• Updating query results

  Within a DDD and CQRS context, a query result is displayed as table rows. Whenever new rows are inserted or deleted, their positions must be calculated by comparing the previous query result with the most recent one. This is needed to visualize with an animation new or deleted rows. The model of my view contains an array of the displayed query results. But I need a place to compare its contents against the latest query. Right now I consider my model view part of my application layer, but the comparison of two query result sets seems something that must be done within the domain layer. Which component should cache a query result and which one compare them? Are view models (and their cached contents) supposed to be in the application layer?

• DirectCompute information

  I've been trying to make use of the GPU as part of a project of mine. I've looked into both CUDA and OpenCL, but the lack of information showing you how to introduce these into a project is shocking. Even their dedicated forum groups are dead. So now, I'm looking into DirectCompute. From what I can tell, it's simply a new type of shader file that makes use of HLSL. My question is this, does my program (aside from being DirectX 10 / 11 ) need its structure changed? I mean, is it simply a case of creating the CS file, setting in the project like I would any other shader, and watch the magic happen? Any information on this would be appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 wallpaper problem when using two monitors

  I am using two monitors, the main resolution is 1920x1080 and the secondary is 1440x900. Everything seems to work fine (with default drivers, fglrx crashes bad), besides windows opening in the wrong monitor (even when the main is set correctly), but now what I am trying to fix is the wallpaper problem, here's an image to explain it easier: http://i.imgur.com/msLRR.jpg It also happens with gradients. The secondary monitor is physically aligned like in the image, lower than the other, the wallpaper on the main screen seems to keep the size of the lower resolution, and then it start at the correct resolution the last part at right. Any way to fix this? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome-Shell 3.4.1, the vga is a Radeon HD 6950 UPDATE I went to gnome-tweak-tool and disabled "Have file manager handle the desktop", now it looks ok on both monitors, but I can't have icons on my desktop, so I am still interested in solving it. UPDATE2 Disabling "Have file manager handle the desktop", in gnome-tweak-tool and then re-enabling it seems to work, but has to be done every time you turn on the PC.

• How to get out of supporting deadend sales pitches?

  As part of being a programmer, you often are asked to provide estimates/ make slideware / do technical demos for Sales teams to present to end-clients. Sometimes we go along for the 'technical' discussions or 'strategic capability planning' or some similar mumbo-jumbo. Sometimes, you kind of know which ones are totally going to fail and are not worth pursuing but the Sales guys present fake optimism and extract 'few more slides' out of you or the 'last conference call'. These don't lead to anywhere and are just a waste of time from other tasks for the week. My question is how do you get out of these situations without coming across as non-cooperative. Updated after Kate Gregory's answer: The problem is related to projects we know are doomed (from the technical feedback we've received) But Sales ain't convinced since they've just had a call higher up the management chain - so it's definitely going ahead !

In this talk, I discussed a Master/Detail application that runs on Android 2.2 devices and forward. I used the Actionbar compat Android library to allow the older devices to have an actionbar. I also used a SQLite database for my data.   Recently, our biggest product failed majorly because we'd only used outsourced labor to do it, and they never tested anything, etc. Finally, our CEO decided that the US team should learn the code and fix it up. (Not a total rewrite, but lots of formatting/style changes, refactoring, etc). However, he knows next to nothing about programming (thankfully, he admits it). He had been grooming me to take on the project manager position, but I had to go back to college. Now he gave it to another programmer who is naive and inexperienced. I don't feel the naive programmer will do nearly as well. The CEO's reasoning is that the naive programmer can work full time and I can only do part time, so the less senior programmer could put more work into it. How can I convince him that 15 hours of my time is worth more than the other guy's 40?

  Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic! • Cost of Web Server that hosted and delivered text only

  We are developing an application that needs a web server to interact with the two (or more) entities involved. They will not ever see anything on the web, but the server is required for the transfer of data between them. It's sort of a holding point. Now, the only thing the server is going to be holding is textual data. The two entities are going to be doing the work with the data. I was wondering what the cost of this type of server would be. Since it would be JUST a database with no front end, would it make sense to employ a service through Amazon or Google that just holds data for me to access instead of buying a server and making my own database? The amount of data can grow very large however it's only text, and all data over a day old will be deleted for the most part every day. Thanks!

• What is a good design pattern and terminology for decoupling output?

  I have a program where I want to save some data record. And I want the output type to be flexible such that I could save the data record to a text file, xml file, database, push to a webservice. My take on it would be to create an interface such as DataStore with a Save() method, and the concrete subclasses such as TextFileDataStore, DatabaseDataStore, etc. What is the proper name/terminology for this type of pattern (I'm using the term "DataStore", log4net names things "appenders", .net they talk about "providers" and "persistence")? I want to come up with good class names (and method names) that fit with a convention if there is one. can you point me to a decent example, preferably in C#, C++, or java? Update Managed to find this stack overflow question, Object persistence terminology: 'repository' vs. 'store' vs. 'context' vs. 'retriever' vs. (…), which captures the terminology part of my question pretty well although there's not a decent answer yet.

• Using an external hard drive as a server and be able to connect via wifi [on hold]

  OK, so i have an old external HDD(seagate 1tb) and a windows computer just in case but im trying to set it up as a server for my home at the moment but if everything goes right i want to transfer it to being a database hub for the business i work for that way i can have more then one register at a time on the same basic database. The thing is im new to the whole server part along with im not well versed with ubuntu either so what im getting at is if i can get it setup, can i connect it on ubuntu and run a linux based Point of sales program but have multiple linked to the single server? i may be able to do it via the router, i think its a belkin n600 with usb port but at this moment i dont know what it is since im not home. i just need information if this is possible and if so, a guide would be appreciated.

• What failure can kill a long running IRC client? [closed]

  I have an IRC bot that I built in PHP using sockets that attempts to run forever and (if disconnected) reconnects again. I have it listening to several channels. Apparently it's fairly resilient, because it can run for several days before the process ends and CRON has to start it up again. However, based on the fact the process ends I'm assuming there are other conditions I'm not accounting for that are causing problems. I have nothing in my error logs giving me a hint. In addition, sometimes the process will continue running - but I notice it's no longer present in any of the channels on the IRC server which makes me think it violated some part of the protocol. I have logic setup to handle: reply to PING's correctly reconnect on disconnect (and reconnect to channels) respond to private messages (so someone doesn't ban it) prevent memory leaks What other failure could be killing my long-running IRC client?

• Android Loading Screen: How do I go about using a stack to load elements, and the option of incrementing the size counter?

  I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  ...in percentage. For example 60/40 or 90/10 or 100/0. My hypothesis is that the bigger the proportion of time you spend thinking the smaller your code can be as a result (and the less time will be needed to write it down). Think more, write less, in other words. Do you think it is true? As a side note, I think in typical software companies thinking is not part of the culture anyway: you are usually supposed to be sitting there at your computer typing something. You will almost definitely be noticed by your managers if you wander about with a blank look thinking over your next steps with your code. Too bad.

• why my system gets frozen?

  Is now something like 2 weeks since my system gets frozen while browsing the web, using apps, watching videos on web sites, basically using any part of my netbook, even when i'm only using one program (like the web browser) this happens. Is so frozen, that the only option i have left to do is to PRESS and hold the power button, nothing else works; I have seeing an error message telling me about a "compiz" error, but not all the times, and this happens every day, some times 2 or 3 times, during the same day. Why does this happens? how can i fix it? please help. Just to let you know i have my system up to date on 12.04 32 bits version, working on an Acer aspire AOD257, 1 Gb RAM, Intel® Atom™ CPU N570 @ 1.66GHz × 4 .

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention. En effet, Microsoft, Google et Facebook sont toutes trois très importantes, pour ne pas dire colossales, et elles sont toutes apparues comme innovantes à leur création. A leurs débuts, elles étaient nettement moins imposantes et les investisseurs hésitaient même à y investir. C'est un peu le cas de Facebook aujourd'hui, la firme surévaluée à outrance. Tous en veulent leur part, mais peu sont sûr de ce que cela va leur rapporter.
