• Re-downloading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard because of license issues?

  I have many clients who have purchased Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard. Unlike other Microsoft software, there is not a serial number provided for each customer to install the software. Futhermore, Microsoft's TechNet website lists this information about SQL Server instead of providing a key: "This product is pre-pidded." This means that the configuration file for SQL server contains your serial number instead of manually entering it. My question is then: does this serial change for each customer? The reason I ask: I'd rather not download a 3.2GB disc image over and over again for each of my customers individually. But, I don't want to risk using the same image over and over again resulting in Microsoft banning the serial for over use (as opposed to each customer using their copy with THEIR serial number.) • Japanese Multiplication simulation - is a program actually capable of improving calculation speed?

  On SuperUser, I asked a (possibly silly) question about processors using mathematical shortcuts and would like to have a look at the possibility at the software application of that concept. I'd like to write a simulation of Japanese Multiplication to get benchmarks on large calculations utilizing the shortcut vs traditional CPU multiplication. I'm curious as to whether it makes sense to try this. My Question: I'd like to know whether or not a software math shortcut, as described above is actually a shortcut at all. This is a question of programming concept. By utilizing the simulation of Japanese Multiplication, is a program actually capable of improving calculation speed? Or am I doomed from the start? The answer to this question isn't required to determine whether or not the experiment will succeed, but rather whether or not it's logically possible for such a thing to occur in any program, using this concept as an example. My theory is that since addition is computed faster than multiplication, a simulation of Japanese multiplication may actually allow a program to multiply (large) numbers faster than the CPU arithmetic unit can. I think this would be a very interesting finding, if it proves to be true. If, in the multiplication of numbers of any immense size, the shortcut were to calculate the result via less instructions (or faster) than traditional ALU multiplication, I would consider the experiment a success.

You can migrate guest domain from a system with UltraSPARC  T2+ or SPARC T3 CPU to a system with a SPARC T4 CPU.The guest domain on the source and target system must run Solaris 11 In order to enable cross CPU migration.In addition to that you need to change the cpu-arch property value on the source system. • Windows 8 - Synaptics driver - Mouse keeps freezing

  I have Win-8 Pro installed on my Dell XPS. This has Synaptic PS/2 Port TouchPad. As I upgraded the Laptop from Win7 to Win8 all my factory Mouse software (along with other preinstalled software) was all deleted. So for the mouse, I installed Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.3.15.1. Problem - every few seconds (or minutes at times), the mouse freezes. Windows is still working, it's just the mouse. I have to wait 5-15 seconds before the mouse works again. I thought this was because the Synaptic Driver I am installing is not Win-8 compatible but this is not the case. It seems the mouse freezes when Windows is working, loading or opening new programs/windows. I have the same problem in my other Laptop which has upgraded Win8 pro. This is a Dell Studio. What's causing this?

• Increasing Screen Resolution to more than limit and scaling to origional

  I have a laptop, with Screen Resolution - 1366x768 (most common) - I want to increase it further to 1600x900 (or higher), in the same ratio. I want to scale the higher resolution on my current screen to fit it. I found xrandr with command xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.4x1.4, this worked but again resulted to another problem, it does the scaling thing but the cursor is still blocked into the native screen resolution and I am not able to move it further, I found that the bug is already filed here. Also this command was only for Linux, I wanted to do this thing with both Linux and Windows (including Windows 8). I want a similar software that is bug free (at least not a major bug like this) and that supports Windows as well (or two separate software for Windows and Linux). Any help is appreciated and Thanks in advance.

• Looking for a good Web Server that is cheap

  I am a Project Manager, and former Lead Developer for a software portal system that requires a forum software to run. I am in need of a server that is cheap, reliable, and supports the latest PHP (5.2+), MySQL, unlimited e-mails (preferably), a cPanel, multiple sub-domains (atleast 3+). Currently I am paying $34.95 USD/month (approx. $420 USD/year). This is too high for me to pay to keep the site running. I just recently became Project Manager and in charge of Finances and I'm extremely concerned for the future of Dream Portal. With those prices I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it running for too long. Can someone please tell me of a good server that meets all of the requirements that I listed above that is cheaper on a yearly basis? Note: Currently on a Dedicated Server with limited disk space at 15000 MB (15 GB), monthly bandwidth = 500000 MB, 50 emails limit, 20 sub-domains limit, 30 FTP accts., and 25 SQL Databases.

• Lenovo ThinkPad: What does the PWMDBSVC.exe service do? It's writing a C:\Log.txt file.

  I found a file that keeps popping up in my C:\ drive root, Log.txt ... after installing Process Monitor and seeing what process was writing to it, I came across PWMDBSVC.exe, which appears to be part of the Lenovo ThinkPad software. Even if I delete it, I can get it to re-create the Log.txt when I lock and unlock my workstation. Does anybody know what this software does and whether it is safe to disable? I searched Google already and got the usual pile of useless hits on the process name but nothing seemingly definitive!

  I just turned 11 CDs with a total of 1gb of stuff into ISOs. Is it possible for me to just burn all the ISO videos into a DVD? Any alternative way for me to do it? Edit: I need to be playable on any DVD player. It's videos for my grandparents. Update: I read that DVD shrink should work (re-authoring software), but I didn't try it because when I imported the VIDEO_TS folders into the software, my video wasn't played widescreen, and I dont' know how to fix it.

  Hi, Our environment is: Windows Server 2003, Service Pack 2 SQL Server Express 2005 SQLServer JDBC driver 1.2 (also tried Jtds) Sun JDK 1.6 (we tried this on JDK 1.5 as well) There is no virus protection software on the host, and no firewall is enabled. We have Web application deployed in JBOSS 4.0.2. Our problem is that the JDBC connection to SQL server periodically gets disconnected, and then we can't reconnect to the SQL server at all, unless we physically restart the server on which JBOSS deployed. we are getting following error in log. Software caused connect on abort: recv failed Note: We are able to connect to SQL server using sample java test class. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, as this is a serious, mission-criticial problem for us right now.

• Do I have to chmod 777 my NFS folder when I share?

  Under Redhat, if I export a folder as an NFS mount, does the folder have to have RW for users/groups/others? Right now /storage/software is -rwxr-xr-x root/root i.e. /etc/exportfs /storage/software *(rw,sync) On my client, I can mount but I can't write. I'm using a regular user and NOT root. I think "no_root_squash" fixes it but I really don't want that. Then again, nor do I want to have to chmod 777 the folder on the server.

  I want to setup proxy server for my Mikrotik router. There is inbuilt web-proxy for Mikrotik router but I can extend this upto transparent proxy(kind of proxy server) only. We need High anonymity proxy so that we can hide our LAN static IPs(we don't have private IP) from outside Intruder/hackers. And also I know I can setup NAT rule to hide our IP(only private IP not public/static IP) as per this link, but I cann't hide static/public IP. Essentially I want to hide our Public/Static IP (there is static/public IP for all systems in our company) from outside Internet. To achieve this I guess I need other software apart from Mikrotik router gateway setup. can anyone suggest me Is there any other software to achieve my requirement? I know about squid proxy but am not sure whether It can hide our static/public IP. Note: we have assigned public/Static IP to all systems of our company since we have rights to access our company's system from anywhere by dedicated laptop(given by our company with more security) through VPN connection.

I wanted to use text description instead of using voice description, a simple example of what I've explained could be this short screencasting, where author uses short text messages instead of explaining it with his own voice. • What are some general guidelines for setting up an iOS project I will want to personally publish but sell in the future?

  I have an idea for a personal iOS project that I would like to write and release to the iOS store. I'm the type of developer who enjoys developing and publishing. I want to write quality software and take care of my customers. Assuming that I wrote an application that had reasonable success, there is a fair chance that I would want to sell the ownership rights of the app to another party and I'd use the proceeds to develop my next personal project which, in turn, I'd probably want to sell in the future. With that said, what are some general guidelines for creating, making and publishing an iOS project that I will eventually want to transfer to another company/developer? I know this is a bit of a broad question, but I request that the given advice be a general list of tips, suggestions and pitfalls to avoid. If any particular bullet point on your list needs more explanation, I'll either search for the answer or post a new question specific to that requirement. Thank you!   Hi, I'm trying to add a watermark and a credits image to all of my old videos. I downloaded them off YouTube so they are all flv (H.264?). Is there some software that will allow me do simple edits in batches? I know a little bit of Python and tried looking at some of the library but they all seem like overkill (and way above my head). So is there a solution besides getting some software and going through all my videos and doing it manually? They are all mostly the same length, but it would be nice to specify a relative position for my credits. e.g. show a static image for 10 seconds when the video is at 95%

• How do I SCP/FTP to a Coraid SR2421

  I need to save data to a Coraid SR2421. I am no expert and I'm trying to understand how this costy piece of hardware works. All I have is a Ethernet cable connecting my laptop and the coraid to a switch and the coraid's console with cursor blinking. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. edit and further explanation: I've tried using software on the coraid website but It's not working. So I've contacted the support and they sent me a file to upload on the coraid. It looks like if I upgrade coraid's firmware then I'll be able to use the coraid software on the windows side. That's why I'd need SCP/FTP or any kind of solution to copy a file in the partition that can be read from coraid console command line so I can launch the update command as requested. I hope I was a bit clearer now.

• How to Create Shortcuts to Programs on USB Drives

  If you work on multiple computers, you probably use a USB drive to take your favorite portable software with you. Portable application suites like PortableApps.com, CodySafe, or Lupo PenSuite, each have a main menu providing access to the programs installed into the suite. However, there may be reasons why you need to create shortcuts to programs on your USB drive. You may be using a program that does not integrate into the suite’s main menu. Or, you may not be using an official portable application suite at all, and just placing portable software in a folder on your USB drive. Maybe you prefer using shortcuts on the root of the USB drive, like a portable desktop. Whatever your reason, you can’t just create a shortcut to an application on the USB drive and place it in the root of the drive. The shortcut will always refer to the full path of the application, including the drive letter. Different computers assign different drive letters to USB flash drives, so you would have to change the drive letter for your shortcuts when it changes. You can assign a static drive letter to the USB drive. However, if you would rather not do that, there is a way to create shortcuts to programs on a USB drive using relative paths. Because Windows does not support relative paths in shortcuts, we will show you how to create a “shortcut” on the root of a USB drive by creating a batch (.bat) file and converting it to an executable (.exe) file. • Do support sites like Stack Overflow upset the paid-support open source model?

  In order to stay relevant in the marketplace, I'm researching new business models for my software company. The open source model with paid support seems like a good fit for our product, but I have concerns about whether or not a paid support model is viable in an era where top-notch help is readily available for free on sites like those in the Stack Exchange network. Case in point -- I moved my employees to Ubuntu last year because I didn't want to pay for Win 7 licenses and new hardware (plus, the mono platform was highly attractive). My staff had no Linux experience, but were able to achieve relative competency in about 120 days with the help of AskUbuntu, Stack Overflow, and a few "For Dummies" books. We did employ an Ubuntu consultant for 7 days to provide training and support, but beyond that spent $0.00 on any kind of paid expertise. In regards to my due diligence, I ran a 3 month beta of the freemium-paid-support model with one of our smaller customers, and achieved mediocre results. I'd like to think its because our software is so stable and easy to use that the customer didn't need much paid support, but I suspect that they circumvented the terms of our SLA in the same manner that we did with the move to Ubuntu. Does anyone out there has any thoughts, advice, or experience relevant to the move I'm considering? What worked, what didn't, etc?

• How do you get better working conditions? [closed]

  I work at a business who has a software side and manufacturing side. The software we write is sold as a package along with other hardware that our customers purchase. I basically work in a warehouse. There is one door that seperates the engineers from the warehouse noise. I have asked for noise cancelling walls to be put in. I have asked multiple times over 6 months to be moved up front to one of two vacant sales offices, but they seem reluctant to let an Engineer move into a sales office. In fact, sales are the only ones with windows and they get commission though they make mistakes or overpromise to the customer. So, my question is how can I get better working conditions without necessarily having to leave my current job? It is very hard to work and concentrate. UPDATE I think I can finally close this chapter in my life. I have moved on to a large corporation which follows CMMI religiously and has even started using Agile in many of its projects. Nevertheless, there is organization, respect, and genuine care for the engineers and scientists that work for them. Pierre was right - quitting was the right answer. My life does not nearly have the amount of stress it used to have because I now work for a place that is organized and knows what it wants its engineers to do along with treating them like they should be treated.
