• Basic SQL Query, I am newbie

  I just started my database and query class on Monday. We met on Monday and just went over the syllabus, and on Wednesday the network at school was down so we couldn't even do the power point lecture. Right now I am working on my first homework assignment and I am almost finished but I am having trouble on one question. Here is is... Write a SELECT statement that returns one column from the Customers table named FullName that joins the LastName and FirstName columns. Format the columns with the last name, a comma, a space, and the first name like this: Doe, John Sort the result set by last name in ascending sequence. Return only the contacts whose last name begins with letters from M to Z. Here is what I have so far... USE md0577283 SELECT FirstName,LastName FROM Customers ORDER BY LastName,FirstName My question is how do I format is Lastname, FirstName like the professor wants and how do I only select names M-Z? • When my object is no longer referenced why do its events continue to run?

  Say I am making a game and have a base Buff class. I may also have a subclass named ThornsBuff which subscribes to the Player class's Damaged event. The Player may have a list of Buffs and one of them may be the ThornsBuff. For example: Test Class Player player = new Player(); player.ActiveBuffs.Add(new ThornsBuff(player)); ThornsBuff Class public ThornsBuff(Player player) { player.DamageTaken += player_DamageTaken; } private void player_DamageTaken(MessagePlayerDamaged m) { m.Assailant.Stats.Health -= (int)(m.DamageAmount * .25); } This is all to illustrate an example. If I were to remove the buff from the list, the event is not detached. Even though the player no longer has the buff, the event is still executed as if he did. Now, I could have a Dispel method to unregister the event, but that forces the developer to call Dispel in addition to removing the Buff from the list. What if they forget, increased coupling, etc. What I don't understand is why the event doesn't detatch itself automatically when the Buff is removed from the list. The Buff only existed in the list and that is its one reference. After it is removed shouldn't the event be detached? I tried adding the detaching code to the finalizer of the Buff but that didn't fix it either. The event is still running even after it has 0 references. I suppose it is because the garbage collector had not run yet? Is there any way to make it automatic and instant so that when the object has no references all its events are unregisted? Thanks.

  I have here a dynamic table named tb_user with column region_id and institute_id and both ids are primary key of another table tb_region (with column region_name and region_id) and tb_institute (column institute_id and institute_name). I wanted to see region_name and institute_name instead of the ids. • How do I set the dimensions of a custom component defined in an ActionScript class?

  I'm trying to set the height of a vertical bar (activityBar) but it does not appear to do anything. i have tried something similar with the whole component, but setting the dimensions does nothing (even in the mxml used to instantiate the class). Indeed, I've added transparent graphics just to give the component some dimensions I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It's something bad though; my approach seems dire. FYI: I'm trying to create a mic activity bar that will respond to the mic by simply setting the height of the activityBar child (which seems to me to be more efficient than redrawing the graphics each time).   Is there any way I can construct an new object from the given object if the template parameters of both objects are identical at run-time? • Having an issue with the "this" modifier...

  I have this method in City class. It should create a new city based on the object which the method is applied to: public City newCity(string newCityName, int dX, int dY) { City c=new City(this); //based on a constructor : City(City c){} c.CityName=newCityName; c.NoOfNeighborhoods=1; c.NumOfResidents=0; c.CityCenter.Move(dX,dY); return c; } CityCenter is of type "Point" which has two fields - x,y. the Move method in Point class is ment to change the CityCenter location. It looks like this: public void Move(int dX, int dY) { this.X = x + dX; this.Y = y + dY; } What happens is that the new object,c and the existing City object are both changed. I think that "this" modifier works on the existing object too... How can I take advantage of the Move method without causing this behavior? Note: this is a closed API, so I can only add private methods to the project.

  I am somewhat confused by what happens when you call strtok on a char pointer in C. I know that it modifies the contents of the string, so if I call strtok on a variable named 'line', its content will change. Assume I follow the bellow approach: void function myFunc(char* line) { // get a pointer to the original memory block char* garbageLine = line; // Do some work // Call strtok on 'line' multiple times until it returns NULL // Do more work free(garbageLine); } Further assume that 'line' is malloced before it is passed to myFunc.   Hello, Actually this tread is continuing from the other one. There wasn't enough characters to continue there. Anyway. the problem is that the output is "1(10) 2(23) 3(29)". Even though I could return string for the array values (10,23,29) and used string reference as 1, 2 and 3. My question is it possible to return index values 1,2,3 and as well as array values. Am I making an sense. I purposely keep all rgba values 0. However after I create the Color object with the rgba value as the constructor, if I call .getAlpha(), I get 255 even though I made the rgb value with a 0 alpha. If it returns 255, how could I tell the difference between a Color object that wasn't transparent, because that would also have a 255 alpha. I expect the color object to return a 0 alpha based on the function above. Does anyone know whats going on? Thanks

• Detecting modifier keys held down during startup in OS/X (or Windows)?

  I've searched here and not found any question that really covers this. I have a cross-platform Windows-OS/X application in which I'd like to be able to detect whether modifier keys like shift or control are being held down while the application starts up. We'd like to do this to allow the application to start up without reading its preferences file, in case that somehow gets corrupted (we saw in testing a prefs bug, now fixed, that made the window size 0 by 0, for example). We're using the excellent and comprehensive cross-platform C++ library named Juce. Unfortunately, Juce's master tells me that he believes this is impossible on OS/X at least since you only get keyboard events and there is no way to read the state of the keys unless something changes. Is this true? Or is there some way around this? I'm almost sure I've used Mac programs that used this mechanism to bypass their preferences. Or... stepping up one level... is there another solution to providing the functionality of "run the program but don't read the prefs file" other than "holding a key down while launching the program"? This is consumer software so we can't expect too much from the user. The final solution will end up being a cross-platform one so hints on the Windows side will also be appreciated. If I know have an instance of myClass and set some random garbage to a, b and c. What is the best way to reset them all to the state after the class constructor was called, so: 0, 0 and 0? Or.. myUsedInstance.a = 0; myUsedInstance.c = 0; myUsedInstance.c = 0; I think you know what I want, is there any better way to achieve this?

• Why does Java automatically decode %2F in URI encoded filenames?

  I have a java servlet that needs to write out files that have a user-configurable name. I am trying to use URI encoding to properly escape special characters, but the JRE appears to automatically convert encoded forward slashes (%2F) into path separators. Example: File dir = new File("C:\Documents and Setting\username\temp"); String fn = "Top 1/2.pdf"; URI uri = new URI( dir.toURI().toASCIIString() + URLEncoder.encoder( fn, "UTF-8" ).toString() ); File out = new File( uri ); System.out.println( dir.toURI().toASCIIString() ); System.out.println( URLEncoder.encoder( fn, "UTF-8" ).toString() ); System.out.println( uri.toASCIIString() ); System.out.println( output.toURI().toASCIIString() ); The output is: file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/ Top+1%2F2.pdf file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/Top+1%2F2.pdf file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/Top+1/2.pdf After the new File object is instantiated, the %2F sequence is automatically converted to a forward slash and I end up with an incorrect path. Does anybody know the proper way to approach this issue? The core of the problem seems to be that uri.equals( new File(uri).toURI() ) == FALSE when there is a '%2F' in the URI. I'm planning to just use the URLEncoded string verbatim rather than trying to use the File(uri) constructor.

• Watchguard Firewall - Issues with SSLVPN

  I have a client who has a WatchGuard XTM 23 device on site as their primary firewall. I just upgraded its firmware a couple days ago to the latest version for that series, 11.6.6. The problem is that I haven't successfully been able to setup a VPN connection for them. Using the instructions at http://www.watchguard.com/help/docs/webui/11_XTM/en-US/index.html#en-US/mvpn/ssl/configure_fb_for_mvpn_ssl_c.html, I'm trying to setup a VPN with SSL connection: From the firewall web GUI / Dashboard, I go to VPN - Mobile VPN with SSL, I enable it, add the organization's public IP address to which the firewall is connected. I've setup a group in Active Directory named "SSLVPN-Users", verified that the WatchGuard box can talk to the Active Directory Server, and added myself to that group. I then downloaded the WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client onto my own Windows 7 machine, walked to the client's 2nd building across the street (which has a different public internet connection), and tried to connect to the VPN. When I do try to connect with the client, I get the following errors: 2013-06-24T15:41:32.119 Launching WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client. Version 11.6.0 (Build 343814) Built:Jun 13 2012 01:42:55 2013-06-24T15:41:37.595 Requesting client configuration from 184.174.143.176:443 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 FAILED:Cannot perform http request, timeout 12002 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 failed to get domain name I discovered today the Firebox System Manager, and its "Traffic Monitor" which gives current log information (refreshes every 5 seconds). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the client has setup any sort of WatchGuard / Firebox logging server, so actually recording server-side logs to file hasn't been done. I can work on implementing that if I need to. I noticed that if I try to ping the client's public IP address from an outside source, I don't get a response back (unless I added a policy into the firewall to allow ICMP traffic from "External", which I successfully did a few seconds ago for testing purposes - that rule has since been reverted to not respond to external ping requests). There's a policy in the firewall for allowing SSLVPN Traffic authentication requests coming from any external source TO the Firebox, and then to do the authentication / actually allow the VPN traffic, there's a policy allowing traffic for anyone in the SSLVPN-Users group to flow between that user and the inside network. So my questions are: Has anyone seen these errors before from the Watchguard VPN Client, and/or do you have any suggestions on how I can resolve that error? If I need to setup logging server to grab the firewall logs (in order to further troubleshoot this issue), how complicated a task is that and does it require a lot of system resources? The organization I'm consulting with only has 1 server and not a lot of resources or technical know-how.

• How do I get a .Net 4.0 app to coexist as an application under a SharePoint 2007 website in IIS v7?

  I have created a small .Net 4.0 website and installed it on my SharePoint server as a separate web site in IIS v7 (using port 8008 for now). I had to install the .Net 4 framework, set up the database, etc. and this all went smoothly and my app works as a standalone website. Now I am trying to get pages from my website to show up in SharePoint 2007. For various reasons (the SharePoint site is using SSL, security, etc.) I now need to move my .Net app to run under the SharePoint 2007 site in IIS. I have added it as an 'Application' and set it up with the same .Net v4 application pool and settings that were working when it was set up as a standalone site. Now when I try to access the application I get the error at the end of this description. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already tried following the instructions on this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/sgoodyear/archive/2007/05/07/custom-web-applications-coexisting-with-sharepoint-2007.aspx but that did not help. Thanks! • Can't seem to install imagick

  I'm trying to install the PHP PEAR PECL extension "imagick" (image magick), but failing horribly. It seems that I keed installing packages to progress, but this one has me stumped.   I'm trying to setup a vSphere Client vCenter v5.0.0 Build 455964 Template Customization Specification using a Windows Sysprep unattended answer XML file for Win2008R2. However I didn't know how Sysprep worked before attempting this so it was a time-consuming nightmare (even after reviewing VMware vSphere ESXi 5's documentation)! I think I've figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, but it's still not working. The biggest problem at this point is that vSphere Client vCenter Customization Specification IP address information is not sticking when I load a Sysprep XML file with just 1 basic setting! This can only be a bug. Here is the process I'm using: PROCESS for Windows - vSphere Client Install Windows OS install VM Tools customize Windows (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment) install Applications (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment too) shutdown the VM convert the VM to a template create a custom Windows Sysprep XML answer file with desired customizations View Management Customization Specifications Manager create "New" Specification for "Target Virtual Machine OS" select Windows check "Use Custom Sysprep Answer File" (ADDS: Custom Sysprep File. KEEPS: Network (IP), Operating System Options (SID, Sysprep /generalize). • Ubuntu - Ruby Daemon script creates two processes - sh and ruby - PID file points at sh, not ruby

  The PID file for a ruby process I have running as a daemon is getting the wrong PID. It appears that running /etc/init.d/sinatra start creates two processes - sh and ruby, and the PID that ends up in the PID file is that of the sh process. This means that when I then run /etc/init.d/sinatra stop or /etc/init.d/sinatra restart, it is killing sh and leaving the ruby process still running. I'd like to know a) why is my script launching two processes - sh and ruby, and not just ruby, and b) how do I fix it to just launch ruby? Details of the setup: I have a small Sinatra server set up on an ubuntu server, running as a daemon. It is set to automatically at server startup run a script named sinatra in /etc/init.d that launches the a control script control.rb, which then runs a ruby daemon command to start the server. This is the output from ps -A f. This output looks the same whether I use sudo -u sinatrauser ... or su sinatrauser -c ... in the service start script in /etc/init.d. 1146 ? • Understanding vhosts settings

  Ok so i have a server and I want to put a few applications on and i am having vhost configuration problems. Could it be the NameVirtualHost declaration with the ip or something...maybe my understanding of vhost settings is not clear. What i dont understand is why do both site now all the sudden not work at all.I would highly appreciate the clarity By the way anothersite.com or somesite.com are the only things I changed to make it more readable

• Bind9 virtual subdomains

  I am trying to setup virtual subdomains using Bind9, following this tutorial.. http://groups.drupal.org/node/16862 which I've completed. Basically setting up the zone and modifying the resolv.conf file and the named.conf.local file. However, when I try and do test.mydomain.com in the browser, expecting it to default for now to mydomain.com it does not work and I get a server not found page in Firefox. I did read elsewhere that in your virutalhosts file you also need to setup a *.mydomain.com alias, but that didn't fix anything. Any other information that I could provide to help troubleshoot, or any troubleshooting suggestions? I am using Ubuntu 10.4, with typical LAMP setup. The only other things installed on the server are Bind9 and ftp client.

• Completely remove user account and create another with same name in Windows 7

  Here's my question simply and then the details in case they help to get me an appropriate answer. Question: How can I completely and permanently delete a user account in Windows 7 so that I can create another one with the same user name without the computer name extension added, eg Jane Smith not Jane Smith.computer name? The details: I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. (My laptop crashed, I reinstalled Vista and restored backup files but things weren't working so I decided to just get Windows 7 since I had to start over anyway). I used Windows Easy Transfer to save just about everything, even customizing to include a user's appdata from Windows.old which was created when I reinstalled Vista -- not knowing that another windows.old file would be created with the installation of Windows 7. After installing Windows 7, I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer the user file, appdata, to the new user account which I gave the same name (Jane Smith) in case having a different name would cause problems with reading files or something. Afterwards, I realized that I did not want ALL of that junk. So, I thought no problem, I'll just delete the user account I just created, nothing lost, and create another one this time transferring only the files I wanted (using the customize option in windows easy transfer). I wanted to keep the same user name, e.g. Jane Smith, so after I deleted the user account I checked the files, and I didn't see. It was late so I went to bed and the next morning I created a new user with that same name (Jane Smith). The files looked fine if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, I updated the computer and it restarted a couple times. As I was moving files to the "Jane Smith" user account file, things weren't working as they should. I was actually moving files to the deleted user account and that the current user account was named "Jane Smith.computer name" and that's where the files needed to go. I don't like this. It's too confusing. I want just "Jane Smith". How can I do this without just changing the user name (which doesn't change it in the file path etc)? I want the first one GONE. If I can't do this, is it a problem to create an account with another name and still transfer files to it without path or other problems? I hope this question makes sense and that someone can help me. Thank you in advance!
