• Why do I get "General Failure" when pinging host name on a Win 7 node on the network?

  This is a very peculiar problem with a station on our network. The client pc is running Windows 7 Pro. What makes this problem interesting is that this client is the only node on the network that seems to be experiencing this proglem. When I try to ping a specific Win 08 server by host name, I get an IPv6 address and get General failure. But when I ping it's IPv4 address, it responds just fine. My first thought would check the DNS server the name resolutions to see what would be going on, but the problem begs the quesion, why does the station get an IPv6 address back and fails as opposed to using the IPv4 settings (which are static btw). What gives? I am including a screen shot of trying the one specific server and failing while trying another server with success. All other nodes on the network don't have problems communicating with the server the one station is having issues with.

But for HTTPS request, I lose the "forwardfor" information. I need to save the client IP address. How can I use HAproxy to load balance across a number of SSL servers, allowing those servers to know the client's IP address?

• Maximizing TCP connections on HAProxy load balancer

  I am currently using HAProxy in order to load balance tcp connections from clients to my Erlang app server. The connection is persistent, which means I'm limited to roughly 64K clients on an optimized server (I'm currently running HAProxy on an m1.large EC2 instance). My app server is designed to horizontally scale based on the number of TCP connections. What's worrying me though is I'll need an equal number of HAProxy servers as app servers since it's a 1:1 connection. Is there currently a way to "proxy" the tcp connection to the app server so that once HAProxy sends the client off to my Erlang server, it can free up the connection, ready to serve another client? Are there any papers, existing solutions out there I can read so that I only have to worry about the 64K limit on my app servers, and not on the load balancing servers themselves?

• Problem deploying GWT application on apache and tomcat using mod_jk

  I'm trying to deploy a GWT app on Apache using mod_jk connector. I have compiled the application and tested it on tomcat on the address localhost:8080/loginapp and it works ok. • Is having functionality in DB a road block to scalability?

  I may not be able to give the right title to the question. But here it is, We are developing financial portal for wealth management. We are expecting over 10000 clients to use the application. The portal calculates various performance analytics based on the the technical analysis of the stock market. We developed lot of the functionality through Stored procedures, user defined functions, triggers etc. through Database. We thought we can gain huge performance boost doing stuff directly in database than through C# code. And we actually did get a huge performance boost. When I tried to brag about the achievement to our CTO, he counter questioned my decision of having functionality implemented in database rather than code. According to him such applications suffer scalability problems. In his words "These days things are kept in memory/cache. Clustered data is hard to manage over time. Facebook, Google have nothing in database. It is the era of thin servers and thick clients. DB is used only to store plain data and functionality should be completely decoupled from the database." Can you guys please give me some suggestions as to whether what he says is right. How to go about architect such an application?

• DNS Resolution doesn't work after uninstalling Cisco VPN & Deterministic Network Enhancer in Win 7

  I just upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After trying various methods to get the Cisco VPN client to work, I gave up and decided to just run it in XP mode. The last steps I tried were in this article ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/d880dfe5-7f44-4955-8620-2a9355d8ea8b/ ) After that, I uninstalled the Cisco client and rebooted. I uninstalled the Deterministic Network Enhancer and rebooted again. Both uninstalled successfully, but now I'm not able to resolve any DNS. The only way I can resolve DNS is to reinstall the DNE, reboot, and uninstall the DNE. Then I am able to resolve DNS lookups until I reboot again. Once it's rebooted, no more DNS. Any ideas?

• Where to install JDBC drivers in Hyperic Server

  I have installed Hyperic Server 4.4.0 and I want to use an SQL plugin that connects to an Oracle database. To make this work on the Agent i had to download a JDBC driver for Oracle and put it in [agent-dir]/bundles/[bundle-dir]/pdk/lib. I can now run my plugin on the agent using java -jar hq-products.jar .... Now I want to add it so that it shows up in the server hq. I put the plugin in the appropriate directory and I can add it as a platform service. However, when i try to configure the plugin I get the following error: No suitable driver found for jdbc:oracle:thin:@blah.blah:blah:blah This is the same error I got on the client before I added the Oracle JDBC driver, so I assume that's the problem here too. But where do I put the JDBC drivers on the server?

• Should a stack trace be in the error message presented to the user?

  I've got a bit of an argument at my workplace and I'm trying to figure out who is right, and what is the right thing to do. Context: an intranet web application that our customers use for accounting and other ERP stuff. I'm of the opinion that an error message presented to the user (when things crash) should include as much information as possible, including the stack trace. Of course, it has to start with a nice "An Error has occurred, please submit the below information to the developers" in large, friendly letters. My reasoning is that a screenshot of the crashed application will often be the only easily available source of information. Sure, you can try to get a hold of the client's systems administrator(s), attempt to explain where your log files are, etc, but that will probably be slow and painful (talking to the client representatives mostly is). Also, having an immediate and full information is extremely useful in development, where you don't have to go hunting through the log files to find what you need on every exception. (But that could be solved with a configuration switch.) Unfortunately there has been some kind of "Security audit" (no idea how they did that without the sources... but whatever), and they complained about the full exception messages citing them as a security threat. Naturally, the clients (at least one that I know of) has taken this at face value and now demands that the messages be cleaned. I fail to see how a potential attacker could use a stack trace to figure anything out he couldn't have figured out before. Are there any examples, any documented proof of anyone ever doing that? I think that we should fight this foolish idea, but perhaps I'm the fool here, so... Who's right?

• Webserver on a rotating server with NAT IP or changing IPs

  i would have to elaborate my questions so please have patience Explaining the logic. if you are familiar with logmein then it installs a client software on your computer then it kinda keeps tracks where you computer is as long as it's connected to internet. So you can always access your computer no matter where it is whatever it's IP is you just go to logmein.com and then you can just access it. Now what i am asking 1. Let's assume i have a website hosted on my laptop let's call it webserver. so then i move around i have a new IP sometime even on a hotel network is it possible to do something like what logmein does so i can keep moving around my Webserver to new IP but it has some local client or something which keeps updating my IP or something i am sure i would need a gateway server somewhere which is connected to my domain name via DNS so somebody accessing my website www.mywebsite.com goes to my main server then gets routed to my laptop which could be anywhere but my gateway server is able to communicate to my webserver I will keep updating the case description based on comments to make more sense. please have patience with me. • ldap sync with outlook

  I have a task to research the possibilities of LDAP as a centralized Address Book. I have setup a openLDAP on debian 5.07. I managed to search the LDAP contacts from MS Outlook 2007 (with some drawbacks like Outlook cant recognize street and organization fields). My question is, is it possible ,& how, to sync data on LDAP server with applications that support LDAP? I could not find any data on this topic. EDIT: The point is, to have a centralized list of contacts that can be sync with various applications, for instance Outlook, Thunderbird, Phonebook on mobile phones...etc The Question is, Is it possible to transfer (update) data on a client application from LDAP database and viceversa? So not to search LDAP server data, but to download contact that are not available in the client application (Outlook) and upload data to LDAP if the contact is in (Outlook) and not in LDAP database and the other way around, in other words synchronize.

• Parse java console output with awk

  Hi, I'm trying to use awk to parse an output generated by a java application, but it isn't working. It seems that the command after the pipe isn't able to get/see the data throwed by the java app. I'm executing the following command (with the return generated by the command): [root@localhost]# java -jar jmxclient.jar usr:pass host:port java.lang:type=Threading ThreadCount 06/11/2010 15:46:37 -0300 org.archive.jmx.Client ThreadCount: 103 What I need it's only the last part of the string. So I'm tryng to use awk (with pipe at the end of the line |awk -F ':' '{print $4}': [root@localhost]# java -jar jmxclient.jar usr:pass host:port java.lang:type=Threading ThreadCount|awk -F ':' '{print $4}' But the output isn't being parsed. It throws the entire string: 06/11/2010 15:46:37 -0300 org.archive.jmx.Client ThreadCount: 103 I also tryed to use |cut -f4 -d":" with the same result: the string isn't parsed. So my question is, how do I parse the output in order to get just the number at the end of the string? TIA, Bob

• Linux Bridge, Samba netbios name/hostname access

  I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems). This is the global section of my SMB.CONF [global] unix extensions = off os level = 20 netbios name = server guest account = nobody server string = 447 Server security = share #unix extensions = no #wins support = yes #wins server = 192.168.0.1 name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast interfaces bridge1 eth0 eth1 lo bind interfaces only = yes Can i access a bridged server using it's WINS name to access samba shares? • Does a portable secondary laptop LCD monitor exist?

  I'm looking to buy a portable secondary LCD monitor for my Macbook Pro, does anything like that exist? I found some laptops that provide a dual 15'' monitor solution (but it's already baked into the hardware). Also some ideas posted about creating this type of setup back in 2007. I'm looking for something that is as thin as a laptop LCD (with maybe a bulky power supply that I could easily daisy chain or plug into a power strip along with my laptop). How difficult would it be to buy a 17'' laptop screen and hook up a DVI connector and power supply, and build a simple monitor stand for it? I've gotten to used to a dual-monitor setup at work and at home with my laptop that having to use my laptop in single-screen mode makes me feel crippled.

• Software Design Idea for multi tier architecture

  I am currently investigating multi tier architecture design for a web based application in MVC3. I already have an architecture but not sure if its the best I can do in terms of extendability and performance. The current architecure has following components DataTier (Contains EF POCO objects) DomainModel (Contains Domain related objects) Global (Among other common things it contains Repository objects for CRUD to DB) Business Layer (Business Logic and Interaction between Data and Client and CRUD using repository) Web(Client) (which talks to DomainModel and Business but also have its own ViewModels for Create and Edit Views for e.g.) Note: I am using ValueInjector for convering one type of entity to another. (which is proving an overhead in this desing. I really dont like over doing this.) My question is am I having too many tiers in the above architecure? Do I really need domain model? (I think I do when I exposes my Business Logic via WCF to external clients). What is happening is that for a simple database insert it (1) create ViewModel (2) Convert ViewModel to DomainModel for Business to understand (3) Business Convert it to DataModel for Repository and then data comes back in the same order. Few things to consider, I am not looking for a perfect architecure solution as it does not exits. I am looking for something that is scalable. It should resuable (for e.g. using design patterns ,interfaces, inheritance etc.) Each Layers should be easily testable. Any suggestions or comments is much appriciated. Thanks,

• About the External Graphics Card and CPU usage

  Hi, We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration fo the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage? • Can I configure mod_proxy to use different parameters based on HTTP Method?

  I'm using mod_proxy as a failover proxy with two balance members. While mod_proxy marks dead nodes as dead, it still routes one request per minute to each dead node and, if it's still dead, will either return 503 to the client (if maxattempts=0) or retry on another node (if it's 0). The backends are serving a REST web service. Currently I have set maxattempts=0 because I don't want to retry POSTs and DELETEs. This means that when one node is dead, each minute a random client will receive a 503. Unfortunately, most of our clients are interpreting codes like 503 as "everything is dead" rather than "that didnt work but please try that again". In order to program some kind of automatic retry for safe requests at the proxy layer, I'd like to configure mod_proxy to use maxattempts=1 for GET and HEAD requests and maxattempts=0 for all other HTTP Methods. Is this possible? (And how? :)

What email address was the email sent to, how did IMCEMAILTO get there, and does it have any change of getting delivered?

• Starting with text based MUD/MUCK game

  I’ve had this idea for a video game in my head for a long time but I’ve never had the knowledge or time to get it done. I still don’t really, but I am willing to dedicate a chunk of my time to this before it’s too late. Recently I started studying Lua script for a program called “MUSH Client” which works for MU* telnet style text games. I want to use the GUI capabilities of Mush Client with a MU* server to create a basic game but here is my dilemma. I figured this could be a suitable starting place for me. BUT… Because I’m not very programmer savvy yet, I don’t know how to download/install/use the MU* server software. I was originally considering Protomuck because a few of the MU*s I were more impressed with began there. http://www.protomuck.org/ I downloaded it, but I guess I'm too used to GUI style programs so I'm having great difficulty figuring out what to do next. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? heh..
