• Image size guidelines

  Hi all, This may well be a little of an open-ended question The site I am working on requires to be optimised for performance. One of the key areas is to optimise the file sizes of the images used upon the site. Unfortunatley these images are being created by employees who do not have the required knowledge for creating images for the web, and it is my job to produce a set of guidelines for them to use. I was wondering whether there was any resource/guidlines/literature regarding typical images file sizes for images of different dimensions - as I would like to include something like this to aid them to ensure their images are being created properly. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

• Find location of current m-file in Matlab

  I'm working on my Matlab code in a number of different locations and it would really help if I could make the code aware of its location on the computer. I think there is a function that gives me exactly this information, but I can't remember what it is called or find it on Google. The idea is that I have a function myFunc that needs a file in its own directory, which can be in different locations on different computers. So in myFunc I want to do something like this: dir = theFunctionImLookingFor; system(fullfile(dir, 'someApp.exe')); (it could also be that the function I'm looking for doesn't return the directory, but the directory + m-file name, but that makes little difference to me) Thanks for any help!

• Zend Framework Relations vs. Table Select

  Hey! I just want to know your guys opinion on using join tables within the zend framework. Of course you can use relations by defining a referenceMap and dependentTables and stuff, or using setIntegrityCheck(false) within a db select(). The setIntegrityCheck version seems a little bit dirty to me, but the other version is not very suitable for big querys and joining many tables... I'm a PHP developer for 5 years now and new to the zend framework and just want get a direction for my first project. Thanks!!!

• mac, java 1.5: javax.mail not recognized as a jar file

  hello fellow java developers, Having a little issue with creating a java application on a macintosh computer (snow leopard). I've set up my application in eclipse, added all of the appropriate jar files, but for some reason the code is not recognizing some of my variables as valid types. I've imported the libraries via import javax.mail.*; import javax.mail.internet.*; These libraries are not recognized by the application. BUT I've put them on the build path! Any advice on how to fix this?

• What's the most straightforward way to typeset MLA-style college essays in LaTeX?

  I've been using LaTeX for a little while now to typeset my algorithms homework, and I really like the quality of the output as well as the ease-of-use. I'd like to starting using LaTeX in other classes as well, but non–computer-science subjects have more stringent formatting requirements than I've come across in CS. Most classes that require essays want them to be formatted in MLA style, but I'm not sure what to best way to do that using LaTeX is. I've tried Googling "latex mla" and other similar things, but I've found many different MLA templates, and my LaTeX skills aren't good enough to determine which is the best. Is anyone else using LaTeX for "normal" essays, and, if so, how are you doing it?

• Turbogears 2 vs Django - any advice on choosing replacement for Turbogears 1?

  I have been using Turbogears 1 for prototyping small sites for the last couple of years and it is getting a little long in the tooth. Any suggestions on making the call between upgrading to Turbogears 2 or switching to something like Django? I'm torn between the familiarity of the TG community who are pretty responsive and do pretty good documentation vs the far larger community using Django.   I use this little snippet to halt my iPhone app in the simulator. NSAssert((0), @"Bail early while testing"); When I try to make it a #defined macro like this: #define BAILNOW (NSAssert((0), @"Bail early while testing")) I get this build error: error: expected expression before 'do' It seems to be related to the nesting of the NSAssert() macro but I'm at a loss as to how to get around it. Should I dig into the NSAssertionHandler docs or is there some simpler way to halt the app in it's tracks? Or should I just set a breakpoint and get on with my life?

• Getting a table's values into a tree

  So, I have a table like such: id|root|kw1|kw2|kw3|kw4|kw5|name 1| A| B| C| D| E| F|fileA 2| A| B| | | | |fileB 3| B| C| D| E| | |fileC 4| A| B| | | | |fileD (several hundred rows...) And I need to get it into a tree like the following: *A *B -fileB -fileD *C *D *E *F -fileA *B *C *D *E -fileC I'm pretty sure the table is laid out poorly but it's what I have to live with. I've read a little about Adjacency List Model & Modified Preorder Tree Traversal but I don't think my data is laid out correctly. I think this requires a recursive function, but I'm not at all sure how to go about that. I'm open to any ideas of how to get this done even if it means extracting the data into a new table just to process this. Are there any good options available to me or any good ways to do this? (Examples are a bonus of course)

• ASP.NET MVC Render Ajax / Standard View

  I am a little confused and making it alot more complicated than this needs to be! Here is what I have... A view which displays a drop down of US States. When the user chooses a state it loads a list of data from a database and returns the results (populates the View Model) and the View renders the information. What I wanted to do was have have the dropdown trigger an Ajax event which performs the data load, but also wanted it to depreciate if the user didn't have Javascript enabled. How would I go about rendering the view with AND without javascript / ajax? Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your help.

  I have an Xcode project with a directory structure like this: MasterProjectDir/projectname.xcodeproj MasterProjectDir/ProjectSubDir/whatever.c MasterProjectDir/ProjectSubDir/etc.c MasterProjectDir/ProjectSubDir/Makefile My xcodeproj uses an external build target to point to the Makefile using these settings: Build Tool: /usr/bin/make Arguments: $(ACTION) Directory: ./ProjectSubDir For various reasons, I need to change the project directory structure to look like this: MasterProjectDir/projectname.xcodeproj MasterProjectDir/whatever.c MasterProjectDir/etc.c MasterProjectDir/Makefile I copied the .xcodeproj file into the ProjectSubDir and the project somehow still knows where to look for the files (?!?! - this is odd because their location is set as "relative to group" and I've just moved the xcodeproj file). It won't build. I get the following error: make: * No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. Command /usr/bin/make failed with exit code 2 I could use a little help on this. There must be a setting I need to change somewhere.

• Java Sound Clip Looping Frame Position

  Hi, I have a little problem with a loopting clip: If you have a soundfile e.g. 20000 samples long, the frame position will not reset after looping, so I get values that are "out of bounds" of the original soundfile. As I want to draw a position marker on my waveform, I'm a bit confused how to achive. At this time I just get myClip.getLongFramePosition() but this does not work as described above. Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Is there a possibility to count how often a clip was looped before? Regards

When done, press shortcut which runs python and copies contents of current file to console. Proposed solution forces to press excess keystrokes (Ctrl+S, Alt+Tab) and create additional files. I hope I have put it clear.

  Hey guys, How can I figure out which word is at the point where the user tapped on a UIWebView? I am able to detect the CGPoint for the tap (subclassing UIWindow like this), and I can actually get the DOM element on that point using javascript. But I know very little of javascript and DOM to figure out how can I actually get which word the user tapped on. Is that possible? • .Net LoginControls - User can't logout in Firefox

  Basically, the logout link doesn't do anything, but only in Firefox. (I can login and out freely from other browsers) There really isn't a whole lot of information I can really give other than that, since I'm still new to this project and .net as a whole, and know almost nothing about the login controls. So if someone else has experienced a similar issue in the past, and can recognize the issue with the little info I have, that would be great! If not, sorry for the lack of depth, but its all I have.   RegEx is powerful - it is tru but I have a little - query for you I want to parse out the FUNCTIONS from some old code in JS...however - I am RegEx handicapped (mentally deficient in grasping the subtleties).. the issue that makes me NOT EVEN TRY - is two fold - 1) myVar = function(x){ yadda yadda } AND function myVar(x) { yadda yadda } are found throuout - COLD I write a parser for each? sure - but that seems inefficient... 2) MANY things may reside INSIDE the {} including OTHER sets of {} or other Functions(){} block of text... • Best way to test instance methods without running __init__

  I've got a simple class that gets most of its arguments via init, which also runs a variety of private methods that do most of the work. Output is available either through access to object variables or public methods. Here's the problem - I'd like my unittest framework to directly call the private methods called by init with different data - without going through init. What's the best way to do this? So far, I've been refactoring these classes so that init does less and data is passed in separately. This makes testing easy, but I think the usability of the class suffers a little.   Hi everyone, I am trying to create this simple application in c#: when the user double clicks on specific location in the form, a little circle will be drawn. By one click, if the current location is marked by a circle - the circle will be removed. I am trying to do this by simply register the MouseDoubleClick and MouseClick events, and to draw the circle from a .bmp file the following way: private void MouseDoubleClick (object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Graphics g = this.CreateGraphics(); Bitmap myImage = (Bitmap)Bitmap.FromFile("Circle.bmp"); g.DrawImage(myImage, e.X, e.Y); } My problem is that I dont know how to make the circle unvisible when the user clicks its location: I know how to check if the selected location contains a circle (by managing a list of all the locations containig circles...), but I dont know how exactly to delete it. Another question: should I call the method this.CreateGraphics() everytime the user double-clicks a location, as I wrote in my code snippet, or should I call it once on initialization?

Now, as a hobby project, I'm undertaking to write an actual app, which will be a database app using System.Data.SQLite and C#. I have the db's table structure planned. I have System.Data.SQLite installed and connected to VS Pro. I entered my tables and columns in VS, but that's where I'm stuck. I really don't know how to finish the db set up so I can start creating queries and testing the db structure. Can someone give me guidance to online resources that will help me learn how to get the db properly set up so I can proceed with testing it? I'm hoping for online resources specific to beginners using C# and System.Data.SQLite, but I'll use the closest I can get. Thanks.

  Hi, does BlackBerry has any possibility to track focus or scroll change direction? I will describe a case. On UI we have a list and some horizontal tab bar (tab bar at top and below the list actually). If User is somewhere in the middle of a list and decides to click another tab, it appears a little difficult to put focus on the Tab control, so User scrolls to the first list item and after changes focus to tab (as a result very long operation). The point here How to catch event of horizontal scroll to change currently focused tab? And after if you scroll (by trackball) vertically you go back to list.   Suppose I have a file X.h which defines a class X, whose methods are implemented in X.cc. The file X.h includes a file Y.h because it needs Y to define class X. In X.cc, we can refer to Y because X.h has already included Y.h. Should I still include Y.h in X.cc ? I understand that I don't need to and I can depend on header guards to prevent multiple inclusions. But on the one hand, including Y.h makes X.cc a little more independent of X.h (can't be completely independent of course). What is the accepted practice? Another example: including <iostream> in both .h and .cc files. I see some people do this and some don't.
