• Grails beginner problem "Failed to invoke Servlet 2.5"

  I'm trying to get Groovy on Grails set up on a Snow Leopard machine. I followed all the grails.com install directions and am trying to start the application from Grails: A Quick-Start Guide by Dave Klein. • Can xjc -version be trusted?

  I've spent the day debugging an issue with JAXB getting namespaces wrong or missing (possibly related to Marshaller.JAXB_FRAGMENT, but that's not the point here). I found the problem occurs with JAXB RI 2.1.10 in my endorsed dir. It is fixed if I use JAXB RI 2.2.4 or 2.2.6 Here is what is really confusing (and what made it take so long). The problem occurs on Linux with: $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1.1pre) (7~u3-2.1.1~pre1-1ubuntu2) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) $ xjc -version xjc 2.2.4 but it should work fine, if this java really uses JAXB RI 2.2.4 !! Similarly, I can't reproduce the issue on Windows with Java 1.6.0_27, which reports: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_27\bin>java -version java version "1.6.0_27" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_27-b07) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.2-b06, mixed mode) C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_27\bin>xjc -version xjc version "JAXB 2.1.10 in JDK 6" JavaTM Architecture for XML Binding(JAXB) Reference Implementation, (build JAXB 2.1.10 in JDK 6) and yet if I put 2.1.10 RI in my endorsed dir, the problem occurs. It should occur with 1.6.0_27, if that really uses JAXB RI 2.1.10. It seems to me that the problem I'm experiencing has been fixed in the reference implementation somewhere after 2.1.10 and before 2.2.4, but that neither of the 2 VM's above actually use the JAXB version they claim to. Or possibly they use the xjc they claim, but not what is in jaxb-api.jar and jaxb-impl.jar (I know there is a difference in the namespace prefix mapper property, but that won't be causing this problem). I've done these experiments on Win 7 and Ubuntu, in tomcat (no eclipse), and in eclipse (no tomcat), so I'm pretty confident I'm explaining my findings correctly. Can anyone provide any insight into what is happening? If I'm right, does anyone know what versions of JAXB the various Sun/Oracle JDKs really use?

  I am facing a design problem, here is some basic requirement: Aggregator 1. Separate service for blog,video,images and associations. 2. Each of the service should be completely separate, that means they run on separate tomcat. 3. And each aggregator must be able to query local database and other aggregators 4. Traversal of services must be asynchronous using a ring network. For example, we have a ring like ws1-ws2-ws3-ws4-ws1. Each node represents one type of one aggregator. The traveral goes in this way: the query from ws1 to ws2, and ws1 is waiting for the response from ws2 asynchronously; ws2 to ws3, also ws2 wait for ws3 asynchronously. If ws3 has the data, reply to ws2 then to ws1, then reply. However if ws3 goes away, the traversal should go back to ws2, then to ws1, then go to ws4, then go to ws3 again. then tells ws4 since ws3 fails. The required technology is axis2 and tomcat 6. Does anybody have any clue about it? If it is clear, I can clarify the question more clearly. Thanks very much.

• unable to place breakpoints in eclipse

  I am using eclipse europa (3.5) on windows vista home premium 64-bit using JDK 1.6.0_18 (32 BIT). Normally, I am able to put breakpoints just fine; However, for a particular class which is NOT part of the project (this class is inside a .JAR file (.JAR file is part of the project) ), although I have attached a source directory to this .JAR file, I am unable to place a breakpoint in this class. If I double-click on the breakpoint pane(left border), I notice that a class breakpoint is placed. I was wondering if there was NO debug info; However, found that this particular class was compiled using ant/javac task using debug="true" and debuglevel="lines,vars,source". I even ran jad on this class to confirm that it indeed contained the debug info. So, why is eclipse preventing me from placing a breakpoint ? EDIT : Just so everyone understands the context, this is a webapp running under tomcat 6.0. I am remote debugging the application from eclipse after having started tomcat outside. The application is working just fine. I am trying to understand the behavior of the above class which I'm unable to do since eclipse is not letting me set a BP. P.S : I saw a few threads here talking about BPs not being hit but in my case, I am unable to place the BP! P.P.S : I tried JDK 1.6.0_16 before trying out 1.6.0_18. Thanks for any pointers.

• Setting up ehcache replication - what multicast settings do I need?

  I am trying to set up ehcache replication as documented here: http://ehcache.sourceforge.net/EhcacheUserGuide.html#id.s22.2 This is on a Windows machine but will ultimately run on Solaris in production. The instructions say to set up a provider as follows: <cacheManagerPeerProviderFactory class="net.sf.ehcache.distribution.RMICacheManagerPeerProviderFactory" properties="peerDiscovery=automatic, multicastGroupAddress=230.0.0.1, multicastGroupPort=4446, timeToLive=32"/> And a listener like this: <cacheManagerPeerListenerFactory class="net.sf.ehcache.distribution.RMICacheManagerPeerListenerFactory" properties="hostName=localhost, port=40001, socketTimeoutMillis=2000"/> My questions are: Are the multicast IP address and port arbitrary (I know the address has to live within a specific range but do they have to be specific numbers)? Do they need to be set up in some way by our system administrator (I am on an office network)? I want to test it locally so am running two separate tomcat instances with the above config. What do I need to change in each one? I know both the listeners can't listen on the same port - but what about the provider? Also, are the listener ports arbitrary too? I've tried setting it up as above but in my testing the caches don't appear to be replicated - the value added in one tomcat's cache is not present in the other cache. Is there anything I can do to debug this situation (other than packet sniffing)? Thanks in advance for any help, been tearing my hair out over this one!

• Issues Deploying ROOT Context in Tomcat6

  I'm working on getting an application deployed to the ROOT ("/") context in my Tomcat 6 instance. Here's what has been done: Defined another virtual host (domain.com) Created the respective folder (/etc/tomcat6/Catalina/domain.com) Set it to auto deploy WAR's Set appBase to CATALINA_BASE/domainapps and created respective folder Copied manager.xml from localhost to domain.com. Now I'm trying to deploy into the ROOT context by uploading a ROOT.war to CATALINA_BASE/domainapps. This isn't working. I don't get any exceptions thrown, but the stock ROOT page ("It works !") stays up. I have successfully deployed it into another context (by uploading domainapp.war and viewing at /domainapp), but not ROOT. Re-reading the Virtual Host setup it makes reference to CATALINA_HOME and CATALINA_BASE. My CATALINA_HOME is at /usr/share/tomcat6/domainapp while CATALINA_BASE is /var/lib/tomcat6. Which should I be using for what? Currently haven't touched CATALINA_HOME but will try messing with a few things there. A better question might be what is the generally accepted flow taken to setup a new Tomcat instance and deploy an application to the root context.

  I have my business classes protected by EJB3 security annotations, now I would like to call these methods from a Spring controller, how do I do it? edit I will add some information about my setup, I'm using Tomcat for the webcontainer and OpenEJB for embedding EJB into tomcat. I did not settle on any version of spring so it's more or less open to suggestions. edit current setup works this way : I have a login form + controller that puts a User pojo inside SessionContext. Each time someone access a secured part of the site, the application checks for the User pojo, if it's there check roles and then show the page, if it's not show a appropriate message or redirect to login page. • What's the best way to learn .NET?

  I've been developing Java EE for quite a while now. I've used WebLogic, Tomcat, Spring, and Hibernate extensively, so I have a mental model of what features are available and how things are developed and deployed. The problem that I have with .NET is that I don't have a clear mapping of its features onto Java EE. Here's what I know so far: Java EE - .NET Java - C# JAR - DLL WAR - ? (deployment in general) EAR - ? (deployment in general) Tomcat - IIS web server JSP - ASP? JDBC - ODBC JMS - MSMQ JTA - Microsoft Transaction Manager So much of the functionality that WebLogic handles appears to be dispersed throughout the Windows OS. My confusion kicks in when I see the waves of books at Borders - VB.NET, ASP.NET, C#, etc. If I'm not a VB programmer, would it be possible to stick with C# and write enterprise apps that are the equivalent of what I'm used to with Java EE? If there were a Top Three list of books to learn from, what would they be? • Spring 3.0 vs J2EE 6.0

  Hi everybody, I'm confronted with a situation... I've been asked to give an advise regarding which approach to take, in terms of J2EE development between Spring 3.0 and J2EE 6.0. I was, and still am, a promoter of Spring 2.5 over classic J2EE 5 development, specially with JBoss, I even migrated old apps to Spring and influenced the re-definition of the development policy here to include Spring specific APIs, and helped the development of a strategic plan to foster more lightweight solutions like Spring + Tomcat, instead of the heavier ones of JBoss, right now, we're using JBoss merely as a Web container, having what i call the "container inside the container paradox", that is, having Spring apps, with most of its APIs, running inside JBoss, So we're in the process of migrating to tomcat. However, with the coming of J2EE 6.0 many features, that made Spring attractive at that time, easy deployment, less-coupling, even some sort of D.I, etc, seems to have been mimicked, in one way or the other. JSF 2.0, JPA 2.0, WebBeans, WebProfiles, etc. So, the question goes... From your point of view, how save, and logical, it is to continue to invest in a non-standard J2EE development framework like Spring given the new perspectives offered by J2EE 6.0? Can we talk about maybe 3 or 4 more years of Spring development, or do you recommend early adoption of J2EE 6.0 APIs and it's practices? I'll appreciate any insights with this...

• Java - Problem in deploying Web Application

  I have built a Java Web Application and packed it in a .war file and tested it on my local tomcat server and it is running fine. But when I deployed it on my client's server, it is showing an error. According to the remote server (my client's server), it is not finding a tld file packed in a jar file which I had placed in WEB-INF/lib directory. But when I checked the WEB-INF/lib directory for the jar file, i found that it was there. The contents of META-INF/MANIFEST.MF is as follows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: I think that there is no need to explicitly mention the classpath of WEB-INF/lib directory as it is in the classpath of any web application by default. Then, why the server can't find the jar file in the lib directory when I deployed it on a remote server and why it is working when I deployed the same application on my local server. I posted a question for this at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2441254/struts-1-struts-taglib-jar-is-not-being-found-by-my-web-application but found that the problem is unusual as nobody could answer it. So my questions are as follows: Q1. Is WEB-INF/lib still remains on the classpath if I leave the classpath entry blank as shown above in the MANIFEST.MF file or I should delete the classpath entry completely from the file or I should explicitly enter Class-Path: /WEB-INF/lib as the classpath entry? Q2. I have JSP pages, Servlets and some helper classes in the web application. Jsp pages are located at the root. Servlets and helper classes are located in WEB-INF/classes folder. So Is there any problem if my helper classes are located in the WEB-INF/classes folder? Note: Please note that this question is not same as my previous question. It is a follow-up question of my previous question. Both the servers (local and remote) are tomcat servers.

• GWT in its web-mode throws StatusCodeException but in its hosted-mode , it's working perfect

  Hi to all, I am new to this forum. Actually I have an issue here regarding my application which is hibernate+struts based application. Recently we have decided to integrate GWT into our application. We are using gwt 1.5.3 build. We have set up everything exactly as we find in documentation and various blogs. Yeah I am now in a very nervy state as gwt in its web- mode is treating me in a very embarassing manner. But it is compiling and working perfectly fine in its hosted-mode and everything works fine as we expected and designed. When I try to integrate GWT with our application i.e. running in tomcat (http://localhost:8080/myapps/example.do? reqCode=takeMeToGWT&userId=12&templateId=10). The gwt page is loaded partially and in the midst it throws an exception i.e. StatusCodeException. This doesn't happen when I run the gwt application in hosted-mode ( http://localhost:8888/com.myapp.gwt.MyApp/Home.html ) . I am using Intellij Idea 8, struts 1.3 ,hibernate 3 and tomcat 5.5 .   In my tomcat there are multiple webapps deployed and they communicate with each other. Currently they all have their own log file. But when there is some issue comes from call I have to 1st check with the app to whom I made a call and check log file of respective apps involved in the call. So I want that, as all apps is deployed in same tomcat and sharing a common log4j, if a call made to any app then all logs should be in a single log file and no matters how my webapps are involved all error comes from any webapp during the call should be in a single log file. I have no idea how can I achieve this. So any help is appreciable. Edited: I think my question is not cleared so updated with use case: I have three webapps A, B, C having logs files as A.log, B.log and C.log. I made two calls. 1st one to A (that internally calls C) and 2nd to B (that internally calls C). Now logging of first call must be in A.log (with the logs of every step performed inside the webapp c) and second call must be in B.log (with the logs of every step performed inside the webapp c).

  I have a problem, I need to sync version of the project. Changes are performed on main project that resides on central Coldfusion server. There are about 30 remote Coldfusion servers, that has to sync with latest version on central server. New synch application will to be done in Java! I have a direct link to each remote location. Mostly Windows OS and Windows tools are used. My idea: The synchronization is performed at the level of synchronization of folders. I would like to avoid the use of SVN and similar tools. My idea is to carry out comparison of folders on the local server (comparison is performed between the old and new versions),with NO communication with remote servers, make the difference between the versions and the same is sent to the remote machines. We will install Tomcat on every remote server. "Sync application" deployed on Tomcat will take care about differences. Remote server will return me an answer, about the success of the sync. • Problem when compressing SWF in Linux with java.util.zip

  Hi! I've created a servlet that changes the binaries of a SWF file and output it to the user. The SWF is compressed by ZLIB by default. Then I inflate, change the binaries, deflate and output the result. Everything was running right on a Windows Server 2008 (also in 2003). Currently, we need change the server to Linux, and then, this servlet is somehow outputing a corrupted SWF File... what could be the problem? What intrigues me more is that there is no difference between the Windows and Linux servlet versions. Is there any undocumented linux specific behaviour for the java.util.zip package?   Good day. I'm developing a Java web app with Servlets\JSP using Tomcat 7.0. During request from client I put and object into the session and use forward. After the forward processing the same request the object can be retreived if the secure parameter is false otherwise it is not stored in session. <session-config> <session-timeout>15</session-timeout> <cookie-config> <http-only>true</http-only> <secure>true</secure> </cookie-config> <tracking-mode>COOKIE</tracking-mode> </session-config> I've figured out that "...cookies can be created with the 'secure' flag, which ensures that the browser will never transmit the specified cookie over non-SSL...". I've configured Tomcat to use SSL, but that haven't helped. Changing the tracking mode to SSL haven't helped as well. How do session-config and HttpSession object correlate in this case? What could be the problem?

• Cocoon lite / XML and XSLT publishing framework

  What publishing frameworks (publishing only, NOT full-blown CMS) based on XML, XSLT sitemaps and pipelines exist, are stable, active, and simpler / lighter than Cocoon? I have glanced at: mod_xslt (http://www.mod-xslt2.com/) which seemed to be exactly that, but looks all but dead, and required a complex setup, and apparently supported only libxslt as an XSLT processor (I'd like to be able to use Saxon and XSLT 2.0 of course). Apache Forrest (http://forrest.apache.org/), but I don't understand if it is really simpler than Cocoon or is rather an additionnal thing on top of Cocoon? What I'm looking for is something that does just this: recieves an HTTP GET "runs it" through a sitemap finds a pipeline: source.xml - xslt1.xsl - xslt2.xsl - xsltn.xsl - serialize runs the pipeline serves the serialized result to the client and: uses Saxon (or is "processor independant") can be installed "lightly", that is: should not require much more configuration than the sitemap Maybe I'm describing an early version of Cocoon, or a future version of an XProc implementation... Anyway, does such a tool exist?
