• How to install Ubiquity into a Live CD installation image?

  I am trying a create a small Ubuntu installation ISO image. I am using a tool called Ubuntu-Builder. To make the final ISO as small as possible, I have decided to use Ubuntu Mini Remix. It is a small Live CD without GUI. It does not come with any installer software like Ubiquity. I want to embed an installer software into the ISO image so that user can install it into harddisk. In Ubuntu-Builder, I have tried the following: Install LXDE Desktop, then install Ubiquity. But the final ISO boots into command line. Install OpenBox Desktop, then install Ubiquity. But the final ISO boots into command line. Do not install DE, directly install Ubiquity. But the final ISO still boots into command line. After booting up from ISO, I have checked the software in the OS. It seems that Ubiquity has been installed. But it didn't show up when I boot the ISO image. Anyone knows how to install Ubiquity into a Live CD ISO image? Anyone knows any text mode installer which can replace Ubiquity?

It won’t make you any less bored though. Convert a Row to a Column (or backwards) The first thing you’ll need is a column or a row of information that you want to convert into the opposite. For our example, we’ve got this set of data that we created by using the Auto Fill options in Google Docs. • [MINI HOW-TO] Repair Missing External Hard Drive Database Error in WHS

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • XNA Masking Mayhem

  I'd like to start by mentioning that I'm just an amateur programmer of the past 2 years with no formal training and know very little about maximizing the potential of graphics hardware. I can write shaders and manipulate a multi-layered drawing environment, but I've basically stuck to minimalist pixel shaders. I'm working on putting dynamic point light shadows in my 2d sidescroller, and have had it working to a reasonable degree. Just chucking it in without working on serious optimizations outside of basic culling, I can get 50 lights or so onscreen at once and still hover around 100 fps. The only issue is that I'm on a very high end machine and would like to target the game at as many platforms I can, low and high end. The way I'm doing shadows involves a lot of masking before I can finally draw the light to my light layer. Basically, my technique to achieveing such shadows is as follows. See pics in this album http://imgur.com/a/m2fWw#0 The dark gray represents the background tiles, the light gray represents the foreground tiles, and the yellow represents the shadow-emitting foreground tile. I'll draw the light using a radial gradient and a color of choice I'll then exclude light from the mask by drawing some geometry extending through the tile from my point light. I actually don't mask the light yet at this point, but I'm just illustrating the technique in this image Finally, I'll re-include the foreground layer in my mask, as I only want shadows to collect on the background layer and finally multiply the light with it's mask to the light layer My question is simple - How can I go about reducing the amount of render target switches I need to do to achieve the following: a. Draw mask to exclude shadows from the foreground to it's own target once per frame b. For each light that emits shadows, -Begin light mask as full white -Render shadow geometry as transparent with an opaque blendmode to eliminate shadowed areas from the mask -Render foreground mask back over the light mask to reintroduce light to the foreground c. Multiply light texture with it's individual mask to the main light layer.

• How to get OpenSSH to use ksshaskpass under KDE?

  When using a GNOME desktop on Ubuntu, if I use OpenSSH client to connect to another computer (running from the gnome-terminal), I get a single graphic popup asking for my private key's pass-phrase. After that I no longer need to enter my pass-phrase as it is cached by the SSH agent. Under KDE it doesn't work like that - when I start ssh from konsole, I get a text prompt for my pass-phrase every single time, even though ssh-agent is running. If I run ssh-add from the terminal then I can enter my pass-phrase on the terminal and it will be stored by ssh-agent and I won't get any more pass-phrase prompts, while if I run ssh-add the KRunner graphical command line ("Run" dialog) then I get a graphical prompt with the same behavior. The problem is I have to remember running ssh-add every time I log in to the desktop. How can I get ssh to behave under KDE, the same as it does on GNOME - the first time the pass-phrase is needed, pop up a graphical dialog and store the pass-phrase in the agent. I've installed ksshaskpass, but that didn't change anything.

• How to create a "retro" pixel shader for transformed 2D sprites that maintains pixel fidelity?

  The image below shows two sprites rendered with point sampling on top of a background: The left skull has no rotation/scaling applied to it, so every pixel matches perfectly with the background. The right skull is rotated/scaled, and this results in larger pixels that are no longer axis aligned. How could I develop a pixel shader that would render the transformed sprite on the right with axis aligned pixels of the same size as the rest of the scene? This might be related to how sprite scaling was implemented in old games such as Monkey Island, because that's the effect I'm trying to achieve, but with rotation added. Edit As per kaoD's suggestions, I tried to address the problem as a post-process. The easiest approach was to render to a separate render target first (downsampled to match the desired pixel size) and then upscale it when rendering a second time. It did address my requirements above. First I tried doing it Linear -> Point and the result was this: There's no distortion but the result looks blurred and it loses most of the highlights colors. In my opinion it breaks the retro look I needed. The second time I tried Point -> Point and the result was this: Despite the distortion, I think that might be good enough for my needs, although it does look better as a still image than in motion. To demonstrate, here's a video of the effect, although YouTube filtered the pixels out of it: http://youtu.be/hqokk58KFmI However, I'll leave the question open for a few more days in case someone comes up with a better sampling solution that maintains the crisp look while decreasing the amount of distortion when moving.

• Database Schema Usage

  I have a question regarding the appropriate use of SQL Server database schemas and was hoping that some database gurus might be able to offer some guidance around best practice. Just to give a bit of background, my team has recently shrunk to 2 people and we have just been merged with another 6 person team. My team had set up a SQL Server environment running off a desktop backing up to another desktop (and nightly to the network), whilst the new team has a formal SQL Server environment, running on a dedicated server, with backups and maintenance all handled by a dedicated team. So far it's good news for my team. Now to the query. My team designed all our tables to belong to a 3-letter schema name (e.g. User = USR, General = GEN, Account = ACC) which broadly speaking relate to specific applications, although there is a lot of overlap. My new team has come from an Access background and have implemented their tables within dbo with a 3-letter perfix followed by "_tbl" so the examples above would be dbo.USR_tblTableName, dbo.GEN_tblTableName and dbo.ACC_tblTableName. Further to this, neither my old team nor my new team has gone live with their SQL Servers yet (we're both coincidentally migrating away from Access environments) and the new team have said they're willing to consider adopting our approach if we can explain how this would be beneficial. We are not anticipating handling table updates at schema level, as we will be using application-level logins. Also, with regards to the unwieldiness of the 7-character prefix, I'm not overly concerned myself as we're using LINQ almost exclusively so the tables can simply be renamed in the DMBL (although I know that presents some challenges when we update the DBML). So therefore, given that both teams need to be aligned with one another, can anyone offer any convincing arguments either way?

• Creating a GTK theme, but Qt and Java apps are not affected, and title bar button layout is ugly

  I'm playing with a gtk2 / gtk3 theme which I use in the Mate desktop. Everything is looking well, even gtk3 apps, but I still have 3 important issues: Java apps ignore the theme QT apps ignore the theme I'm using those nice ubuntu 10 title bar buttons, but the problem is, when only the close button appears, the title bar looks ugly. Can I make it so that it shows the two other buttons, but disabled? I don't know how Ubuntu 10 handled this. Here's a screenshot showing the 3 problems (above is a small java app, below is a Qt app): Under my previous desktop environments, Unity and Cinnamon, both apps seemed to be taking the right theme correctly, but I did not use my custom theme yet. Cinnamon is based on gnome-shell by the way, and mate is a gnome2-fork. Please note that the shown java app explicitely tries to load the gtk theme at runtime. By default, java apps don't, but this one has the necessary code, which worked in unity and cinnamon. Any suggestions how I could make my theme better so these problems disappear? • How can I roll back xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common?

  A recent update to Xorg broke my desktop, which now looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/PbBxh.jpg In short, the desktop background is not updating on the secondary display. (And if there is no secondary display, the primary display background stops updating.) Looking into the history, I found that this happened right after upgrading two packages: xserver-xorg-core xserver-common These were upgraded to 1.9.0-0ubuntu7.3. I'd like to downgrade these packages. How do I do that? • Persistent "held broken packages" error

  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop gives the error The following packages have unmet dependencies: netflix-desktop : Depends: wine-browser-installer but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. but dpkg --get-selections | grep hold shows nothing. I'm running 12.04 64-bit. • Focus follows mouse stops working when opening window from launcher and no click to focus

  This is 12.04 default desktop (unity). I set it to focus follows mouse, and changed the menus to be on the window. This worked for a while, then some unknown even, maybe an upgrade maybe some other setting change caused it to stop working. There are many ways for this behavior to start but one reliable one is to bring a window to the foreground/focus with the launcher. Now the focus is stuck on that window and not just the window but the regions within the window so the close, maximize, minimize and menus do not work. I have to use mouse middle and then mouse right and then focus follows mouse is restored for a bit. The exact details of the mouse action aren't clear, sometimes it seems like just mouse middle helps, sometimes just right some times a desperate sequence of clicks :-( I have tried switching to the gnome desktop and it seems to occur less there but it is not eliminated. I have tried switching mice to an old wired USB mouse. I have tried creating a new account and that has not worked. I have observed "split focus" where to scroll button scrolls one one window but the input goes to another. I go trapped recently where my keyboard input went to libre office calc, but I was selecting the search term in the chrome address window. The selection "grayed" but the keyboard input for the search went to libre. Regions in windows have very confused focus. I have to work hard to get focus on for example the close gliph (X) or the minimize gliph (_).

  I upgraded my Hp g6 from ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 yesterday. Now I cannot log into the system using ubuntu/unity But I can still login using i3 windows manager. I checked and found the ubuntu-desktop is broken. I tried to reinstall it, it complained about the dependency issue and broken package. some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: ubuntu-desktop : Depends: ubuntu-session but it is not going to be installed Recommends: empathy but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. when I tried to install ubuntu-session, Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • How To Use AutoFill on a Google Docs Spreadsheet [Quick Tips]

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • .NET Demon 1.0 Released

  Today we're officially releasing version 1.0 of .NET Demon, the Visual Studio Extension Alex Davies and I have been working on for the last 6 months. There have been beta versions available for a while, but we have now released the first "official" version and made it available to purchase. If you haven't yet tried the tool, it's all about reducing the time between when you write a line of code and when you are able to try it out so you don't have to wait: Continuous compilation We use spare CPU cycles on your machine to compile your code in the background when you make changes, so assemblies are up to date whenever you want to run them. Some clever logic means we only recompile code which may have been affected by your changes. Continuous save .NET Demon can perform background saving, so you don't lose any work in case of crashes or power failures, and are less likely to forget to commit changed files. Continuous testing (Experimental) The testing tool in .NET Demon watches which code you change in your solution, and automatically reruns tests which are impacted, so you learn about any breaking changes as quickly as possible. It also gives you inline test coverage information inside Visual Studio. Continuous testing is still experimental - it will work fine in many cases, but we know it's not yet perfect. Releasing version 1.0 doesn't mean we're pausing development or pushing out improvements. • Starcraft II on Wine - Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this might seem like a repeat question, but I've literally looked over 100 threads on how to get SC2 to work on ubuntu 12.04 through wine and none have worked. I downloaded wine new today, and inserted my purchased SC2 disk. When I try to open the installer (installer.exe) with wine, an error appear saying: "No installer data could be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support." I searched for solutions to mediate this issue and was directed to the following source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435314 . I followed directions through until I got to ls I tried various combinations of (ls installer.exe, ls'/home/rothic/Desktop/Installer.exe, etc.) All come back with "no such file or directory". Im not sure what to do, the next step would be to replace the "starcraft_installer" with the starcraft installer file, which Im not sure how to do (very new to linux). I tried WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_starcraft/ wine starcraft_installer and it says "wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\starcraft_installer.exe" despite it being on the desktop as advised. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

• Can web apps allow fast data-typists to "type-ahead"?

  In some data entry contexts, I've seen data typists, type really fast and know so well the app they use, and have a mechanic quality in their work so that they can "type ahead", ie continue typing and "tab-bing" and "enter-ing" faster than the display updates, so that in many occasions they are typing in the data for the next form before it draws itself. Then when this next entry form appears, their keystrokes fill the text boxes and they continue typing, selecting etc. In contexts like this, this speed is desirable, since this persons are really productive. I think this "type ahead of time" is only possible in desktop apps, but I may be wrong. My question is whether this way of handling the keyboard buffer (which in desktop apps require no extra programming) is achievable in web apps, or is this impossible because of the way web apps work, handle sessions, etc (network latency and the overhead of generating new web pages ) ? Edit: By "type ahead" I mean "keyboard type ahead" (typing faster than the next entry form can load), not suggets-as-you-type-like-google type ahead. Typeahead is a feature of computers and software (and some typewriters) that enables users to continue typing regardless of program or computer operation—the user may type in whatever speed he or she desires, and if the receiving software is busy at the time it will be called to handle this later. Often this means that keystrokes entered will not be displayed on the screen immediately. This programming technique for handling user what is known as a keyboard buffer.

• Frequent grub rescue error: unknown filesystem

  It's really frustrating. Three week's back story: I faced the following error on ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop, error : unknown filesystem grub rescue> I tried many solutions online apart from 1 and 2 and eventually I could not boot my system at all. Trying those solutions could not completely fix it and then I had to face initramfs(could not remember exact error). As I could not fix, a week back I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop and after a week i.e, now, I got the same grub rescue> error. Could anybody tell me what's the reason behind this error?. Is there any problem with the Ubuntu or it's a problem at my side due to some reason?. My machine description: I have two hard disks, windows is installed on one hard disk and on another it's Ubuntu. I installed the operating systems(vista, ubuntu) such a way one is not known to another, I mean to say, I'll unplug one hard disk and install the Ubuntu and similarly I'll unplug the ubuntu hard disk, installed the vista on another hard disk, generally I do(I actually don't want to run into grub/boot.ini issues installing OSs connecting both the hard disks). When ever I power on the computer windows will boot by default, and I'll generally boot to ubuntu by pressing F8 and selecting the ubuntu hard disk. Any help is greatly appreciated!. Thank you!
