• Updating Banshee to 2.4

  I have banshee 2.2.1 with Ubuntu 11.10 I have been trying to update banshee to 2.4 (released yesterday) but it just isnt working, I have been using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa in terminal, from the Banshee.fm website. but after running through terminal it says this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa You are about to add the following PPA to your system: PPA for Banshee Team This PPA contains the latest stable debs of Banshee for Ubuntu. To install Banshee, you must first enable the PPA on your system: 1. Open Software Sources (System->Administration->Software Sources) 2. Navigate to the "Third Party Sources" tab. 3. Click "Add" 4. Enter the APT line below that corresponds to your Ubuntu version that starts with "deb". 5. Click "Add Source" 6. Click "Close" 7. It will prompt you to reload your software cache. Click "Reload". 8. • Oracle OpenWorld 2013: First glimpses of the new SOA Suite 12c by Lucas Jellema

  During this week’s Oracle OpenWorld Conference, we were given some sneak peeks into the short term future of the Oracle SOA Suite. During various roadmap sessions, on the demo grounds as well as in the keynote session by Thomas Kurian (the replay of which you can see here, new features were described and demonstrated, allowing us to get a fairly good overview of what is going to come for SOA Suite - later in 2013 and sometime in 2014 (probably the first half of that year). The SOA Suite plays an important part in the three themes Thomas Kurian set down for the Fusion Middleware suite of products: support for mobility, cloud and business user empowerment. Some of the highlighted new aspects of Oracle SOA Suite are: Adapters to connect from on-premise to in-the-cloud – specifically targeting SalesForce, RightNow and also providing an SDK to create custom integrations into the cloud (the first cloud adapters will be released on 11g, before the end of the year) Mobile enablement by exposing RESTful services that communicate using JSON as well as adding the capability to call out to such services (12c functionality) Enhanced functionality on Exalogic (of course it runs faster on Exalogic, up to 20 times) Modular runtime with a lighter footprint. • SSH keys fail for one user

  I just set up a new Debian server. I disabled root SSH and password auth, so you've gotta use a key file. For my primary user, everything works exactly as expected. I used ssh-keygen -t dsa and got myself a public and private key. Put one in authorized keys, put the other in a pem file locally. I wanted to create a user that I can deploy things with, so I did basically the same process. I addusered it, made a .ssh folder, ran ssh-keygen -t dsa (I also tried RSA), put the keys in their appropriate locations. No luck. I'm getting a Permission denied (publickey) error. When I use the exact same keys as the account that works, same error. When I enable password authentication, I can log in via SSH with the password. How do I debug this?

• Quickly open Windows Mobility Center in Windows 8 "tablet" mode

  I am using a Surface Pro (2013). I would like to know if there is a quick way to open the Windows Mobility Center desktop program. I like to use this program because it is easy to manipulate during the "tablet" (non-keyboard, no-mouse) mode. This program has multiple ways to be started, according to From How to Open and Use Mobility Center in Windows 7 and Windows 8: (Windows 8) Press Windows key + X and select Mobility Center Open the Control Panel and select "Windows Mobility Center" Open the Run dialog and type "mblctr.exe" and press Enter key. None of these are quick and easy when in "tablet" mode. I would ideally like to swipe from right screen edge into to open the Settings pop up and select one icon that opens the Mobility Center. Alternatively, another way I would like to have implemented would be to touch the Windows icon on the tablet screen outside of the viewing area and touch an "app" to launch the Mobility Center. Alternatively, it would be nice to have a Live Tile App that duplicates this functionality.

• How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

  I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

Now I've decided to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstalled Windows from my laptop, restoring the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business), and installed Windows 7 on my desktop PC. The problem is that I cannot activate my copy of Windows 7 on the desktop PC. Every time I try to activate it I get the error message The product key you typed cannot be used to activate windows on this computer" and the code of the error is: Code: 0xc004c008 Description: The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used. How can I solve this problem?

• Windows expand over 2 monitors in quad-monitor setup

  i just installed ubuntu 11.10 with my previous hardware setup: 4 monitors and 2 identical nvidia graphic cards. draging windows around all 4 monitors works nice, but when i maximize a window it expand always over 2 screens.   I tried to install bumblebee on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS by following steps on ubuntuwiki site.   Been doing some work in MonoDroid and found that I needed to pass a user entered value from on Activity to another Activity in MonoDroid.  Here's how I did it. In my sending Activity, I need to take some user user entered data and send it to my second activity.  Here is the code:             string UserId = Convert.ToString(et.Text);            if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(UserId))            {                Intent i = new Intent();                i.SetClass(this, typeof(CustomList));                i.AddFlags(ActivityFlags.NewTask);                i.PutExtra("TwitterId", UserId);                StartActivity(i);            }  In this code, I have called .PutExtra and  passed it with a key.  In this case, I am passing a Twitter id.  In the code that is receiving the data, the code to retrieve the Twitter id is: string twitterId = Intent.GetStringExtra("TwitterId"); The call to GetStringExtra() returns the value passed on the key.

• JavaServer Faces 2.0 for the Cloud

  A new article now up on otn/java by Deepak Vohra titled “JSF 2.0 for the Cloud, Part One,” shows how JavaServer Faces 2.0 provides features ideally suited for the virtualized computing resources of the cloud. The article focuses on @ManagedBean annotation, implicit navigation, and resource handling. Vohra illustrates how the container-based model found in Java EE 7, which allows portable applications to target single machines as well as large clusters, is well suited to the cloud architecture. From the article-- “Cloud services might not have been a factor when JavaServer Faces 2.0 (JSF 2.0) was developed, but JSF 2.0 provides features ideally suited for the cloud, for example:•    The path-based resource handling in JSF 2.0 makes handling virtualized resources much easier and provides scalability with composite components.•    REST-style GET requests and bookmarkable URLs in JSF 2.0 support the cloud architecture. • Keyboard / keymap problems with Xubuntu 12.04 + NX nomachine

  I'm running NX client on my Macbook Pro to connect to a Xubuntu 12.04 desktop at work. I have configured NX client to start up a console upon connection. I am able to connect to my remote linux machine and I get a simple xterm console. However, when I run xfce4-session, half my keys no longer work. For example, when I launch a terminal, I typing a, s, or d works, but if type w, e, r, or t, the cursor just blinks. If I ctrl-C out of xfce4-session, all the keys work fine in my xterm console. If I run xev, this is the output for when I hit a key that works: KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, root 0x373, subw 0x0, time 170160781, (-45,-21), root:(824,429), state 0x4, keycode 16 (keysym 0x63, c), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (03) "" XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, root 0x373, subw 0x0, time 170160781, (-45,-21), root:(824,429), state 0x4, keycode 67 (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), same_screen YES, XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 63 XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False but when I hit a key that doesn't work: FocusOut event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, mode NotifyGrab, detail NotifyAncestor FocusIn event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, mode NotifyUngrab, detail NotifyAncestor KeymapNotify event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x0, keys: 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Any ideas on what I can do to troubleshoot this issue? Also, one thing worth mentioning is that I do not have any keyboard issues when remoting into a different Ubuntu 10 box via NX.

• Cannot activate windows 7

  I can't activate Windows 7, I get an error saying DNS name does not exist. Is something configured incorrectly somewhere? PS: I need the answer within 13 days ;) UPDATE: I had upgraded from my company's Windows Vista build, and when I connect to the company VPN and activate I get a different error: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information. The Application Event Log contains this (I took out the server name, it's one of the company servers): The client has sent an activation request to the key management service machine. • Where to Perform Authentication in REST API Server?

  I am working on a set of REST APIs that needs to be secured so that only authenticated calls will be performed. There will be multiple web apps to service these APIs. Is there a best-practice approach as to where the authentication should occur? I have thought of two possible places. Have each web app perform the authentication by using a shared authentication service. This seems to be in line with tools like Spring Security, which is configured at the web app level. Protect each web app with a "gateway" for security. In this approach, the web app never receives unauthenticated calls. This seems to be the approach of Apache HTTP Server Authentication. With this approach, would you use Apache or nginx to protect it, or something else in between Apache/nginx and your web app? For additional reference, the authentication is similar to services like AWS that have a non-secret identifier combined with a shared secret key. I am also considering using HMAC. Also, we are writing the web services in Java using Spring. Update: To clarify, each request needs to be authenticated with the identifier and secret key. This is similar to how AWS REST requests work.

• powertop keeps telling me to turn off the same thing, over and over

  I am running an ubuntu lucid laptop on battery. I want to make my power last as long as possible. Aswell as the normal things like turn down screen brightness, and turn off wifi, I'm using powertop. It will sometimes tell me things, e.g.: Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key OK, I press the U key to do that. However a few minutes later it will give me the same suggestion, it's as if it never enabled USB autosuspend the first time. It does this for other things aswell, not just USB autosuspend. e.g. it'll give me this message frequently: An audio device is active 100.0% of the time: hwC0D1 LSI ID 1040 Q - Quit R - Refresh A - Turn HD audio powersave on Is there anything I can do to make these choices 'stick'? Or do I have some unfortunatle hardware that won't obey linux? (If so, is there any way to confirm this?)

• MySQL replication/connection failing over SSL

  I set up two MySQL servers where one is replicating from the other. They both work perfectly, but once I turn on SSL I get the following error: ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error I get the same error running from command line like so: mysql --ssl=1 --ssl-ca=/etc/mysql/certificates/ca-cert.pem --ssl-cert=/etc/mysql/certificates/client-cert.pem --ssl-key=/etc/mysql/certificates/client-key.pem --user=slave --password=slavepassword --host=master.url.com Both MySQL servers are running on version 5.0.77. There is a difference that MySQL in the master server was compiled under x86_64 while in the slave server under i686. Also both machines are running CentOS 5. Plus I generated certificates as per this page. Any idea for finding a solution?

• 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

  One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1.   Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources>  <Style TargetType="Button"         x:Key="NormalButton">    <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"            Value="Left" />    <Setter Property="MinWidth"            Value="50" />    <Setter Property="Margin"            Value="10" />  </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Add a ToolTip to still display the words you had before in the Content and you will now have better looking buttons, as shown in Figure 3.   Figure 3: Using pictures instead of words can be an effective method of communication The XAML to produce Figure 3 is shown in the following listing: <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Home.jpg" />  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Log.jpg" />  </Button></StackPanel> You will also need to add the following XAML to the User Control’s Resources section. <Style TargetType="Image"        x:Key="NormalImage">  <Setter Property="Width"          Value="50" /></Style> Add Multiple Controls to Content Now, since the Content can be whatever we want, you could also modify the Content of each button to be a StackPanel control. Then you can have an image and text within the button. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Home.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Home"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Log.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Logs"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button></StackPanel> You will need to add one more resource for the TextBlock control too. <Style TargetType="TextBlock"        x:Key="NormalTextBlock">  <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"          Value="Center" /></Style> All of the above will now produce the following:   Figure 4: Add multiple controls to the content to make your buttons even more interesting. Summary While this is a simple example, you can see how XAML Content has great flexibility. You could add a MediaElement control as the content of a Button and play a video within the Button. Not that you would necessarily do this, but it does work. What is nice about adding different content within the Button control is you still get the Click event and other attributes of a button, but it does necessarily look like a normal button. • How to remap CAPSLOCK to ESC in Linux Mint 12

  I would like to remap the CAPSLOCK key to ESC as this is easier to use in Vim. I can make it in Ubuntu 11.04 as there's an option for this in Keyborad configuration. But recently I switched to use Linux Mint and found that there's no such option. I don't know whether it is the gnome3 that makes this happen, as there are only some basic features to customize. Hoping someone can help me remap the key, thanks in advance. found this article, but the options are not found in Mint 12
