• Why does HDTune report better performing drives 2 months after installing them?

  OK, so this is really weird. I ran HDTune on a newly set-up home-built computer and got the following readings from my drives in mid-November. SSD 154 MB/s RAID1 87 RAID0 198 (software installs) RAID0 98 Swap drive Today, in January, I run HDTune (same version) and get these results, in MB/s: SSD 186 RAID1 98 RAID0 241 RAID0 98 (Swap drive) Here are more details that HDTune reports on the SSD drive: HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX Benchmark Blockquote Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Maximum : 219.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Average : 185.7 MB/sec Access Time : 0.1 ms Burst Rate : 187.3 MB/sec CPU Usage : -1.0% To get to my question: Why are my hard drives improving in performance? Most of my logical drives are in some form of RAID, except for the SSD. Will this performance ever deteriorate? Note, none of my drives are a hybrid drive that uses some form of SSD to enhance the write/reads on actual platters.

  I'm working with general purpose image rendering, and high-performance image processing, and so I need to know how to store bitmaps in-memory. (24bpp/32bpp, compressed/raw, etc) I'm not working with 3D graphics or DirectX / OpenGL rendering and so I don't need to use graphics card compatible bitmap formats. My questions: What is the "usual" or "normal" way to store bitmaps in memory? (in C++ engines/projects?) How to store bitmaps for high-performance algorithms, such that read/write times are the fastest? (fixed array? with/without padding? 24-bpp or 32-bpp?) How to store bitmaps for applications handling a lot of bitmap data, to minimize memory usage? (JPEG? or a faster [de]compression algorithm?) Some possible methods: Use a fixed packed 24-bpp or 32-bpp int[] array and simply access pixels using pointer access, all pixels are allocated in one continuous memory chunk (could be 1-10 MB) Use a form of "sparse" data storage so each line of the bitmap is allocated separately, reusing more memory and requiring smaller contiguous memory segments Store bitmaps in its compressed form (PNG, JPG, GIF, etc) and unpack only when its needed, reducing the amount of memory used. Delete the unpacked data if its not used for 10 secs.

• Clustering Strings on the basis of Common Substrings

  I have around 10000+ strings and have to identify and group all the strings which looks similar(I base the similarity on the number of common words between any two give strings). The more number of common words, more similar the strings would be. For instance: How to make another layer from an existing layer Unable to edit data on the network drive Existing layers in the desktop Assistance with network drive In this case, the strings 1 and 3 are similar with common words Existing, Layer and 2 and 4 are similar with common words Network Drive(eliminating stop word) The steps I'm following are: Iterate through the data set Do a row by row comparison Find the common words between the strings Form a cluster where number of common words is greater than or equal to 2(eliminating stop words) If number of common words<2, put the string in a new cluster. Assign the rows either to the existing clusters or form a new one depending upon the common words Continue until all the strings are processed I am implementing the project in C#, and have got till step 3. However, I'm not sure how to proceed with the clustering. I have researched a lot about string clustering but could not find any solution that fits my problem. Your inputs would be highly appreciated.

• I need help with a timer for a text based game, i need to include a mysql query to it, but not sure how.

• Pressing 'Enter' doesn't really work in Firefox

  When I'm typing just about anywhere in Firefox on OSX and press enter, it simply doesn't do anything. This includes typing in a textarea element (which should take the cursor to the next line), in a search form (which should submit the form). I'm typing this very question in Firefox right now and I'm unable to advance the cursor to the beginning of the next line. I have no clue what I did to make this happen, but it's kinda driving me insane. This is Firefox 3.6.3 under Mac OS X 10.6. Thanks!

• ASP Fails with 500 Error

  We have a server setup as an IIS box and have some static pages with a few asp pages that handle the form submissions. The asp is really vbscript that sends a CDO message. When moving these pages to the new server the form will not submit, it gives a 500 error and the following shows in Event Viewer: Error: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed for Application Pool 'DefaultAppPool' because of the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-directory for the Application Pool. The data may have additional error codes.. I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere... I was thinking it may have something to do with the fact that we created this server from an image of another server. Thanks for your help in advance... Vince

• Facebook contest policy no-no?

  I would like to post a link on a Facebook page where it will exit Facebook entirely and go to a client's website, where people will be on a page (client's) where they can enter their e-mail address to be entered in a temporary database file with rules and disclosures etc., for a draw once the number of entries reaches 100 for instance. Once the number of entries reaches 100, a random winner is picked and notified via E-mail. The functionality is as follows: A link is place on a Facebook page leading to an external page The page is a form to merely enter their email address for a contest The email is placed in a temporary file An automatic E-mail is sent to the address used for confirmation using SHAH-256 hash The person receives the Email saying something to the affect "Please confirm your Email address etc. - If you did not authorize this, simply ignore this message and no further action will be taken". If the person clicks on the confirmation link, the Email is then stored in the database and the person is again notified saying "Thank you for signing up etc." Once others do the same process and the database reaches a certain number, the form is no longer accessible and automatically picks a random Email. Once picked, an Email is automatically sent to the winner stating the instructions, and notifying me also. Once that person clicks yet another confirmation link, the database is then automatically deleted. I have built this myself and have no intentions of breaking any rules, nor jeopardize the work/time/energy I have put into this project. Is this allowed?

• How to set up Apache 2 to serve only subdirectories

  I have 3 sites which need to be hosted on a web server (apache2 from repo running on Ubuntu 12.04). They are each in their own subdirectory within /var/www/ I would like apache to serve files from the relevant directories only if the directory name is given in the URL, but not serve the /var/www/ directory itself. E.g: http://1.2.3.4/site1/ should work and serve the index from /var/www/site1/index.html, but http://1.2.3.4/ should not serve anything. Currently, I can't get the url to point to the directory. Either I can get http://1.2.3.4/ to serve everything within /var/www/ (including /var/www/site2/secretstuff/), or I can get the root http://1.2.3.4/ to serve one of the subdirectories (/var/www/site1/). This is unacceptable site 1 needs Indexes enabled but the others must not. I just want to make site1's config only respond to requests of the form http://1.2.3.4/site1/* and not handle requests of the form http://1.2.3.4/ I do not have a domain name set up so I can't use subdomains.

• Word 2007 cell formatting

  I have created a form template in Word 2007 which include various fields. Some of the fields are to show time (i.e. 15:47:32). I've set the text field properties as "Date" HH:mm:ss. The trouble arises when the form is them completed. If I input 15.47.32 it correctly reverts to 15:47:32 but if I input 12.12.31 it reverts to 00:00:00. This also happens if I input 12:12:32. Please help as I've looked at this all afternoon now and it's driving me insane

• model association or controller?

  I'm trying to create a rails app that allows users to submit information about their pets. I've come to a point where my knowledge is limited and I don't know enough about what/how this could be done so I'm hoping this will be relatively easy to answer. At the moment I have a model called Pet, this model currently stores basic information like name, picture etc but it also holds more specific data like type, breed, date of birth etc. What I would like to be able to do is create a page that can match various records without having to be manually categorized if that makes sense so a users pet could be matched to other pets with the same breed, age etc. I've read about nested models as I understand this information could be submitted to 2 models in one form but I am not sure whether this could be done directly in a separate controller which would only be visible to users with pets in these matched "groups" if that makes sense. So in essence is it best practice to use 1 table to store all the information and just use a controller to match pets based on rows having the same values or would it be far simpler to have a form with a nested model and link 2 tables together? The main feature needs to be matching without a user having to create a group or categorize pets so the second model would need to add id's to an array instead of just creating more and more rows.

  I have a MS Access database for a small Hotel. On the main form I have Guest Information fields...(Name, Address, Phone#, etc). I also have an Excel file that keeps track of bookings for the Hotel. The following code takes the Guest information from my form in Access and populates the labeled cells in my Excel file. • Word 2010, how to update protected document

  The document has one "Section Break" with e.g. "Text Form Fields" above. To make this Form Field work properly I use "Restrict Editing", allow "Filling in Forms", "Select Sections" and then protect Section 1. Then "Start Enforcing Protection". Now when the document is protected above the Section Break you can't use CTRL-Aand F9 to make an update of the fields, etc. of the document below the Section Break. Is there any solution for this problem?

• Best practice for storing information from a php script for future use

  My employer uses forms to help people search for products. The product lists can change from time to time and the forms need to be updated again. The product information can be accessed through a third party API which I started tinkering with, I've recently built a script that retrieves the information with PHP and creates and populates a form dynamically with Javascript. So far so good, but... There are limitations to the API, mainly it can only be accessed a certain number of times per hour, it is probably more than my form/script would use but I want to create a script that is minimally intrusive. My main question is... What is the best practice for accessing the information once and storing it long enough to let the API reset? I was wondering about creating a cookie but there is the possibility of users that have them disabled. (Also, I am doing this as a personal project but I like the people I work for and I think this would help them out.) Thanks in advance.

  I have two pages: Default.aspx and WebForm1.aspx. One of these pages stores a session variable which works fine until I add code which ads expiration date to SessionID cookie. What happens is: Open default.aspx Set-Cookie ASP.NET_SessionId=14jhsdfq23jkh13jkh12k1; expires=Fri, 19-Mar-2010 07:31:47 GMT; path=/ Click on link to open WebForm1.aspx No cookies set Click on link to open Default.aspx (Cookie is reset) Set-Cookie ASP.NET_SessionId=; expires=Fri, 19-Mar-2010 07:31:47 GMT; path=/ So the question would be how should I set SessionID cookie expiration date correctly? • Doctrine Build-All Task fails in NetBeans - Class not found! Fatal Error: call to evictAll()

  When I build my model with the symfony doctrine:build --all --and-load command I have made no major changes to the model/schema, this is something new. I also tried sub-commands like build-model, build-tables, but they all hang.. I'm trying this in net beans. Any clue what this is? • Problem with System.Diagnostics.Process RedirectStandardOutput to appear in Winforms Textbox in real

  I'm having problems with the redirected output from a console application being presented in a Winforms textbox in real-time. The messages are being produced line by line however as soon as interaction with the Form is called for, nothing appears to be displayed. Following the many examples on both Stackoverflow and other forums, I can't seem to get the redirected output from the process to display in the textbox on the form until the process completes. By adding debug lines to the 'stringWriter_StringWritten' method and writing the redirected messages to the debug window I can see the messages arriving during the running of the process but these messages will not appear on the form's textbox until the process completes. Grateful for any advice on this. • Jquery dependent dropdown doesn't work in IE

  I have a 3 dropdowns: countries, states, and cities. States and cities are dependent of the previous form and loaded via AJAX. In Firefox and Chrome everything is ok, but in IE (8 in my case) when I select a state, the cities dropdown isn't loaded. It is like IE don't detect the change. It is not a load problem, because I have tested with a simple alert box. Any help will be really appreciated.   How to do to avoid having the scroller with a sticky footer to the bottom of the page (not bottom of window)? When I remove height=100% from content and sidebar, I'm no more getting the scroller.
