• Can't restore HDD using multiple programs

  Please refer to my original question about this issue. I tried GetDataBack and it doesn't seem to scan or do anything. I chose the default settings from the first screen and then on step 1 I chose my HDD that's damaged. In step 2, nothing happens. It doesn't scan or do anythong, and on step 3 it doesn't display any of my files. I have also tried TestDisk and what happens in TestDisk is that when I try to fix and rebuild the MFT, it says this: MFT and MFT mirror are bad. Failed to repair them. Here is the status of that HDD under Testdrive: I also tried this app and got no results when I tried to recover the files. I keep getting this error: Last but not least, I tried Recuva and that simply says it's unable to read the MFT. Any suggestions? I have tried various apps already and none of them seems to work.

• SQL Alter database failed - being used by checkpoint process

  Hi, On my SQL server 2008, i have a SQL agent job to restore a database on nightly basis. Procedure: find latest backup on other server Kill all conenction to the destination database Restore destination database with replace, recovery It failed last weekend because the database was being used by a system process (spid 11 checkpoint). since I couldnt kill the system process, I fixed this by restarting sql server. It failed this weekend as well with same error (checkpint process in this database as from sp_who) and when I run: SELECT session_id,request_id,command,status,start_time FROM sys.dm_exec_requests WHERE session_id = 11 It shows: 11 0 CHECKPOINT background 2010-04-06 10:17:49.103 I cant restart the server every time it fails. Can anyone please help me in fixing this? Thanks in advance Manjot

• deleting old unused images

  As we move on with our content-based websites, lots of images get dumped in our images folder, but we rarely come across self-committed monkyes that delete their files once they do not need it, which means, we end up with a huge list of images in one folder, and it is very tricky to clean it up. My question is (and i dont know if this is the right website to ask it), is there a tool that allows me to find out if an image has been requested by web in the last (n) months? my other general question is, how do you do it? how do you take control of your images folders? what policy do you enforce on developers to clean up? what measures do you take in order to decide what goes and what stays if you end up with an out-of-control situation? my suggestion was to rename the images folder, create a new one, copy the basic ones and wait for someone to complain about a broken image! :) i find this to be the most efficient.

I had to install it manually in synaptic (got the hint in the meantime from another forum), see here: Wikipedia says: "Tkinter is a Python binding to the Tk GUI toolkit. It is the standard Python interface to the Tk GUI toolkit1 and is Python's de facto standard GUI,2 and is included with the standard Windows and Mac OS X install of Python." - Not good, that it isn't included in Ubuntu as well. • Project Corndog: Viva el caliente perro!

  During one of my last semesters in college we were required to take a class call Computer Graphics which tried (quite unsuccessfully) to teach us a combination of mathematics, OpenGL, and 3D rendering techniques.  The class itself was horrible, but one little gem of an idea came out of it.  See, the final project in the class was to team up and create some kind of demo or game using techniques we learned in class.  My friend Paul and I teamed up and developed a top down shooter that, given the stringent timeline, was much less of a game and much more of 3D objects floating around a screen. The idea itself however I found clever and unique and decided it was time to spend some time developing a proper version of our idea.  Project Corndog as it is tentatively named, pits you as a freshly fried corndog who broke free from the shackles of fair food slavery in a quest to escape the state fair you were born in.  Obviously it's quite a serious game with undertones of racial prejudice, immoral practices, and cheap food sold at high prices. The game itself is a top down shooter in the style of 1942 (NES).  As a delicious corndog you will have to fight through numerous enemies including hungry babies, carnies, and the corndog serial-killer himself the corndog eating champion!  Other more engaging and frighteningly realistic enemies await as the only thing between you and freedom. Project Corndog is being developed in Visual Studio 2008 with XNA Game Studio 3.1.  It is currently being hosted on Google code and will be made available as an open source engine in the coming months.

• Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.

• Chaotic behavior of a dead pixel on my iMac 24"

  Since I bought my iMac last year, I have a white pixel on the left of my screen. I'm ok with that, one pixel is not much and I know about dead pixels policies. My problem is about understanding this "dead" pixel. But this pixel has a strange behavior. At first, it seems to be always white, but it is actually working ok under certain conditions: the mouse pointer a contextual menu Dock icons a QuickLooks video played in fullscreen other spaces than "1" The "QuickLooks fullscreen video" and "other spaces" are the one that disturb me the most. In these modes, my pixel is working fine, so it must be a software problem since my pixel is working correctly in those modes. Any ideas?

• Blackberry Enterprise Server - Not running?

  My BlackBerry enterprise server recently stopped forwarding messages to devices. In fact, the server claims that the last time it communicated with all the devices associated with it, was on Thursday night (4 nights ago.) The catch is this, the Exchange server is running properly (or as properly as Exchange can run :) ) The SQL server seems to be running properly. And the Blackberry Enterprise server seems to be running correctly. Other than the fact that the server has not communicated with any device since Thursday, and the fact that I am not getting messages, there appears to be nothing wrong. How do I get these message to be forwarded to devices again? I have restarted the BES services in the order suggested by the BlackBerry folks to no avail.

At a very high level, LocalDB has the following key properties: LocalDB uses the same sqlservr.exe as the regular SQL Express and other editions of SQL Server. The application is using the same client-side providers (ADO.NET, ODBC, PDO and others) to connect to it and operates on data using the same T-SQL language as provided by SQL Express. LocalDB is installed once on a machine (per major SQL Server version). Multiple applications can start multiple LocalDB processes, but they are all started from the same sqlservr.exe executable file from the same disk location. LocalDB doesn't create any database services; LocalDB processes are started and stopped automatically when needed. The application is just connecting to "Data Source=(localdb)\v11.0" and LocalDB process is started as a child process of the application. A few minutes after the last connection to this process is closed the process shuts down. LocalDB connections support AttachDbFileName property, which allows developers to specify a database file location. LocalDB will attach the specified database file and the connection will be made to it.

• Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging. • Diagram that could explain a state machine's code?

  We have a lot of concepts in making diagrams like UML and flowcharting or just making up whatever boxes-and-arrows combination works at the time, but I'm looking at doing a visual diagram on something that's actually really complex. State machines like those that parse HTML or regular expressions tend to be very long and complicated bits of code. For example, this is the stateLoop for FireFox 9 beta. It's actually generated by another file, but this is the code that runs. How can I diagram something with the complexity of this in a way that explains flow of the code without taking it to a level where I draw every single line-of-code into it's own box on a flowchart? I don't want to draw "Invoke loop, then return" but I don't want to explain every last detail. What kind of graph is suitable to do this? Is there already something out there similar to this? Just an example of how to do this without going overboard in complexity or too-high-level is really what I want. If you don't feel like looking at the code, basically it's 70 different state flags that could occur, inside an infinite loop that exists to a label based on some conditions, each flag has it's own infinite loop that exists to a label somewhere, and each of those loops has checks for different types of chars, which then runs off into various other methods.

• Something eating space on OS drive

  I am facing low disk space issue from last few days. I checked with Restore,System Volume Information, $Recycled folders. But there is nothing which is occupying space. I had scanned my system for virus too. Total size of C: is 18 GB. But when I select all folders inside C: and query for used space, it shows 20+ gb space is used. I vacate space some how by deleting temp files, program's cache files, disk clean up etc up to (3 gb). And I ensured that no cache/temp files are recreated who can use the space again. Even after cleaning so much data, I am again facing low disk space issue. Something is eating disk space within 15-20 mins.

• Pub banter - content strategy at the ballot box?

  Last night, I was challenged to explain (and defend) content strategy. Three sheets to the wind after a pub quiz, this is no simple task, but I hope I acquitted myself passably. I say "hope" because there was a really interesting question I couldn't answer to my own satisfaction. I wonder if any of you folks out there in the ethereal internet hive-mind can help me out? A friend - a rather concrete thinker who mathematically models complex biological systems for a living - pointed out that my examples were largely routed in business-to-business web sales and support. He challenged me with: Say you've got a political website, so your goal is to have somebody read it and vote for you - how do you measure the effectiveness of that content? Well, you would. umm. Oh dear. I guess what we're talking about here, to yank it back to my present comfort zone, is a sales process where your point of conversion is off the site. The political example is perhaps a little below the belt, since what you can and can't do, and what data you can and can't collect is so restricted. You can't throw up a "How did you hear about this election?" questionnaire in the polling booth. Exit polls don't pull in your browsing history and site session information. Not everyone fatuously tweets and geo-tags each moment of their lives. Oh, and folks lie. The business example might be easier to attack. You could have, say, a site for a farm shop that only did over the counter sales. Either way, it's tricky. I fell back on some of the work I've done usability testing and benchmarking documentation, and suggested similar, quick and dirty, small sample qualitative UX trials. I'm not wholly sure that was right. Any thoughts? How might we measure and curate for this kind of discontinuous conversion?

• How to forward UDP Wake-on-Lan port to broadcast IP with IPTABLES?

  I'm trying to setup Wake-on-Lan for some of the LAN computers at home and it seems that I need to open a UDP port (7 or 9 being the most common) and forward all requests to the broadcast IP, which in my case is 192.168.1.255. The problem is that my router does not allow me to forward anything to the broadcast IP. I can connect to my router through telnet and it seems this router uses IPTABLES, but I don't know much about it or how to is. Can someone help me out with the proper iptables commands to do what I want? Also, in case it doesn't work, the commands to put everything back would be nice too. One last thing, rebooting the router will keep those manually added iptables entries or I would need to run them every time?

• Updating drivers on a Lenovo T410

  I have a few question regarding updating the drivers on my Lenovo T410. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed with a 32 bit(X86) sub directory. I'm not that familiar with updating drivers on 64bit Windows so I'm wondering if I should install both 32/64 bit driver versions instead of just 64 bit. Another question I have is Lenovo specific. On the support page for my device, there is a list of Windows updates available dating back to 2009, however I do have ThinkVantage update manager installed and it checks for Windows updates weekly. Should I install all of the Windows specific updates, or can I rely on update manager? My last question is if I should install the drivers for the T410 in any specific order? Any help is much appreciated as I haven't been able to find answers to these specific questions here, or by googling. Thanks in advance

• Boot failure after update and system crash 11.10

  I'm using: Dell XPS M1330 laptop, Ubuntu 11.10 32bits, single boot (only Linux OS), Virtualbox (with Windows XP on virtual machine). System crashed while working with a very heavy image on GIMP (and Virtualbox was on). During the same session, I made an automatic system update, but don't know what was exactly updated. After the crash the system doesn't boot. Always freezes on terminal screen but at different stages, ""Starting CUPS printing spooler/server", "Checking battery state", "mountall: plymouth command failed", etc. Sometimes indicates [failed] in some of the processes and sometimes they're all [ok]. Did a Boot info summary with boot-repair and gave me this report http://paste.ubuntu.com/1050743/ This is not a new install, have been using it for almost 6 months...though since last month it couldn't halt..it started shutting down and stopped at black screen with fan on and on/off light still on (I used to finish the shutdown process by forcing halt with a long-press of the power button). I don't know if these has anything to do with the boot failure. Is there anyway I can solve this issue (the boot failure) or make some sort of system check to find out what is the cause of the problem? • Unity custom shaders and z-fighting

  I've just readed a chapter of Unity iOS Essential by Robert Wiebe. It shows a solution for handling z-figthing problem occuring while rendering a street on a plane with the same y offset. Basically it modified Normal-Diffuse shader provided by Unity, specifing the (texture?) offset in -1, -1. I don't know CG nor GLSL, but I've a little bit of experience with HLSL. Anyway I can't figure out what exactly is going on. Could anyone explain me what exactly Offset directly does, and how is solves z-fighting problems?

• Acer aspire one d270 can not set brightness

  I hope you can help me figure out how to set the brightness at my netbook. Following problem appears since I installed ubuntu 11.10 on my acer: I am not able to adjust the brightness by FN Keys nor manually at "systemsettings-display". After searching with google for a while, I found a way via the terminal to adjust it with the folloqing command: "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=7f" ( from 00-9f). That was a major breakthrough for me as I am still new to Linux OS. But still seeking a way to get the FN keys for brightness to work, I kept searching until I found "askubuntu.com". I read through various Questions by other acer users and tried there solutions, but unfortunately none worked out for me. From this thread: fn + arrow keys don't adjust actual brightness on an Acer Aspire 5740 "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf". This command did not work because the file was not found. I also used nano instead of gedit, but the file was empty( I think it just created the file since it did not exist). These commands which i found gave me a boot loop and I had to repair ubuntu: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub From this post Screen Brightness not adjustable for Acer Aspire S3: I tried the solution from the last post, but it did not work either. Does anyone know what I could try? I would appreciate it, if someone could help me out with this. • Stop external USB keyboard repeating key presses on Vista.

  We have an infuriating problem with a (Vista/Dell) laptop. When an external (Logitech) USB keyboard is attached to it, it regularly starts repeating key presses. When the user recently deleted an Outlook message, it deleted them all! When typing a message, suddenly it will start repeating the last keypress about 30 times (it varies). It's not a mechanical issue. We've switched the keyboard out four times. Even tried a brand new one one. Every time it's the same. Also, the keyboard works fine on other machines. The problem doesn't arise when the laptop's own keyboard is used - even if the external USB keyboard is still attached. I'm stumped? Any ideas. Not using an external keyboard isn't an option due to our health and safety policy (...don't ask...).

  SonicAgile, our free Agile Project Management Tool, now integrates with Dropbox. You can upload files such as logos, videos, and documentation, and associate the files with stories and epics. Before you can take advantage of this new feature, you need to get a Dropbox account. You can get a free Dropbox account that contains up to 2 Gigabytes of data. See the pricing here: https://www.dropbox.com/pricing Connecting with Dropbox You only need to connect your SonicAgile project to Dropbox once. Follow these steps: Login/Register at http://SonicAgile.com Click the Settings link to navigate to Project Settings. Select the Files tab (the last tab). Click the connect link to connect to Dropbox. After you complete these steps, a new folder is created in your Dropbox at Apps\SonicAgile. All of your SonicAgile files are stored here. Uploading Files to SonicAgile After your SonicAgile project is connected to Dropbox, a new Files tab appears for every story. You can upload files under the Files tab by clicking the upload file link. When files are uploaded, the files are stored on your Dropbox under the Apps\SonicAgile folder. Be aware that anyone who is a member of your project – all of your team members – can upload, delete, and view any Dropbox files associated with any story in your project. Everyone in your project should have access to all of the information needed to complete the project successfully.  This is the Agile way of doing things. • SQL Bits X – Temporal Snapshot Fact Table Session Slide & Demos

  Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success.
