• Setting up quotas on 64-bit RHEL6 OS with ext4 filesystem

  Setting up a new 64 bit RHEL 6 server with ext4 FS. Have only worked with ext3 and 32bit RHEL5 before. No matter what I try, I cannot get it to work. Current settings for mount (from "mount" command): /dev/sda7 on / type ext4 (rw,noatime) proc on /proc type proc (rw) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid) /dev/sdb1 on /backup type ext4 (rw) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext4 (rw,noatime) /dev/sda8 on /home type ext4 (rw,noatime,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0) /dev/sda2 on /tmp type ext4 (rw,noexec,noatime) /dev/sda6 on /usr type ext4 (rw,noatime) /dev/sda5 on /var type ext4 (rw,noatime,usrjquota=aquota.user,jqfmt=vfsv0) none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw) Essentially trying to get user/group quotas on /home, and user quotas on /var. • IP Tables won't save the rule.

  Hello, I'm using ArchLinux and I have an IP tables rule that I know works (from my other server), and it's in /etc/iptables/iptables.rules, it's the only rule set in that directory. • Why doesn't the monitor output anything in Linux console mode?

  I install Linux without graphics support. Previously I used a monitor with 720p support. And it can display normally. Now I change to a monitor with 1080p support. I can see BIOS and GRUB info on monitor, and kernel messages in early stages. However, the monitor says that there is no input immediately, and then I can't see anything again. It seems that it happens after something initializes. • glusterfs mounts get unmounted when 1 of the 2 bricks goes offline

  I have an odd case where 1 of the 2 replicated glusterfs bricks will go offline and take all of the client mounts down with it. As I understand it, this should not be happening. It should fail over to the brick that is still online, but this hasn't been the case. I suspect that this is due to configuration issue. Here is a description of the system: 2 gluster servers on dedicated hardware (gfs0, gfs1) 8 client servers on vms (client1, client2, client3, ... , client8) Half of the client servers are mounted with gfs0 as the primary, and the other half are pointed at gfs1. • Softpedia published some of my open source projects — how to react?

  (FYI: I've just moved this question over from Stackoverflow on recommendation.) I just received a few emails, informing me that softpedia.com has added some of my "products" to their "database of scripts, code snippets and web applications". My products are in this case some smaller open source projects, which I have hosted and published on github. Now I'm wondering how to react to this. This site is indirectly making money of my free work through ads on three pages before the actual download. They also seem to "invent" version numbers and I can't find out if they're hosting the latest or all versions of my projects. — I can see how this could lead to problems in the future, since I don't control what's "the latest" everywhere. On the other hand I don't mind some extra publicity. I want as many people as possible to know about the projects, use them, fork them and hopefully improve them. The projects in questions are really fairly small, but this might not be the case in the future for me and/or other people reading this question. I'm sure that this must have happened to others around here. What's your opinion? Should I try to get the downloads removed? Update 1 I've requested the removal and mentioned that I don't feel that Softpedia can provide the right environment for this kind of project. Their team got back to me instantly with a friendly email saying, that they'll remove the links for now: If you are worried that your projects won't be updated, then I must tell you that I have them bookmarked in my RSS reader, so any version changes will be forwarded to me when needed. So I promise I'll keep your script up to date as soon as I see an update in the repository. I have to say, that I appreciate this kind of reaction quite a lot and so I sent them another email, describing in more detail what I'm worried about and what bothers me. I also stated, that I'm aware that my license clearly permits them to host the projects in any case, but that I'd be even happy if they would host the projects as long as they could convince me of a few details and maybe make some small changes to the way the projects are represented. — Let's see where this goes. Update 2 After discussing with their contact and requesting some changes regarding display of version (they had given the possibility to do so) and authorship they put the projects back up on their site. All in all a positive and definitely interesting experience.

• jQuery slide open and close menus. How to stop them going crazy? [closed]

  I want sub menu's of a verticle menu to expand and collapse when moused over. This is what i've got so far but it goes crazy if you do it to quick as all the animations run at once and on a delay. How can i make sure just one menu expands at a time. • Facebook, Yimg and google-analytics CDNs is freaking me out

  Hi, Its been a couple of weeks that some sites just keeps on hanging. e.g. Facebooks = static.ak.fbcdn.net FLicker = l.yimg.com GoogleAnalytics I've googled and found many problems like this and some answers which are outdated or just doesn't solve the problem. I did: Cookies clearing, ran cc cleaner and several other nifty methods. None solved my problem?? Only with facebook, if I enter https:// manually instead of http:// on every url on facebook, it works and when it does the redirection to http://, everytime I have to type 's' on the address bar to make it https:// It is driving me nuts coz I'm developing Facebook App and this problem in being pain in my ass. What might be the reason for these CDNs hanging behaviour?? • SharePoint 2010 Single Page Apps without a Master Page

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/djacobus/archive/2014/06/06/156827.aspxWell, maybe a stretch, but I am inclined to believe it is so.  I have been using  the JavaScript Client Object Model (JCSOM) for about 6 months now and I believe it can do about 80% of my job quickly without much fanfare.  When building sites in SharePoint no one wants the OOTB list views, etc. They want a custom look and feel!  I used to think in previous engagements that this would mean some custom server code or at least a data-form web part.   Since coming on-board in my current engagement, I have been forced because we don’t own the hosting site to come up with innovative ways to customize the UI of SharePoint.  We can push content via sandbox solutions and use JCSOM from within SharePoint Designer to do almost all customizations.  I have been using the following methodology to accomplish this: 1. Create an HTML file, which links CSS and JavaScript Files 2. Create and ASPX Web Part Page, Include a Content Editor Web Part and link to the HTML page created above.   So basically once it was done, I could copy , paste,  and rename those 4 items: CC, JS, HTML. ASPX and using MVVM just change the Model, View, and View-Model in the JavaScript file.  in about 5 minutes, I could create a completely new web part with SharePoint data.  Styling would take a little longer.  Some issues that would crop up: 1.  Multiple(s) of these web parts would not work well together on the same page (context). 2.  To separate the Web parts and context I would create a separate page for each web part and link them to a tabs layout via a Page Viewer web part or I frame.  Easy to do and not a problem but a big load problem as these web part pages even with minimal master had huge footprints.  (master page and page web part zones)   I kept thinking of my experience with SharePoint 2013 and apps!  The JavaScript was loaded from within the app, why can’t we do that in 2010 and skip the master page and web part zones. If you’ve been following the previous articles, you must have noticed that I’m just adding more and more ‘Product’ classes to the project. • C#/.NET Little Wonders: Using &lsquo;default&rsquo; to Get Default Values

  Once again, in this series of posts I look at the parts of the .NET Framework that may seem trivial, but can help improve your code by making it easier to write and maintain. The index of all my past little wonders posts can be found here. Today’s little wonder is another of those small items that can help a lot in certain situations, especially when writing generics.  In particular, it is useful in determining what the default value of a given type would be. The Problem: what’s the default value for a generic type? There comes a time when you’re writing generic code where you may want to set an item of a given generic type.  Seems simple enough, right?  We’ll let’s see! Let’s say we want to query a Dictionary<TKey, TValue> for a given key and get back the value, but if the key doesn’t exist, we’d like a default value instead of throwing an exception. So, for example, we might have a the following dictionary defined: 1: var lookup = new Dictionary<int, string> 2: { 3: { 1, "Apple" }, 4: { 2, "Orange" }, 5: { 3, "Banana" }, 6: { 4, "Pear" }, 7: { 9, "Peach" } 8: }; And using those definitions, perhaps we want to do something like this: 1: // assume a default 2: string value = "Unknown"; 3:  4: // if the item exists in dictionary, get its value 5: if (lookup.ContainsKey(5)) 6: { 7: value = lookup[5]; 8: } But that’s inefficient, because then we’re double-hashing (once for ContainsKey() and once for the indexer).  Well, to avoid the double-hashing, we could use TryGetValue() instead: 1: string value; 2:  3: // if key exists, value will be put in value, if not default it 4: if (!lookup.TryGetValue(5, out value)) 5: { 6: value = "Unknown"; 7: } But the “flow” of using of TryGetValue() can get clunky at times when you just want to assign either the value or a default to a variable.  Essentially it’s 3-ish lines (depending on formatting) for 1 assignment.  So perhaps instead we’d like to write an extension method to support a cleaner interface that will return a default if the item isn’t found: 1: public static class DictionaryExtensions 2: { 3: public static TValue GetValueOrDefault<TKey, TValue>(this Dictionary<TKey, TValue> dict, 4: TKey key, TValue defaultIfNotFound) 5: { 6: TValue value; 7:  8: // value will be the result or the default for TValue 9: if (!dict.TryGetValue(key, out value)) 10: { 11: value = defaultIfNotFound; 12: } 13:  14: return value; 15: } 16: } 17:  So this creates an extension method on Dictionary<TKey, TValue> that will attempt to get a value using the given key, and will return the defaultIfNotFound as a stand-in if the key does not exist. This code compiles, fine, but what if we would like to go one step further and allow them to specify a default if not found, or accept the default for the type?  Obviously, we could overload the method to take the default or not, but that would be duplicated code and a bit heavy for just specifying a default.  It seems reasonable that we could set the not found value to be either the default for the type, or the specified value. So what if we defaulted the type to null? 1: public static TValue GetValueOrDefault<TKey, TValue>(this Dictionary<TKey, TValue> dict, 2: TKey key, TValue defaultIfNotFound = null) // ... No, this won’t work, because only reference types (and Nullable<T> wrapped types due to syntactical sugar) can be assigned to null.  So what about a calling parameterless constructor? 1: public static TValue GetValueOrDefault<TKey, TValue>(this Dictionary<TKey, TValue> dict, 2: TKey key, TValue defaultIfNotFound = new TValue()) // ... No, this won’t work either for several reasons.  First, we’d expect a reference type to return null, not an “empty” instance.  Secondly, not all reference types have a parameter-less constructor (string for example does not).  And finally, a constructor cannot be determined at compile-time, while default values can. The Solution: default(T) – returns the default value for type T Many of us know the default keyword for its uses in switch statements as the default case.  But it has another use as well: it can return us the default value for a given type.  And since it generates the same defaults that default field initialization uses, it can be determined at compile-time as well. For example: 1: var x = default(int); // x is 0 2:  3: var y = default(bool); // y is false 4:  5: var z = default(string); // z is null 6:  7: var t = default(TimeSpan); // t is a TimeSpan with Ticks == 0 8:  9: var n = default(int?); // n is a Nullable<int> with HasValue == false Notice that for numeric types the default is 0, and for reference types the default is null.  In addition, for struct types, the value is a default-constructed struct – which simply means a struct where every field has their default value (hence 0 Ticks for TimeSpan, etc.). So using this, we could modify our code to this: 1: public static class DictionaryExtensions 2: { 3: public static TValue GetValueOrDefault<TKey, TValue>(this Dictionary<TKey, TValue> dict, 4: TKey key, TValue defaultIfNotFound = default(TValue)) 5: { 6: TValue value; 7:  8: // value will be the result or the default for TValue 9: if (!dict.TryGetValue(key, out value)) 10: { 11: value = defaultIfNotFound; 12: } 13:  14: return value; 15: } 16: } Now, if defaultIfNotFound is unspecified, it will use default(TValue) which will be the default value for whatever value type the dictionary holds.  So let’s consider how we could use this: 1: lookup.GetValueOrDefault(1); // returns “Apple” 2:  3: lookup.GetValueOrDefault(5); // returns null 4:  5: lookup.GetValueOrDefault(5, “Unknown”); // returns “Unknown” 6:  Again, do not confuse a parameter-less constructor with the default value for a type.  Remember that the default value for any type is the compile-time default for any instance of that type (0 for numeric, false for bool, null for reference types, and struct will all default fields for struct).  Consider the difference: 1: // both zero 2: int i1 = default(int); 3: int i2 = new int(); 4:  5: // both “zeroed” structs 6: var dt1 = default(DateTime); 7: var dt2 = new DateTime(); 8:  9: // sb1 is null, sb2 is an “empty” string builder 10: var sb1 = default(StringBuilder()); 11: var sb2 = new StringBuilder(); So in the above code, notice that the value types all resolve the same whether using default or parameter-less construction.  This is because a value type is never null (even Nullable<T> wrapped types are never “null” in a reference sense), they will just by default contain fields with all default values. However, for reference types, the default is null and not a constructed instance.  Also it should be noted that not all classes have parameter-less constructors (string, for instance, doesn’t have one – and doesn’t need one). • How can I make Cygwin open a new window each time I use a Window 7 keyboard shortcut?

  [Update: The short answer is, if an application in the 3rd thing on your taskbar, press WindowsKey+Shift+3 to open a new instance. Hooray!] I have Chrome and Cygwin on my taskbar. Chrome's shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-C (as set through right clicking the icon and putting Ctrl-Alt-C into Chrome - Properties - Shortcut Key). Cygwin's shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-T. When I press Ctrl-Alt-C, I get a new Chrome window. Great! It's as if I had shift-clicked on the Chrome icon. When I press Ctrl-Alt-T, I get a Cygwin window the first time, but after that I just get focused on the Cygwin window. As if I had simply clicked on the Cygwin icon and not shift-clicked. As if Cygwin wasn't able to have more than one instance open. I can still shift-click the icon to get more instances. I've tried with different keys than Ctrl-Alt-T and got the same behavior. Strangely, I've twice managed to get it into a state (via just clearing and setting the shortcut key over and over) where a shortcut WOULD open multiple instances -- but it was Ctrl-Alt-G both times, which doesn't make sense to my brain which has been trained to use Ctrl-Alt-T for years. Ctrl-Alt-G usually behaves just as poorly as Ctrl-Alt-T, except for the two times when magically it started behaving properly. So I'm thinking this is a Windows 7 bug (which has existed since Windows XP at least), but I'm hoping someone knows something I don't :)

• why does mysql have so many more open and fragmented tables than tables in the DB?

  I've been working making our database run a little smoother and had good results over the past week. But there are still some things I dont understand. For one thing, the database has 25 tables. But mysql status shows 512 are open: mysqladmin status Uptime: 212854 Threads: 1 Questions: 43041 Slow queries: 7 Opens: 2605 Flush tables: 1 Open tables: 512 Queries per second avg: 0.202 I've read that isam opens extra file descriptors and a few other reasons why the number of open tables might be higher than 25, but I am guessing that 512 is not a good thing. Any suggestions on why this might be or what I should be looking into? I've also been using mysqltuner and its been helpful. But it has consistently listed the number of fragmented tables at 207. In phpmyadmin I've selected all the tables and optimized them several times. It hasn't reduced the number of fragmented tables that mysqltuner reports. I think I am missing some important concept about how this all works. Does anyone have any suggestions to point me in the right direction or narrow down google searches or just generally help me be less clueless? Thanks!

• SQL Server 2008: Getting Login failed for user "Domain\User". Failed to open the explicitly specified database [CLIENT: IP.ADD.RR.ESS]

  This is a very similar issue to " SQL Server 2008 login problem with ASP.NET application: Failed to open the explicitly specified database " which unfortunately seems to have gone unsolved. My issue here is subtly different. Firstly the account failing login is not 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE' - it's an actual domain account. Secondly, there are two machines involved - I gathered from the first question it was a single machine running both the IIS and SQL instances. The application which is trying to connect to the database is an ASP.NET one running on another server (if that makes any different, I'm not sure it does.) The ConnectionString being used in the web.config for the application is : data source=MySQLServer;initial catalog=MyDatabase;integrated security=sspi; And the Application Pool is set to NetworkService for Identity. So - in the web app, I get the following error : Cannot open database "MyDatabase" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$' In the SQL Server logs I see : Login failed for user 'MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: Web.Server.IP.Address] Running this bit of SQL against the database in question : USE [MyDatabase] GO SELECT SDP.name AS [User Name], SDP.type_desc AS [User Type], UPPER(SDPS.name) AS [Database Role] FROM sys.database_principals SDP INNER JOIN sys.database_role_members SDRM ON SDP.principal_id=SDRM.member_principal_id INNER JOIN sys.database_principals SDPS ON SDRM.role_principal_id = SDPS.principal_id Gets me this result : MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DDLADMIN MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DATAREADER MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DATAWRITER Which appears to me to indicate I've got the permissions right. Anyone have any idea why it's not working, or how I can narrow the issue down some more?

• How do I restrict the Open/Save dialog in Windows to one folder?

  I spend a significant amount of time helping non-techies use their PC's. I realized most of that time is spent trying to explain to them how the Windows folder hierarchy works, where the "open file" dialog is pointing now, and how to find that Word document they saved. All this time, they're telling me they "just want to print the file". They refuse to learn how to read the PC screen, try to memorize a fixed set of steps, and end up calling me back to tell me their files disappeared again. I realize it's not productive to try to restrict where PC apps (e.g. Quicken) store files. But if there was a Windows utility I could turn on or off that would restrict the Open/Save dialogs in Windows apps, my noob user friends and I would save an enormous amount of time. The goal would be to have all files whose locations are chosen by the Save dialog saved to one folder, and have the Open dialog always point to that folder, until the utility is turned off. Does such a Windows utility exist?

• How to kill tasks in Windows 7 when even Task Manager won't open or respond?

  Occasionally one of my computers will get so bogged down that everything locks up, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work, Task Manager won't open, or they work, but are opening so slowly that it will take hours or days to shut down other processes and regain control of the computer, etc. Is there a way to, for instance, force Task Manager to be highest priority so it always opens immediately with Ctrl+Shift+Esc even when some other process/driver is hogging the CPU? Is there some other program that can run in the background and open immediately like this? This question isn't about fixing "underlying problems". No matter how much memory you have, it's still possible for a rogue process to eat it all up and lock up the computer in page fault thrashing, hog the CPU, etc. This question is about how to take back control of the computer when that happens. Basically when these kind of lock-ups happen, I want to open some kind of task manager that pauses every other process and allows me to kill one of them, and then let everything resume so I can save my work, etc. Otherwise my only option is to hold down the power button. Antifreeze is supposed to do exactly what i want, pausing all other applications and starting a task manager to kill the offender, but in my testing, it actually does neither.

• How to "drag and drop" folders or multiple HTML files into a browser and have them open in multiple tabs

  I save pages that I browse on the net and find interesting into a folder called C:\PageSaves Later, during the commute, I open these pages to see what they are and move them into a neatly categorized folder tree. For example, Perl related pages goto C:\Pages\Perl, MySQL related pages goto C:\Pages\MySQL and so on. I was wondering if there is any way I could open any number of HTML files on disc / inside a folder (C:\PageSaves in my case) into Mozilla/FF/K-Meleon etc For example, I would like to just "drag and drop" the folder C:\PageSaves into FireFox and have it open all the .html pages in the folder in a separate tab Right now, if I "drag and drop" multiple HTML files, it just opens the last file in the selection. Have a set of toolbar buttons, basically, a (the) plugin that should allow me to nuke the page (if I don't want to keep the page anymore) from disc or move the file (and its corresponding folder) into a predefined / new folder I am familiar with coding full blown FireFox plugins, so even if something very basic/almost similar exists, I can take it forward. Hints/clues/other methods of achieving the same result are all welcome!

• Why won't Google Chrome open Google Docs, and why is it slow with GMail?

  OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard: Google Chrome works like a charm most of the time. I have many extensions installed, and I've tried disabling/re-enabling them one by one to find a culprit, with no luck. Here are the problems: (1) Chrome is slow to load GMail. I am fairly sure that clearing the cache alleviates this problem. But I can open Safari, type in the URL, and login to GMail in the time it sometimes takes Chrome to open the page. Shouldn't caching help the page load?!? And sometimes even after recent cache clears it still is slow to load..... Thoughts? (2) Chrome won't open Google Docs at all. Safari does. Again, I tried disabling extensions one-by-one, and I allow cookies and even third-party cookies. But I still am told it has a redirect loop. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I bought a new one, reinstalled Windows on it, enabled Hyper-V feature and now I just need to open the VMs from the D:\VMs folder. However, I don't seem to be able to find a menu item or anything that would allow me to do that - the only thing I see is the "import" command which unfortunately requires the VMs to be explicitly exported (my machines weren't). I firmly believe that when I have all the files constituting a VM (the VHD file, some XML files describing the settings etc.) it must be somehow possible to just "open" these existing VMs in Hyper-V, right? What command am I missing? Edit: I know I can create a blank virtual machines and then just point them to use existing VHDs. However, I am not sure about all the different settings I've made to those VMs so I hope there's a way to simply open those existing VMs instead of recreating them.

• Can PPP CHAP authentication use Cisco "Type 5" MD5 passwords?

  Looking over Cisco's documentation, and RFC 1994 (PPP CHAP authentication), my initial guess is "no", because CHAP requires a cleartext password to rehash every time it sends a challenge. Is this true? If so, is there another way to configure CHAP so it doesn't use the easily-decoded type 7 passwords? The Cisco device in question uses local authentication, not a TACACS+ or RADIUS server. Would using RADIUS eliminate the problem or just move it to the RADIUS server?
