• How Facebook's Ad Bid System Works

  When you are creating an ad on Facebook, you are provided with a "suggested bid" range (e.g., $0.90 - $2.15 USD). According to this page: The suggested bid range is there to help you pick a maximum bid so your ad will be successful. It’s based on how many other advertisers are competing to show their ad to the same audience as you are. I'm interested in understanding what's actually going on (technically) under the hood here. Say a user logs into Facebook. On the server-side, it the HTTP request that the user's browser sent (as part of the login) is handled, and the server needs to figure out which ad to display back to the user. I assume this is where the "bidding" system comes into play? Say that, based on this user's demographics, and based on the audience targeting that several competing advertisers designed their campaign with, let's pretend that Facebook sees a pool of 20 different ads it could return. How does this bidding system help Facebook determine which of the 20 ads it returns to the client-side? I'm guessing that advertisers who "bid more" get prioritized over those who "bid less". But when does this bidding take place? How often does an advertiser need to re-bid? How long is a bid binding for? Once I understand these usage-related concepts behind ads, it will probably be obvious between which of the following "selection strategies" the backend is using: Round robin Prioritized round robin Randomized (doubtful) History-based MVP-based Thanks to anyone who can help point me in the right direction and explain what these suggested bid systems are and how they work.

• Using USB to Ethernet with Linux Ubuntu 12.04

  Being a newbie, Please excuse if the technical Jargon used is not an universally accepted one :) I have a particular device (say device A) whose USB2.0 driver is available from Linux community. Linux UBUNTU12.04 based PC is able to detect that device via the available driver. My requirement is to ensure that PC can exchange the command as well as data with the device A over TCP/IP packets (In other words, instead of just a USB Based driver, there should be a TCP/IP wrapper over the device USB driver and still does the same job as the USB driver was doing before) Bought an USB (Female) to RJ-45 adapter,connected Device A (male) USB to the USB Female end of the adapter and the Ethernet end connected to the router. PC also is connected to the same router so that both Device A and the PC have the IP address in the same subnet range. So the packets produced by the device A can be routed to the PC via some binding( not sure how I can achieve this, but conceptual idea) Here are the issues I can see as of now 1) USB to RJ-45 is just a hardware signal conversion and not a NIC in itself and hence no MAC/IP ADDRESS assigned. Can we bind a virtual NIC created in PC with this connector? 2) Any available USB TO IP command as well as data translation wrappers available? e.g. command for the device A on Ethernet converted to command for the device A on USB which is then acted upon the device as a command from the USB driver There is some missing link in my understanding and hence it would be of great help if you can bounce off some ideas on how I can take this forward so that Device A and PC exchange data over IP.   What is the best way to submit a patch to fix all the damage that LP: #600941 causes? I ask because LP: #600941 was put into every version of Ubuntu still supported at this time. Should I pick a particular version and run ubuntu-bug on it? Should that version be the LTS or Oneiric or Precise (how can I get Precise if I need it?) The story is that after it was pushed out all of our systems started experiencing Nagios nrpe restart failures. Commands like /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart would cause nrpe to stop but not restart. I tracked this down to the way that the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script is calling start-stop-daemon. The issue is that the "stop" stanza in the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script first calls start-stop-daemon which sends SIGTERM to nrpe and then waits only for one second. If nrpe has not exited by that time the pid file will still exist and the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script will remove it. Worse if /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart is used not only will the pid file be removed, the attempt to restart nrpe will fail provided that the nrpe daemon is still tardy in shutting down. The attempt to start under those circumstances will fail because nrpe will still be bound to a socket and the second attempt at binding will cause the nrpe startup to abort. They should have wondered why there was a comment about "sometimes the pid file does not get removed". They should have tested on systems that have a heavy load and therefore slow nrpe response times. The fix is to add --retry 10 or such to the invocation of start-stop-daemon ... --stop ... Thanks

• How to use the unit of work and repository patterns in a service oriented enviroment

  I've created an application framework using the unit of work and repository patterns for it's data layer. Data consumer layers such as presentation depend on the data layer design. For example a CRUD abstract form has a dependency to a repository (IRepository). This architecture works like a charm in client/server environments (Ex. a WPF application and a SQL Server). But I'm looking for a good pattern to change or reuse this architecture for a service oriented environment. Of course I have some ideas: Idea 1: The "Adapter" design pattern Keep the current architecture and create a new unit of work and repository implementation which can work with a service instead of the ORM. Data layer consumers are loosely coupled to the data layer so it's possible but the problem is about the unit of work; I have to create a context which tracks the objects state at the client side and sends the changes to the server side on calling the "Commit" (Something that I think the RIA has done for Silverlight). Here the diagram: ----------- CLIENT----------- | ------------------ SERVER ---------------------- [ UI ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] ---> [ Web Services ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] -> [DB] Idea 2: Add another layer Add another layer (let say "local services" or "data provider"), then put it between the data layer (unit of work and repository) and the data consumer layers (like UI). Then I have to rewrite the consumer classes (CRUD and other classes which are dependent to IRepository) to depend on another interface. • Is it possible to implement an infinite IEnumerable without using yield with only C# code?

  This isn't a practical problem, it's more of a riddle. Problem I'm curious to know if there's a way to implement something equivalent to the following, but without using yield: IEnumerable<T> Infinite<T>() { while (true) { yield return default(T); } } Rules You can't use the yield keyword Use only C# itself directly - no IL code, no constructing dynamic assemblies etc. You can only use the basic .NET lib (only mscorlib.dll, System.Core.dll? not sure what else to include). However if you find a solution with some of the other .NET assemblies (WPF?!), I'm also interested. Don't implement IEnumerable or IEnumerator. Notes The closest I've come yet: IEnumerable<int> infinite = null; infinite = new int[1].SelectMany(x => new int[1].Concat(infinite)); This is "correct" but hits a StackOverflowException after 14399 iterations through the enumerable (not quite infinite). I'm thinking there might be no way to do this due to the CLR's lack of tail recursion optimization. A proof would be nice :)

• Best approach for utility class library using Visual Studio

  I have a collection of classes that I commonly (but not always) use when developing WPF applications. The trouble I have is that if I want to use only a subset of the classes, I have three options: Distribute the entire DLL. While this approach makes code maintenance easier, it does require distributing a large DLL for minimal code functionality. Copy the classes I need to the current application. This approach solves the problem of not distributing unused code, but completely eliminates code maintenance. Maintain each class/feature in a separate project. This solves both problems from above, but then I have dramatically increased the number of files that need to be distributed, and it bloats my VS solution with tiny projects. Ideally, I'd like a combination of 1 & 3: A single project that contains all of my utility classes but builds to a DLL containing only the classes that are used in the current application. Are there any other common approaches that I haven't considered? Is there any way to do what I want? Thank you.

• MVVM Light V4b1 for Windows 8 Consumer Preview (with installer)

  I just pushed the following to Codeplex: A new MVVM Light project template for Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This template appears in the File, New Project dialog and allows you to create a Metro style app already wired with MVVM Light. An updated Windows 8 installer for MVVM Light. Preconditions: This installs MVVM Light for Windows 8 only. You can install it side-by-side with the standard MVVM Light for Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone. Where do I get it? You can download the MSI from: http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/releases/view/85317 What does it do? The installer installs the Windows 8 version of the MVVM Light DLLs, as well as a new project template for an MVVM Light Metro style app, and code snippets. What is missing? Since Windows 8 Developer Preview, I worked on porting the DispatcherHelper class, and it works now. However the EventToCommand behavior is still not available on Windows 8 (because behaviors are not supported on Windows 8 for the moment). Known issues Some testers reported issues with the code snippets installation. Code snippets should appear when you type “mvvm” in your C# code, there is a list of mvvm-prefixed snippets (such as mvvminpc, etc). • Optimization ended up in casting an object at each method call

  I've been doing some optimization for the following piece of code : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color); } After profiling it about 70% of the time spent was in getting a context for drawing and disposing it. I ended up sketching the following overload : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color, BitmapContext bitmapContext) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color, bitmapContext); } Until here no problems, all the user has to do is to pass a context and performance is really great as a context is created/disposed one time only (previously it was a thousand times per second). The next step was to make it generic in the sense it doesn't depend on a particular framework for rendering (besides .NET obvisouly). So I wrote this method : public void DrawLine(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2, int color, IDisposable bitmapContext) { _bitmap.DrawLineBresenham(x1, y1, x2, y2, color, (BitmapContext)bitmapContext); } Now every time a line is drawn the generic context is casted, this was unexpected for me. Are there any approaches for fixing this design issue ?
