• Should I work for free while applying for a job?

  An employer usually asks a candidate to do a small project at home ("homework") as a part of applying for a job. Last time I applied for a job (as a web developer), there were aproximately 10 applicants who were all given different tasks. Despite the fact that there was only one vacancy, the company used the work of all of the candidates in one of its projects. Actually, it is quite reasonable for a company to create these "vacancies" just to make people work for free - I estimate, that aproximately 2 weeks of programmer's work was saved with all of the job applications that company had on one vacancy. Is this a common practice and how can you protect yourself from working for free in the future? Have you seen this during your career?

• How do you configure mupen64plus controls?

  I installed mupen64plus from the repositories using Synaptic. I like the emulator (for the most part, a couple of graphics glitches on TLOZ Ocarina of Time), especially its performance on my old machine, but I cannot figure out how to configure the controls for myself. I tried looking at Google Code's guide here but I can't find the file I need to edit and the link with the key ids isn't working, so even if I could find the file I wouldn't be able to change anything. So what I need is a resource with the key ids and where to find the file I need to edit. I am running Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit. 2GB RAM, Intel CORE 2 DUO @ 2.00GHz

• All tweak settings not saving?

  I am running Ubuntu GNOME 14.04. After the last 2 updates, all settings in the Tweak menu are no saving. It will also not switch to the Gnome Dark theme at all. This includes all Startup Application changes as well as any changes to Extension settings. I'm not sure if I need to include any sort of log records or anything like that, so if you need any more information please ask. I've noticed the default fonts seem to be different. I don't remember that being part of the theme settings. It's almost like I'm running in Safe Mode.

• Why is ComboBoxText giving me a "no attribute" error?

  I'm trying to add a text Combo Box into my app. I've created in and populated the list but when I I try to print out the active text I get an error. Here's the part of the code in question: def on_netif_changed(self, widget): netif = widget.gtk_combo_box_text_get_active_text() print netif And the error I get: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/boywithaxe/Developer/Quickly/broadcast/broadcast/BroadcastWindow.py", line 44, in on_netif_changed netif = widget.gtk_combo_box_text_get_active_text() AttributeError: 'ComboBoxText' object has no attribute 'gtk_combo_box_text_get_active_text' I'm a bit at a loss here, I've no problem betting text from text boxes, but this seems a completely different issue. I tried RTFMing but came up short. I would appreciate any suggestions.

• Is it possible to modify a video codec + distribute it?

  this is my first question on this particular stackexchange node, not sure if it's the most appropriate place for this question (if not, guidance to the appropriate node would be appreciated). the abstract: I'm interested in modifying existing video codecs and distributing my modded codecs in such a way as to make them easily added to a users codec library... for example to be added to their mpeg streamclip, ffmpeg etc. some details: I've had some experience modifying codecs by hacking ffmpeg source files and compiling my hacked code (so that for ex: my version of ffmpeg has a very different h.263 than yours). I'm interested now in taking these modified codecs and somehow making them easily distributable, so others could "add them" to their "libraries." Also, I realize there are some tricky rights/patent issues here, this is in part my motivation.   Basically I want to develop a Address lookup(part of my project) using C# (and I can use SQL if necessary). I have a very large text file which have all the UK address and postcodes. Addresses needs to be looked up from this text file. For example, as soon as a user type in the first letter of the postcode it should list all the postcodes starting with that letter and as they type in further, the list should narrow down. Could you guys please how I can do this search very fast and list the results in a efficient way. If you guys know any methods and technologies pls do advice.

  I'm attempting too develop a 3rd party application to make it easy to import 3d model part's into my mod for skyrim the plan was to have a fileviewer and preview window of the nif model but since , I don't know what the NIF file format actually is or where to get the vertex data from it or the hole nine yards of parsing a text file in detail I'm at a lost what to do. • Top Down bounds of vision

  Obviously in a first person view point the player sees only what's in front of them (with the exception of radars and rearview mirrors, etc). My game has a top down perspective, but I still want to limit what the character sees based on their facing. I've already worked out having objects obstruct vision, but there are two other factors that I worry would be disorienting and want to do right. I want the player to have reduced peripheral vision and very little view behind them. The assumption is he can turn his head and so see fairly well out to the sides, but hardly at all behind without turning the whole body. How do I make it clear you are not seeing behind you? I want the map to turn so the player is always facing up. Part of the game is to experience kind of a maze and the player should be able to lose track of North. How can I turn the map rather than the player avatar without causing confusion?

  I think I am going to use Google spreadsheets and an embedded form. I see that it is possible to pre-populate the fields with URL parameters. So I think I just need a way to redirect with the correct data from a database when a user goes to their Personalized URL. I have no idea how to do the second part. • Android Dynamic 2D Map

  My problem is, I want to create a 2D tiled map. Yes, I know it's been asked a lot. I've seen answers that propose the use of tiled however it only allows (or so it seems to me) to generate static maps that do not change once generated. And I need a large empty uniform space of empty tiles, upon which players may place various buildings (some spanning more than one tile and logically being the same one). How to approach this in Android? Do I make some kind of TableLayout, use arbitrarly large amount of rows and imageviews (with my emptyTile), than somehow work event-based changing of image ids from there? I'd think that only a portion of that map should be visible at a time, but I don't see how scrolling around could be the part of that structure.

• Is there a downside of running too many Symfony applications for 1 website?

  Recently I got access to a Symfony 1.2 project which is for just 1 website, but with too many applications. In the past, I have developed websites but with not more than 2 or 3 applications. The cross-application links are achieved by passing the full URL to the 'href' attribute. Since the site is still working absolutely fine, my question is will having too many front controllers (approximately 25-30) hamper the performance of the website? Rewriting the interfaces and/or the concrete implementation is not normally an option as it will be provided by a third party library.

  Whenever I'm plugging in my external monitor into my notebook and changing the screen resolution to the maximum state, the desktop will get broken in a way: A third of the whole desktop space is not visible at all.
