• Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID. • Ubuntu 12.04 VPS doesn't boot with mysql in nsswitch.conf

  1and1 VPS ("dynamic cloud server") does not boot any more as soon as mysql lookup is enabled in nsswitch.conf - any suggestions appreciated. Minimal setup to reproduce the problem: install Ubuntu 12.04 / LTS minimal server image install mysql-server, libnss-mysql-bg, nscd configure /etc/libnss-mysql.cfg and /etc/libnss-mysql-root.cfg set up appropriate database tables configure nss lookups through mysql in nsswitch.conf passwd: compat mysql group: compat mysql shadow: compat mysql Now, when I try to reboot the server it just hangs. No logs (maybe due to /var not yet being mounted), and I can't see console output (since this is a VPS). Booting into recovery image and removing "mysql" from /etc/nsswitch.conf makes the system bootable again, so this is definitely related to nsswitch/libnss-mysql-bg. There's a thread on gentoo-users which seems to describe a similar problem, unfortunately there's no real solution described, also the thread is rather old (from 2006) so I'm not sure whether this applies to me at all.

• Radeon hd 6570 black screen

  I got some problem with new graphic card. Every time I use AMD Catalyst drivers on Windows or Linux, screen repeatedly goes black. This usually shows u when i open new cards in a browser, resize a window or run a program. Card runs smoothly on basic drivers but this means low resolution. 1940x1080 is native for my monitor so it causes a lot of problems. I've got a 600W Deus G1, so the power is not the problem. Maybe its a silly question, but would going form a vga cable to hdmi help to improve this situation? If not, can it be caused by slow processor or old mainboard? Im getting kinda confused about this whole thing...

  I have Asterisk/1.8.13.1 Asterisk GUI-version : SVN--r Yes, quite old one, but I can not update it since this is installed on my Synology NAS. NAS is connected to internet thru router Asus RT-N16. I should use the following data to connect to the server: Auth name – 7499952XXXX User name/User ID/Display Name – nickname Authorization user name - [email protected] Domain - sip.beeline.ru SIP proxy server - msk.sip.beeline.ru I've also found the following string: [email protected]:password:[email protected]@msk.sip.beeline.ru:5060/7499952XXXX I've tested the parameters on my PC thru X-Lite and it works well (so, assume there is no any problem with the router, no need to do anything with router's NAS settings). But since I am quite new to Asterisk, I can not understand where to input all these data. Asterisk GUI doesn't have fields for proxy: Can somebody please help me with step-by-step instruction? • A home router for torrents, gaming, webbing and detailed QoS [closed]

  I want to plug in an external HD on it to torrent up never ending (mostly for seeding), with lowest priority. It should even automatically completely stop if it disturbs my net usage, and go back in later. And I want to be able to give gaming (or my computer) the highest priority, because of its ping requirements. It should be above even of Skype and any voip, which also have high priority. Web surfing and "youtubing" comes in the middle - it won't matter much if it delays a second or two. Finally, interface as simple as possible. It's fine if it's command line setup, but it needs to have a GUI. What are my options for routers / firmwares as described? Maybe Gargoyle? Or even Time Capsule? It seems to me good old DD-WRT isn't the best option out there anymore. I wonder what else could cover these grounds.

• Why can't I copy a 7 GB file to an external USB HD with 120 GB free?

  Yes, why can't I? I was stashing away some old photography backup zips last night. I could copy 4 of my 1 GB backup zips to my external USB connected hard-drive when I got the error message "Cannot copy file. Not enough free space." (sort of) for a zip of roughly 7 GB. But there are 120 GB free. Why is this? EDIT: Clarification - the files that I could copy was smaller than 4 GB. The failing one was 7 GB. The cause seems to be the FAT32 4 GB limit.

  How do you repair/reinstall Fedora without deleting any existing partitions or data? I was attempting to upgrade some old Fedora 13 servers to 17, following the instructions in the wiki. After the 14-15 upgrade, rebooting resulted in the output: Dropping to debug shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off dracut:/# Running dmesg also shows: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root" found Googling shows this error is typically related to some weird RAID issues, but my server is a virtual machine not using any RAID. Using a rescue CD, I can chroot /mnt/sysimage, and all packages and data still seems to be there. How do I make the system bootable again?

• Do you know of an online back up & sync solution for Windows that actually works?

  I've been looking for some time for a program that backups your data to the cloud and is also able to sync 2 or more computers. By syncing I mean, if I change something on one computer that it should also apply the same change on another computer. I've tried two solutions so far which looked good initially but ultimately failed because they were buggy or simply don't work, or both. Syncplicity has messed up my file structure several times and they don't fix fix bugs that are literally over a year old. I then switched to SpiderOak which looked promising but ultimately had the same problems. Messed up my file structure several times, sometimes sync simply doesn't work, it's extremely inefficient and they keep pushing out releases were they say they fixed the sync bugs I reported but they did't. Does anyone of you know of an online sync solution that actually works?

• MSTSC Not working, disconnects shortly after connecting

  I'm currently having a problem connecting remotely to a server. It is a brand new build Windows 2008 R2, remote users are enabled. I'm trying to connect from a Windows 7 machine. Everytime I remotely connect to the server it will stay connected for a matter of seconds (maybe 3-5) and then disconnect and I get the standard old cannot connect and list of reasons it could be. Then I cannot connect again and get this prompt until I restart the server. As soon as it's finished restarting, it happens all over again. The network and hardware configuration between the two machines is completely reliable. Does anybody know what else I could try? Thanks.

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation.   Hi everyone, My companies currently hardware firewall (an old ZyXEL ZyWALL firewall) and is indeed requiring an update to a new firewall. It is a small company with a similar small server-environment, so the need for a huge, complex and expensive solution isn’t there but a more “straight-forward” firewall, that can provide the necessary security to our systems and block unwanted elements from the core server and only accept access through our one server which is used as an “gateway” between the Internet and our internal network. I haven’t that much experience with hardware firewalls so I’m requesting any good advice and/or knowledge on which products will be suited for our specific need. • EMC CX3-10c Fault Condition won;t clear

  We have an old CX3-10c from Dell that had both Standby Power Supplies (SPS) fail. This obviously caused a fault on the system and disabled the cache. We have replaced the SPS's and they test fine as do all other components. Problem is there is still a fault on the "Enclosure SPE [SPE3]" despite all the component in the enclosure showing as good. I was on the line with Dell Gold support for 3 hours yesterday, they have had me restart the SPs multiple times, as well as reseat the power supplies, even shutdown the system completely and power it back on. All to no avail. Fault remains and cache cannot be re-enabled so long as the Fault is present. Any suggestions on clearing this erroneous fault?

• How long to erase flash memory (RAID controller)?

  I made a bit of a boo boo last night in upgrading the BIOS in a Silicon Image Sil3132 eSATA adapter. It's a RAID controller in a server. I accidently flashed it with the wrong BIOS ;-) Not the end of the world as this card only cost £15 but I'm trying to flash it with the correct BIOS as it won't obviously work anymore. Silicon Image supply a DOS program for flashing and I thought I'd use the Erase function to get rid of the old BIOS. Any idea how long this should take? It's been sat at the "Erasing memory" prompt for about 15 minutes. Thanks, Rob.

• Computer won't start unless power is removed for ~5 minutes

  I have a fairly standard 2-year old desktop computer (quad-core intel, single hard drive, decent video card, 300W power supply) which recently started acting up. I'm not sure what the cause is, so hopefully you can help. Sometimes (once a week-ish) I press the power button and nothing happens. No blinking, no sounds, no nothing. If I remove the power cord (or flip the switch on the power supply) I hear a capacitor discharge. If I leave it in the "no power at all" state for about 5 minutes then I can put the plug back in and the computer works perfectly. What is the issue? What do you think I have to replace?

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

  Hello, Can anyone tell me what the compatibility of drivers on 64bit vista are like on the Dell Inspiron 1525. Mine is just a year old now and I want to upgrade to 64bit vista. • How to fix: mac keyboard ignores "first" key pressed

  UPDATE 2012.03.19: the MBP described in this post is now broken and recycled (logic board fried). The replacement doesn't manifest the same problems. I tend to believe the problem originated in the keyboard firmware of the old MBP. Every now and then, usually after I haven't pressed a key in some time, sometimes minutes, sometimes seconds, my MBP will "swallow" the the first key I press ... say I'm logging into "superuser.com" .. I start typing my username and the textbox will show "exu" instead of "lexu" This is driving me nuts! My guess is the keyboard or it's controller goes to sleep and fails to wake up propperly ... What can I do about this? PS: I've already installed "MacBook, MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0"

• Re-Calibrate Toshiba battery meter with Windows 7

  Hi All. I have a Toshiba U300 laptop. Back in the olden days (circa-2000) you could re-calibrate the battery meter from the BIOS when your battery was no longer reading accurately. My battery was shot, so I bought a brand new one, however Windows 7 still seems to count down the battery life in at the same speed as the old one did. This time, when it alleged 0%, I turned the laptop back on and got another 90 minutes of life out of it, at 0%. Is there a tool or utility for Toshiba laptops that can fix it back to being accurate? I've read the other threads on SU about cycling the battery but that just doesn't seem to do it in this case. Update: After the last cycle, the battery meter now reads 100% but the indicator on the front of the laptop is still orange (indicating not fully charged)

  We are overhauling a lab with new machines with Windows 7 (as clients - around 150 of them). In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients? It would be great if you can give me pointers to what concepts and background I need to have (like GPO), any design guidelines, best practices?

• Automatic switching between "digital output" (HDMI) and built-in speakers in Vista

  We occasionally connect my wife's laptop, which runs Vista, to our TV. Whenever we do this we have to manually switch the default audio output to "digital output" for the sound to go through the HDMI connection, and we also have to restart any apps that we want to send sound to the TV. We then have to perform a similar process when disconnecting. Is there any way to just have this be automatic? It seems absurd to have to do so much manual fiddling when a 40 year old transistor radio is "smart" enough to turn off the speakers and send sound to the headphones when headphones are plugged in. In case it helps, the name "RealTek" shows up in the sound card settings dialog.

• Modifying kernel shared memory settings on a lion install

  What's the location of the sysctl.conf file on lion? In Snow Leopard it was in /etc/sysctl.conf but now that folder doesn't contain it anymore. Searching for the file in spotlight yields no results. Have the shared memory settings been moved to a different conf file? What is it's name? EDIT I am trying to modify the kernel shared memory settings of the machine. When I didn't find the sysctl.conf file in the right place, I created my own with the recommended settings and put into /etc directory. However running sysctl -a still shows me that the old memory settings are in place. How do I go about modifying these on a lion install?

• DNS Server (2008 r2) MMC The server DC01 could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied

  I've just migrated the AD with the whole nine yards, FSMO, PDC, RID, Schema, etc, from an SBS 2003 to a Win 2008 R2 Std. I have managed to have no error in the dcdiag before I demoted the SBS 2003 from the AD, fsmocheck, conectivity, advertising, dns, etc. The SBS 2003 demoted successfully. After this step I have restarted both, the old SBS and the new Win 2008 r2. After restart the new DC (which is the GC) started with an Access denied to the DNS Server MMC, actually it is looking like I would try to connect to the 2008 r2 DNS server from an older server console I can NOT manage DNS server through MMC nor through dnscmd (Command failed: ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED 5 0x5) I cannot even use the Action Option from the DNS Server MMC because all the options are DISABLED but for "Launch nslookup". I've made a lot of research on the internet but no luck, yet. So I come to ask for help. Thank you very much.

• Creating Windows partition in Boot Camp without an install disc

  I have an old Macbook1,1 which has Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to get Win 7 on it by using Boot Camp Assistant, however my superdrive is not working (It just spits out any disc I put in within 10 seconds). I know how to get Win 7 installed by using USB drive, but I still need Boot Camp to create the Windows partition for me. I've made an ISO file of the install disc which I've mounted, but Boot Camp won't pick it up. It seems to only look in the superdrive. How can I get Boot Camp to skip requirement of an install disc? edit: nevermind, as it turns out the partition was already created by the time it asked for the disc!

• Windows Home Server Passwords Do Not Match

  I have a Windows Home Server that chunks along just fine most of the time. I've never bothered to put it on a UPS and so it's vulnerable to power outages that happen a few times a year. This most recent time, it came back and seemed to be fine, but whenever I try to access a shared folder I get "Passwords do not match". They matched before the power went out, and I couldn't update the WHS password since I apparently didn't know the old one. How do I fix this? • new xp install, but it moves slow

  hi there I just installed new XP windows OS on a old laptop. I did also all the updates I was asked for. I installed also, the latest driver updates from the official laptop producer site. Now, when I try to use that laptop to talk on Yahoo! Messenger, the sound quality is very bad, and I barely hear what the other person is saying. Before I was reinstalling the XP the laptop were working fine. do you have any tips for me? What software utilities to try in order to improve it's performance? what software utilities to install in order to test it's performances?
