• Can a large transaction log cause cpu hikes to occur

  Hello all, I have a client with a very large database on Sql Server 2005. The total space allocated to the db is 15Gb with roughly 5Gb to the db and 10 Gb to the transaction log. Just recently a web application that is connecting to that db is timing out. I have traced the actions on the web page and examined the queries that execute whilst these web operation are performed. There is nothing untoward in the execution plan. The query itself used multiple joins but completes very quickly. However, the db server's CPU hikes to 100% for a few seconds. The issue occurs when several simultaneous users are working on the system (when I say multiple .. read about 5). Under this timeouts start to occur. I suppose my question is, can a large transaction log cause issues with CPU performance? There is about 12Gb of free space on the disk currently. The configuration is a little out of my hands but the db and log are both on the same physical disk. I appreciate that the log file is massive and needs attending to, but I'm just looking for a heads up as to whether this may cause CPU spikes (ie trying to find the correlation). • MSBuild Working with ItemGroup and EXEC Command

  I created the ItemGroup shown in the code snippet. I need to iterate through this ItemGroup and run the EXEC command - also shown in the code snippet. I cannot seem to get it to work. The code returns the error shown below (note - the Message is written 2 times, which is correct), but the EXEC Command is not running correctly. The value is not being set; therefore the EXEC is not executing at all. I need the EXEC to execute twice or by however sections I define in the ItemGroup. • Why doesn't my Unity DependencyResolver work on shared hosting but works locally?

  I'm trying to deploy ASP.NET MVC 3 application wich uses Unity as a IoC container. Application works fine on local server, but when deployed it throws an exception: No parameterless constructor defined for this object. And this is thrown for a controller that should get some repository injected by my Unity DependencyResolver. I've installed Unity with NuGet so it should be referenced directly, and I've checked that it gets copied to bin folder. I can insert the "noScript" code that reCaptcha gives us, but it doesn't work either, because it can spot that the browser allow javascript but I use noScript. Any suggestions? (I know I put my public reCaptcha key into the code, but it is just for testing purposes, and you could get it from my html or javascript code anyway)

• JQuery Deferred - Adding to the Deferred contract

  I'm trying to add another asynchronous call to the contract of an existing Deferred before its state is set to success. I want Call 1 and Call 3 to be executed in parallel. Once all 3 calls are complete, I want the All Done code to execute. My understanding is that Deferred.pipe() is supposed to chain another asynchronous call to the given deferred, but in practice, I always get Call 2 completing after All Done. Does anyone know how to get jQuery's Deferred to do what I want? Hopefully the solution doesn't involve ripping the code apart into chunks any further. Thanks for any help.

As I need to store the delegate that is called on EndExecute somewhere I created a dictionary. I'm unsure about using WaitHandles as keys though, but that seems to be the only safe choice. Does this approach make sense? Are WaitHandles unique or could I have two equal ones? Or should I instead use the State (and wrap any user provided state into my own State value)? Just to add, the class itself is non-generic, only the Begin/EndExecute methods are generic.

I have a workaround where I have separate triggers (and commands) for the Checked and Unchecked and use a RelayCommand instead of RelayCommand<bool>. • twisted deferred/callbacks and asynchronous execution

  hey guys, quick question about twisted and python... im trying to figure out how can i make my code more asynchronous using twisted and ive come to sort of a dead end, if a function of mine returns a deferred object, then i add a list of callbacks, the first callback will be called after the deferred function provides some result through deferred_obj.callback, then, in the chain of callbacks, the first callback will do something with the data and call the second callback and etc. however chained callbacks will not be considered asynchronous because they're chained and the event loop will keep firing each one of them concurrently until there is no more, right? however, if i have a deferred object, and i attach as its callback the deferred_obj.callback as in d.addCallback(deferred_obj.callback) then this will be considered asynchronous, because the deferred_obj is waiting for the data, and then the method that will pass the data is waiting on data as well, however once i d.callback 'd' object processes the data then it call deferred_obj.callback however since this object is deferred, unlike the case of chained callbacks, it will execute asynchronously... correct? meaning chained callbacks are NOT asynchronous while chained deferreds are, correct? thank you PS: assuming all of my code is non-blocking

  I have a JFrame which has 3 JPanels in GridBagLayout.. Now, when I minimize a windows, after a certain limit, the third JPanel tends to disappear. I tried setting minimizing size of JFrame using setMinimumSize(new Dimension(int,int)) but no success. The windows can still be minimized. So, I actually want to make a threshhold, that my window cannot be minimized after a certain limit. How can I do so? • How do I find the object with the oldest updated_at column in RJS?

  Hello, I'm trying to remove the object with the oldest updated_at value when the rjs is executed. page.insert_html :top, :messages, :partial => @message page[@message].visual_effect :grow page[:message_form].reset Message.old_messages.each do |m| page.remove(m.id) end page.delay(1) do page.select('.message').last.visual_effect :fade end I'm using .last in there right now, but I have a periodically_call_remote in the view that continually updates and runs the rjs above. The line: page.select('.message').last.visual_effect :fade seems to only execute the first time because after the message that is "last" fades away there's nothing recognized as "last" anymore so I figure instead of calling .last I could find the object that has the oldest updated_at time stamp and just remove that instead. I'm thinking that I probably cannot do this using page.select since it only calls on css elements. And therefore I probably don't have access to the updated_at values in the Message model. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to accomplish removing the oldest message with rjs? The messages are already automatically removed in the model as new messages are created. But I want them to fade automatically when the RJS refreshes the element.

• MS Access 2003 - Save button enabling on form open on different tabs

  I have a tab control on a form, and a couple different tabs have save buttons on them. This further complicates things because I can't just use the compiler services as it would result in continued memory usage growth. I can't use a new AppDomain per each "Configuration" loop level because some of the references I need to pass cannot be marshalled. Any suggestions?

• Build number increment not reflected in AssemblyVersion

  I've browsed through some of the discussion on auto-incrementing build numbers, but in the impatience of youth decided to roll my own and re-invent the wheel. I know there are probably better ways to go about this (which I'm definitely going to investigate), but my question centers more around the Assembly and/or Version classes. My approach was to write a separate exe (BuildIncrementer) that takes a command line parameter for file name, does a regex match on the contents to grab the [assembly: AssemblyVersion...] string, do the modifications that I want (increment the build number, etc.), then write the contents back to the file. This approach works as-is. The next thing I did was in the project that I wanted to use this on, I set up a pre-build command line that is simply the command to execute that BuildIncrementer.exe on this project's AssemblyInfo.cs file. This too works, updating the assembly info as desired. The problem comes when I run the project, it sends an email containing the current version, obtained with Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetName().Version.ToString(). BUT, the version showing up is the previous version. When my AssemblyInfo.cs says [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.2.49667")], I get sent 1.0.1.45660, which was the previous build. Anyone have any ideas why that might be?

• Weird behaviour of C++ destructors

But when run in a debugger, it takes over 8 seconds. Pausing the debugger reveals that it is in the middle of destroying all those vectors. WTF? Note - Visual Studio 2008 SP1, Core 2 Duo 6700 CPU with 2GB of RAM. Added: To clarify, no, I'm not confusing Debug and Release builds. These results are on one and the same .exe, without even any recompiling inbetween. In fact, switching between Debug and Release builds changes nothing.

• Problem storing a hash in DB using Storable::nfreeze in Perl

  I want to insert a hash in the db using Storable::nfreeze but the data is not inserted properly. The nfreeze did not store the hash properly. Can someone point me to what I'm doing wrong in the createOrder subroutine? I know the module version have nothing to do with the problem.

• Can I get a reference to a pending transaction from a SqlConnection object?

Thus, in this handler I will have a reference to the IDbConnection object, but I won't have a reference to the pending transaction. Is there any way in which I can get a hold of the transaction? In my OnUpdate handler I want to execute something similar to the following: private void MyOnUpdateHandler(IDbConnection conn) { var cmd = conn.CreateCommand(); cmd.CommandText = someSQLString; cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } However, the call to cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() throws an InvalidOperationException complaining that "ExecuteNonQuery requires the command to have a transaction when the connection assigned to the command is in a pending local transaction. The Transaction property of the command has not been initialized". Can I in any way enlist my SqlCommand cmd with the pending transaction? Can I retrieve a reference to the pending transaction from the IDbConnection object (I'd be happy to use reflection if necessary)?

• std::locale breakage on MacOS 10.6 with LANG=en_US.UTF-8

  I have a C++ application that I am porting to MacOSX (specifically, 10.6). The app makes heavy use of the C++ standard library and boost. I recently observed some breakage in the app that I'm having difficulty understanding. Basically, the boost filesystem library throws a runtime exception when the program runs. With a bit of debugging and googling, I've reduced the offending call to the following minimal program: #include <locale> int main ( int argc, char *argv [] ) { std::locale::global(std::locale("")); return 0; } This program fails when I run this through g++ and execute the resulting program in an environment where LANG=en_US.UTF-8 is set (which on my computer is part of the default bash session when I create a new console window). Clearing the environment variable (setenv LANG=) allows the program to run without issues. But I'm surprised I'm seeing this breakage in the default configuration. My questions are: Is this expected behavior for this code on MacOS 10.6? What would a proper workaround be? I can't really re-write the function because the version of the boost libraries we are using executes this statement internally as part of the filesystem library. For completeness, I should point out that the program from which this code was synthesized crashes when launched via the 'open' command (or from the Finder) but not when Xcode runs the program in Debug mode. edit The error given by the above code on 10.6.1 is: $ ./locale terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): locale::facet::_S_create_c_locale name not valid Abort trap

  I develop a political survey website where anyone can vote once. Obviously I have to prevent multiple registrations for the survey remains relevant. Already I force every user to login with their Google, Facebook or Twitter account. But they can authenticate 3 times if they have an account on each, or authenticate with multiple accounts of the same platform (I have 3 accounts on Google). So I thought also store the IP address, but they can still go through a proxy... I thought also keep the HTTP User Agent with PHP's get_browser(), although they can still change browsers. I can extract the OS with a regex, to change OS is less easier than browsers. And there is also geolocation, for example with the Google Map API. So to summarize, several ideas: 1 / SSO Authentication (I keep the email) 2 / IP Address 3 / HTTP User Agent 4 / Geolocation with an API Have you any other ideas that I did not think? How to embed these tests? Execute in what order? Have you already deploy this kind of solution?

• Minimum privileges to read SQL Jobs using SQL SMO

  I wrote an application to use SQL SMO to find all SQL Servers, databases, jobs and job outcomes. This application is executed through a scheduled task using a local service account. This service account is local to the application server only and is not present in any SQL Server to be inspected. I am having problems getting information on job and job outcomes when connecting to the servers using a user with dbReader rights on system tables. If we set the user to be sysadmin on the server it all works fine. My question to you is: What are the minimum privileges a local SQL Server user needs to have in order to connect to the server and inspect jobs/job outcomes using the SQL SMO API? I connect to each SQL Server by doing the following: var conn = new ServerConnection { LoginSecure = false, ApplicationName = "SQL Inspector", ServerInstance = serverInstanceName, ConnectAsUser = false, Login = user, Password = password }; var smoServer = new Server (conn); I read the jobs by reading smoServer.JobServer.Jobs and read the JobSteps property on each of these jobs. The variable server is of type Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server. user/password are of the user found in each SQL Server to be inspected. If "user" is SysAdmin on the SQL Server to be inspected all works ok, as well as if we set ConnectAsUser to true and execute the scheduled task using my own credentials, which grants me SysAdmin privileges on SQL Server per my Active Directory membership.
