• How to implement web cache: internal fragmentation VS external fragmentation

  Hi there: I come up with this question when play with Firefox web cache: in which approach does the browser cache a response in limited disk space(take my configuration as an example, 50MB is the upper bound)? I think two ways can be employed. One is cache the total response object one by one, but this is inefficient and will introduce external fragmentation, thus the total cache space may not be fully used. The second is take the total space(50MB) as a consecutive file, splitting it into fixed-length slots; incoming response objects will also be treated blocks of data with the same length as the slots. We can fill slots until the whole file is run out of, then some displacement algorithm can be used to swap out the old cached objects. The latter approach will of course bing in internal fragmentation, but in my opinion is easier to implement and maintain than the first strategy. But when I enter Firefox's Cache directory, I find it (maybe) use a different method: a lot of varied-length files reside in that directory and all those files are filled with undisplayable characters. I don't but really want to know what mechanism that a commercial browser, e.g. Firefoix, employed to implement web cache. Regards.

• How to Use XSLT to Replace Coordinate Separator With List of Tuples?

  I have a space-separated list of coordinate tuples. Each tuple consists of a space-separated list of 2-dimensional coordinates. E.g. "1.1 2.8 1.2 2.9" represents a line from POINT(1.1 2.8) to POINT(1.2 2.9). I need this to instead be "1.1,2.8 1.2,2.9". How would I use XSLT to perform the replacement of space-to-comma between pairs of numbers? I have the "string(gml:LinearRing/gml:posList)". This is being used on a Java Web Service that spits out GML 3.1.1 features with geometries. The service supports optional KML output, by using XSLT to transform the GML document into a KML document (at least, the chunks deemed "important"). I am locked into XSLT 1.0, so regex from XSLT 2.0 is not an option. I am aware that GML uses lat/lon while KML uses lon/lat. That's being handled before XSLT, though it would be nice to have that also done with XSLT.

• CRONTAB doesn't finish svndump

  I just discovered that the automated dumps I've been creating of my SVN repository have been getting cut off early and basically only half the dump is there. It's not an emergency, but I hate being in this situation. It defeats the purpose of making automated backups in the first place. The command I'm using is below. If I execute it manually in the terminal, it completes fine; the output.txt file is 16 megs in size with all 335 revisions. But if I leave it to crontab, it bails at the halfway mark, at around 8.1 megs and only the first 169 revisions. # m h dom mon dow command 18 00 * * * svnadmin dump /var/svn/repos/myproject > /home/andrew/output.txt I actually save to a dated gzipped file, and there's no shortage of space on the server, so this is not a disk space issue. It seems to bail after two seconds, so this could be a time issue, but the file size is the same every single time for the past month, so I don't think it's that either. Does crontab execute within a limited memory space?

• Keeping sync in multiplayer RTS game that uses floating point arithmetic

  I'm writing a 2D space RTS game in C#. Single player works. Now I want to add some multiplayer functionality. I googled for it and it seems there is only one way to have thousands of units continuously moving without a powerful net connection: send only the commands through the network while running the same simulation at every player. And now there is a problem the entire engine uses doubles everywhere. And floating point calculations are depends heavily on compiler optimalizations and cpu architecture so it is very hard to keep things syncronized. And it is not grid based at all, and have a simple phisics engine to move the space-ships (space ships have impulse and angular-momentum...). So recoding the entire stuff to use fixed point would be quite cumbersome (but probably the only solution). So I have 2 options so far: Say bye to the current code and restart from scratch using integers Make the game LAN only where there is enough bandwidth to have 8 players with thousands of units and sending the positions and orientation etc in (almost) every frame... So I looking for better opinions, (or even tips on migrating the code to fixed-point without messing everything up...)

• Should developers *really* have private offices?

  We will probably be moving within a year, so we have to make some decisions regarding office layout. At the moment, our company is basically one big office. When our developers can't bother to be disturbed at all, we all have our own headphones to mute the outside world. Still, it seems a lot of people feel that private offices are no doubt the way to go. From Joel's article Private Offices Redux: Not every programmer in the world wants to work in a private office. In fact quite a few would tell you unequivocally that they prefer the camaradarie and easy information sharing of an open space. Don't fall for it. They also want M&Ms for breakfast and a pony. Open space is fun but not productive. Even though I can understand the benefit on productivity, does having a private office really result in more net productivity? There seem to be plenty of companies that create wide open spaces and still maintain good productivity. Or so it seems. (I should mention many of them use cubicles, though) What is your opinion on this? What does your company do? Is there some middle ground in this? • why does setting stderr=subprocess.STDOUT fix a subprocess.check_output call?

  I have a python script running on a small server that is called in three different ways - from within another python script, by cron, or by gammu-smsd (an SMS daemon with the wonderful mobile utility [gammu]). The script is for maintenance and contained the following kludge to measure used space on the system (presumably this is possible from within Python, but this was quick and dirty): reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], shell=True)[0:-1] Oddly enough this line would only fail when the script was called by a shell script running from gammu-smsd. The line would fail with a CalledProcessError exception saying "returned exit status 2", even though the output attribute of the CalledProcessError object contained the correct output. The only command in the sequence of shell commands that would give such an error status would be awk, with status 2 indicating a fatal error. If the python script with this line was called by cron, by another python script, or from the command line, this line would work fine. I broke my head trying to fix the environment for the script, thinking this must be the problem. Finally though I put in stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, like so: reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, shell=True)[0:-1] This was a debug measure to help me figure out if some output was coming on stderr. But after this the script started working, even when called from gammu-smsd! Why might this be the case? I ask for future reference when using subprocess...

  I'm beginning to think this is impossible, but thought I'd ask you guys. Basically it's a 2 column layout, but the "business" wants the following: -Always take up the entire browser window -Accommodate resizing of browser window -Left column will be fixed width, but that width should be flexible from page-to-page. -Left column has a region at the top with fixed height. -Left column has a bottom region. It should take up the remaining vertical space of browser window. If content is very large, it will have a scroll bar just for that region. -Right column should take up remaining horizontal space of browser window. -Right column has a region at the top with fixed height. -Right column has a bottom region. It should take up the remaining vertical space of browser window. If content is very large, it will have a scroll bar just for that region. • Reverse-projection 2D points into 3D

  Suppose we have a 3d Space with a plane on it with an arbitary equation : ax+by+cz+d=0 now suppose that we pick 3 random points on that plane: (x0,y0,z0) (x1,y1,z1) (x1,y1,z1) now i have a different point of view(camera) for this plane. i mean i have a different camera that will look at this plane from a different point of view. From that camera point of view these points have different locations. for example (x0,y0,z0) will be (x0',y0') and (x1,y1,z1) will be (x1',y1') and (x2,y2,z2) will be (x2',y2') from the new camera point of view. So here is my a little hard question! I want to pick a point for example (X,Y) from the new camera point of view and tell where it will be on that plane. All i know is that 3 points and their locations on 3d space and their projection locations on the new camera view. Do you know the coefficients of the plane-equation and the camera positions (along with the projection), or do you only have the six points? - Nils i know the location of first 3 points. therefore we can calculate the coefficients of the plane. so we know exactly where the plane is from (0,0,0) point of view. and then we have the camera that can only see the points! So the only thing that camera sees is 3 points and also it knows their locations in 3d space (and for sure their locations on 2d camera view plane). and after all i want to look at camera view, pick a point (for example (x1,y1)) and tell where is that point on that plane. (for sure this (X,Y,Z) point should fit on the plane equation). Also i know nothing about the camera location.

• WIN32 Logon question

  We have developed a ASP.NET 3.5 web application with Web Server 2008 and has implemented a custom authentication solution using active directory as the credentials store. Our front end application uses a normal login form to capture the user name and password and leverages the Win32 LogonUser method to authenticate the user’s credentials. When we are calling the LogonUser method, we are using the LOGON32_LOGON_NETWORK as the logon type. The issue we have found is that user profile folders are being created under the C:\Users folder of the web server. The folder seems to be created when a new user who has never logged on before is logging in for the first time. As the number of new users logging into the application grows, disk space is shrinking due to the large number of new user folders getting created. I need to get the token back after the authentication (authenticated \ password locked \ wrong password ) its futher use and based on logic showing different web pages Has anyone seen this behavior with the Win32 LogonUser method? Please answer the following issue: Is it possible to disable this behavior to create the folder as taking 2.78 MB of space for every new user and it eating my disck space? I have tried LOGON32_LOGON_BATCH but it was giving an error 1385 in authentication user. For any solution related to LOGON32_LOGON_BATCH, can you please confirm if that will stop creating the folders at location C:\users. Also for any possible solution I need either I am able to disable the folder to be created at C:\user or Any other option to authenticated user which will not creat folders.

• IE textarea wrap bug?

  It seems that IE starting from IE7 to IE10 wraps text in the textarea control incorrectly when using \n (or \r\n - doesn't matter - results are the same). Is this a bug in IE or they treat the html standard differently than other browsers - who is right? I have defined: <textarea id="TextArea1" runat="server" style="width: 190px; height: 390px; white-space: normal; word-wrap: normal; overflow: scroll" ></textarea> When I try to add long string like "VeryLongStringEndingWithNewLine\n" by using JavaScript code (obj.value += text;) the text is shown in one line with scroll (this is ok) but added with an additional empty line (\r\n) - why? When I try to add short string like "Short\n" multiple times, again via JavaScript code the text is on the same line (should be on the separate lines because normal wrapping should be applied). Moreover when I do postback then all \r\n's are replaced with spaces (why?) and then text parsed correctly (assuming if I used spaces instead of crlf normal wraping with space only wraps when does not fit in the area). When using FF or Chrome same control behaves correctly - long lines are shown without an additional empty next line, short lines are on the different lines, no replacement with spaces when doing postback. • Algorithm to determine if array contains n...n+m?

  I saw this question on Reddit, and there were no positive solutions presented, and I thought it would be a perfect question to ask here. This was in a thread about interview questions: Write a method that takes an int array of size m, and returns (True/False) if the array consists of the numbers n...n+m-1, all numbers in that range and only numbers in that range. The array is not guaranteed to be sorted. (For instance, {2,3,4} would return true. {1,3,1} would return false, {1,2,4} would return false. The problem I had with this one is that my interviewer kept asking me to optimize (faster O(n), less memory, etc), to the point where he claimed you could do it in one pass of the array using a constant amount of memory. Never figured that one out. Along with your solutions please indicate if they assume that the array contains unique items. Also indicate if your solution assumes the sequence starts at 1. (I've modified the question slightly to allow cases where it goes 2, 3, 4...) edit: I am now of the opinion that there does not exist a linear in time and constant in space algorithm that handles duplicates. Can anyone verify this? The duplicate problem boils down to testing to see if the array contains duplicates in O(n) time, O(1) space. If this can be done you can simply test first and if there are no duplicates run the algorithms posted. So can you test for dupes in O(n) time O(1) space?

• iFrame in a Content Editor Web Part

  Hi - I'm creating a page with two web parts: one with a search UI and another that displays the results. I'm using Content Editor Web Parts for both, but no matter how hard I try I can't seem to display more than a fraction of the results page in the content editor web part with the iFrame. The width seems to set fine, but no matter how I set the height (I've tried in-line, using CSS and using Javascript/JQuery), I cannot change the height of what is displayed. If I make the height something ridiculous like 3000px, I can see the empty space below, but it still only shows a small amount of the resulting page at the top of this iframe section. I've observed the HTML and the iFrame takes up all the space it's supposed to, but only shows that small sliver of the actual page the iFrame is displaying. I've tried numerous approaches from numerous articles but have come up short (pun intended). Does anyone have any experience with this or have indication as to why it would display this way or what I have to do to make this iFrame fill up the entire web part space? Thanks in advance

What I am doing is deleting values from it while the iterator 'dx' is running through it. Here is what I expect from the code : Iteration versus element being pointed to (*): 0: [*0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36] 1: [0, *1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36] ( delete 2nd and 5th element after this iteration ) 2: [0, 4, *9, 25, 36] 3: [0, 4, 9, *25, 36] ( delete -1th element after this iteration ) 4: [0, 4, 9, 25*] ( as the iterator points to nothing/end of list, the loop terminates ) .. and here is what I get: [0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36] 0 1 9 25 [0, 4, 9, 25] As you can see - what I expect is what I get - which is contrary to the behaviour I have had from other languages in such a scenario. Hence - I wanted to ask you if there is some rule like "the iterator becomes invalid if you mutate its space during iteration" in Python? Is it safe ( documented behaviour? ) in Python to do stuff like this?

  I've come across some curious behavior with regard to garbage collection in .Net. The following program will throw an OutOfMemoryException very quickly (after less than a second on a 32-bit, 2GB machine). Why is that? My best guess is that in the former case, either the CLR or the Windows VMM is lazy about allocating physical memory. The buffer never gets written to, so the physical memory is never used. When the address space runs out, the system crashes. In the latter case, the system runs out of physical memory before it runs out of address space, the GC is triggered and the objects are collected. However, here's the part I don't get. Assuming my theory is correct, why doesn't the GC trigger when the address space runs low? If my theory is incorrect, then what's the real explanation?

• Custom Font. Keeping the font width same.

What i am doing is, i am drawing each letter of the string individually, because each letter has special attributes associated with it, by taking each letter into a new string. The string gets printed, but the space between the letters is not uniform. It looks very ugly to read . I read someting about using custom fonts. But i have no Idea, if I can do it!! my code is here.   I have code that is passed a string containing XML. This XML may contain one or more instances of &#x20; (an entity reference for the blank space character). I have a requirement that these references should not be resolved (i.e. they should not be replaced with an actual space character). Is there any way for me to achieve this? Basically, given a string containing the XML: <pattern value="[A-Z0-9&#x20;]" /> I do not want it to be converted to: <pattern value="[A-Z0-9 ]" /> (What I am actually trying to achieve is to simply take an XML string and write it to a "pretty-printed" file. This is having the side-effect of resolving occurrences of &#x20; in the string to a single space character, which need to be preserved. The reason for this requirement is that the written XML document must conform to an externally-defined specification.) I have tried creating a sub-class of XmlTextReader to read from the XML string and overriding the ResolveEntity() method, but this isn't called. I have also tried assigning a custom XmlResolver.

• plupload variable upload path?

  Hi all, I'm using plupload to upload files to my server (http://www.plupload.com/index.php), however I wanted to know if there was any way of making the upload path variable. Basically I need to select the upload path folder first, then choose the files using plupload and then upload to the initially selected folder. I've tried a few different ways but I can't seem to pass along the variable folder path to the upload.php file. I'm using the flash version of plupload.
