• Creating a proper CMS thoughts

  I'm just about to expand the functionality of our own CMS but was thinking of restructuring the database to make it simpler to add/edit data types and values. Currently, the CMS is quite flat - the CMS requires a field in the database for every type of stored value. The first option that comes to mind is simply a table which keeps the data types (ie: Address 1, Suburb, Email Address etc) and another table which holds values for each of these data types. Just like how Wordpress keeps values in the 'options' table, serialize would be used to store an array of values. The second option is how Drupal works, the CMS creates tables for every data type. Unlike Wordpress, this can be a bit of an overkill but really useful for SQL queries when ordering and grouping by a particular value. What's everyone's thoughts?

• Best resources to learn Game Development from a Java background?

  Hi guys, I'm an enterprise Java programmer, however something I've been interested in and what got me into the whole programming thing was the idea of being able to create a game. Just wondering if anybody could offer any advice, or book recommendations. The side I am most interested in is game engine design and implementation. People may say "ahh but plenty exist why write your own" - its purely for learning purposes, seeing how things work and so on. So far I've taken a look at LWJGL, but achieved nothing too serious. • An attempt has been made to Attach or Add an entity that is not new Linq to Sql error

  I have a save function for my order entity that looks like this and it breaks on the sumbmitChanges line: public void SaveOrder ( Order order ) { if (order.OrderId == 0) orderTable.InsertOnSubmit(order); else if (orderTable.GetOriginalEntityState(order) == null) { orderTable.Attach(order); orderTable.Context.Refresh(RefreshMode.KeepCurrentValues , order); } orderTable.Context.SubmitChanges(); } The order entity contains two other entities; an Address entity and a credit card entity. Now i want these two entities to be null sometimes. Now my guess for why this is throwing an error is because that both of these entites that are inside order are null. If this is the case, How can I insert an new order into the database with both entities (Address and creditCard) being null.

• Geocoding non-addresses: Geopy

  Using geopy to geocode alcohol outlets in NZ. The problem I have is that some places do not have street addresses but are places in Google Maps. For example, plugging: Furneaux Lodge, Endeavour Inlet, Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough 7250 into Google Maps via the browser GUI gives me However, using that in Geopy I get a GQueryError saying this geographic location does not exist. Here is the code for geocoding: def GeoCode(address): g=geocoders.Google(domain="maps.google.co.nz") geoloc = g.geocode(address, exactly_one=False) place, (lat, lng) = geoloc[0] GeoOut = [] GeoOut.extend([place, lat, lng]) return GeoOut GeoCode("Furneaux Lodge, Endeavour Inlet, Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlboroguh 7250") Meanwhile, I notice that "Eiffel Tower" works fine. Is there away to solve this and can someone explain the difference between The Eiffel Tower and Furneaux Lodge within Google 'locations'?

• application authentication design ideas

  Hello I am working with on an app that uses wpf / silverlight on the front end and nhibernate on the back end, and looking for some design ideas to address authentication; I was looking at Rhino Security which I think is pretty slick and certainly useful, but doesn't in and of itself seem to address authentication. That said, I am looking for something of a technology agnostic overview of authentication design issues at this point. Does anyone have any links and / or experiences with an authentication design that is relatively easy to adapt to different common technologies. Cheers, Berryl

• Publishing my WCF Service to my webhotel provider

  I have made a small log service that i want to publish to a subdomain on my webhotel. I make the wcf service and test it locally - no problem. I then go to the [Build] menu and choose [Publish], type in my FTP location and publishes it to the location. No problems. The problem arise when i need to use it, i try to navigate to the .svc file but gets this error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. Parameter name: item What am I doing wrong?

• How do you learn a new programming language?

  I am C++ developer with some good experience on it. When I try to learn a new language ( have tried Java, C#, python, perl till now) I usually pickup a book and try to read it. But the problem with this is that these books typically start with some very basic programming concepts such as loops, operators etc and it starts to get very boring soon. Also, I feel I would get only theoeritcal knowledge without any practical knowledge on writing the code. So my question is how do you tacke these situations? do you just skip the chapters if its explaining something basic? also, do you have some standard set of programs that you will try to write in every new programming language you try to learn?

• I studied electrical engineering. Can I work as a developer? [closed]

  A while ago I finished my Msc in Electrical Engineering and started working as an engineering consultant where I mostly do development work. I am good at picking up languages/technologies tools. I have fiddled with C/C++/C#/perl/ant/bash/html/css etc. Although I have never had a complain for my work, rather the contrary, I just feel that some day, someone will ask me a real hard task which would maybe seem rather trivial for a computer scientist but hard for me. Should I read/do something to become a better developer. Should I pick up a book about design patterns or algorithms for example? Is this normal that I have this kind of "fear"? • Math/numerical formula every computer programmer should know

  This is a follow-up question to What should every programmer know and Is mathematics necessary. So the question is, as a computer programmer, what is the most important/useful mathematical or numerical formula that you use? By Formula I mean anything that involves less obvious manipulations, whenever binomial coefficients or bit hacks. I work with multidimensional arrays and various matrix representations. So for me most commonly used formulas are: A(i,j,k,..) = a[i + j*Dim0 + k*Dim0*Dim1 + ... to map indexes to one dimension ( which is basic address calculation which many people do not seem to know). And triangular number T(i) = (i*i + i)/2 which is related to binomial coefficients, used to calculate address in triangular matrixes and many other things. What is your workhorse formula that you think programmer should know?

• Why does a computer science degree matter to a professional programmer?

  I have a degree in computer science. It has been great for opening doors, getting a job. As far as helping me in the professional field of C# .NET programming (the most popular platform and language in the area I work if not the entire united states on hands down the most popular OS in the world) its hardly useful. Why do you think it helps you as a programmer in your professional career (outside spouting off to prims algorithm to impress some interviewer)? In today's world adaptation, a quick mind, strong communication, OO and fundamental design skills enable a developer to write software that a customer will accept. These skills are only skimmed over in the cs program. In my mind, reading a 500 page C# book by Wrox offers far more useable a skillset than 4 years of the comp sci math blaster courses. Many disagree. So, why does a computer science degree matter?

• WCF Fails when using impersonation over 2 machine boundaries (3 machines)

  These scenarios work in their pieces. Its when i put it all together that it breaks. I have a WCF service using netTCP that uses impersonation to get the callers ID (role based security will be used at this level) on top of this is a WCF service using basicHTTP with TransportCredientialOnly which also uses impersonation I then have a client front end that connects to the basicHttp. the aim of the game is to return the clients username from the netTCP service at the bottom - so ultimatley i can use role based security here. each service is on a different machine - and each service works when you remove any calls they make to other services when you run a client for them both locally and remotley. IE the problem only manifests when you jump accross more than one machine boundary. IE the setup breaks when i connect each part together - but they work fine on their own. I also specify [OperationBehavior(Impersonation = ImpersonationOption.Required)] in the method and have IIS setup to only allow windows authentication (actually i have ananymous enabled still, but disabling makes no difference) This impersonation works fine in the scenario where i have a netTCP Service on Machine A with a client with a basicHttp service on machine B with a clinet for the basicHttp service also on machine B ... however if i move that client to any machine C i get the following error: The exception is 'The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. • PHP PDO: Fetching data as objects - properties assigned BEFORE __construct is called. Is this correc

  The full question should be "Is this correct or is it some bug I can't count on?" I've been working with PDO more and in particular playing with fetching data directly into objects. While doing so I discovered this: If I fetch data directly into an object like this: $STH = $DBH->prepare('SELECT first_name, address from people WHERE 1'); $obj = $STH->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_CLASS, 'person'); and have an object like this: class person { public $first_name; public $address; function __construct() { $this->first_name = $this->first_name . " is the name"; } } It shows me that the properties are being assigned before the __construct is being called -- because the names all have " is the name" appended. Is this some bug (in which case I can't/won't count on it) or is this The Way It Should Be. Because it's really quite a nice thing the way it works currently.

  Whats the best way to get started on iPhone development if you are an expeienced C++ or C# programmer? Most books either assume you know nothing or something. What are the steps to achieve this? For eg: first learn objective C (let's say), next learn cocoa... I am interested in books/resources. I read Getting started with iPhone development from Oreilly (the missing manuals book) but that just provided an over view on the programming and concentrated more on getting your app into the app store. I need need resources that will help be start coding. Other questions: How much of objective C do you need to know? How do go ahead with learning the cocoa framework? Can I directly start on cocoa touch or do I need to know the MAC cocoa framework first? Inputs from someone who was in the same situation (Know c++/c# but no clue about mac programming/objective c/cocoa) would help greatly.

• What is this chargeback scam from eBooks bought on my website?

  We have a scammer that is buying our e-Books and then performing chargebacks. Our e-Books don't have DRM, so if they wanted to resell them, they would only need to buy each book once. But instead, they keep buying the same books over and over again and then performing hundreds of chargebacks. We have created some additional rules in our fraud protection tools to block certain aspects, even though all the info looks legit, and are hopeful this will slow them down. But my question is: What is the scam? If they aren't getting any product and they only get chargebacks for something they already purchased, then they can't get additional money from the credit card company, so then what's their motivation?

  I have been coding PHP for about 2 years now and I THINK that I have a very good grasps of the fundamental parts of PHP, i.e. Functions foreach/IF statements sessions/cookies POST/GET Amongst a few others. I want to move on to learning OOP PHP now, so learning how to use classes and making it a really valuable skill. I have 1 requirement, the source must be a respected source that doesn't teach developers bad habits. I have the book: PHP and MySQL Web Development However, as useful as that is I would like an online source. I would like to know from people with experience in OOP PHP, how and where did they learn OOP PHP. Obviously by doing, but I would really appreciate some great resources which help me along the way.

• accessing google maps via UIWebView - illegal?

  New to iPhone development. Working on first app. I'm accessing google maps via UIWebView to forward geocode an address using "http://maps.google.com/maps?q=my address". It works, although it has this quirk of requiring you to hit "Back" button and then the "Detail" button (provided by the navigation bar) to get back to the screen from whence you started. If anyone knows why it does this, I'd love to hear. My real question, however, is this a legal use of google maps? Since I intend this app for commercial use, am I violating Google's rules + regs? If it is illegal, what's my alternative? Thanks.

• A web framework where AJAX was not an after thought

  AJAX is a pain in the ass because it essentially means you'll have to write two sets of similarish code: one for browsers with JavaScript enabled and those without. Not only this, but you have to connect JavaScript events to hook into your models and display the results. And if all that weren't bad enough, you need to send an address change with the request, otherwise the user won't be able to "click back" correctly (if confused look at what happens to the address bar when you click links in GMail). We're searching for something that had the foresight and design goals with all these concerns in mind. Performance and security are also obvious major concerns. We love config-based systems as well, where you don't have to write a lot of code you just drop it into an easily read config format. It's like asking for the holy grail right?

  I have often enjoyed the use of analogies in understanding a software scenario or problem. For example, to understand the concept of public key encryption, the 'locked mailbox' analogy or similar is often used as an aid: An analogy for public-key encryption is that of a locked mailbox with a mail slot. The mail slot is exposed and accessible to the public; its location (the street address) is in essence the public key. Anyone knowing the street address can go to the door and drop a written message through the slot; however, only the person who possesses the key can open the mailbox and read the message. My question is: What analogies have you used or heard of in your career that have given you that "Eureka" moment with a complex concept? • jquery tabIndex fix

  On my pages(ASP.NET 3.5) where all input controls have tab order set whenever next input control is not enabled or hidden it goes to the address bar and then to next available control. To fix this behavior, i.e. make it land to the next available control w/o going to address bar I am trying to use jQuery: $(':text,textarea,select').blur(function() { $(this).next(':text, textarea, select').filter(':enabled:visible').focus(); }); But it still goes to the adress bar in some cases. What do I need to correct here?

• Why were annotations introduced in Spring and Hibernate?

  I would like to know why were annotations introduced in Spring and Hibernate? For earlier versions of both the frameworks book authors were saying that if we keep configuration in xml files then it will be easier to maintain (due to decoupling) and just by changing the xml file we can re-configure the application. If we use annotations in our project and in future we want to re-configure application then again we have to compile and build the project. So why were these annotations introduced in these frameworks? From my point of view annotations make the apps dependent on certain framework. Isn't it true?
