  The application packaging (software deliverables) is a vague concept to me. I worked in web application before so all I know how to prepare the deliverables ie WAR and then put them into the servlet container and rest of this being taken care of. But when considering other java or c++-based application (.exe or .class) how to prepare the package? What should be considered for preparation of the package and deployment of the application? Like I understand there should be some entries made into the windows registry or some libraries to be put in /usr/bin directory and so on. And during the development phase the execution and testing is done in more informal manner like writing some shell script or so on. But the deployment scenario is a more formal thing. As I said I have only the idea of deploying web applications I am not much knowledgeable in the other areas. Are there any kind of conventions like there are conventions for documentations like javadoc or doxygen/man pages? Application packaging is not that sort of a thing that there are much discussion on books or online materials. This is very disappointing.

• Client unable to authenticate when connecting to WCF service

  I have a WCF service hosted in a Windows service. The application is an intranet app, and I have programmatically set the bindings on both the service and the client as: NetTcpBinding aBinding = new NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.Transport); aBinding.Security.Transport.ClientCredentialType = TcpClientCredentialType.Windows; aBinding.Security.Transport.ProtectionLevel = System.Net.Security.ProtectionLevel.EncryptAndSign; Both the service and client have endpoints configured with SPNs: EndpointAddress = new EndpointAddress(uri, EndpointIdentity.CreateSpnIdentity("Service1")); As far as I know, I have setup the bindings correctly-- and I am usually able to connect to the service just fine. I did however run into a case where on a server running Windows Server 2003 R2, x64, SP2 I get the following exception immediately when the client tries to connect: INNEREXCEPTION -- Exception Message: InvalidCredentialException: Either the target name is incorrect or the server has rejected the client credentials. Stack Trace: at System.Net.Security.NegoState.ProcessAuthentication(LazyAsyncResult lazyResult) at System.Net.Security.NegotiateStream.AuthenticateAsClient(NetworkCredential credential, String targetName, ProtectionLevel requiredProtectionLevel, TokenImpersonationLevel allowedImpersonationLevel) at System.ServiceModel.Channels.WindowsStreamSecurityUpgradeProvider.WindowsStreamSecurityUpgradeInitiator.OnInitiateUpgrade(Stream stream, SecurityMessageProperty& remoteSecurity) I get the exception when I try to connect to the service from another machine in the domain, but if I connect to the service on the same machine running the service it works fine. The hosting service itself is running as a domain user account-- but I have tried running the service as a Local System and Network Service to no avail. I have checked the Local Security Policies for the server and didn't see anything amiss (i.e. 'Access this computer from the network' includes 'Everyone'). Anyone have an idea of what could resolve this? I am wondering if I need to do something in Active Directory with respect to the service's SPN? I have read some about using setspn.exe to register or refresh SPNs, but I haven't needed to do this before. Why would this be working with other configurations but not the one above?

• Disassembling with python - no easy solution?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a python script that will disassemble a binary (a Windows exe to be precise) and analyze its code. I need the ability to take a certain buffer, and extract some sort of struct containing information about the instructions in it. I've worked with libdisasm in C before, and I found it's interface quite intuitive and comfortable. The problem is, its Python interface is available only through SWIG, and I can't get it to compile properly under Windows. At the availability aspect, diStorm provides a nice out-of-the-box interface, but it provides only the Mnemonic of each instruction, and not a binary struct with enumerations defining instruction type and what not. This is quite uncomfortable for my purpose, and will require a lot of what I see as spent time wrapping the interface to make it fit my needs. I've also looked at BeaEngine, which does in fact provide the output I need, a struct with binary info concerning each instruction, but its interface is really odd and counter-intuitive, and it crashes pretty much instantly when provided with wrong arguments. The CTypes sort of ultimate-death-to-your-python crashes. So, I'd be happy to hear about other solutions, which are a little less time consuming than messing around with djgcc or mingw to make SWIGed libdisasm, or writing an OOP wrapper for diStorm. If anyone has some guidance as to how to compile SWIGed libdisasm, or better yet, a compiled binary (pyd or dll+py), I'd love to hear/have it. :) Thanks ahead.

• Run a .java file using ProcessBuilder

  I'm a novice programmer working in Eclipse, and I need to get multiple processes running (this is going to be a simulation of a multi-computer system). My initial hackup used multiple threads to multiple classes, but now I'm trying to replace the threads with processes. From my reading, I've gleaned that ProcessBuilder is the way to go. I have tried many many versions of the input you see below, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to properly use it. I am trying to run the .java files I previously created as classes (which I have modified). I eventually just made a dummy test.java to make sure my process is working properly - its only function is to print that it ran. My code for the two files are below. Am I using ProcessBuilder correctly? Is this the correct way to read the output of my subprocess? Any help would be much appreciated. • Access Denied while using System.Diagnostics.Process

  I am trying to use the unmanaged ImageMagick library in my ASP.NET application from the command line using System.Diagnostics.Process. Basically, users will upload an .eps file to the site, and then I will run the command line command to convert it into .jpg. I get the error "System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Access is denied". The main between the two servers is that the production is 64-bit and runs Plesk to manage multiple domains. I've tried adding rights asp.net user to the ImageMagick directory. The PS Admin says that in the case of Plesk, it's the same account that I use to access the site in VS using FPE. Does anyone know what I might do in order to allow this process to run on my production server? Thanks, Mike

  I'm totally new to flex. I'm getting a build error when using flex. • Node.js running under IIS Express Keeps Crashing

  I recently resinstalled Windows 7 on my machine and went back to downloading and installing the tools to help me continue developing node.js windows azure web applications. I'm guessing its something to do with IIS Express on my machine. • How to make designer generated .Net application settings portable

  Hello, I've been looking at modifying the source of the Doppler podcast aggregator with the goal of being able to run the program directly from my mp3 player. Doppler stores application settings using a Visual Studio designer generated Settings class, which by default serializes user settings to the user's home directory. I'd like to change this so that all settings would be stored in the same directory as the exe. It seems that this would be possible by creating a custom provider class which inherits the SettingsProvider class. Has anyone created such a provider and would like to share code? Update: I was able to get a custom settings provider nearly working by using this MSDN sample, i.e. with simple inheritance. I was initially confused as Windows Forms designer stopped working until I did this trick suggested at Codeproject: internal sealed partial class Settings { private MySettingsProvider settingsprovider = new MySettingsProvider(); public Settings() { foreach (SettingsProperty property in this.Properties) { property.Provider = settingsprovider; } ... The program still starts with window size 0;0 though. Anyone with any insight to this? Why the need to assing the provider in runtime---instead of using attributes as suggested by MSDN? Why the changes in how the default settings are passed to the application with the default settings provider vs. the custom one?

• How do I lock the workstation from a windows service?

  Hello, I need to lock the workstation from a windows service written in VB.Net. I am writing the app on Windows 7 but it needs to work under Vista and XP as well. User32 API LockWorkStation does not work as it requires an interactive desktop and I get return value of 0. I tried calling %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation from both a Process and from Shell, but still nothing happens. Setting the service to interact with the desktop is a no-go as I am running the service under the admin account so it can do some other stuff that requires admin rights - like disabling the network, and you can only select the interact with desktop option if running under Local System Account. That would be secondary question - how to run another app with admin rights from a service running under Local System Account without bugging the user. I am writing an app to control my kids computer/internet access (which I plan to open source when done) so I need everything to happen as stealthily as possible. I have a UI that handles settings and status notifications in the taskbar, but that is easy to kill and thus defeat the locking. I could make another hidden Windows Forms app to handle the locking, but that just seems a rather inelegant solution. Better ideas anyone? Thanks! Brad

• Moving to .net 4 results in System.Transactions Critical: 0

  Hi I have fully working project in .net 3.5SP1, with EF 1 ORM. I tried to upgrade to .net 4. No issue while upgrading... Then i ran the project and got a NullExecptionError, with no stack trace... and no way to debug. • Adding editFTPnetPRO to SSIS package causes error message

  I'm trying to add some secure FTP code to an SSIS package. I've used the EnterpriseDT product successfully on other .NET projects, so I wanted to incorporate it into an SSIS 2008 package I'm working on. If I create a Script Task (VB), edit the script, choose Project | Add Reference, and select the editFTPnetPRO.dll file, it comes back with this error: No template information found. See the application log in Event Viewer for more details. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer. The application log doesn't contain any pertinent details. I have no idea what this is trying to tell me. I've gone down a couple dead ends searching for this error message and following the prescribed fixes, but nothing has fixed it yet. Any idea what might be going wrong? P.S. - I tried the devenv.exe /installvstemplates fix, which didn't change anything. Update: Here is the error captured in the SSIS package when you try to run it: Error: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'edtFTPnetPRO, Version=6.3.1.20, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0dce1ad63760d80b' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Where is it looking for this file? I tried copying it to the project direcory, the bin folder, and the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.nnnn folder, but it still can't find it, and it won't tell me where it's looking.

And I am using Forms authentication for my web site (I use command aspnet_regsql.exe to create a new database in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to host database for Forms Authentication. I am not using SQL Server Express.). I am learning Forms authentication from here, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff648345.aspx#paght000022_usingthesqlmembershipprovider my question is for the name of membership defaultProvider, the value must be "SqlProvider"? • Possible to Inspect Innards of Core C# Functionality

  I was struck today, with the inclination to compare the innards of Buffer.BlockCopy and Array.CopyTo. I am curious to see if Array.CopyTo called Buffer.BlockCopy behind the scenes. There is no practical purpose behind this, I just want to further my understanding of the C# language and how it is implemented. Don't jump the gun and accuse me of micro-optimization, but you can accuse me of being curious! Searching around only revealed a stackoverflow question, which Marc Gravell said [Buffer.BlockCopy] is basically a wrapper over a raw mem-copy While insightful, it doesn't answer my question if Array.CopyTo calls Buffer.BlockCopy. I'm specifically interested in if I'm able to see how these two functions are implemented, and if I had future questions about the internals of C#, if it is possible for me to investigate it. Or am I out of luck?

• How to install OpenCV 2.0 on win32

  I need to install OpenCV on Win32. I do not have it installed currently. I downloaded OpenCV-2.0.0a-win32.exe and ran it. What the heck do I do now? There are no .lib's and whatnot. I found some instructions for building the release using cmake at http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/InstallGuide . I downloaded the latest and greatest cmake, and tried to follow the instructions, but I was guessing. No joy. I specified VC++9 when I did the "configure," but cmake built a VC++ 6 dsw file. No vcproj. I converted the dsw into a vc++9 vcproj anyway, just to see if it would work. Nope. It compiled lots of files, but many failed because it could not find omp.h. Sure enough, it's not there, anywhere. The build log said, 'A tool returned an error code from "Performing Custom Build Step".' I am lost. Ideally, I would like to find a full installation with all the files pre-built for Win32 vc++ 2008. Failing that, I need instructions that even I can follow. Short sentences and small words, but lots of them. Please help! UPDATE: I tried to build just CXCORE. It complained, "cannot open file 'VCOMPD.lib'" There's that OMP again.

• Unregistering COM dll with a C# Setup Project

  Hi All. I've been stuck on this one for a while. I'll try explain in the simplest terms and at the best of my knowledge. I will honour any help. I've got a C# project which uses a VB6 compiled ActiveX DLL that I'm constantly updating. I compile the setup project, send it to the client and they run the setup. When building the updated setup project, I would increase the 'Version' of the setup project so it wouldn't bother with 'Another version is already installed'. What started happening after a few updates I began to notice the DLL would not be updated to the new version in the installer. The client computer had the original DLL both installed and registered. First symptom: method not found exceptions from the client C# code. This is not a shared DLL and only this application needs it. I've noticed that when uninstalling the application (through the usual procedure) the DLL is also not removed from the application folder although I would set this file's property 'Permanent' to false. The registration entries in the registry are mantained also. I do update in VS6.0 the version of the DLL (usually increase the build number) before building it. Then in VS2008, I remove it from the References, and add it again from the 'Browse tab', without re-registering it on my dev machine and adding it from the COM tab. I've thought of these options.   I've got a console app and i need to globalize some of the hardcoded message strings. I've got two assemblies: MyProgram.Console (Console app) MyProgram.Core (class lib) In MyProgram.Core I've made a Language.en-GB.resx and set it as an Embedded Resource. In the resource I've created a key/value pair: "SomeKey" : "SomeValue" When I build my application I get: bin/MyProgram.Console.exe bin/MyProgram.Core.dll bin/en-BG/MyProgram.Core.resources.dll How do I address these resource key/values? Currently I'm trying this from a class within MyProgram.Core: var mgr = new ResourceManager(GetType().Assembly.GetName().Name, Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); mgr.GetString("SomeKey", new Culture("en-GB")); But I keep getting: System.Resources.MissingManifestResourceException: Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "MyProgram.Core.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "MyProgram.Core" at compile time, or that all the satellite assemblies required are loadable and fully signed. What am I doing wrong? I've tried every combination I can think of for the baseName argument to the ResourceManagers ctor. Thanks

• Git Diff with Beyond Compare

  I have succeeded in getting git to start Beyond Compare 3 as a diff tool however, when I do a diff, the file I am comparing against is not being loaded. Only the latest version of the file is loaded and nothing else, so there is nothing in the right pane of Beyond Compare. I am running git 1.6.3.1 with Cygwin with Beyond Compare 3. I have set up beyond compare as they suggest in the support part of their website with a script like such: #!/bin/sh # diff is called by git with 7 parameters: # path old-file old-hex old-mode new-file new-hex new-mode "path_to_bc3_executable" "$2" "$5" | cat Has anyone else encountered this problem and know a solution to this? Edit: I have followed the suggestions by VonC but I am still having exactly the same problem as before. I am kinda new to Git so perhaps I am not using the diff correctly. For example, I am trying to see the diff on a file with a command like such: git diff main.css Beyond Compare will then open and only display my current main.css in the left pane, there is nothing in the right pane. I would like the see my current main.css in the left pane compared to the HEAD, basically what I have last committed.   Recently I am having problems with installing rcov gem on my windows (vista Home Basic environment), so after googling I found one solution and that is gem install rcov -v 0.8.1.1.0 #version that installs without errors gem update rcov #update to the latest version, in my case rcov-0.8.1.2.0-x86-mswin32 But this solution didn't worked on my colleague's system (windows xp) and after that we came to know about RubyInstaller devkit for winddows But that dev kit is not working on my vista, when I tried gem install rcov in my command prompt, it game me this error, C:\Users\Vamsi>gem install rcov Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing rcov: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/ge ms/rcov-0.9.8 for inspection. Results logged to D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rcov-0.9.8/ext /rcovrt/gem_make.out So after that my colleague tried to install nmake as well but it was throwing some other error. Can some one suggest a better solution for solving this problems for all windows environments? I am aware of cygwin for windows but I am not sure that is an 100% solution either.

  We share our classes between silverlight 3.0 client and server as is it described here. Everything works fine under Visual Studio 2008 only. Using msbuild with following command line parameters: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\msbuild.exe FoobarApplication.sln /t:Rebuild /p:Configuration=Release /p:Platform="Any CPU" we get following error: Class1.cs(28,54): error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'WcfService' does not exist in the namespace 'Company.FoobarApplication' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Service References\geoServiceReference1\Reference.cs(24,81): error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'WcfService' does not exist in the namespace 'Company.FoobarApplication' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Done Building Project "C:\work\bov-tmp\FoobarApplication\SilverlightClassLibrary3\SilverlightClassLibrary3.csproj" (Rebuild target(s)) -- FAILED. Done Building Project "C:\work\bov-tmp\FoobarApplication\FoobarApplication.sln" (Rebuild target(s)) -- FAILED. I found exactly the same question here. There are 4 workarounds there, I tried first 3 of them and those did not worked out. The 4-th workaround is not the acceptable solution. Any thoughts how to build the solution?

  I've got 2 Ruby versions: 1.8.7 and 1.9.2 and PostgreSQL 8.3. I cant install pg gem on any of them. • SQL 2005 Express Edition - Install new instance

  Looking for a way to programatically, or otherwise, add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express Edition to a system that already has an instance installed. Traditionally, you run Micrsoft's installer like I am in the command line below and it does the trick. Executing the command in my installer is not the issue, it's more a matter of dragging around the 40 MBs of MS-SQL installer that I don't need if they have SQL Express already installed. This is what my installer currently executes: SQLEXPR32.EXE /qb ADDLOCAL=ALL INSTANCENAME=<instancename> SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=<password> SQLAUTOSTART=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 I don't need assistance with launching this command, rather the appropriate way to add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express without actually running the full installer again. I'd go into great detail about why I want to do this but I'd simply bore everyone. Suffice to say, having this ability to create a new instance without the time it takes to reinstall SQL Express etc. would greatly assist me for the deployment of my application and it's installer. If makes any difference to anyone, I'm using a combination of NSIS and Advanced Installer for this installation project.
