• Is this the correct way of speaking to a "Content Manager" Class?

  I am creating a silverlight site. I am currently breaking out my ideas into pieces of functionality. One of the idea's I have is the concept of a content manager. This is essentially a UI control with 4 regions. Top, Bottom, Right & Left. I also have a collection of objects that are considered "Menu Items". These are controls that function as a way to navigate around, similar to links. The idea I have is to implement an IMenuItem interface. Among the standard pieces of information (Text, PageReference, etc) I was also going to hold a reference to the content manager. My idea behind this thinking is that I can pass the PageReference to a property on the ContentManager and then call a method which knows how to update the content manager accordingly. Is this the best way of implementing this or is their some sort of pattern for it?

• Sharepoint and Cross-Site Lookup

  Hi all I have this scenario I want to build two sharepoint 2007 sites. One for customers info and the other for products and customers orders. Now the problem is that in the second site I need to reference the customers info from the first site but unfortunately sharepoint doesnot provide out of the box cross-site lookup. I did some search and found custom cross-site fields and used one but when I upgraded the site to sharepoint 2010 this custom field was not compatible and the upgrade wizard said it could not be upgraded. so what is the solution for this ? is it to merge the two sites so that I can use the standard lookup feature or is there any workaround for this ? please if any body has faced such a scenario, share the solution with me ? thanks

• How to solve/hack fading semi-transparent PNG bug in IE8?

  As you know, IE6 has bug that can't display semi-transparent PNG file without using non-standard style like filter. In IE7, this problem is fixed. But It still has some bug about PNG file. It can't correctly display fading semi-transparent PNG file. You can clearly see it when you use show/hide function in jQuery with semi-transparent PNG file. The background of image is displayed with non-transparent black color. Do you have any idea for solve this question by using jQuery. Update Let's see my testing As you see, IE8 always incorrectly displays PNG-24 image. Moreover, IE8 still correctly display PNG-8 image when I fade(jQuery.fadeOut function) it only. • Sparse matrices / arrays in Java

  I'm working on a project, written in Java, which requires that I build a very large 2-D sparse array. Very sparse, if that makes a difference. Anyway: the most crucial aspect for this application is efficency in terms of time (assume loads of memory, though not nearly so unlimited as to allow me to use a standard 2-D array -- the key range is in the billions in both dimensions). Out of the kajillion cells in the array, there will be several hundred thousand cells which contain an object. I need to be able to modify cell contents VERY quickly. Anyway: Does anyone know a particularly good library for this purpose? It would have to be Berkeley, LGPL or similar license (no GPL, as the product can't be entirely open-sourced). Or if there's just a very simple way to make a homebrew sparse array object, that'd be fine too. I'm considering MTJ, but haven't heard any opinions on its quality. Thanks!! -Dan

• Redirect output to file

  Hi, I have a shell script which is currently running and was running from past 8 hours. It will complete only by tomorrow evening. At the end of the program, it will print 2 million words to standard output. I am running the program on the screen. I forgot to redirect the output to a file. I know I won't be able to copy the data from the window. Is there a way to output the command to a file. I don't want to restart the program. Any thoughts?? Thank you. Bala

• ASP .NET: SQL Server Money Type and .NET Currency Type

  MS SQL Server's Money Data Type seems to accept a well formatted currency value with no problem (example: $52,334.50) From my research MS SQL Sever just ignores the "$" and "," characters. ASP .NET has a parameter object that has a Type/DbType property and Currency is an available option to set as a value. However, when I set the parameter Type or DbType to currency it will not accept a value like $52,334.50. I receive an error "Input string was not in a correct format." when I try to Update/Insert. If I don't include the "$" or "," characters it seems to work fine. Also, if I don't specify the Type or DbType for the parameter it seems to work fine also. Is this just standard behavior that the parameter object with its Type set to currency will still reject "$" and "," characters in ASP .NET? • Rails migration to add boolean column to Postgres on Heroku

  I'm trying to execute a simple Rails migration to add a boolean column to an existing table. Here's the add_column call: add_column :users, :soliciting, :boolean, :null => false, :default => false However, after the migration runs (successfully, with no errors), I don't see the new column. If I go into the console and list the columns on the User table, for example, with this command: >> User.columns.each { |c| puts "#{c.name} : #{c.type}" } All the other columns show up, but not the one I just added with the migration. What's even more strange is that looking up a random user object yields the Postgres version of booleans (Ruby strings) >> User.find(1).soliciting => "t" However, the existing boolean columns all show up with standard Ruby boolean values of true and false. What's going on here? Is the migration actually complete? Why doesn't the column show up, yet is accessible in the model objects?

  Hi I have a special requirement for one of my applications where I need the servers nounce (Handshaker.srv_random) when verifying the client certificate. Yet JSSEs X509TrustManager only passes me the certificate, no other information of the handshake. I have located the place, where checkClientTrusted is called (inside ServerHandshaker) and it would be easy to extend it to also allow some X509CustomTrustManager to be called with all required information. Yet this would require me to recompile JSSE... I also found jsse sources in openjdk. Now for my questions: What is the easiest way to compile jsse from openjdk? Can the resulting jsse.jar be used as a replacement for the (original) sun jre as a replacement for the included jsse.jar? Is there another (more standard compliant) way to archive what I am trying to do? I did not find a hook to use my own handshaker... Regards, Steffen

Today I came across a naming rule for static fields, namely prefixing with an underscore ie. private static string _myString; Is this really the standard way to name static variables? If so is it just personal preference and style, or does it have some sort of lower level impact? Eg Compilation JIT etc? Where does this style originate from? I have always associated it with C++, is that correct?

• How can I use a custom ValidationAttribute to ensure two properties match?

  We're using xVal and the standard DataAnnotationsValidationRunner described here to collect validation errors from our domain objects and view models in ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to have a way to have that validation runner identify when two properties don't match through the use of custom DataAnnotations. Right now I'm forced into doing it outside of the runner, this way: if (!(model.FieldOne == model.FieldTwo)) errors.Add(new ErrorInfo("FieldTwo", "FieldOne must match FieldTwo", model.FieldTwo)); My question is: can this be done using property-level validation attributes, or am I forced into using class-level attributes (in which case, I'd have to modify the runner...and my follow up question would be how best to retrieve them in that case). • Python serialize lexical closures?

  Is there a way to serialize a lexical closure in Python using the standard library? pickle and marshal appear not to work with lexical closures. I don't really care about the details of binary vs. string serialization, etc., it just has to work. For example: def foo(bar, baz) : def closure(waldo) : return baz * waldo return closure I'd like to just be able to dump instances of closure to a file and read them back. Edit: One relatively obvious way that this could be solved is with some reflection hacks to convert lexical closures into class objects and vice-versa. One could then convert to classes, serialize, unserialize, convert back to closures. Heck, given that Python is duck typed, if you overloaded the function call operator of the class to make it look like a function, you wouldn't even really need to convert it back to a closure and the code using it wouldn't know the difference. If any Python reflection API gurus are out there, please speak up.

• Receiving "MERGE" 200 OK error when committing using trac-post-commit-hook

  When running a commit with the trac-post-commit-hook I receive a MERGE 200 OK error, I understand that this means that the commit has succeeded on the server but the file status has not updated on my local machine. But I can't find anyway to fix this issue. Would this be a problem with my setup or something in the script. I'm using stock standard script from the trac site, I'm committing through tortoiseSVN to VisualSVN Server which is hosted on a windows 2008 server. When I run the script through a command line I receive no errors, I only receive this error through TortoiseSVN.

• Eclipse: Subclipse "Edit Conflicts"

  I have found that when using Subclipse to edit conflicts, all my syntax color settings are preserved except for the background color, which is reset to the standard white. Using my particular color scheme makes it almost impossible to read any of the text when stuck with a white background. Is there anywhere I can change this default background color? There doesn't seem to be any way to do this from the preferences window, but perhaps there is a config file somewhere I could edit? Any help would be very much appreciated (my eyes will thank you too)!

• WPF tabcontrol styling

  I've got a UI with a fairly standard look and feel. It has a column of icons on the left side which when clicked open a different user control on the right side. Currently I'm using separate controls for the selection icons and the usercontrol containment. I'm having strange focus issues that I am tired of trying to mitigate and am wondering if I could style a tabcontrol to look like my UI (under the assumption a tabcontrol would not have focus issues when navigating tabs). Here is a screenshot of the basic UI. The styling is mostly about how to get the tabcontrols page selection to look like my column of icons. Anyone want to throw their hat in the ring as to how I might accomplish this with a tabcontrol? My xaml is pretty weak at this point.

• Mac OS X, MySQL Preference Pane doesn't work

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

• Cfsearch in combination of documents and indexed query data?

  hi! I have an application which stores all kind of data about people. The current cfsearch functionality (in Verity) includes searching documents that are attached to these people. If i have 2 documents attached to 1 person, 1 with say ABC in it and the other with XYZ in it, my ideal searchresult for "ABC AND XYZ" would return the 1 person. But as both 'words' are indexed in different documents, the standard behaviour is not to return any result from the cfsearch, because the combination doesnt exist in any of the 2 documents. Is there any way to combine indexed documents and/or query data in a way that the search is executed in the combination of relevant docs and data? In my application that would mean that i could index all documents and data regarding people and have an intelligent 'global' search to find the right person. any pointers and help very much appreciated! (should Solr offer new possibilities in comparison to Verity, no problem!) thanks! Bart

• Extending a DropDownList control

  I have a rather large application that has literally a hundred DDLs with Yes / No ListItems. In an attempt to same myself some time, I created a Custom Control that extends the standard DDL. It all seems to work fine but I am having some issues when assigning the SelectedValue property in code where the selected value does not seem to have an affect on the control. I wonder if I should be adding my items during Init or PagePreLoad? Should I be calling base.OnInit before or after I add the list items? This mostly works but not 100%.   Which parts of the framework require a user to be more than a Standard User? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to compile a list of possible issues with our existing applications when migrating to Windows 7. Now, I can think of a few things myself: Writing to Eventlog Writing to Registry Keys outside of Current_User scope Getting an Environment variable etc... I really would like a more complete list and so far I've not come across a decent resource in which all this stuff is listed. Note that I'm not looking for ways of elevating the priviliges for the exsiting apps (which can be done by using a manifes), I'm simply idenitifying actions in code that might cause issues.

• Batch file conversion to vbscript

  I need to convert a batch file to vbscript but am unfamiliar with both. If I can understand what is going on in the batch file I can work out the vbscript easy enough. Problem is the batch file runs a few cscript commands which is supposed to have a syntax of cscript [script name] [host options] [script arguments] However whomever wrote the batch file doesn't use it in a standard manner so if someone could explain the use of the command I can work out the rest. • Best practice to display POI in iPhone's MapKit?

  Assuming I have a database of POI with their respective coordinates (longitude & latitude). What would be the "standard" way to display the POI as annotations around the user's current location? To elaborate: Given a zoom level, I guess I have to search through the database for all POI whose distance to the current location < a certain threshold, then create annotations for them. Or is there any smarter way? If the user zooms in/out, moves the map... I will need to redo the whole thing again? It seems that MapKit has a mechanism to cache/reuse annotations. Should I create a lot of them right away and let MapKit decides what to render when the visible region changes? I guess this would make the transition smoother, but also consumes more memory. What is your experience with this? Thanks.

• iPhone Settings app and keyboard control?

  So I'm putting my app's preference settings into the Settings app. One of the settings is an edit text field (PSTextFieldSpecifier). When touched, the keyboard dutifully appears, I can make the edits, but when I press Return....nothing. Well, the editing is completed, but the keyboard remains. I see no way to make the keyboard go away. I also notice this same behavior in other Settings panes, including those from Apple. Do I assume correctly that this is just standard behavior and I need to just accept the fact that my Settings table has now been reduced to half size, and just deal? Furthermore, I gather there is no approved way to have a "rich" child pane display, such as that seen in Settings-General-About-Legal? Or a way to do what appears to be a -presentModalViewController, a la Settings-General-Passcode Lock?
