• How to switch and list windows (possibly of the same application) in Unity?

  Is there a way to switch easily between specific windows belonging to the same given application? For example, open Firefox, maximise the window; then, open its History window (History menu - Show all history), maximise it too. Is there an easy way to switch between these two maximised Firefox windows, without necessarily minimising the current window (or other windows in front of the required window)? Similarly, if I open another application alongside, how can I quickly go to the Firefox window of my choice? I have tried Alt+Tab, but when coming back from another application, which of the Firefox windows I end up with seems indeterministic. Under Gnome, I would find the window I'm looking for in the bottom bar. Under OSX, I would right-click on the application's icon and choose the relevant window from the list. Under Windows 7, I would click on the application icon and choose from the smaller windows. Is there something similar that's not activated or not visible by default in Unity? Hovering my mouse until I've found somewhere worth hovering over hasn't been very successful so far. I would prefer a click-based solution, but solutions involving key short-cuts instead are welcome.

• Do we ethically have the right to use the MAC Address for verification purposes?

  I am writing a program, or starting at the very beginning of it, and I am thinking of purchase verification systems as a final step. I will be catering to Macs, PCs, and possibly Linux if all is said and done. I will also be programming this for smartphones as well using C++ and Objective-C. (I am writing a blueprint before going head first into it) That being said, I am not asking for help on doing it yet, but what I’m looking for is a realistic measurement for what could be expected as a viable and ethical option for purchase verification systems. Apple through the Apple Store, and some other stores out there have their own "You bought it" check. I am looking to use a three prong verification system. Email/password 16 to 32 character serial number using alpha/numeric and symbols with Upper and lowercase variants. MAC Address. The first two are in my mind ok, but I have to ask on an ethical standpoint, is a MAC Address to lock the software to said hardware unethical, or is it smart? I understand if an Ethernet card changes if not part of the logic board, or if the logic board changes so does the MAC address, so if that changes it will have to be re-verified, but I have to ask with how everything is today... Is it ethical to actually use the MAC address as a validation key or no? Should I be forward with this kind of verification system or should I keep it hidden as a secret? Yes I know hackers and others will find ways of knowing what I am doing, but in reality this is why I am asking. I know no verification is foolproof, but making it so that its harder to break is something I've always been interested in, and learning how to program is bringing up these questions, because I don't want to assume one thing and find out it's not really accepted in the programming world as a "you shouldn't do that" maneuver... Thanks in advance... I know this is my first programming question, but I am just learning how to program, and I am just making sure I'm not breaking some ethical programmer credo I shouldn't...

• how to get wireless to work on my HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook on 12.04

  When my laptop ran XP, the wireless worked perfectly. Now the only way I get internet is having it wired in my living room - which is MASSIVELY inconvenient for me seeing as my room is outside. I have downloaded the driver from 'Additional Drivers', reset my computer (with difficulty, it also doesn't seem to like turning off, so I have to 'kill' it) and still nothing! I have looked all over the internet trying to find solutions but I just cant seem to get it to work. I have a USB wireless stick but I can't load the driver from the CD. I got this comment on a previous question: "Using either Snaptic Package Manager or Ubuntu's own Software Centre, remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" if it's already installed. Next, search for "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” and install both. Finally, running Software Sources and checking the Additional Drivers tab you should find Broadcom STA Wireless Driver that you can select, install and on reboot hopefully have wireless working ok..." Which I replied: "Right, so I tried to find/remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" but couldn't find anything. I managed to install both "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” using terminal, after finding out how it worked. And lastly, I couldn't figure out how to find 'Broadcom STA Wireless Driver' - still no more additional drivers. And my wireless is still not working. My laptop has a button that turns wifi on and off and since I put Ubuntu on it, it hasn't worked. And also, my computer still doesn't seem to restart properly - it just gets stuck on the ubuntu loading screen." - hope that helps, somewhat I am VERY new to Linux, not very technical and in need of help! -Running Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on a HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook Thank you to anyone who replies, its much appreciated

• Making document storage in Sharepoint a breeze (leave the Web UI behind)

  Hey everyone, I know many of us regularly use Sharepoint for document storage in order to make documents available to several people, have it version controlled, etc.  Doing this through the Web UI can be a real headache, especially when you have multiple documents you want to modify or upload, or when IE isn’t your default browser.  Luckily we can access the Sharepoint library like a regular network drive if we like. Open Sharepoint in Internet Explorer (other browsers don’t support the Open with Explorer functionality), navigate to wherever your documents are stored, choose the Library tab, and then click Open with Explorer. This will open the document storage in Explorer and you can interact with the documents just like they were on any other network drive J  This makes uploading large numbers of documents or directory structures super easy (a simple copy-paste), and modifying your files nice and easy. As an added bonus, you can drag and drop that location from the address bar in Explorer to the Favorites menu so that it’s always easily accessible and you can leave the Sharepoint Web UI behind completely for modifying your documents.  Just click on the new favorite to go straight to your documents.   You can even map this folder location as a network drive if you want to have it show up as another drive (e.g N: drive).   Background: 3 of 9 Barcode Alphabet A simple syntax for 3 of 9 bar codes What is the formula behind the alphabet and digits in a 3 of 9 bar code? For example, ASCII has a relatively clear arrangement. Numbers start at 33, capitals at 65, lowercase at 97. From these starting points you can infer the ASCII code for any number or letter. The start point for each range is also a multiple of 32 + 1. Bar codes seem random and lacking sequence. If we use the syntax from the second link, this is the first six characters in 3 of 9: A 100-01 B 010-01 C 110-00 D 001-01 E 101-00 F 011-00 I see no pattern here; what is it? I'm as much interested in the designer's intended pattern behind these as I am in someone devising an algorithm of their own that can give you the above code for a given character based on its sequence. I struggled with where to put this question; is it history, computer science, information science? I chose Programmers because a StackExchange search had the most barcode hits here, and because I wanted to specifically relate it to ASCII to explain what sort of formula/explanation I'm looking for.

• Slightly off topic - How to Fix Sky Go Error [t6013-c1501] (and [t6000-c1501])

  Sky doesn't seem to understand what their own errors mean, so I cobbled together an understanding from some other posts and managed to get it working.When you see the error [t6013-c1501] instead of your TV programme in Sky Go, it seems to mean:'You registered a device, but then changed the hardware, so now I'm confused!'In other words, the Digital rights management (DRM) used between Sky Go and Silverlight stored an old fingerprint of your PC, but rather than recognising this and allowing you to remove the device, it just disappears from the 'Manage Devices' page.DISCLAIMER: Perform the following steps at your own risk. It worked for me, but I didn't care if it broke stuff. If you care....don't do it!So, to fix this I did the following:1. Login to Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV' from the home page. It will attempt to show Sky News and fail with the error [t6013-c1501].2. Right click on the error and you should see the Menu option 'Silverlight'. Select this and a dialog should appear. Click the 'Application Storage' tab and delete any entry that relates to sky go. Clcik OK to close the dialog.3. Open explorer and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady4. Rename the file mspr.hds to mspr.hds.OLD5. Go back to the browser and click F5. You may need to logout/login (not sure).Note: Don't rename/delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady or you will get the error [t6000-c1501]. • Never Bet Against the Impossible

  My uncle used to say “If a man tells you that his car squirts milk in his eye when you lift the hood, don’t bet against that. You’ll end up with milk in your eye.” My friend Allen White tells me this is taken from a play (and was said about playing cards), but I think the sentiment holds, even in database work. I mentioned the other day that you should allow the other person to talk and actively listen before you propose a solution. Well, I saw a consultant “bet against the impossible”  the other day – and it bit her. She explained to the person telling her the problem that the situation simply couldn’t exist that way, and he proceeded to show her that it did. She got silent, typed a few things, muttered a little, and then said “well, must be something else.” She just couldn’t admit she was wrong. So don’t go there. If someone explains a problem to you with their database, listen with purpose, and then explore the troubleshooting steps you know to find the problem. But keep your absolutes to yourself. In fact, I have a friend that has recently sent me one of those. He connects to a system with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) version 2008 (if I recall correctly) and it shows a certain version number of the target system in the connection tab. Then he connects to it using SSMS 2008 R2 and gets a different number. Now, as far as I know, we didn’t change the connection string information, and that’s provided by the target system, so this is impossible. But I won’t tell him that. • Is there a way how to customize my keyboard layout in Xubuntu in a graphical way (by clicking)?

  Possible duplicate, but I really couldn't find a solution. I would like to adjust my US keyboard layout, e.g. to add possibility to type some special characters on combination of right Alt + another character, etc. Moreover, my arrow up is dead, so until I buy another keyboard, I'd like to use my right shift as my arrow up, ASAP. However, there seems to be no way how to edit my keyboard layout easily in Xubuntu :( I found no editor and I really don't want to spend years in some configuration files and terminal (not that I can't, but I really really don't want). KLE - the only editor I could find, but no installation guide, no package, no PPA, no idea how to make it working (and uninstallable if not needed one day) Editor in Ubuntu - apparently not present in Xubuntu I found several tutorials how to change the layout, but they all seems to be complicated and not easy to follow. I don't want to spend a weekend in terminal or so, I am looking for an app to launch, make some clicking, finish my work by hitting Save button and - done! Please, is there such solution? For humans?

• 11.10 system crashes for no apparent reason [closed]

  I'm relatively new to Linux, and while I know a fair amount about computers and programming, it certainly isn't my specialty. I have a dual boot with Windows 7, and it has been working very well for me until recently. Just randomly the computer will freeze. The last time I was smart enough to keep the System Monitor open when it happened, and it looks like at the time of freezing "bash" and a bunch of other processes that I don't recognize seem to have flooded the memory. So it looks like my memory is getting overloaded and this is what is crashing the system, but I honestly have no idea what could be doing it. Generally I have a bunch of programs running, but they don't take much RAM or CPU: Transmission, Libre Office Writer, Firefox, Empathy, and Banshee. Sometimes I also have Text Editor and Terminal open, but it crashes regardless. When it crashes, it seems that all of the programs are working fine but things like windows, the taskbar, and operations like Alt+Tab just stop working properly or at all. Sometimes the mouse and keyboard freeze and I have to power off manually. Other than that I don't know what the problem is. The only irregularity I've experienced is that I can't download "Debian package management system" even though other updates download fine.

• Use a SQL Database for a Desktop Game

  Developing a Game Engine I am planning a computer game and its engine. There will be a 3 dimensional world with first person view and it will be single player for now. The programming language is C++ and it uses OpenGL. Data Centered Design Decision My design decision is to use a data centered architecture where there is a global event manager and a global data manager. There are many components like physics, input, sound, renderer, ai, ... Each component can trigger and listen to events. Moreover, each component can read, edit, create and remove data. The question is about the data manager. Whether to Use a Relational Database Should I use a SQL Database, e.g. SQLite or MySQL, to store the game data? This contains virtually all game content like items, characters, inventories, ... Except of meshes and textures which are even more performance related, so I will keep them in memory. Is a SQL database fast enough to use it for realtime reading and writing game informations, like the position of a moving character? I also need to care about cross-platform compatibility. Aside from keeping everything in memory, what alternatives do I have? Advantages Would Be The advantages of using a relational database like MySQL would be the data orientated structure which allows fast computation. I would not need objects for representing entities. I could easily query data of objects near the player needed for rendering. And I don't have to take care about data of objects far away. Moreover there would be no need for savegames since the hole game state is saved in the database. Last but not least, expanding the game to an online game would be relative easy because there already is a place where the hole game state is stored.

• What does the ".align" x86 Assembler directive do exactly? [migrated]

  I will list exactly what I do not understand, and show you the parts I can not understand as well. First off, The .Align Directive .align integer, pad. The .align directive causes the next data generated to be aligned modulo integer bytes 1.~ ? : What is implied with "causes the next data generated to be aligned modulo integer bytes?" I can surmise that the next data generated is a memory-to-register transfer, no? Modulo would imply the remainder of a division. I do not understand "to be aligned modulo integer bytes"....... What would be a remainder of a simple data declaration, and how would the next data generated being aligned by a remainder be useful? If the next data is aligned modulo, that is saying the next generated data, whatever that means exactly, is the remainder of an integer? That makes absolutely no sense. What specifically would the .align, say, .align 8 directive issued in x86 for a data byte compiled from a C char, i.e., char CHARACTER = 0; be for? Or specifically coded directly with that directive, not preliminary Assembly code after compiling C? I have debugged in Assembly and noticed that any C/C++ data declarations, like chars, ints, floats, etc. will insert the directive .align 8 to each of them, and add other directives like .bss, .zero, .globl, .text, .Letext0, .Ltext0. What are all of these directives for, or at least my main asking? I have learned a lot of the main x86 Assembly instructions, but never was introduced or pointed at all of these strange directives. How do they affect the opcodes, and are all of them necessary?

• Working with lots of cubes. Improving performance?

  Edit: To sum the question up, I have a voxel based world (Minecraft style (Thanks Communist Duck)) which is suffering from poor performance. I am not positive on the source but would like any possible advice on how to get rid of it. I am working on a project where a world consists of a large quantity of cubes (I would give you a number, but it is user defined worlds). My test one is around (48 x 32 x 48) blocks. Basically these blocks don't do anything in themselves. They just sit there. They start being used when it comes to player interaction. I need to check what cubes the users mouse interacts with (mouse over, clicking, etc.), and for collision detecting as the player moves. Now I had a massive amount of lag at first, looping through every block. I have managed to decrease that lag, by looping through all the blocks, and finding which blocks are within a particular range of the character, and then only looping through those blocks for the collision detection, etc. However, I am still going at a depressing 2fps. Does anyone have any other ideas on how I could decrease this lag? Btw, I am using XNA (C#) and yes, it is 3d.

• Collision Detection Problems

  So I'm making a 2D tile based game but I can't quite get the collisions working properly. I've taken the code from the Platformer Sample and implemented it into my game as seen below. One problem I'm having is when I'm on the ground for some strange reason I can't move to the left. Now I'm pretty sure this problem is from the HandleCollisions() method because when I stop running it I can smoothly move around with no problems. Another problem I'm having is when I'm close to a tile the character jitters very strangely. I will try to post a video if necessary. • No sound Ubuntu 12.04 through HDMI

  Specs: Asus G73JH i7/720; ATI Mobility 5870 I have read through a lot of threads on getting HDMI sound to work and non of them have fixed my issue. Granted I am very new to Linux and know only the GUI aspect of what it does from finding similarities that Windows 7 has. I would like to become a Linux Power User and I figured this would be a good step to get started. I was able to successfully install my graphics driver and it shows in use. I connect the HDMI to my HD TV and I get no sound. I don't care about auto switch for sound, that would be great but not necessary. I just want my sound to work through the HDMI. What I have tried: Changed GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" pact set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-surround Failure: no such entity Sound Settings: Right-click Sound indicator ? Sound Settings ? Output Tab, and set Digital Output (S/PDIF) Built in Audio Speakers Built in Audio I only get 2 settings. If I right-click the area below those 2 in the "play sound through" box, I get no "show hidden devices". I am also doing all this with the HDMI connected to eliminate any possibility for error.

• Useful WatiN Extension Methods

  I've been doing a fair amount of UI testing using WatiN recently – here’s some extension methods I've found useful. This checks if a WatiN TextField is actually a hidden field. WatiN makes no distinction between text and hidden inputs, so this can come in handy if you render an input sometimes as hidden and sometimes as a visible text field. Note that this doesn't check if an input is visible (I've got another extension method for that in a moment), it checks if it’s hidden. public static bool IsHiddenField(this TextField textField) { if (textField == null || !textField.Exists) { return false; } var textFieldType = textField.GetAttributeValue("type"); return (textFieldType != null) && textFieldType.ToLowerInvariant() == "hidden"; } The next method quickly sets the value of a text field to a given string. By default WatiN types the text you give it into a text field one character at a time which can be necessary if you have behaviour you want to test which is triggered by individual key presses, but which most of time is just painfully slow; this method dumps the text in in one go. Note that if it's not a hidden field then it gives it focus first; this helps trigger validation once the value has been set and focus moves elsewhere. public static void SetText(this TextField textField, string value) { if ((textField == null) || !textField.Exists) { return; } if (!textField.IsHiddenField()) { textField.Focus(); } textField.Value = value; } Finally, here's a method which checks if an Element is currently visible. It seems like demand for CICS, Tuxedo has fallen from 2.5%/1% respectively to almost zero. To me, it seems bizarre: now we have more networked and internet enabled machines than ever before. And most of them are talking to some kind of database. So it would seem that use of products whose developers spent last 20-30 years working on distributing and coordinating and optimizing transactions should be on the rise. And it appears they're not. I can see a few causes but can't tell whether they are true: we forgot that concurrency and distribution are really hard, and redoing it all by ourselves, in Java, badly. Erlang killed them all. Projects nowadays have changed character, like most business software has already been built and we're all doing internet services, using stuff like Node.js, Erlang, Haskell. (I've used RabbitMQ which is written in Erlang, "but it was small specialized side project" kind of thing). BigData is the emphasis now and BigData doesn't need transactions very much (?). None of those explanations seem particularly convincing to me, which is why I'm looking for better one. Anyone?

  The other day, I wrote about how to download and install Java ME SDK plugin for NetBeans. If you are using NetBeans 7.2.1 or later, you don't have to go through the whole process at all. It's now a matter of a few clicks, because all the plugins are now all in NetBeans update server. Here is a new way to install and integrate Java ME SDK plugins for NetBeans. 1. On NetBeans, go to "Tools"- "Plugins". 2. Click on "Available Plugins" tab. Locate "Java ME SDK Tools". 3. Check the tools you want to install, and click "Install" button at the bottom left corner. 4. NetBeans will restart, and that's it! Remember that different Java ME SDK requires different version of Plugins. If you are using Java ME SDK 3.0.5 or earlier, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 2.0 (works with NetBeans 7.1.2 or earlier) If you are using Java ME SDK 3.2 or later, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 3.0 (works with NetBeans 7.2 or later)

• PHP Code (modules) included via MySQL database, good idea?

  The main script includes "modules" which add functionality to it. Each module is set up like this: <?php //data collection stuff //(...) approx 80 lines of code //end data collection $var1 = 'some data'; $var2 = 'more data'; $var3 = 'other data'; ?> Each module has the same exact variables, just the data collection is different. I was wondering if it's a reasonable idea to store the module data in MySQL like this: [database] |_modules |_name |_function (the raw PHP data from above) |_description |_author |_update-url |_version |_enabled ...and then include the PHP-data from the database and execute it? Something like, a tab-navigation system at the top of the page for each module name, then inside each of those tabs the page content would function by parsing the database-stored code of the module from the function section. The purpose would be to save code space (fewer lines), allow for easy updates, and include/exclude modules based on the enabled option. This is how many other web-apps work, some of my own too. But never had I thought about this so deeply. Are there any drawbacks or security risks to this?

  The saga of the Change Log A recent conversation reminded me of the need for change logs within a database, to record when various change scripts were run. Creating such the required table is simple. A typical table for this consists of: Id - identity Integer primary key ChangeFileName - NVARCHAR(128) to hold the name of the file run. DateAdded - DateTime non-null with default value of getutcdate() Purpose - NVARCHAR(128) Rerunnable - Bit non-null default 0. By good design of the table only two data values normally need to be supplied. Two stored procedures, one for inserting data and one to list in reverse sequence the log complete the database essentials. The complete implementation can be found in the CommonData solution at http://CommonData.CodePlex.Com By including a call the add Change Log stored procedure, each script can log its name and purpose for posterity. The scripts that were applied to say the UAT system and their sequence of application can be readily identified for running on the Live system. Formatting XML XML is often produced as one continous string with no embedded CR/LF. To get it into human readable form, open it in visual studio, swap to another tab and back and click the format document button. The XML will then be nicely formatted!

• Enemy collision detection with movie clips

  I have created multiple movieclips with animations within them. It is an obstacle avoidance game and I cannot seem to be able to get my enemies to contact my playableCharacter. The enemies I have created are each embedded on certain levels of my game. I have created an array, enemiesArray to have each of my enemies placed within it. Here is the code for that: //step 1: make sure array exists if(enemiesArray!=null && enemiesArray.length!=0) { //step 2: check all enemies against villain for(var i:int = 0;i < enemiesArray.length; i++) { //step 3: check for collision if(villain.hitTestObject(enemiesArray[i])) { //step 4: do stuff trace("HIT!"); removeChild(enemiesArray[i]); enemiesArray.splice(i,1); removeChild(villain); villain = null; } } } What I am unsure of is whether or not my enemiesArray is actually holding the movieclips I have suggested. If it was, this code would be tracing back a "HIT" for every time I ran into an enemy and would kill my character. It is not doing that however. I am thinking I have to push my movieclips into my array but I don't know how to do that or where for that matter. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

• My sound is not working, so I'm going to reinstall FYI [closed]

  I've had trouble getting the sound to work in Ubuntu 12.04 I'm running an Acer Aspire 5739g laptop. This is using a clean install. This wasn't a problem when ubuntu first installed. Rather, it was when I ran the updates that it stopped working. I already tried the suggestions on the ubuntu sites and other similar queries, and they haven't fixed it. Something in the updates is making my sound not work. Edit: It turns out that this might be a bug (the sound issue, first paragraph). After reinstall, it happened again (it's not caused by updates at all, or any software, because I fixed it now w/o reinstall). It seems like I replicated it as follows: I changed auto-hide in the behavior tab of Appearance settings by turning it on, and setting the sensitivity to below the recommended setting. Then instead of restarting, I just logged out and back in. The sound stopped working again. I set the behavior settings to default, restarted, and now it's back to normal. Not sure if it's due to only logging out (and not restarting) or b/c I set my sensitivity to a low setting. Not sure if this helps anyone, but thought I'd mention it.
