  • Bad Screen Flicker from video recording of recordmydesktop

    I have ubuntu 11.10 and I installed recordmydesktop. Video recording from recordmydesktop always result in screen flicker. In recording I see half of the screen moving forward while half would be stuck. I checked the settings and "Frame per Second" is set to 15 One such recording is available here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QafF44m2Ttk&feature=youtu.be I am quite new to Ubuntu and not sure what is wrong.

Surprised to find I was not the owner and that there is a password that locks me out. I only set one password during set up so what is this mysterious password.     I installed ubuntu from wubi using a live cd but when i booted i just got a black screen so i followed the instructions from this forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10089820&postcount=8 which successfully completed the ubuntu installation but now when i boot ubuntu i just get a command prompt. when i type in startx it comes up with an error.     I have Ubuntu 12.10 and when I try to install a new software using the software center, it fails with the following error message: Authentication Error Software cannot be installed or removed because the authentication service is not available.(org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed:("system-bus-name",{name:1.475}).org.debian.apt.install-or-remove-packages This is a new problem that I did not have before!     I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty and when I installed it I had a problem with blank screen on startup and found a solution but I have the same problem when it is inactive and goes blank screen, it won't come back, so I have to restart.   • Cannot install gnome shell extensions

    I upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04, install gnome 3 and remove unity. My gnome version is 3.4.1. The GNOME Shell extensions is installed and enabled. When I use firefox to visit each extension page in https://extensions.gnome.org/, for example, https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5/alternative-status-menu/, there is no where to install the extensions. I am told that one can install extensions by visite these extension pages. This is the guide I followed.

  • How to Make Ubuntu Play MP3 Files

    Because of licensing issues, Ubuntu is unable to play MP3s out of the box. We’ll show you how to play MP3s and other restricted file formats in about four mouse clicks. The philosophy behind Ubuntu is that software should be free and accessible to all. Whether MP3 and other file formats are free is unclear in many countries, so Ubuntu does not include software to read these file formats by default. Fortunately, it does include a package that installs the most commonly used file formats all at once, including a Flash plugin for Firefox. Note: These instructions are for Ubuntu 10.04. There are small differences for earlier versions of Ubuntu. Play MP3 Files Open the Ubuntu Software Center, found in the Applications menu.   Click on View and ensure that All Software is selected. Type “restricted extras” into the search box at the top-right. Find the Ubuntu restricted extras package and click Install. Enter your password when prompted. Once the install is complete, close out of Ubuntu Software Center, and you’ll be able to play MP3 files! To confirm this, we’ll open up Rhythmbox, found in the Sound & Video section of the Applications menu. Our test MP3 plays with no problems! Note: If Rhythmbox tells you that MP3 plugins are not installed, close Rhythmbox and reopen it. You should not have to install anything extra through Rhythmbox.   Despite this extra step, playing the most common audio and video file formats – including Flash videos on the internet – is simple.   • MVVM Light Toolkit V3 SP1 for Windows Phone 7

    He he I start to sound like Microsoft… Anyway… I just released a service pack (SP1) for MVVM Light Toolkit V3. Why? Well mostly because I worked a bit more with the Windows Phone 7 tools that were released at MIX0, and I noticed a few things that could be better in the Windows Phone 7 template. Also, I only found out at MIX that you can actually install custom project templates for Visual Studio Express. For some reason I thought it was not possible. The best way to solve these issues is through a service pack, which consists of a few zip files. Simply follow the instructions on the “Installing Manually” page. You can go ahead and overwrite the files that were installed with V3, all the file structure and names are exactly the same. What? So what do you get in this service pack that was not already in V3? (for more info about what’s new in V3, check the What’s New page). Project and Item templates for Visual Studio 10 Express (phone edition). Unzip these files in your “My Documents” folder, and you can now create a new MVVM Light application in the WinPhone7 version of Visual Studio 2010 Express. Signed assemblies: All the assemblies are now signed, which is a requirement in certain build configurations. XML documentation files: Thanks to Matt Casto for pinging me and reminding me that I had forgotten to include them (doh). New and improved Windows Phone 7 assemblies and templates: This one deserves its own section (see below). What was wrong with the old Silverlight 3 assemblies in Windows Phone 7 projects? It was kind of weird. Functionality wise, it was working just right. However, if you noticed, the EventToCommand behavior was not visible in the Assets tab of Expression Blend, under Behaviors, where it should normally have been. The reason was that even though the Windows Phone 7 is using Silverlight 3, the System.Windows.Interactivity that Blend was expecting is the version that is normally used in Silverlight 4. Yeah, I know, it’s weird. This led me to create a specific version of these assemblies for the phone. The assemblies are located into C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries\WP7. There are 3 DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.WP7.dll with RelayCommand, Messenger and ViewModelBase GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.WP7.dll with EventToCommand and DispatcherHelper System.Windows.Interactivity.dll which is the same DLL installed in the Blend SDK, and which is needed for the EventToCommand behavior to work.     I followed the advice of izx on how to install TexLive 2012 using the texlive-backports PPA. Before I started I removed all TexLive-related packages. The installation finished and everything seems to work fine. The only thing I noticed are some warnings in the output of the installer.     Screenshot I created this small app as a weekend hack. It shows the reputations, upvotes, downvotes and accepted answers for a user against the tags for the answers. About I wanted to know how may upvotes I was away from getting the bronze badge for the clojure tag. But I could not find any straightforward way of doing that. So I wrote this app (in Clojure, of course). The SO API is used for the data and the charts are created using the Google Chart API. The charts are opened in the default browser. License Licensed under EPL 1.0. Download If you have Clojure and Leiningen installed, you can simply get the code from https://gist.github.com/725331, save it as socharts.clj and then run lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main)" for launching the Swing UI If you don't have Clojure installed, but have Java then download the standalone jar from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5247/socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar and run it as javaw -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar Once the UI is launched, just type your user id in the input box and press <ENTER>. It will take some time to download the data from the SO API (the progress bar shows the download progress) and then it will open the charts in your default browser. You can also run it as a command line app by running lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main <userid>)" or java -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar <userid> where you replace <userid> with your user id. Be warned that because of a missing feature in the SO API, it will fetch the data for each question you have answered. So the maximum limit is 10000 answers (the SO API call limit).   • How do I use my headphones and microphone?

    Hello, The headphones and microphone on my Ubuntu 10.10 work fine. But when I start an audio conversation using empathy or pidgin, my computer hangs, the microphone doesn't work, and I can't record anything. I have tried sudo alsa force-reload, I have installed pavucontrol, but nothing works. I can't increase the volume of the headphones and master channel using alsamixer though they are unmuted. (Everything works fine in Fedora and Windows XP.) How do I fix this? Thank you.

    I installed some new fonts following this guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Fonts. Netbeans and LibreOffice do not recognize the new fonts in /usr/share/fonts and Mousepad recognizes them. Netbeans7.4(from Netbeans.com) recognizes the fonts if they are located in .fonts/ in my home folder. How can I make Netbeans and Libre Office recognize the new fonts located in /usr/share/fonts. I am using Xubuntu 13.10

    Do you have a Windows computer that needs to be synced with the Ubuntu systems connected to your Ubuntu One account? Not a problem. Just grab a copy of the Ubuntu One Desktop Client and in just a few minutes your Windows system will be feeling the Ubuntu love. Once you get the desktop client installed you will see a new System Tray Icon waiting for you. Access the Context Menu and select Add this computer to start the syncing process. Enter your account details into the login window that appears and click Connect to Ubuntu One. Go back to the System Tray Icon, access the Context Menu, and select Synchronize Now. You can monitor the progress as small desktop notification messages keep you updated during the synchronizing process. The newly synchronized files will be placed in an Ubuntu One Folder under Documents/My Documents. Here is a quick peek at the Preferences Window.
