• How to copy files without slowing down my app?

  I have a bunch of little files in my assets which need to be copied to the SD-card on the first start of my App. The copy code i got from here placed in an IntentService works like a charm. However, when I start to copy many litte files, the whole app gets increddible slow (I'm not really sure why by the way), which is a really bad experience for the user on first start. As I realised other apps running normal in that time, I tried to start a child process for the service, which didn't work, as I can't acess my assets from another process as far as I understood. Has anybody out there an idea how a) to copy the files without blocking my app b) to get through to my assets from a private process (process=":myOtherProcess" in Manifest) or c) solve the problem in a complete different way Edit: To make this clearer: The copying allready takes place in a seperate thread (started automaticaly by IntentService). The problem is not to separate the task of copying but that the copying in a dedicated thread somehow affects the rest of the app (e.g. blocking to many app-specific resources?) but not other apps (so it's not blocking the whole CPU or someting) Edit2: Problem solved, it turns out, there wasn't really a problem. • Any reason not to use USE_ETAGS with CommonMiddleware in Django?

  The only reason I can think of is that calculating ETag's might be expensive. If pages change very quickly, the browser's cache is likely to be invalidated by the ETag. In that case, calculating the ETag would be a waste of time. On the other hand, a giving a 304 response when possible minimizes the amount of time spent in transmission. What are some good guidelines for when ETag's are likely to be a net winner when implemented with Django's CommonMiddleware?

• Display two images side by side on an HTML Page

  I am trying to place two images of the same size side-by-side. If I use a "table" then I am able to display both images side-by-side. But in my CSS Stylesheet I am using a custom format for the table and this shows on the page containing the images too. But I want to just display both images without any custom background or border etc. I tried using "div", "span", "ul" & "li" etc. but failed in each case. How can I place two images (of same size) in a single line, without using a "table"? If I have to use "table" for the same, then how can I use two (or more) different formatting for my tables using CSS? Thank you. Lalit Kumar Barik

• How to avoid web server traffic peak resulting from iOS Newsstand app receiving a remote notification?

  I'm developing an iOS Newsstand app. If it is suspended or not running and connected to a WLAN, Newsstand apps can be triggered by a Push remote notification to download the latest issue (in our case around 100MB) in the background. I'm using Urban Airship for the delivery of the Push broadcast. I'm now worrying about many many iOS devices hitting the web server for one big download more or less at the same time, because I expect the majority of the devices will receive the notification in a very short timeframe. Instead of broadcasts to all devices, should I rather send individual notifications to batches of small groups of devices, spreading them out over a longer period of time? And/or would a CDN like Amazon Cloudfront solve that issue easier/anyway?

So Big-O would be O((2^n)*n) (since we drop the constant 2)... is that correct? And n*(2^n) is worse than n^2. if n = 4 then (4*(2^4)) = 64 (4^2) = 16 if n = 100 then (10*(2^10)) = 10240 (10^2) = 100 2. Is there a faster way to generate a power set, or is this about optimal?

• URL losing port number in every page load

  I'm currently taking care of a certain local website. The default port has been changed, and can no longer be not included in the URL due to technical reasons, so now i'm using a certain port in the end of the IP at the URL, for example 100.100.100.100/website.asp no longer works 100.100.100.100:10/website.asp with the port, works. Works, though I can't click in any link or anything and the port vanishes (new page doesn't load). Then I keep the same URL and just include the port at the end of the IP and it works again, until I click in another link inside of it. I have access to changing each link, but I guess that would not be the right approach. How should I procceed ?

Because this is a method from reflection, it takes a lot of time compared to normal keywords or method calls. I am wondering if there are some good alternatives for this method calls?

• ASP.NET problem - Firebug shows odd behaviour

  I have an ASP.NET application that does a large database read. It loads up a gridview inside an update panel. In VS2008, just running on my local machine, it runs fantastically. In production (identical code, just published and put on one of our network servers), it runs slow as dirt. Debug is set to false, so this is not the cause of the slow down. I'm not an experienced web developer, so besides that, feel free to suggest the obvious. I have been using Firebug to determine what's going on, and here is what that has turned up: On production, there are around 500 requests. The timeline bar is very short. The size column varies from run to run, but is always the same for the duration of the run. Locally, there are about 30 requests. The timeline bar takes up the entire space. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Also, I can't find much of anything on the web about this, so any references are helpful too.

• Struts 1 - problem in showing ActionMessages through a JSP page

  I am using Struts 1.3.10. I am trying to display ActionMessage and ActionError set by Action class through a JSP page. The problem is that the ActionErrors are displaying well but ActionMessages are not displaying. When I debug the application, I found that the messages (reference variable of ActionMessages) contains messages. I also saved those messages through saveMessages(request, messages) method of Action class. So, I think that the problem is in the JSP code through which I am trying to display those messages.   Is there a way to see how many context switches each thread generates? (both in and out if possible) Either in X/s, or to let it run and give aggregated data after some time. (either on linux or on windows) I have found only tools that give aggregated context-switching number for whole os or per process. My program makes many context switches (50k/s), probably a lot not necessary, but I am not sure where to start optimizing, where do most of those happen.

• Quickest way to compare a buch of array or list of values.

  Can you please let me know on the quickest and efficient way to compare a large set of values. Its like there are a list of parent codes(string) and each code has a series of child values(string). The child lists have to be compared with each other and find out duplicates and count how many times they repeat. code1(code1_value1, code1_value2, code3_value3, ..., code1_valueN); code2(code2_value1, code1_value2, code2_value3, ..., code2_valueN); code3(code2_value1, code3_value2, code3_value3, ..., code3_valueN); . . . codeN(codeN_value1, codeN_value2, codeN_value3, ..., codeN_valueN); The lists are huge say like there are 100 parent codes and each has about 250 values in them. There will not be duplicates within a code list. Doing it in java and the solution i could figure out is. Store the values of first set of code in as codeMap.put(codeValue, duplicateCount). The count initialized to 0. Then compare the rest of the values with this. If its in the map then increment the count otherwise append it to the map. The downfall of this is to get the duplicates. Another iteration needs to be performed on a very large list. An alternative is to maintain another hashmap for duplicates like duplicateCodeMap.put(codeValue, duplicateCount) and change the initial hashmap to codeMap.put(codeValue, codeValue). Speed is what is requirement. Hope one of you can help me with it.

• Writing a script to bypass college login page

  My college has a silly login page that requires you to download a whole bunch of garbage that a lot of us don't need (Norton Anti-virus, Antispyware software, etc.). We have to have them running to get on the internet on campus. Though, if you are on Linux, or at least set your user-agent to linux, the requirements are gone. We could easily use Firefox with the useragent switcher to bypass this, but it'd be nice to create a script that automates this. How would this be possible? I figure this could be written in python, and could grab the webpage with curl specifying a user agent? How would I go about posting the data back to the servers? Thanks

• Why Solr admin query page interprets UTF-8 as ISO-8859-1

  I deploy a war to my Tomcat 6.0.35 on Win7 64bit and when I use full-interface query page (I mean form.jsp) in Solr Admin to query 2 Chinese character (say it's C1C2) , the debug info shows: <lst name="debug"> <str name="rawquerystring">æ°è</str> <str name="querystring">æ°è</str> <str name="parsedquery">NEWSID:æ°è</str> <str name="parsedquery_toString">NEWSID:æ°è</str> ... You can see C1C2 becomes æ°è. I deploy same war file to Tomcat on Linux or on another Win7 64bit of my colleagues' computer, the encoding acts well. Does anyone know why and how can I avoid this problem? Thanks in advance!

  I am profiling an iPhone app and I noticed a strange pattern. In a certain block of code that's called quite frequently... [item setQuadrant:[NSNumber numberWithInt:a]]; [item setIndex:[NSNumber numberWithInt:b]]; [item setTimestamp:[NSNumber numberWithInt:c]]; [item setState:[NSNumber numberWithInt:d]]; [item setCompletionPercentage:[NSNumber numberWithInt:e]]; [item setId_:[NSNumber numberWithInt:f]]; ...the first call to [NSNumber numberWithInt:] takes an inordinate amount of time, in the order of 10-15x that of the remaining calls. I've verified that the results are consistent if I shuffle the lines (the first line is always the slow one, by the same ratio). Is there something going on that I'm not aware of? Perhaps this happens because this block is inside a try/catch?

• Database for Large number of 1kB data chunks (MySQL?)

  I have a very large dataset, each item in the dataset being roughly 1kB in size. The data needs to be queried rapidly by many applications distributed over a network. The dataset has more than a million items (so 500 million+ 1kB data chunks). What would be the best method to storing this dataset (need to allow adding more items, and reading them rapidly, but never modifying already added data)? Would using a MySQL DB using the binary blob format be appropriate? Or should each of these be stored as files on a file system? edit: the number is 1 million items now, but needs to be able to scale to well over 500 million items easily.

It works in IE, but when I test in FireFox the form submits. I tried adding another button, this time with no attached jQuery code and the same thing happens.
