  A couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. For example, where should we host the files, what type of security issues do I need to be aware of, what's the best software to use for developing websites (I use visual studio at work), where can I find some design techniques, etc. Any help is appreciated.

• DesktopCouch does not sync

  I have here two computers, both installed with Ubuntu 10.10. The Laptop uses the Netbook Edition. Both are connected, file sync and Tomboy Notes are working. My Desktop syncs databases with Ubuntu One, my Laptop does not. If I delete for example the contacts Database on my Desktop, the database is back a view seconds later. If I delete the same database on my laptop, nothing happens. (I'm using Futon) If I kill beam, delete the config and try to restart with the dbus-send I got an error Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. How can I fix that?

• Tips for developing with a remote team

  My company has corporate offices around the country and I have been hired under contract to work in one office while the rest of my team works in another. We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? What are the most important priorities? Standard versioning control, e-mail, phone, conference call and IM are all available resources, however Google apps, Skype and the like are not for security reasons.

• Why Wikipedia doesn't appear as a referral in Google Analytics' Traffic sources?

  One of my clients has a website and got not spammy backlinks in a Wikipedia article. When I test it for SEO purposes with Google Analytics (from different IPs), apparently there is no referral information. On the Real-Time view my test visit is visible but with There is no data for this view in the referrals subview. And this visits appear as (direct) / (none) on the Traffic sources view. Wikipedia is not hiding in any way its links origin, since it is shown in the server visits log. Is Google ignoring Wikipedia as a referral? Am I missing anything else? Update: Now it works, several days after the link was active. Maybe something is detecting for how long the link was there so that it doesn't work just from the beggining, as a security measure? Many visits are actually not recorded.

  I'm currently using Yahoo! Media Player for a site that needs to play MP3 files that are stored on our server. In total, there's quite a bit more than the free limits at Soundcloud, but each file is only a few minutes long. YMP is pretty good, but causes security warnings on HTTPS pages, because it can only be served via HTTP. Is there an equivalent free player I can embed for the HTTPS pages? EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm initially looking for something that will scan the page and turn media links playable.

  I can't believe I'm raising this question after years, but after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.10, I'm unable to connect Pidgin to Google Talk. I use a Google Apps domain name, and the settings that I'm using are : Protocol : XMPP Username : **** Domain : ********.com Resource : Home In the advanced tab, Connection security : Require encryption. UNCHECK Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted steams Connect port : 5222 Connect sever : talk.google.com File transfer proxies : proxy.eu.jabber.org Bosh URL : (blank) In the proxy tab, No proxy. I had used these same settings on 12.04 and it had worked like a charm. Any help will be appreciated.

  I'm using Ubuntu and I'm trying to connect to another machine in a different network using remote desktop. In Windows7 I have made the following in order to activate remote desktop: I've gone to computer - properties - remote settings I've selected the option: "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop I've opened "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" In inbound rules I've enabled the rules for remote desktop (public and domain) I have also installed Remmina in the Ubuntu machine. For configuring it I did the following steps: Selected the RDP protocol In the server input I have written the Windows machine public IP. In username / password I have typed my login credentials (the same as my Windows admin account) But when I try to connect I get this error message: "Unable to connect to RDP server 89.130.251.160" If I ping my Windows7 machine, I have a correct response. Any suggestions?

  Like other users, when authenticating in U1 I get this error: Method "CreateItem" with signature "a{sv}(oayay)b" on interface "org.freedesktop.Secret.Collection" doesn't exist. And in /var/log/auth.log: gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: egg_symkey_generate_simple: assertion `iterations >= 1' failed gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: couldn't prepare to write out keyring: /home/yann/.gnome2/keyrings/login_1.keyring So I tried to move "login.keyring". I typed no password for the security when logging into U1, accepted non secured way to save passwords. And a message told me the operation successfully completed (in French). But, sync did not work. And u1sdtool --status returned this: State: AUTH_FAILED connection: With User With Network description: auth failed is_connected: False is_error: True is_online: False queues: WORKING I'm sorry U1 doesn't work anymore; it was really useful to me.   One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

• MySQL vs. SQL Server GoDaddy, What is the difference between hosted DB and App_Data Db

  I'm using GoDdady for site hosting, and I'm currently using MySQL, because there are less limits on size,etc. My question is what is the difference between using a hosted GoDaddy Db such as MySQL vs. creating a SQL Server database in the the App_Data folder? My guess is security? Would it be a bad idea to use a SQL ServerDB that's located in the App_Data folder? Additional Well I am able to create a .mdf (SQL Server DB file) in the App_Data folder, but I'm really unsure if should use that or not, If I did use it it would simplify using some of the Microsoft tools. Like I said my guess is that it would be less secure, but I don't really know. I know I have a 10gb, file system limit, so I'm assuming my db would have to share that space.

• How to run a complete GUI as root?

Note, that I don't just want to "enable root login?", but run my GUI from bottom-up as root. I don't want to type my password for anything but just for login and have total control over it.   I am currently deciding between a CMS (joomla OR wordpress )to dive deep into. I think I would go for wordpress, but the only thing thats holding me back are any potential issues with updating wordpress- that updating wordpress can break plugins, but is necessary because of security issues. How drastic are the changes in wordpress? say over a period of 2-3 years? from the perspective of someone intending to dive head first in its code. Should I fear regular updates breaking stuff ?
