• Backdoor Strategy- opinion needed.

  I'm creating an application to track publications and grants for a university. Professors will need to put they CV into the system when it is up and running. Yeah, right. The person in charge is planning on hiring someone to input all of the information, but my questions is how? The strategy I'm thinking of is to install a backdoor. The lucky undergrad can log in as any professor using the backdoor. Once all the data is removed, the backdoor can be removed. Doing so would probably be as simple as editing out a comment in the config file. The IT guys would still have access, but since they control the machines, they would have access anyway. Are there any flaws to this strategy?

• Strange IP addresses in tomcat

  Some where I have this in some generic class. public static String getRequestIp (HttpServletRequest request){ String ipaddr = request.getHeader("X-FORWARDED-FOR"); if (ipaddr == null)ipaddr = request.getRemoteAddr(); return ipaddr; } For every request i call that method and in a certain moment i insert a record in a mysql database. In most cases it works normally and i can see a record for every request with a valid ip address in the right field. But sometimes where the IP should be there is something like this. "unknown, 93.186.30.120" or "10.0.1.169, 186.38.84.3" Apache is at the front listening at port 80 and used as proxy to Tomcat that listens at port 8081. My router config would not allow to pass any conection that come by any port other than 80. Any Help? Thanks in advance.

• Asp.Net error reporting with stacktrace

  I have an Asp.Net web site set up to log errors using Log4Net (in global.asax) and redirect users to a custom error page (set up in web.config with: ). On this error page the users have the opportunity to write about what they did when the error occurred and post the description back to us to help fix the problem. My question is this: How do i connect the error stacktrace to the users error report? It appears that .Net has handled the error when it was written to the log file and the custom error page has no information about the stacktrace. If only I could see the stacktrace from the custom error page code-behind my problem would be solved.

• Why do I have a page hit for 404.php after each legitimate pagehit?

  I'm working with an intranet system that, on each page, checks the user's cookie, verifies that they can see the current page based on database permissions, and records a page hit that includes their id and the page URL. I just noticed that in the pagehits table, I see an entry for 404.php (my custom 404 page specified in the Apache config) one second after each legitimate page hit. Is this probably my fault, or does it have something to do with how Apache decides to load the 404 page? I'm using Apache 2.2.14 (Win32) and PHP 5.3.2.

• Rails - Paperclip, getting width and height of image in model

  Trying to get the width and height of the uploaded image while still in the model on the initial save. Any way to do this? Here's the snippet of code I've been testing with from my model. • How can I create an http handler to redirect all traffic to HTML pages?

  Our company would like to redirect all calls to html files on our server to a separate page. The html pages are NOT in an asp.net application. In order to do this, I've been writing and IIS Handler in asp.net. 1) Is this possible to add an IIS handler to redirect static content that isn't served by any asp.net engine, i.e. stand alone files on the server? 2) If it is possible, how do I do this? I created an http handler in a class library. In the app.config I added the handler to the and sections. I added the DLL to the GAC, I changed the html mapping to my custom IIS dll and nothing works. Is there a tutorial or explanation from A to B on how to do this? Thanks. E p.s. I'm using IIS 7.5

• How? Encrypt and Decrypt user membership passwords in ASP.NET

  We are creating a new site using ASP.NET membership provider for user registration and log in. Our old system encrypted user passwords so that we could recover them if we needed to. I am having a great deal of trouble figuring out if it is possible to use ASP.NET membership functions to simply encrypt the password when the user registers and then unencrypt it so I can see it. Documentation for this is neigh non-existant. I know how to configure Web.config to have it store passwords as encrypted ala passwordFormat="Hashed" in the provider and assigning a validationKey in the machineKey, however it seems like the password still gets hashed (though perhaps it is just well encrypted). Either way I cannot decifer how the password can be recovered (by us) if neccessary. Thanks!

Config Error This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. However, if I add any gems to my environment.rb: config.gem "authlogic" And run the same generator, I get the following: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. • Handler not yet determined error

  Hello, I don’t know anything about deploying a website, so I probably made some stupid mistake. Anyways, I opened IIS 7 manager, created new virtual directory ( via Add Application ) and pointed it to physical directory where Visual studio saved my Web project. But when I tried to request an .aspx page, browser reported the following error (I won’t post the whole error, but just the interesting bits): Handler: Not yet determined Config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions Logon User: Not yet determined A) why is handler not yet determined? As far as I know, IIS7 does have Asp.Net handler registered?! B) Why wouldn’t IIS have sufficient permissions? Does that mean I should give IIS higher privileges? Or does Asp.Net runtime have insufficient permissions? C) Could the error also be due to the fact that perhaps it expected the user to authenticate itself? I’m assuming this due to Logon user not yet being determined? D) And finally, any ideas how to make it work? thanx

I think the issue may be caused because I am requesting this information in Page_PreInit. I found a solution in a stack overflow article but I don't seem be using it properly to actually make this go. I am not sure what I am missing. Thanks in advance.

• Session sometimes timesout too quick

  I am noticing session timeouts on my asp.net mvc web app randomly without browser being incative for for more than few minutes. My understanding is the default timeout should be 20mins. But sometimes I get a timeout in couple minutes or even less than that. For example after browsing on the site for a while I might get a session timeout when i refresh a page very soon after I enter the page. This is very random but I have seen this happen quite a few times now and I am not sure how I can trace this to see why I loose sessions every once in a while whithout browser being inactive long. I checked my web.config an no timeout value is defined there so I assume it should be 20mins. Hard to debug as this does not occur regularly..

• Custom session state provider needed for DB storage?

  I know this question is related to many others, but please bear with me. I am trying an experiment to store all information in database tables instead of the ASP.NET session. In ASP.NET 4 one can create a custom provider for session. So, again should I implement a Custom Session-State Provider or should I just disable session (in Web.config)? Thanks! From the comments my question can be misunderstood. Hopefully this tidbit will help clarify: I don't want to store the session in the database. I want to store information in the database that you would typically store in the session. One reason why: I don't want to carry around a session on every page, especially if that page doesn't care about 90 percent of the information in the session

• Where to reopen a class in RoR

  I'm attempting to reopen the String class in rails and add a bunch more methods for my app to use. Writing the code isn't a problem - my question is rather about where this code should go. It doesn't make sense to me to reopen a class inside a different model file, because it really has nothing to do with any of the models specifically. I thought perhaps somewhere in config or lib would make sense, but I'm not particularly well versed with RoR yet. To summarize, where would be the most logical place to define class-modifying code?

• Capistrano update causes C: to be placed in the current directory (cygwin)

  When I run cap deploy:update in a directory on my local machine (via cygwin), "C:" magically appears in the directory. Sure enough, I can cd to it and it's my windows C: drive. Now I'm afraid to delete it, but I definitely don't want it in this directory (a rails project under /home/username/blah/blah).   Our project uses an LDAP repository for storing users. In production this will be Active Directory. For development, we seem to have a couple of options: Install an AD LDS instance that everyone uses Install an AD LDS instance on every developer machine We're trying to keep the 'F5' experience as lightweight as possible, so installing things or relying on a central AD store aren't my favorite ideas. There are other LDAP servers, like Open LDAP. I was hoping there might be an LDAP server that simply talks to an XML file. This would allow us to store the XML file in source control and have something that is fast and works. Our nightly builds would still use AD to pick up any differences, but the hope is since we're using LDAP it should Just Work. Can you recommend an LDAP implementation that works well for zero-config shared-nothing development?

In IIS web application setting, i go to "Session State" and set session state as "SQL Server" and provide connection string. In each web application web.config, i add <sessionState mode="SQLServer" allowCustomSqlDatabase="false" sqlConnectionString="data source=server;user id=user;password=password" cookieless="false" timeout="7200" /> I create a session , Session["Data"] = "test" in Web App A and go to Web App B in the same browser to print it Response.Write(Session["Data"]); It shows NOTHING. I can see there are data in table : ASPStateTempApplications and ASPStateTempSessions under ASPState Database. Also, i dont see any error in event log. Can anyone think anything i may do wrong?
