• Problems with Ubuntu and AMD A10-4655M APU

  I have a new HP Sleekbook 6z with AMD A10-4655M APU. I tried installing Ubuntu with wubi--the first attempt ended up with a 'AMD unsupported hardware' watermark that I wasn't able to remove (the appeared when I tried to update the drivers as Ubuntu suggested) On the second attempted install Ubuntu installed (I stayed away from the suggested drivers) but the performance was extremely poor----as in Windows Vista poor. I am not sure what the solution is--if I need to wait until there is a kernel update with Ubuntu or if there are other solutions--I realise this is a new APU for the market. I would love to have Ubuntu 12.04 up and running--Windows 7 does very well with this new processor so Ubuntu should, well, be lightening speed. The trial on the Sleekbook with Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 release was a complete failure. I created a bootable USB. By using either the 'Try Ubuntu' or 'Install Ubuntu' options resulted in the usual purple Ubuntu splash screen, followed by nothing...as in a black screen without any hint of life. Interestingly one can hear the Ubuntu intro sound. In case you are wondering, this same USB was trialed subsequently on another computer with and Intel Atom Processor. Worked flawlessly. Lastly the second trial on the Sleekbook resulted in the same results as the first paragraph. Perhaps 12.10 Beta will overcome this issue, or the finalised 12.10 release in October. I don't have the expertise to know what the cause of the behaviour is-the issue could be something else entirely. Sadly, the Windows 7 performance is very good with this processor-very similar and in some instances better to the 2nd generation Intel i5 based computer I use at my workplace. Whatever the cause is for the performance with Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 Alpha 2, the situation doesn't bode well for Ubuntu. Ubuntu aside, the HP Sleekbook is a good performer for the price. I am certain once the Ubuntu issue is worked on and solutions arise, the Ubuntu performance will probably be better than ever.

  I own a hp mini. It has come up with a blue screen and says: The Application failed to intialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. i click on it twice but it stayed on the blank blue screen. i have tryed going on the safe mode thingy.. and pressing F9 and F10 and F8 but none of the above work. • port redirection on solaris 11

  I'm trying port forwarding on solaris 11. I have a mechine behind a server that use solaris 11. I try to access that mechine from the external port, and forwarded by solaris 11 mechine to that machine using the ip filter. I give ipnat.conf configuration like this: rdr net0 0.0.0.0/0 port 1428 -> 10.1.18.178 port 22 but the response appeared when I tried to remote is connection time out, but if I redirect to a solaris 11 machine itself, the configuration is running well.   My Windows 7 uses around 16 GB while Windows XP only around 4 GB hard disk space. Seems weird. I use Windows only for gaming so I dont need a lot of stuff they have to offer. What is the best way to reduce Windows 7 size? What can I delete / uninstall and how? Also I'd like reduce RAM and processor usage as much as possible (as long as it doesnt hurt game performance)... turn off all that fancy stuff and so on. What can I turn off and how? • Precision loss when transforming from cartesian to isometric

  My goal is to display a tile map in isometric projection. This tile map has 25 tiles across and 25 tiles down. Each tile is 32x32. See below for how I'm accomplishing this. World Space World Space to Screen Space Rotation (45 degrees) Using a 2D rotation matrix, I use the following: double rotation = Math.PI / 4; double rotatedX = ((tileWorldX * Math.Cos(rotation)) - ((tileWorldY * Math.Sin(rotation))); double rotatedY = ((tileWorldX * Math.Sin(rotation)) + (tileWorldY * Math.Cos(rotation))); World Space to Screen Space Scale (Y-axis reduced by 50%) Here I simply scale down the Y value by a factor of 0.5. Problem And it works, kind of. There are some tiny 1px-2px gaps between some of the tiles when rendering. I think there's some precision loss somewhere, or I'm not understanding how to get these tiles to fit together perfectly. I'm not truncating or converting my values to non-decimal types until I absolutely have to (when I pass to the render method, which only takes integers). I'm not sure how to guarantee pixel perfect rendering precision when I'm rotating and scaling on a level of higher precision. Any advice? Do I need to supply for information?

• New Dell Vostro 3550 will not boot into Live CD

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu and/or it's derivatives on my new Dell Vostro 3550 but I'm finding it impossible to boot into the live CD environment. Here are the things I've already tried: Booting from multiple versions of multiple distributions (Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 11, Mint 10) Booting from a Live USB created with unetbootin, the Linux Mint startup disk creator, the universal USB creator and dd of=linuxmint.***.iso if if=/dev/sdx. Burning a CD and booting from the internal CD drive. In the case of the USB keys with the latest versions of Ubuntu it gets to the page where I can select a boot option, but after selecting an option the screen goes black, even the back light turns off. With the older distributions the screen stays on but it starts loading and then just hangs. The CDs don't even try to boot. It starts spinning but then falls back to the default Windows install. The only way I've got it to work so far is with Wubi, but that's hardly ideal. I'd like to have two separate physical partitions with a /home and /. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

• I am having trouble booting 12.04 keyboard and little man in circle appears and then nothing

  I have a new system (ASUS 990FX mother board, 2 western dig drives, 32 gb memory, an ASUS nvidia video card (GeForce GTX560), and an ASUS DVD Burner (24B1ST)) I am struggling to get the 12.04 cd to work. I have been able to see the little man inside a circle and a graphic of a keyboard? with an == sign between them. Is this is a clue? What does it mean? After that the mauve screen with keyboard and little man in circle goes away. I get a dark background and underline cursor... even hear some work being done reading the rom.... but nothing appears on the screen. I haven't even got to the point where the graphic card is displaying improperly... it is just not displaying anything. If any kind soul has an idea about how to proceed, I am all ears. BTW, I have posted the issue to ASUS... waiting for reply.

• Deleted the GPT partition/ record

  A friend of mine had GPT partition n his Lenovo laptop. While formatting the computer and reinstalling the OS, I wiped of all the partitions, and created 4 new partitions. Now after installing everything, when I turned off the laptop. It isn't booting, I checked the BIOS settings, and tried booting Ubuntu off my life disc, it ran well, but again, I can't boot anymore. Later I figured out, that this is happening because I had deleted the GPT partition, and now the OS has tried to create MBR records, so basically this is the problem.

  Having previously detailed how to install MySQL Server, the next step is configuring MySQL. The MySQL configuration wizard can either be run immediately following installation from the MySQL installation wizard or manually from the Start Menu. Following the splash screen you can then choose whether to run a detailed or standard configuration. The detailed configuration allows you to create the optimal configuration for your specific machine, whereas the standard configuration creates a general configuration that can then be manually tuned. I chose detailed.   You are then asked to choose the type of server instance that is being configured. In this case it is a developer machine. Following this you are asked to choose the type of database usage that you expect on the server. I opted for multifunctional. You must then specify the location of the InnoDB tablespace.   Next specify the number of concurent connections to the server.   Now you must configure the networking options. I left the Strict mode enabled as this is the recommended option, but I disabled TCP/IP networking as I wanted to restrict this MySQL installation to the local machine only.   Set the character set that is best suited to your use - for me this was the default standard character set. Next up is the option to run MySQL as a service and whether or not to include the mysql dircetories in the windows PATH. I kept the install as a windows service option enabled, but unchecked the Launch MySQL server automatically option. This is because I only wanted MySQL running when I specifically want to use it. I also enabled the include in windows PATH option.   You can then change the security settings for the mysql installation. I opted to change the root password, disable root from local machines and disable annoymous access.   You are now ready to execute the configuration.   Once completed you should hopefully see the completed screen with lots of nice ticks against the various configuration tasks.

• Can I upgrade a Windows 2000 domain to 2008 and demote the 2000 server without clients attached?

  Hi all, We're planning to replace a Windows 2000 domain controller with a new 2008 DC (new hardware). We've elected to take the route of getting the 2000 domain schema up-to-snuff, join the 2008 server, upgrade it to a DC, and after replication demote the 2000 server (eventually to be taken off-line). The goal being to not have to visit all the workstations, and limited domain down-time. :) We want bring the old server here and do all the backups, Domain prep, migration and role transfers here, and then (hopefully) just plop the new 2008 back in place after it's done, and join the 2000 server back as a member server (so we can then do folder migrations, etc.). Can this server work be done off-site, without the workstations attached? If we do this will anything need to be done to the clients, once the new DC is physically in place, so they contact the new 2008 DC; or will they just 'know' and continue on using the existing domain settings/user profiles, etc.? • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • Nodejs for processing js and Nginx for handling everything else

• Java Applet Tower Defence Game needs tweeking

  Hello :) i have made a tower defence Game for my computer science class as one of my major projects, but have encountered some rather fatal roadblocks. here they are creating a menu screen (class Menu) that can set the total number of enimies, the max number of towers, starting money and the map. i tried creating a constructor in my Main class that sets all the values to whatever the Menu class passes in. I want the Menu screen to close after a difficulty has been selected and the main class to begin. Another problem i would really like some help with is instead of having to write entire arrays i would like to create a small segment of code that runs through an entire picture and sets up an array based on that pixels color.this way i can have multiple levels just dragged into a level folder and have the program read through them. users can even create their own. so a 1 if its yellow, a two if blue and a 3 if purple, then everything else = 0; you can download all the classes and code uif you'd like here sorry about having to redirect you but i wasn't sure how to efficently add a code spoiler. help is greatly appreciated

• How do you explain to an "agile" team that they still need to plan the software they write?

  This week at work I got agiled yet again. Having gone through the standard agile, TDD, shared ownership, ad hoc development methodology of never planning anything beyond a few user stories on a piece of card, verbally chewing the cud over the technicallities of a 3rd party integration ad nauseam without ever doing any real thinking or due dilligence and architecturally coupling all production code to the first test that comes into anyone's head for the past few months we reach the end of a release cycle and lo and behold the main externally visible feature that we have been developing is too slow to use, buggy, becoming labyrinthinly complex and completely inflexible. During this process "spikes" were done but never documented and not a single architectural design was ever produced (there was no FS, so what the hell eh, if you don't know what you are developing, how can you plan or research it?) - the project passed from pair to pair, each of whom only ever focused on a single user story at a time and well the result was inevitable. To resolve this I went off the radar, went (the dreaded) waterfall, planned, coded and basically didn't swap off the pair and tried as much as I could to work alone - focusing on solid architecture and specifications rather than unit tests which will come later once everything is pinned down. The code is now much better and is actually totally usable, flexible and fast. Certain people seem to have really resented me doing this and have gone out of their way to sabotage my efforts (possibly unconsciously) because it goes against the holy process of agile. So how do you, as a developer, explain to the team that it is not "un-agile" to plan their work, and how do you fit planning into the agile process? (I'm not talking about the IPM; I'm talking about sitting down with a problem and sketching out an end-to-end design that says how a problem should be solved in sufficient detail that anyone who works on the problem knows what architecture and patterns they should be using and where the new code should integrate into existing code)

• How to disable visual effects and compiz 100%

  UPDATE 1: The problem is not a monitor refresh rate flickering problem, as then the whole screen would be flickering. For me, only the application windows flicker in and out of view, then most of the time, when there do decide to show themselves, they only partly show themselves, like just top half, bottom half, left half, corner missing, window disappears when you try moving it or mouse over it even etc etc. I know it is a visual effect problem as I know my computer cannot handle visual effects and for some reason when the windows do appear partly, I can see the shadows behind the windows. Those shadows are part of the visual effects which are turned on by default for some reason. I get the same problem with 10.04, but can quickly turn off the visual effects by right clicking the desktop, selecting change background image, and in the visual effects tab, I can click on none, which stops all the visual problems. ORIGINAL QUESTION: I am having problems with 11.04 on my computer. For some reason it is enabling visual effects by default in the live cd when it should not be as my computer cannot support such effects. My computer cannot support Unity either, but it defaults to standard gnome with visual effects for some reason. It should be defaulting to standard gnome with no visual effects. THerefore, all I get is a very flickery live cd which makes it very difficult to see anything. So my question is, how do I disable the visual effects from the live cd? To put it simply, the live cd flickering is so bad, that I had to log back into my standard 10.04 install just to write this question, as I just couldn't see enough of the screen because of the flickering in 11.04 to even get to askubuntu.com...

• Using template questions in a technical interview

  I've recently been in an argument with a colleage about technical questions in interviews. As a graduate, I went round lots of companies and noticed they used the same questions. An example is "Can you write a function that determines if a number is prime or not?", 4 years later, I find that particular question is quite common even for a junior developer. I might not be looking at this the correct way, but shouldn't software houses be intelligent enought to think up their own interview questions. This may well be the case, but I've been to about 16 interviews as a graduate and the same questions came up in about 75% of them. This leads me to believe that many companies are lazy and simply Google: 'Template questions for interviewing software developers' and I kind of look down on that. Question: Is it better to use a sest of questions off some template or should software houses strive to be more original and come up with their own interview material? From my point of view, if I failed an inteview and went off and looked for good answers to the questions I messed up on, I could fly through the next interview if they questions are the same.

• Security measures for CentOS

  I have been tightening up my web server security and wanted to know what else I can do. I am running CentOS 5 with these measures: - All passwords to FTP, MySQL etc are generated from grc.com/passwords.htm and microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/create.aspx (for the ones which cannot be too long). - Running iptables with all ports shut off except for http mail and smtp, the important ports like FTP SSH are blocked to all except my static office IP. There is also no response to pings. - Rootkit Hunter running daily - The server is PCI compliant according to Comodo - Not running any crappy made php apps, we use Zend Framework for our stuff and do have kayako installed and keep them up to date. Can't really think of anything else I can do... I could implement a brute force measure, but I think I already have by simply changing my SSH port to a number above 10000 and blocking it off with iptables.

And some of our clients have demands based off HIPPA, etc. There is one now where they do not want an employee to have both wired and wireless on at same time. If the wireless is on the wired needs to be turned off automatically and vice versa. However, this can not be up to the end user to manage! I have looked for third party applications and only have found http://www.wirelessautoswitch.com Does anyone know of anything else that is out there? Or possible something that can be done via group policy, etc.?

For example, I think the Finance app is awesome, I just don't want it to occupy dedicated space on my screen (either taking the full screen, or snapped to the side). It would be great if I could run it in a window on my desktop. Is this possible? I'm think developers need to view/run/build their apps in a desktop window in order to work productively. Is this the case?

• Can't shutdown Ubuntu (Wubi Installation)

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi. The installation went correctly and everything was working fine until I tried to shutdown. I clicked shutdown and then Ubuntu started shutdown, but as soon as I saw the Ubuntu logo with blank dots under, it froze. I had to perform a hard shutdown. After booting my computer back and going into Ubuntu, I tried shutting it down again but this time it took me on a black page with lots and lots of log writing on the screen and after a little while, it stopped writing stuff. I was able to input characters using the keyboard and everything, but it never shutdown. I had to perform a hard shutdown again. Now it always gives me a Ubuntu logo and freezes. What should I do? I know hard shutdowns are bad and want to avoid them. Is there anyway to make shutdowns work? I tried a reboot and it also froze on the Ubuntu logo. Sony VAIO Model E SVE17115FDB Laptop. Graphic card - AMD RADEON HD 7650M (and it installed correctly in Ubuntu). BIOS - H2O Bios. Processor - Intel i7-3612QM. Edit: I only installed the AMD/ATI proprietary drivers FGLRX, not the AMD/ATI post release drivers because they keep showing an error message. Here is jockey.log. Edit 2: Here is the log that i mentioned before that appeared on my screen, it appeared after i tried reinstalling my AMD driver but failed so i reinstalled the other one.   I'm having similar issues with logging into ubuntu server. chief problem is that once I enter my user name & hit enter, I can't enter anything ffor my password - it won't accept any keystrokes until I press Ctrl+any key. Once I've pressed Ctrl+ any key, I'm able to type again, but have never been able to enter any more than 3 characters before the 60 sec time limit. This problem is present on fresh installs of both 10.04 & 9.10. Part of the problem is lkely to be my antique pc which is an old Emachines Trigems I850 based mbd and an equally ancient Nvidia 4x AGP video card. Initially I was going to install Ubuntu 10.10, but with ORCA running with both screen reader and full screen magnification crashed the system & smoked a stick of Rambus memory. Is there any fix to this problem? Jeff

• Microsoft Office 2011 Mac: Reminders don't interact correctly with Spaces or Expose

  I'm using Microsoft Office 2011 on Snow Leopard. I'm a heavy Spaces user. Whenever Microsoft Office Reminders pops up a reminder, it brings up the reminder in my current screen. However, if I do something else before dismissing the reminder pop-up, I can't easily find the pop-up again: Clicking on the icon in the dock does nothing and the pop-up vanishes when you use Expose. Left with no other choice, I simply end up clicking through each screen, moving windows around to hunt down the pop-up again. Is there any easier way to locate that pop-up? Is there a way to get the pop-up to behave like a normal window?
