• Silly Developers, VirtualBox Is For Sysadmins!

  That's one of my favorite bumper stickers. (Well, along with the sticker placed upside down on Jeep windows that says "If you can read this, roll me over.") I don't object to the "silly boys" sticker because, in my humble opinion, girls look much cuter in Jeeps than guys do. But as Ginny Henningsen points out, a similar sentiment can be applied to Oracle VM VirtualBox.   Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! (BTW, I've posted here because this was more of a "what's the best option" question than a "How do I program that?" question. If you think it would be more appropriate on SO, please move it there.)

• Should I use XNA (C#) or Java to create a basic game engine?

  My project is to design and build a game engine (in just about 3 months). I've been looking at two options for this game engine, either make it with XNA (and C#) or Java. My experience with XNA/C# is zero to none, however I have been a Java programmer for around 4 years. I've had a little play around with both but I am still not sure what would be best to use (i.e. what would turn out better with my experience). XNA is obviously for making games and I would presume making a game engine would be slightly easier in this - however that said, there are numerous libraries available in Java that could be used for a game engine (such as lwjgl). What would be my best option and ideally produce the best results out of both XNA or Java? For your information, the game engine at the moment is a 2D one and is not too advanced (although I plan to extend it in the future). Thanks in advance for all answers!

  Our web system, use the third-party cdn service. Assume that the user set the local dns with the googledns or opendns to visit our web sites, so cdn service will select the closest cdn proxy node. all right, but in fact the user's actual access position might outside there, cdn service may chose the one furthest away from the user node, so static resource access slower.. At present, my idea is if user local set dns server with googledns, and then first one we get the actual ip address of the user, tracerote to test a best routing lines, set up a cookie in user browser, and then set 302 header for response to jump to the which best cdn node. Whether the user's browser side traceroute tool can provide the best route decision-making ? Because we find that, once the user to set local dns server with the foreign network segment, for example : set dns with 8.8.8.8, so cdn routing will choose the foreign service node.

  What is the best and most safest way to handle PHP sessions. Is the best way to store sessions in: Database (more reliable, but high bottleneck, slow speed, not good for high database usage websites)? Memcache (super fast, but distributed more security problems, chances of loosing data when the server restarted and chances of loosing data when the cache is full)? Files (default option, I guess slow since it reads and writes from file I/O, less security, etc). Which method is the best? What are the problems and good things of each of those approaches?

  In what language are the most libraries/frameworks (like lwjgl for Java, XNA for C#)? What language is the easiest to start making a game (very easy to get a 3D-environment rendered)? What language has the friendliest learning curve? Say I want to make a game and I don't know any programming languages, I want to develop for any platform(so don't give the answer "the one you know best/the platform you are working on"), then what is the best language to start with. I get this question a lot "I have this and that ideas for a game and want to make it, what language should I use"(mostly asked by beginning programmers), but I don't know how to answer that. The answer "use the one you are most familiar with", because sometimes they don't even know a language yet... I am not asking for someone's personal opinion, but an objective list of what languages are the easiest/most supported/have the most/best libraries/frameworks to get started with gamedevelopment.
