  • How can I configure OSX/Windows7 to send ALL traffic though VPN tunnel?

    - by lrrrgg
While connected to a VPN (SwissVPN service), a content filter at a site I'm working at blocked a web page. This was perplexing, since the local site's filter should not be able to see my traffic, right? So I assume my web browsing activity was not going through the VPN tunnel. How can I configure the OS to send ALL traffic though the currently connected VPN tunnel? I'm using OSX Lion and Windows 7. Thanks!

  • Can a virus attack my BIOS to disable the DVD drive?

    - by user636547
A friend's laptop DVD drive is suddenly no longer detected. It's going to be difficult to walk him through going into the BIOS (he's not local). I wonder if it is even worthwhile i.e. whether the BIOS settings can be corrupted by a virus. Are BIOS settings formatted in a standard way such that a virus writer would know what to alter? FYI, he did reinstall the OS and the drive is still not detected.

  • How do I keep a server connected as a volume after sleep?

    - by Jason
This would be in OS X 10.6... I know I can connect a server share as a volume and do so via a script so every time I boot up it gets mapped. How can I make sure that same share is mapped after my computer comes out of sleep mode? It seems like the connection gets dropped. Can the same process map the drive for me when I boot up?

  • What do the "ALL"s in the line " %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL " in Ubuntu's /etc/sudoers file stand for?

    - by sri
What does each ALL mean? I understand that the whole line indicates that the admin group members get admininstartive privileges, but would like to know more info about the position of the ALLS and if they each refer to a different set of permissions or something like that? $sudo cat /etc/sudoers ... # User privilege Information root ALL=(ALL) ALL #... %sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL # #includedir /etc/sudoers.d #Members of the admin group may gain root privileges %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL # If it matters: OS: Ubuntu : 10.4

  • How can I make Firefox ignore Next/Prev-Buttons on the Keyboard?

    - by ThiefMaster
My ThinkPad notebook has "next page" and "previous page" buttons right next to the cursor keys. While writing code (sometimes in textareas on pages such as StackOverflow) accidentally hitting one of these keys is very annoying - either you navigate away or you get the "do you really want to navigate way" prompt. I never use those keys anyway so I wonder if there's an option in Firefox to ignore those keys. An option to remap them globally or simply disable them would (OS: Windows 7) be fine, too.

  • What's a lightweight alternative to Word / Writer? [closed]

    - by vemv
I'm looking for a desktop, cross-OS, Word/Writer-like program (this is, that lets the user format the content, as opposed to source code editors) without all the feature bloat + performance overhead I'd get with an office suite. Ideally, most of its features would be focused on: the text editing itself - clever replaces, indentation control, etc, and separating the content from its presentation, à la HTML/CSS. Which programs match these features?

  • Outside of a web browser, does the Javascript programming language do anything? [closed]

    - by Stom
I often hear people talking about Javascript in conjunction with web browser programming/web page programming and such, and/or form logic, etc. However, outside of a browser, can Javascript source be written and compiled to work outside of a browser, much like C/C++ can work in a terminal window/GUI window with a library? Can I write "Hello World" in Javascript in a console terminal on a modern OS GUI and such like C?

  • (Mac Terminal) Looking for a recommendation for a BASH manual

    - by Mental Sticks
Hi, I've just begun to use the Terminal in Mac OS X and I've found the 'man' command very useful, although very often the explanations are too compact or complicated for me. I am looking for a very basic reference guide – like O'Reilly makes, for example. But in there I didn't find an entry for basic commands like ls or ln and a layman's explanation of all the flags and options. Could anybody recommend me something? Thansk a bunch in advance

    - by user35489
When viewing a particular text file in vim or less on Linux or OS X, all the en dashes show up as highlighted "<97" characters. What control-sequence do I need to type in order to substitute the hyphens back? For example, the following doesn't work in vim: % s/<97>/--/g Typing bracket nine seven bracket is not the same as typing the actual special character.

    - by user1438038
I want to improve security of my Apache webserver. Open: /etc/apache2/conf.d/security Edit: ServerTokens Prod ServerSignature Off Reload/Restart: /etc/init.d/apache2 reload /etc/init.d/apache2 restart The values Prod and Off should be fine, but I get these errors: ServerTokens takes one argument, Determine tokens displayed in the Server: header - Min(imal), OS or Full Action 'configtest' failed. ServerSignature takes one argument, En-/disable server signature (on|off|email) Action 'configtest' failed. Where do I find Apache's configtest declaration, so I can tell it to accept Prod and Off?
