddress, message) to accept the email address and message body. Implement the inteface in a concrete class and let that class deal with smtp stuff and actually send the mail. If I add the inteface as a parameter to my controller constructor I can then use DI and IoC to inject the concrete class into the controller. But when unit testing I can create a fake or mock version of my IDeliver and do assertions on that. The reason I ask is that I've seen other examples of people generating interfaces for SmtpClient and then mocking that. Is there really any need to go that far or am I not understanding this stuff?

• What's the difference between the input type "text" and "password" in an html form?

  Hi everybody, this question might seem stupid, but here's the situation: I'm trying to create an auto login page for my mail using jquery's post request, but it's not working, it works with all other pages except with webmail. So, trying to figure out what was wrong, I recreated the login form, here's the code: <form id="form1" name="form1" method="post" action="https://login.hostmonster.com/"> <label>User <input type="text" name="login" id="user" /> </label> <label>Pass <input name="password" type="password" id="pass" /> </label> <input name="doLogin" type="submit" id="doLogin" value="Login"> </form> The strange thing is when you change the input type of pass to text, the form doesn't work! I can't figure out why. Anyway, if you can tell me what's the real difference between the input type text and password (and not what it says everywhere on the net that the only difference is that when you type stars appear instead of characters) I would appreciate it. Also, do you think this is affecting my jquery's post? • JSP: How can I still get the code on my error page to run, even if I can't display it?

  I've defined an error-page in my web.xml: <error-page> <exception-type>java.lang.Exception</exception-type> <location>/error.jsp</location> </error-page> In that error page, I have a custom tag that I created. The tag handler for this tag e-mails me the stacktrace of whatever error occurred. For the most part this works great. Where it doesn't work great is if the output has already begun being sent to the client at the time the error occurs. In that case, we get this: SEVERE: Exception Processing ErrorPage[exceptionType=java.lang.Exception, location=/error.jsp] java.lang.IllegalStateException I believe this error happens because we can't redirect a request to the error page after output has already started. The work-around I've used is to increase the buffer size on particularly large JSP pages. But I'm trying to write a generic error handler that I can apply to existing applications, and I'm not sure it's feasible to go through hundreds of JSP pages making sure their buffers are big enough. Is there a way to still allow my stack trace e-mail code to execute in this case, even if I can't actually display the error page to the client?

• How to increase the performance of a loop which runs for every 'n' minutes.

  Hi Giving small background to my requirement and what i had accomplished so far: There are 18 Scheduler tasks run at regular intervals (least being 30 mins) takes input of nearly 5000 eligible employees run into a static method for iteration and generates a mail content for that employee and mails. An average task takes about 9 min multiplied by 18 will be roughly 162 mins meanwhile there would be next tasks which will be in queue (I assume). So my plan is something like the below loop try { // Handle Arraylist of alerts eligible employees Iterator employee = empIDs.iterator(); while (employee.hasNext()) { ScheduledImplementation.getInstance().sendAlertInfoToEmpForGivenAlertType((Long)employee.next(), configType,schedType); } } catch (Exception vEx) { _log.error("Exception Caught During sending " + configType + " messages:" + configType, vEx); } Since I know how many employees would come to my method I will divide the while loop into two and perform simultaneous operations on two or three employees at a time. Is this possible. Or is there any other ways I can improve the performance. Some of the things I had implemented so far 1.Wherever possible made methods static and variables too Didn't bother to catch exceptions and send back because these are background tasks. (And I assume this improves performance) Get the DB values in one query instead of multiple hits. If am successful in optimizing the while loop I think i can save couple of mins. Thanks

  I have actionmailer set up. Emails are not being sent, and no errors. Where can I start my search to debug this? class Notifier < ActionMailer::Base default_url_options[:host] = APP_DOMAIN def email_blast(user, subject, message) subject subject from NOTIFIER_EMAIL recipients user.email sent_on Time.zone.now body :user => user.first_name + ' ' + user.last_name, :message => message end I do get a return in my log that the email was sent, just no actual email goes through. Also the reason, that this is not working is because I switched form a cluster to a solo box and some server settings were overwritten. I suspect that is probably the reason why this is not working. Anyone know what specific server settings I would have to look at ? UPDATE: ActionMailer::Base.delivery_method = :sendmail config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => "75.101.153.93" } I found this in my production.rb . This code was originally here when it worked. Again, I believe that there must be something missing on my server..I did a 'which sendmail' and it returned /usr/bin/sendmail , so I added this : config.action_mailer.raise_delivery_errors = false config.action_mailer.perform_deliveries = true config.action_mailer.sendmail_settings = { :location => '/usr/bin/sendmail', :arguments => '-i -t' } Redeployed, restarted the server, and tested it. No emails were sent. • tipfy for Google App Engine: Is it stable? Can auth/session components of tipfy be used with webapp?

  I am building a web application on Google App Engine that requires users to register with the application and subsequently authenticate with it and maintain sessions. I don't want to force users to have Google accounts. Also, the target audience for the application is the average non-geek, so I'm not very keen on using OpenID or OAuth. I need something simple like: User registers with an e-mail and password, and then can log back in with those credentials. I understand that this approach does not provide the security benefits of Google or OpenID authentication, but I am prepared to trade foolproof security for end-user convenience and hassle-free experience. I explored Django, but decided that consecutive deprecations from appengine-helper to app-engine-patch to django-nonrel may signal that path may be a bit risky in the long-term. I'd like to use a code base that is likely to be maintained consistently. I also explored standalone session/auth packages like gaeutilities and suas. GAEUtilities looked a bit immature (e.g., the code wasn't pythonic in places, in my opinion) and SUAS did not give me a lot of comfort with the cookie-only sessions. I could be wrong with my assessment of these two, so I would appreciate input on those (or others that may serve my objective). Finally, I recently came across tipfy. It appears to be based on Werkzeug and Alex Martelli spoke highly of it here on stackoverflow. I have two primary questions related to tipfy: As a framework, is it as mature as webapp? Is it stable and likely to be maintained for some time? Since my primary interest is the auth/session components, can those components of the tipfy framework be used with webapp, independent of the broader tipfy framework? If yes, I would appreciate a few pointers to how I could go about doing that.

• Unexpected $end in PHP file

  I'm working on a PHP contact form, but I can't get it to work. I get the following error in the Apache server log, running on an Ubuntu Server VM: PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/matthew/Sites/contactFormResponse.php on line 75, referer: http://192.168.1.4/contactForm.php From googling this error, it sounds like it's normally caused by either using the short PHP tag when the server's not set up to recognise them, or by having a block of code that isn't closed correctly. But as far as I can see that isn't the case here - as far as I can see it's all closed correctly. • Is there such a thing as IMAP for podcasts?

  Is there such a thing as IMAP for podcasts? I own a desktop, laptop, iPod, smartphone and a web-client all downloading StackOverflow Podcasts. (among others) They all tell me which episodes are available and which are already played. Everything is a horrible mess, ofcourse. My iPod is somewhat in sync with my desktop, but everything else is a random jungle. The same problem with e-mail is solved by IMAP. Every device gets content and meta-information from one server, and stays in sync with it. Per device, I can set preferences (do or do not download the complete archive including junkmail). Can we implement the IMAP approach for podcasts? Or is there a better metaphore/standard to solve this problem? How will the adoption-strategy look like? (by the way: except for the Windows smartphone, I own a full Apple-stack of products. Even then, I run into this problem) UPDATE The RSS-to-Imap link to sourceforge looks promesting, but very alpha/experimental. UPDATE 2 The one thing RSS is missing is the command/method/parameter/attribute to delete/unread items. RSS can only add, not remove. If RSS(N+1) (3?) could add a value for unread="true|false", it would be solved. If I cache all my RSS-feeds on my own server, and add the attribute myself, I only would have to convince iTunes and every other client to respect that.

• How do I POST/GET from rails to API with either ActiveResource or rest-client (preferred)?

  Hi, this is a pretty basic question but I'm not entirely clear how to do this. I am trying to use a third-party service that has RESTful service. The service is called Postful. But I'm not clear what exactly to do? I've looked at ActiveResource (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveResource/Base.html) and rest-client, but I'm still not clear exactly what steps, code, and files to create. http://www.postful.com/service/mail is one of the services (details found http://www.postful.com/developer/guide#rest ), but to upload an image I have to post the following (but I'm not sure how I actually do this?). But now, this works fine on localhost, I get the return values nad message properly but when I upload it on server this gives me an error as: data2 is null [Break on this error] $('#display').html(data2.returnValue); This only gives error for return value but insertion, sending mail functionality works fine. Please provide me with a good solution wherein I can be able to get back the return values without any error. Thanks in advance.

• Checking for valid email addresses

  I'm running a website with more than 60 000 registered users. Every week notifications are send to these users via email, now I've noticed some of the mail addresses do not exists anymore eg. the domain address is valid but the email name en asdas@ is not valid anymore since person does not work at a company anymore etc. Now I'm looping through the database and doing some regular expression checks and checking if the MX records exist with the following two functions function verify_email($email){ if(!preg_match('/^[_A-z0-9-]+((\.|\+)[_A-z0-9-]+)*@[A-z0-9-]+(\.[A-z0-9-]+)*(\.[A-z]{2,4})$/',$email)){ return false; } else { return true; } } // Our function to verify the MX records function verify_email_dns($email){ list($name, $domain) = split('@',$email); if(!checkdnsrr($domain,'MX')){ return false; } else { return true; } } If the email address is in an invalid format or the domain does not exists I delete the users account. Are there any methods I could use to check if the email address still exists or not if the domain name is valid and the email address is in the correct format? For example [email protected] does not exist anymore but test.com is a valid domain name.

• ajax html vs xml/json responses - perfomance or other reasons

  I've got a fairly ajax heavy site and some 3k html formatted pages are inserted into the DOM from ajax requests. What I have been doing is taking the html responses and just inserting the whole thing using jQuery. My other option is to output in xml (or possibly json) and then parse the document and insert it into the page. I've noticed it seems that most larger site do things the json/xml way. Google Mail returns xml rather than formatted html. Is this due to performance? or is there another reason to use xml/json vs just retrieving html? From a javascript standpoint, it would seem injecting direct html is simplest. In jQuery I just do this jQuery.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "getpage.php", data: requestData, success: function(response){ jQuery('div#putItHear').html(response); } with an xml/json response I would have to do jQuery.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "getpage.php", data: requestData, success: function(xml){ $("message",xml).each(function(id) { message = $("message",xml).get(id); $("#messagewindow").prepend(""+$("author",message).text()+ ": "+$("text",message).text()+ ""); }); } }); clearly not as efficient from a code standpoint, and I can't expect that it is better browser performance, so why do things the second way?

• How to receive Email in JEE application

  Obviously it's not so difficult to send out emails from a JEE application via JavaMail. What I am interested in is the best pattern to receive emails (notification bounces, mostly)? I am not interested in IMAP/POP3-based approaches (polling the inbox) - my application shall react to inbound emails. One approach I could think of would be Keep existing MTA (postfix on linux in my case) - ops team already knows how to configure / operate it For every mail that arrives, spawn a Java app that receives the data and sends it off via JMS. I could do this via an entry in /etc/aliases like myuser: "|/path/to/javahelper" with javahelper calling the Java app, passing STDIN along. MDB (part of JEE application) receives JMS message, parses it, detects bounce message and acts accordingly. Another approach could be Open a listening network socket on port 25 on the JEE application container. Associate a SessionBean with the socket. Bean is part of JEE application and can parse/detect bounces/handle the messages directly. Keep existing MTA as inbound relay, do all its security/spam filtering, but forward emails to myuser (that pass the filter) to the JEE application container, port 25. The first approach I have done before (albeit in a different language/setup). From a performance and (perceived) cleanliness point of view, I think the second approach is better, but it would require me to provide a proper SMTP transport implementation. Also, I don't know if it's at all possible to connect a network socket with a bean... What is your recommendation? Do you have details about the second approach?

The problem is that this body is multibyte encoded and I need to return a Unicode string. I guess, I have to use ::MultiByteToWideChar() function, but how can I guess, what codepage should I apply? Using CP_UTF8 is naive, because it can simply be not in UTF8. Using CP_ACP works, well, sometimes, but sometimes does not. So, my question is: how can I retrieve the information about message codepage. Does MAPI provide any functions for it? Or is there a way to decode multibyte string, other than MultiByteToWideChar()?   I ran into troubles with MySQL on my CentOS. I had some problems and backed up my database and removed mysql with all dependencies. After that I ran reinstalled: yum groupinstall "MySQL Database" Installed without errors. Running the mysql daemon: service mysqld start Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon. Starting MySQL: [FAILED] I also ran # /usr/bin/mysql_install_db --user=mysql Installing MySQL system tables... 120112 1:49:44 [ERROR] Error message file '/usr/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys' had only 480 error messages, but it should contain at least 481 error messages. Check that the above file is the right version for this program! 120112 1:49:44 [ERROR] Aborting Installation of system tables failed! Examine the logs in /var/lib/mysql for more information. You can try to start the mysqld daemon with: /usr/libexec/mysqld --skip-grant & and use the command line tool /usr/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables: shell> /usr/bin/mysql -u root mysql mysql> show tables Try 'mysqld --help' if you have problems with paths. Using --log gives you a log in /var/lib/mysql that may be helpful. The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at http://www.mysql.com Please consult the MySQL manual section: 'Problems running mysql_install_db', and the manual section that describes problems on your OS. If i preform a lookup on ctx for the specific binding I am adding I get an error. <cfset val = ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/adminemail") > No such binding: adminemail Preforming a listBindings returns an empty jrun.naming.JRunNamingEnumeration. <cfset val = ctx.listBindings("java:comp/env") > I only want to put a string value (probably several) into the ENC (or any JNDI directory at this point).

• Custom Solr sorting

  Hello everyone, I've been asked to do an evaluation of Solr as an alternative for a commercial search engine. The application now has a very particular way of sorting results using something called "buckets". I'll try to explain with a bit of details: In the interface they have 2 fields: "what" and "where". Both fields are actually sets of fields (what = category, name, contact info... and where= country, state, region, city...) so the copyfield feature of Solr immediately comes to mind. Now based on the field generated the actual match the result should end up in a specific bucket. In particular the first bucket contains all the result documents that have an exact match on the category field, in the second bucket all exact matches on name, the third partial matches on category, the fourth partial matches on name, the fifth matches on contact info etc... Then within each of those first tier buckets all results are placed in second tier buckets depending on what location was matched: city, then region, then province and so on. To even complicate things more there is also a third tier bucket where results are placed according to the value of a ranking field: all documents with the value 1 in the ranking field go in bucket 1 and so on. And finally results should be randomized in the third tier bucket... On top of this they obviously want support for facets and paging. My apologies for the long mail but I would greatly appreciate feedback and/or suggestions. • How to store data in mysql, to get the fastest performance?

  Hey, I'm thinking about it, witch of the following two query types would give me the fastest performance for a user messaging module inside my site: The first one i thought about is a multi table setup, witch has a connection table, and a main table. The connection table holds the connection between accounts, and the messaging table. In this case a query would look like following, to get some data of the author, and the messages he has sent: SELECT m.*, a.username FROM messages AS m LEFT JOIN connection_table ON (message_id = m.id) LEFT JOIN accounts AS a ON (account_id = a.id) WHERE m.id = '32341' Inserting into it is a little bit more "complicated". My other idea, and in my thought the better solution of this problem is that i store the data i would use in a connection table in the same table where is store the data of the mail. Sounds like i would get lots of duplicated entries, but no, because i have a field witch has text type and holds user ids like this: *24*32*249* If I want to query them, i use the mysql LIKE method. Deleting is an other problem, but for this i have one more field where i store who has deleted the post. Sad about that i don't know how to join this. So what would you recommend? Are there other ways?

• WCF with SSL- not finding localhost

  Hi guys, I'm trying to get WCF to use SSL with ANYTHING for FIVE DAYS now. I've gone through countless walkthroughs, generated more certificates than a mail order diploma company, even tried hot fixes. After working with MS dev tools since VB1, I am now considering flipping burgers as a career option. WCF, as far as I can see, is a complete lemon. Anyway, to get to my actual question: If I run through this walkthrough: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff648840.aspx I get to step 11 (adding the service reference) and get "There was an error downloading metadata from the address. Please verify that you have entered a valid address". Details of the error gives: There was an error downloading 'https://localhost/SSL6/Service.svc'. Unable to connect to the remote server No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:443 I'm using VS2008 on Windows 7 with IIS7. I followed the walkthrough exactly (apart from step 5 which was different on IIS7- I went into "SSL Settings" for the VD), so it shows my config (yes I've used httpsGetEnabled and mexHttpsBinding). Anyone care to save my sanity and job?

• Cannot open database "DataDir" requested by the login. The login failed

  Hi, I have a single user software that uses SQL Server database 2005. My computer was crushed while my software was on. I saved a copy of my database after I rescued my computer. However my software gives my following message. ( I don't know anything about SQL) However, I guess my database has the last login information. Since software was not shot down properly, it still thinks that I am logged in doesn't allow me to login again. How can I solve the problem? Can you help me? • [Database] How to model this one-to-one relation?

  I have several entities which respresent different types of users who need to be able to log in to a particular system. Additionally, they have different types of information associated with them. For example: a "general user", which has an e-mail address and "admin user", which has a workstation number (note that this a hypothetical case). Both entities also share common properties like first name, surname, address and telephone number. Finally, they naturally need to have a (unique) user name and a password to log in. In the application, the user just has to fill in his user name and password, and the functionality of the application changes slightly according to the type of the user. You can imagine that the username needs to be unique for this work. How should I model this effectively? I can't just create two tables, because then I can't force a unique constaint on the user name. I also can't put them all in just one table, because they have different types of specific information associated to them. I think I might need 3 seperate tables, one for "users" (with user name and password), one for the "general users" and another one for the "admin users", but how would the relations between these work? Or is there another solution? (By the way, the target DBMS is MySQL, so I don't think generalization is supported in the database system itself).
