• URL Encoding - Illegal Character Replacement

  Hi, I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls. I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for ' E.G. If I was to use the following: Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?" Dim url As String = String.Format("~/books/{0}/{1}/default.aspx", bookID, name) Response.Redirect(url) I've tried wrapping url like this: Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.UrlEncode(url) And Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.HTMLEncode(url) Thanks in advance. • Mocking Autofac's "Resolve" extension method with TypeMock

Having initially run this in a TestMethod, I kept getting an exception resembling "WhenCalled cannot be run without a complementing behavior". I tried defining behaviors for everyone and their mothers, but to no avail. Then I debug stepped through the test run, and saw that an actual exception was fired from Autofac: IRubber has not been registered. So it's obvious that the static Resolve function isn't being faked, and I can't get it to be faked, no matter how I go about hooking it up. Isolate.WhenCalled(() => ResolutionExtensions.Resolve<IRubber>(null)).WillReturn(new BubbleGum()); ... throws an exception from Autofac complaining that the IComponentContext cannot be null. Feeding it the presumably faked IContainer (or faking an IComponentContext instead) gets me back to the "IRubber not registered" error.

• Threading Practice with Polling.

  I have a C# application that has to constantly read from a program; sometimes there is a chance it will not find what it needs, which will throw an exception. This is a limitation of the program it has to read from. This frequently causes the program to lock up as it tries to poll. So I solved it by spawning the 'polling' off into a separate thread. However watching the debugger, the thread is created and destroyed each time. I am uncertain if this is typical or not; but my question is, is this good practice, or am I using the threading for the wrong purpose? • Android 1.5/1.6 issue with style and autogenerated R.java file

  I'm having strange issue with R.java file and styles defined in my resources. Here's some code: In res/values/strings.xml: <style parent="android:Theme.Dialog" name="PopupWindowStyle"> <item name="android:windowBackground">@drawable/bg1</item> <item name="android:textColor">@android:color/black</item> </style> In AndroidManifest.xml: <activity android:name=".RegisterScreen" android:icon="@drawable/ico" android:label="@string/applicationName" android:theme="@style/PopupWindowStyle" android:configChanges="locale|touchscreen|keyboard|keyboardHidden|navigation|orientation|fontScale"> </activity> In autogenerated gen/.../R.java: public static final class style { public static final int PopupWindowStyle=0x7f090000; } After some changes in the project, eclipse changed autogenerated value for PopupWindowStyle from 0x7f080000 to 0x7f090000. After that, on Android 1.5, RegisterScreen activity is displayed without PopupWindowStyle style - there is an error displayed in logcat: Skipping entry 0x7f090000 in package table 0 because it is not complex! On Android 1.6 however everything works fine - PopupWindowStyle works like it was before it's integer value has changed. I was testing this issue, by reverting the source code to older revisions. I can confirm, that this problem started occurring after src code commit, which changed two files completely unrelated to this part of code - and an autogenerated R.java file. Any idea what could cause that?

  I have a list of files URLS where I want to download them: http://somedomain.com/foo1.gz http://somedomain.com/foo2.gz http://somedomain.com/foo3.gz What I want to do is the following for each file: Download foo1,2.. in parallel with wget and nohup. Every time it complete download process them with myscript.sh What I have is this: #! /usr/bin/perl @files = glob("foo*.gz"); foreach $file (@files) { my $downurls = "http://somedomain.com/".$file; system("nohup wget $file &"); system("./myscript.sh $file >> output.txt"); } The problem is that I can't tell the above pipeline when does the file finish downloading. So now it myscript.sh doesn't get executed properly. What's the right way to achieve this?

  I using url to request remote urls that sometimes may very slow or just down. In this case, my php scripts still waiting for the response, it makes apache has to many requests stay in memory and then overload. I need a way to stop curl requesting or stop running php script when specified time passed. I'd tried declare(), it makes no sense for curl. Can someone know how to solve it? BTW: what is the effect of CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT and CURLOPT_TIMEOUT? They don't work like what I think.

  Hi, I'm working with django-piston to attempt to create an API that supports oAuth. I started out using the tutorial at: http://blog.carduner.net/2010/01/26/django-piston-and-oauth/ I added a consumer to piston's admin interface with key and secret both set to "abcd" for test purposes. The urls are successfully wired-up and the oAuth provider is called. However, running my get request token tests with tripit (python get_request_token.py "http://127.0.0.1:8000/api" abcd abcd), I receive the following error: Invalid signature. I can't, however, work out how to get the signature validated. Any ideas? -----Update----- If I remove the test consumer from piston's backend, the response returned is correctly set to "Invalid consumer", so this lookup appears to be working.

  I created a new Azure Website, using Umbraco as the CMS. I got a page up and going, and I already have a .co.nz domain with www.domains4less.com. I did some tests executing the code of my "show" method from a QMetaObject::invokeMethod stuff using Qt::QueuedConnection but nothing works properly. • django - variable declared in base project does not appear in app

  I have a variable called STATIC_URL, declared in settings.py in my base project: STATIC_URL = '/site_media/static/' This is used, for example, in my site_base.html, which links to CSS files as follows: <link rel="stylesheet" href="{{ STATIC_URL }}css/site_tabs.css" /> I have a bunch of templates related to different apps which extend site_base.html, and when I look at them in my browser the CSS is linked correctly as <link rel="stylesheet" href="/site_media/static/css/site_tabs.css" /> (These came with a default pinax distribution.) I created a new app called 'courses' which lives in the ...../apps/courses folder. I have a view for one of the pages in courses called courseinstance.html which extends site_base.html just like the other ones. However, when this one renders in my browser it comes out as <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/site_tabs.css" /> as if STATIC_URL were equal to "" for this app. Do I have to make some sort of declaration to get my app to take on the same variable values as the project? I don't have a settings.py file for the app. by the way, the app is listed in my list of INSTALLED_APPS and it gets served up fine, just without the link to the CSS file (so the page looks funny).   Right, this is from an older exam which i'm using to prepare my own exam in january. Fairly sure it's O(n²), unless someone thinks otherwise? Can you reduce the time complexity, and if so, how? Well, you can. I've received some help already and managed to get the following code: public static void Nieuw() { String bs = "Dit is een boodschap aan de wereld"; HashMap<Character, Integer> letters = new HashMap<Character, Integer>(); char max = bs.charAt(0); for (int i=0;i<bs.length();i++) { char let = bs.charAt(i); if(!letters.containsKey(let)) { letters.put(let,0); } int tel = letters.get(let)+1; letters.put(let,tel); if(letters.get(max)<tel) { max = let; } } System.out.println(letters.get(max) + " keer " + max); } However, I'm uncertain of the time complexity of this new code: Is it O(n) because you only use one for-loop, or does the fact we require the use of the HashMap's get methods make it O(n log n) ? And if someone knows an even better way of reducing the time complexity, please do tell! :)

• Entity Framework - refresh objects from database

  I'm having trouble with refreshing objects in my database. I have an two PC's and two applications. On the first PC, there's an application which communicates with my database and adds some data to Measurements table. On my other PC, there's an application which retrives the latest Measurement under a timer, so it should retrive measurements added by the application on my first PC too. The problem is it doesn't. On my application start, it caches all the data from database and never get new data added. I use Refresh() method which works well when I change any of the cached data, but it doesn't refresh newly added data. Here is my method which should update the data: public static Entities myEntities = new Entities(); public static Measurement GetLastMeasurement(int conditionId) { myEntities.Refresh(RefreshMode.StoreWins, myEntities.Measurements); return (from measurement in myEntities.Measurements where measurement.ConditionId == conditionId select measurement).OrderByDescending(cd => cd.Timestamp).First(); } P.S. Applications have different connection strings in app.config (different accounts for the same DB).

• Separate functionality depending on Role in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm looking for an elegant pattern to solve this problem: I have several user roles in my system, and for many of my controller actions, I need to deal with slightly different data. For example, take /Users/Edit/1 This allows a Moderator to edit a users email address, but Administrators to edit a user's email address and password. I'd like a design for separating the two different bits of action code for the GET and the POST. Solutions I've come up with so far are: Switch inside each method, however this doesn't really help when i want different model arguments on the POST :( Custom controller factory which chooses a UsersController_ForModerators and UsersController_ForAdmins instead of just UsersController from the controller name and current user role Custom action invoker which choose the Edit_ForModerators method in a similar way to above Have an IUsersController and register a different implementation of it in my IoC container as a named instance based on Role Build an implementation of the controller at runtime using Castle DynamicProxy and manipulate the methods to those from role-based implementations Im preferring the named IoC instance route atm as it means all my urls/routing will work seamlessly. Ideas? Suggestions?

  I have a scenario where I should redirect my Legacy Url to my current SEO Url. and I have 300+ different legacy urls so I am handling all those in my 404 Handler. I have my Legacy Url and the actual Action, controller and parameters it is supposed to use. But the issue is there is already a SEO friendly route for these Action and Controller. so I want to redirect this legacy URL to that friendly route. So I am planning to generate a link like what Html.ActionLink does and want to move permanently. Can anyone help me in generating this link???

• Prevent query string manipulation by adding a hash?

  To protect a web application from query string manipulation, I was considering adding a query string parameter to every url which stores a SHA1 hash of all the other query string parameters & values, then validating against the hash on every request. Does this method provide strong protection against user manipulation of query string values? Are there any other downsides/side-effects to doing this? I am not particularly concerned about the 'ugly' urls for this private web application. Url's will still be 'bookmarkable' as the hash will always be the same for the same query string arguments. This is an ASP.NET application.

• Why Does This Maintainability Index Increase?

  I would be appreciative if someone could explain to me the difference between the following two pieces of code in terms of Visual Studio's Code Metrics rules. Why does the Maintainability Index increase slightly if I don't encapsulate everything within using ( )? Sample 1 (MI score of 71) public static String Sha1(String plainText) { using (SHA1Managed sha1 = new SHA1Managed()) { Byte[] text = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText); Byte[] hashBytes = sha1.ComputeHash(text); return Convert.ToBase64String(hashBytes); } } Sample 2 (MI score of 73) public static String Sha1(String plainText) { Byte[] text, hashBytes; using (SHA1Managed sha1 = new SHA1Managed()) { text = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText); hashBytes = sha1.ComputeHash(text); } return Convert.ToBase64String(hashBytes); } I understand metrics are meaningless outside of a broader context and understanding, and programmers should exercise discretion. While I could boost the score up to 76 with return Convert.ToBase64String(sha1.ComputeHash(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText))), I shouldn't. I would clearly be just playing with numbers and it isn't truly any more readable or maintainable at that point. I am curious though as to what the logic might be behind the increase in this case. It's obviously not line-count.
