  • mysqld causes high CPU load

    My mysqld goes to use 99.9% of CPU for variable time (between 2 - 20 minutes), and then goes back to normal 0.1% - 5%.   • ISA 2006 SP1 - SSL Client Certificate Authentication in Workgroup Environment

    We have an IIS6 website that was previously published using an ISA 2006 SP1 standard server publishing rule. In IIS we had required a client certificate be provided before the website could be accessed... this all worked fine and dandy. Now we wish to use a web publishing rule on ISA 2006 SP1 for this same website. However, it seems the client certificate doesn't get processed now, so of course the user can't access the website. I've read a few articles stating the CA for the certificate needs to be installed in the trusted root certificate authorities store on the ISA Server (i have done this), as well as installing the client certificate on the ISA Server (done as well). I have also verified that the ISA Server is able to access the CRL for our CA no problem... In the listener properties for the web publishing rule, under Authentication, and Client Authentication Method, there is an option for SSL Client Certificate Authentication... i select this, but it appears the only Authentication Validation Method selectable is Windows (Active Directory).... there is no Active Directory in this environment. When i configure the rule with the defaults, I then try to hit my website and it prompts for my certificate, i choose it and hit ok... then I'm given the following error Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The server denied the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Contact the server administrator. (12202) I check the event logs on the ISA Server and in Security Logs, i see Event ID 536, Failure Aud. The reason: The NetLogon component is not active. I think this is pretty obvious since there is no active directory available. Is there a way to make this web publishing rule work using client certificates in this workgroup environment? Any suggestions or links to helpful documents would be greatly appreciated!

  • Win7 Command Prompt drives not available

    I have the opposite problem compared to the author of this question: Hard drive access denied from Windows Explorer (but works from command prompt as Admin) I can see all the drive letters for a particular server in Windows Explorer, and can navigate through them exactly as would be expected. The drive letters are displayed in Explorer in parens to the right of the path info -- finalpathportion (\\server\otherpathportions) (driveletter:) e.g. jmerrill (\\server\users) (H:) But the drive letters are not usable in a "Run as Administrator" command prompt. They have worked in the past, but I have since rebooted. I thought that perhaps I had to start a new command prompt having visited them in Explorer -- but that did not help. "net use" in the command prompt shows Unavailable H: \\server\users\jmerrill Microsoft Windows Network with similar info for the other drives. I can do net use h: /d net use h: \\server\users\jmerrill for each drive, and get the letters to be available in the command prompt. It is perhaps obvious that I don't think that it should be necessary to do that. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • cloning a kvm guest os to a vmdk file

    I have a production environment where I am having 4 Guest OS running on a Ubuntu server which uses kvm. These OS are in an LVM based setup.I want these Virtual Machines to be in a vmdk format also.Where people would do experiments with these Virtual Machines so this in a vmware environment (or it can be Xen too) would be different from the kvm server.I would not have any control on that other environment so I want to give people vmdk images of these virtual machines. The production Virtual Machines will still keep running on kvm server but the VMs on which experiments would be done would be of type vmdk.(vmdk is a constraint) Here is output of lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm1' [100.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm2' [150.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm3' [50.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm4' [100.00 GiB] inherit I was reading man page of qemu-img and what I understand is I need to first create a qcow image file which I need to populate and then convert that to a vmdk file. Is that understanding correct? Now suppose /dev/abcd/lvm4 is the virtual machine with which I am going to start this experiment.I can shutdown the production VMs for some time to do this. So is the following way correct to go on server 1 (where kvm is running) qemu-img convert -c -f raw -O vmdk /dev/abcd/lvm4 /backup/lvm4.img or it will affect the lvm4 on kvm server 1. I do not want the VM running on original server to at all loose its any of the content but also have a vmdk file for each of the Guest OS on kvm. Before I proceed with any of the above things on the production machine I just want to make sure that I am doing the correct thing so I asking here.

  • EMC VNX iSCSI setup - unsure about SP/port assignment

    We have a new VNX5300 waiting to get configured, and I need to plan out the network infrastructure before the EMC tech arrives. It has 4x1gbit iSCSI per SP (8 ports in total), and I'd like to get the most out of the performance until we jump over to 10gig iSCSI. From what I can read from the docs - the recommendation is to use only two ports per SP, with 1 active and 1 passive. Why is this? It seems kind of pointless to have quad-port i/o-modules and then recommend to not use more than two of them? Also - I'm a bit unsure about the zoning. The best practices guide state that you should separate each port on each SP from each other on different logical networks. Does this mean that I have to create 4 logical networks to be able to use all 8 ports? It also gives the following example: Does this mean that A0 and B0 should sit on the same physical switch aswell? Won't this make all traffic go on one switch (if both A1 and B1 are passive)? Edit: Another brainpuzzle I don't get it - each host (as in server) should not have more iSCSI bandwidth available than the storage processor. What on earth does this matter? If serverA have 1gbit and serverB have 100mbit, then the resulting bandwith between them is 100mbit. How can this result in some kind of oversubscription? Edit4: Wait, what. Active and passive ports? The VNX runs in a ALUA configuration with asymmetrical active/active.. there shouldn't be any passive ports, only preferred ones..

  • Cant kill process on Windows Server 2008!! - Thread in Wait:Executive State

    I hope someone can help me with our issue we are having. We have a major issue with a process that we can not kill and the only way to get rid of the process is to reboot the machine. I have tried killing it from the normal task manager but no joy. I have tried killing it using the taskkill /F command from a command prompt and no joy. The command reports as sucessful but the process remains. I have tried to start task manager with system rights by calling "psexec -s -i -d taskmgr" and attempting to kill the process but no joy I have tried killing it from Process Explorer but again the process remains. I have tried creating a scheduled task that runs under the SYSTEM name to kill the task but that also does not kill it : schtasks /create /ru system /sc once /st 13:16 /tn test1 /tr "taskkill /F /PID 1576" /it Nothing I do will kill this process. Even logging off and logging back on will not kill this process. Using Process Explorer I notice that there is on stubborn thread that is in the Wait:Executive state. I have tried to kill this thread using Process Explorer but again no joy. We are using Windows Server 2008 R2 64-Bit. The server is brand new and windows is freshly installed. Now heres the thing. We have brought two identical servers from Dell with the same specs and the same OS installed and I can not replicate this issue on the other server. Only on this server, under certain circumstances does this server process hang and can not be restarted! I have also changed the compatability mode by setting it the process to "Windows 2003" but this has not helped. I have noticed in Process Explorer that DEP is turned on but im not sure this has got any bearing on the issue ot not. Please, can someone help??

  • Best Practices for adding Exchange Archive to current 3 server setup

    I'm looking to add an Archive Database (which I know is just a Mailbox Database) to our current Exchange 2010 environment. I have done this in the past at a previous job, but we had a simpler setup than at this current job. I've been trying to find some best practices to make sure it's setup in an ideal way, but so far not finding the details I would prefer. Hoping someone on here can give me a few pointers. Currently we have a 3 server setup, Server1, Server2 and Server3. Three databases of course, DB1, DB2 and DB3. We have a DAG setup between them. Server1 has DB1 and DB3 on it, DB1 is not active, DB3 is active. Server2 has DB1 and DB2 on it, both are active. Server3 has DB2 and DB3 on it, both are not active. All three servers are virtual (VMware). Each one is setup identical to the other as follows: C:\ 60GB - OS E:\ 600GB - DB (currently only 90GB used, pointing to Datastore just for Server2) F:\ 200GB - Log (2GB used, pointing to same Datastore as above) G:\ 200GB - Restore (0 used, pointing to same Datastore as above) The drives are all set to Thin Provisioning, and it looks as though I have 600GB of available space. They have not been on Exchange that long and only have about 70GB worth of PSTs to import back in that will be going to the Archive Database, plus anything older than 2 years from their current inbox that will be moved into there. I was considering placing the Archive DB on the E:\ drive of Server3 (only) like the current DB, but wasn't sure if that was acceptable. I don't plan on setting the Archive DB up with the DAG, just plan on having it as a single repository for older emails and manually back it up every now and then. If anyone has any suggestions on this I would appreciate it the input. I've done it on a slightly smaller scale before and it worked well, but like to think it through before pulling the trigger, especially at a new job. :) Thanks again!

  • Unusually high dentry cache usage

    Problem A CentOS machine with kernel 2.6.32 and 128 GB physical RAM ran into trouble a few days ago. The responsible system administrator tells me that the PHP-FPM application was not responding to requests in a timely manner anymore due to swapping, and having seen in free that almost no memory was left, he chose to reboot the machine. I know that free memory can be a confusing concept on Linux and a reboot perhaps was the wrong thing to do. However, the mentioned administrator blames the PHP application (which I am responsible for) and refuses to investigate further. What I could find out on my own is this: Before the restart, the free memory (incl. buffers and cache) was only a couple of hundred MB. Before the restart, /proc/meminfo reported a Slab memory usage of around 90 GB (yes, GB). After the restart, the free memory was 119 GB, going down to around 100 GB within an hour, as the PHP-FPM workers (about 600 of them) were coming back to life, each of them showing between 30 and 40 MB in the RES column in top (which has been this way for months and is perfectly reasonable given the nature of the PHP application). There is nothing else in the process list that consumes an unusual or noteworthy amount of RAM. After the restart, Slab memory was around 300 MB If have been monitoring the system ever since, and most notably the Slab memory is increasing in a straight line with a rate of about 5 GB per day. Free memory as reported by free and /proc/meminfo decreases at the same rate. Slab is currently at 46 GB. However, apparently the machine experienced problems nonetheless, and I'm afraid the same will happen again in a few days when Slab surpasses 90 GB. Questions I have these questions: Am I correct in thinking that the Slab memory is always physical RAM, and the number is already subtracted from the MemFree value? Is such a high number of dentry entries normal? The PHP application has access to around 1.5 M files, however most of them are archives and not being accessed at all for regular web traffic. What could be an explanation for the fact that the number of cached inodes is much lower than the number of cached dentries, should they not be related somehow? If the system runs into memory trouble, should the kernel not free some of the dentries automatically? What could be a reason that this does not happen? Is there any way to "look into" the dentry cache to see what all this memory is (i.e. what are the paths that are being cached)? Perhaps this points to some kind of memory leak, symlink loop, or indeed to something the PHP application is doing wrong. The PHP application code as well as all asset files are mounted via GlusterFS network file system, could that have something to do with it? Please keep in mind that I can not investigate as root, only as a regular user, and that the administrator refuses to help. He won't even run the typical echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches test to see if the Slab memory is indeed reclaimable. Any insights into what could be going on and how I can investigate any further would be greatly appreciated.     I've currently put together a new system and part of that has been creating a software RAID 5 using 'mdadm' in Ubuntu Server. I successfully got to the point where I create the array using: sudo mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 I left it to do its thing overnight then used the following command to check on it: watch cat /proc/mdstat To which the following was returned: Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md0 : active raid5 sdd1[4](S) sdc1[2] sdb1[1] sda1[0](F) 5860535808 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/2] [_UU_] unused devices: <none> It appears that one has failed (and I'm not too savvy with why another is a spare). So, just to be sure that something else isn't amiss I wanted to try and re-engage the failed drive. Can someone explain how I can do that and what I should do with the spare (if anything).     I've had mixed results with using Windows Explorer to browse remote file shares. The setup: I'm at work on Windows XP SP3 Files are at home on Windows XP SP3 Two separate VPNs are available to access my PC at home corporate OpenVPN (10.1.2.3) a Hamachi/LogMeIn connection (5.1.2.3) With respect to my problem, it doesn't matter which IP I use. They both perform exactly the same way: I expect that if I open Windows Explorer and type in \\10.1.2.3\Shared I should be interrupted with a challenge for credentials, and then be able to interact with the files in the share. However, I just get that annoying dialog, "Windows cannot find '\10.1.2.3\Shared' Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item ..." However, I can take that exact same computername/sharename and with net use I can: net use * \\10.1.2.3\Shared * /user:homecomputername\username with this result: Type the password for \\5.69.83.158\C$: Drive Z: is now connected to \\5.69.83.158\C$. The command completed successfully. I can then access the files in Z: in Windows Explorer which was my original intent. Even after Z: is already mapped and the credentials are cached I still cannot bring up \\10.1.2.3\Shared in Windows Explorer. Why does the latter work, but not the former? Edit: Other services work fine, such as RDP. (I have a problem in which I can't SSH home, but I'll consider that separately.)

  • Interesting phenomenom with Windows Server 2008 R2 user access controls and NTFS ACLs

    One to try, and I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 box (or presumably 2008 R1, Windows Vista or Windows 7): i) Logon as an administrator, and create a new NTFS volume ii) Blow away the standard MS ACLS on the root of the volume (which are laughable), and replace with Administrators:Full Control, System:Full Control, e.g.: echo Y|cacls.exe d:\ /g "Administrators:F" "SYSTEM:F" iii) Now, from a Command Prompt shell window or PowerShell window, switch to that drive (cd /d D:\ or set-location D:\ ). Works fine... no issues. iv) Now, try to browse to the root of the new volume using MS Explorer... Access denied. Now, I've kind of convinced myself that it is UAC getting in the way, as you can add "Authenticated Users:List" access to D:\ and Explorer then works. I can only assume that MS Explorer isn't able to use the "admin" token for the Administrator. Browsing to explorer.exe and doing a "Run as administrator" has no effect. Any thoughts?     I have the following issue: One client computer (Windows XP) cannot access the OWA website. All other client computers can (Except another one in the same remote office). How this happened: I temporarily changed the SSL certificate on the Exchange Server yesterday. After a few minutes, I reverted back, an now the same certificate that was installed for years is back again. During these few minutes, they were in OWA on this computer and got a certificate error. What exactly happens: Internet Explorer displays the error Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, Firefox displays The connection was reset and Crome shows This webpage is not available. The connection to ... was interrupted. What I already did to try to get this working: Restart the client computer Restart the exchange server Deleted Internet Explorer browsing history In IE, Internet Options, tab Content, under Certificates deletes SSL cache Restored Internet Explorer to the default parameters I looked into certmgr.msc, but did not find a certificate related to the issue What could I do else to narrow down the origin of this problem (or better: resolve it) ? Can you give any advice ?

    Occasionally, I find my TEMP and TMP environment variables set to C:\Windows\TEMP. They should be set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp, and are configured correctly in System Properties. This manifests itself as error messages like the following: ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS2001: Source file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\gb_pz65v.0.cs' could not be found error CS2008: No inputs specified ...which occurs in various .NET applications (in particular Visual Studio 2010 or SQL Server Management Studio). Alternatively, SQL Server Management Studio will report: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: viewInfo (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer) If I run PowerShell elevated, then $env:TEMP is set correctly. If I run PowerShell non-elevated, then it's not. I believe that it should be set correctly in both cases. If not, it's the wrong way round. The same is true for CMD.EXE. Rebooting fixes it, temporarily, until something breaks it again. Presumably something loaded into Explorer.exe is messing with its environment variables, but what? The values in the registry are correct, even while this is happening: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment has TEMP = %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp HKCU\Environment has TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp By setting a breakpoint on shell32!RegenerateUserEnvironment, I'm able to trap it when it happens, but I still don't know why explorer.exe is reading the wrong environment variables. I can reproduce it consistently by broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message (I wrote a one-line C++ program to do this). Watching the activity in Process Monitor shows that explorer.exe doesn't even look at HKCU\Environment. What is going on?

  • Removing a device in "removed" state from Linux software RAID array

    My workstation has two disks(/dev/sd[ab]), both with similar partitioning. /dev/sdb failed, and cat /proc/mdstat stopped showing the second sdb partition. I ran mdadm --fail and mdadm --remove for all partitions from the failed disk on the arrays that use them, although all such commands failed with mdadm: set device faulty failed for /dev/sdb2: No such device mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sdb2: No such device or address Then I hot swapped the failed disk, partitioned the new disk and added the partitions to the respective arrays. All arrays got rebuilt properly except one, because in /dev/md2, the failed disk doesn't seem to have been removed from the array properly. Because of this, the new partition keeps getting added as a spare to the partition, and its status remains degraded.     I am struggling with the following problem. I cannot install MS JVM 3810 properly on Windows 7. When I start Interner Explorer 8 without starting any java 1.1 programs choosing Java custom settings under Internet options causes the crash of the browser. I have some Java 1.1 programs that work well in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP after the installation of MS JVM 3810. I know that it is not advised to use this old JVM but it is not a short-term option to port the programs in newer Java since it contains 3rd party components. Complete rewrite is a long-term plan. Strangely jview and appletviewer (jview /a) works from a console so the MS JVM 3810 is not completely busted just IE 8 does not like it. The problem with the appletviewer is that it cannot connect to the server even if both signed and unsigned content in Java custom settings have been set to Enable all. (Since Java custom settings was unreachable due to the crash the modifications - including My computer - were performed through the registry and pre-checked to behave correctly on Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8.) If jview was working then I could at least think of a workaround. Is there a way to configure MS JVM or jview properly on Windows 7? Another options would be: Checking Internet Explorer 9 Beta. Using virtualbox and Windows XP older IE in it. Delaying Windows 7 upgrade. ... Update Finally we have modified all the programs to work parallelly as applet and application as well. This way the programs can still be used from browser on older Windows versions. On Windows 7 the applications are started from the desktop. Installation to all user machine can easily be solved since they already have a large common application drive. The code update is fortunately only a few lines of modification: including a main method in the applet class. Furthermore instead of the starting html page a bat file is used to set the classpath before the startup with jview.

    I had to replace two hard drives in my RAID1. After adding the two new partitions the old ones are still showing up as removed while the new ones are only added as spare. I've had no luck removing the partitions marked as removed. Here's the RAID in question.   • Unable to install Xdebug

    I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   • Is post-sudden-power-loss filesystem corruption on an SSD drive's ext3 partition "expected behavior"?

    My company makes an embedded Debian Linux device that boots from an ext3 partition on an internal SSD drive. Because the device is an embedded "black box", it is usually shut down the rude way, by simply cutting power to the device via an external switch. This is normally okay, as ext3's journalling keeps things in order, so other than the occasional loss of part of a log file, things keep chugging along fine. However, we've recently seen a number of units where after a number of hard-power-cycles the ext3 partition starts to develop structural issues -- in particular, we run e2fsck on the ext3 partition and it finds a number of issues like those shown in the output listing at the bottom of this Question. Running e2fsck until it stops reporting errors (or reformatting the partition) clears the issues. My question is... what are the implications of seeing problems like this on an ext3/SSD system that has been subjected to lots of sudden/unexpected shutdowns? My feeling is that this might be a sign of a software or hardware problem in our system, since my understanding is that (barring a bug or hardware problem) ext3's journalling feature is supposed to prevent these sorts of filesystem-integrity errors. (Note: I understand that user-data is not journalled and so munged/missing/truncated user-files can happen; I'm specifically talking here about filesystem-metadata errors like those shown below) My co-worker, on the other hand, says that this is known/expected behavior because SSD controllers sometimes re-order write commands and that can cause the ext3 journal to get confused. In particular, he believes that even given normally functioning hardware and bug-free software, the ext3 journal only makes filesystem corruption less likely, not impossible, so we should not be surprised to see problems like this from time to time.   • Can't get simple Apache VHost up and running

    Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a simple Apache VHost online. I used to simply have one VHost which bound to all: <VirtualHost *:80>, but this isn't appropriate for security anymore. I need to have one VHost for localhost requests (ie my dev server) and one for incoming requests via my domain name.   • Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

    I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks!
