  Hi, let's say you have an game server which creating text log files of gamers actions, and from time to time you need to lookup something in those logs files (like investigating an scam or loosing an item). Just for example you have 100 files and each file have size between 20MB and 50MB - How you would search them quickly? What I have already tried to do is create several threads and each invidual thread will map his own file to memory (let say memory should not be problem if it not exceed 500MB of ram) perform search here, result was something around 1 second per file : File:a26.log - read in: 0.891, lines: 625282, matches: 78848 Is there better way how to do that ? - because it seems to me kinda slow. thanks. (java was used for this case)

  Hi WPF lovers, I want to display all the possible enum values as Radio buttons. I am using popular RadioButtonList style to display the radiobutton from my enum using DataProvider in a Listcontrol. I can get all the radio buttons but the text appear with the radio button is not user friendly. • Streaming data to the browser as a file of unknown size

  I have some data which is queried from the database and I'd like to send it to the client as a csv file. The file size varies each time due to the fact that the DB data returned can be of any size. Instead of saving this file to the hard disk, I'd like to send it to the browser at the same time it's being processed into a CSV by my algorithm. Response.Write seems useless. For some reason, the file download dialog is only displayed once my processing is finished. This seems odd as I'm writting all my output to the Response.Output stream. I have downloaded files on the web before where the filesize is not known and the browser just keeps on downloading. Is there any way to achieve this?   I'm surprised I can't find a clear answer to this. So, in jQuery, you can do this: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000); $(someElements).remove(); Which, will start a fadeOut animation, but before it finishes executing in the 1 second duration, the elements are removed from the DOM. But how is this possible? I keep reading the JavaScript is single threaded. ( Is javascript guaranteed to be single-threaded? ) This question is not "How do I fix this?" I know I can do either: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000).promise().done(function() { $(someElements).remove();});, or even better:$(someElements).fadeOut(1000, function() { $(this).remove(); } ); What I don't understand is how JavaScript runs in a "single thread" but I'm able to use these jQuery functions that execute asynchronously and visibly see the DOM change in different places at the same time. How does it work?

• How to stop an activity with GL view. Application not responding

  I have an activity that I want to programmatically stop after some elapsed time. I have a GL view running. My understanding is that the GLSurfaceView.renderer is running in its own thread, so I created a handler instantiated from the activity. In the GLSurfaceView I post a message. The handler then attempts to stop the activity with the following: onStop(); finish(); The activity seems to close. However, if I try to restart the application, I get a blank screen, the phone is practically locked up and eventually I get a message that the activity in the application is not responding. I'm also getting geting a wake lock, ie PowerManager.newWakeLock(...). When I try to release it, I get an exception. Not sure if its the GL view of the wake lock which is causing me troubles. Any ideas appreciated.

• Can I have fixed typed ArrayList in C#, just like C++?

  I have an ArrayList which contains fixed type of objects. However everytime I need to extract an object a particular index, I need to typecast it to my user defined type from object type. Is there a way in C# to declare ArrayList of fixed types just like Java and C++, or is there a work around to avoid the typecasting everytime? Edit: I apologize I forgot mentioning that I require the datastructure to be thread-safe, which List is not. Otherwise I would have just used a normal Array. But I want to save myself from the effort of explicitly locking and unlocking while writing the array. So I thought of using ArrayList, synchronize it, but it requires typecasting every time.

• Apache Axis web service clients vs plain SOAP requests.

  I'm looking for the best way to consume a Java web service that returns rather large and complex objects. I am currently using Apache Axis clients generated from the wsdl, (using eclipse "generate web service client" tool). We have concerns about performance of this. The service proxy objects are not thread safe, and they are rather heavy to instantiate, 2-3 MB on the JVM. The other alternative is making HTTP connections and building a String SOAP requests. I would have to interpret the response, and build objects from the XML. Would this be a better alternative to the heavy axis objects? I searched for good reading on this, if any one had any links I would greatly appreciate it.

• Complex nib is slow to load

  I'm looking for advice about a nib that's very slow to load. It's big and complex, with lots of subviews and doodads. When I fire my UINavController to push it, it's noticeably laggy (maybe almost a second) on my 3G. It sits there with the table cell selected and nothing else happening for long enough to make you wonder if it's broken. I wonder about pre-loading it in another thread while the user is on the previous view. I could probably fire the selector in the background with a delay in the previous view's viewDidAppear, and then keep it in a property until push time comes. Thoughts?

I wish to go through the database of Wikipedia (let's say the English one), and do statistics. For example, I am interested in how many active editors (which should be defined) Wikipedia had at each point of time (let's say in the last 2 years). I don't know how to build such a database, how to access it, how to know which types of data it has and so on. So my questions are: What tools do I need for this (besides basic R) ? MySQL on my computer? RODBC database connection? How do you start planning for such a project?

  I have inherited a rails forum (Rails 2.3.2 I think) that alerts people of new posts/replies for the forums or threads they are watching. To make it easier for people to answer to threads I would like to enable reply-to-post, similar to basecamp and a bunch of other forums and tools out there. I would add a separator text (like "----add your reply above this line-----") in the original email. I need to: - process incoming email - extract the new text (above the separator line) - ideally strip out text like "on ... [email protected] wrote:" that is automatically added by some mail clients - identify the thread this email is referring to (either using the incoming address or the subject line) - identify the sender - post the content as new reply Any suggestions on how to get started?   As a very novice Java programmer, I probably should not mess with that kind of things. Unfortunately, I'm using a library which have a method that accepts a ByteBuffer object and throws when I try to use it: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException: Unable to retrieve native address from ByteBuffer object Is it because I'm not using a non-direct buffer? edit: There's not a lot of my code there. The library I'm using is jNetPcap, and I'm trying to dump a packet to file. My code takes an existing packet, and extract a ByteBuffer out of it: byte[] bytes = m_packet.getByteArray(0, m_packet.size()); ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.wrap(bytes); Then it calls on of the dump methods of jNetPcap that takes a ByteBuffer.

• jQuery dialog box not opening 2nd time

  I found this thread which basically has the same issue I have. But their solution is not working for me. The dialog appears the first time I click the submit button, but not the 2nd time. I'm opening the dialog box after a form submission. UPDATE I finally got it working. • Application freezes when performing help file search

  I have a large C# application and a help file in *.chm format. When I press F1 to display this help file and select "Search" tab, type something and click "List Topics" button, both the help window and the entire application freeze. What's interesting when I simply open the *.chm file in the Windows Explorer, the search functionality works brilliantly. In order to display the help file from my application, I am executing: Help.ShowHelp(this, helpFileName); This method is executed from within the main form of the application on the UI thread.

• Android: Touch seriously slowing my application

  Hi all, I've been raking my brains on this one for a while. when I'm running my application (opengl game) eveyrthing goes fine but when I touch the screen my application slows down quite seriously (not noticeable on powerful phones like the nexus one, but on the htc magic it gets quite annoying). I did a trace and found out that the touch events seem to be handled in a different thread and even if it doesn't take so much processing time I think androids ability to switch between threads is not so good... What is the best way to handle touch when speed is an issue ?   I have to develop a class which can run it's own hard-coded task in a background thread and communicate with container class sending him progress updates and taking messages from it. I believe I am going to extend BackgroundWorker class but it looks a bit weird to extend and I haven't managed to find a good example wit Google. Can you share a link to a good example of solving such a task? Please don't offer placing a BackgroundWorker visually on a form and reading the standard tutorial, it's not for my case. Maybe I'd better not extend but encapsulate a BackgroundWorker, but I hardly understand how to use it outide WinForms designer either :-(

• Removing duplicates (within a given tolerance) from a Numpy array of vectors

  I have an Nx5 array containing N vectors of form 'id', 'x', 'y', 'z' and 'energy'. I need to remove duplicate points (i.e. where x, y, z all match) within a tolerance of say 0.1. Ideally I could create a function where I pass in the array, columns that need to match and a tolerance on the match. Following this thread on Scipy-user, I can remove duplicates based on a full array using record arrays, but I need to just match part of an array. Moreover this will not match within a certain tolerance. I could laboriously iterate through with a for loop in Python but is there a better Numponic way?

  I'm trying to download a lot of files after downloading a sql statement must insert a record. I'm using System.Net.Client to download each file synchronously, still it could be done asynchronous. There's no relation or dependency between each download. At first I just tried to use WebClient.DownloadFileAsync but that shutted the program down and killed all the download processes/threads. Second I tried to create a wait routine something like this; while (processedFiles < totalFiles) Thread.Sleep(1000) This freezed everything. So could someone tell me which aproach to take to implement this Async?
