• IE7 div boxes with clear: right and float: left - float to top

  Hey, lately i've been slamming my head against my desk to solve this Problem. Didn't work out. I know it can be solved by editing the contents with some clearing elements. Sadly there is some javascript sorting beeing used and the Sourcode is being generated by CMS Components so that would be my last shot. I'm having a few boxes beeing floated alwayes 2 in a row. The boxes have a diffrent height but equal width and are all placed in a container with static width. The link shows the source i need to reproduce the Problem. My Boxes are beeing floated left. I tried to fix this with clear: left on odd and clear: right on even elements. But that only works in ff/ie8/chrome Browsers, not ie7. Example: http://www.i3rutus.de/ie7divfloatexample/ Anyone knows a possibility to fix this Problem by just editing the CSS not the actual XHTML? Problem appears in IE7. IE8, Chrome and FF work fine. • Bugs in Excel's ActiveX combo boxes?

  I have noticed that I get all sorts of annoying errors when: I have ActiveX comboboxes on a worksheet (not an excel form) The comboboxes have event code linked to them (eg, onchange events) I use their listfillrange or linkedcell properties (clearing these properties seems to alleviate a lot of problems) (Not sure if this is connected) but there is data validation on the targeted linkedcell. I program a fairly complex excel application that does a ton of event handling and uses a lot of controls. Over the months, I have been trying to deal with a variety of bugs dealing with those combo boxes. I can't recall all the details of each instance now, but these bugs tend to involve pointing the listfillrange and linkedcell properties at named ranges, and often have to do with the combo box events triggering at inappropriate times (such as when application.enableevents = false). These problems seemed to grow bigger in Excel 2007, so that I had to give up on these combo boxes entirely (I now use combo boxes contained in user forms, rather than directly on the sheets). Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, was there a graceful solution? I have looked around with Google and so far haven't spotted anyone with similar issues. Some of the symptoms I end up seeing are: Excel crashing when I start up (involves combobox_onchange, listfillrange-named range on another different sheet, and workbook_open interactions). (note, I also had some data validation on the the linked cells in case a user edited them directly.) Excel rendering bugs (usually when the combo box changes, some cells from another sheet get randomly drawn over the top of the current sheet) Sometimes it involves the screen flashing entirely to another sheet for a moment. Excel losing its mind (or rather, the call stack) (related to the first bullet point). Sometimes when a function modifies a property of the comboboxes, the combobox onchange event fires, but it never returns control to the function that caused the change in the first place. The combobox_onchange events are triggered even when application.enableevents = false. Events firing when they shouldn't (I posted another question on stack overflow related to this). At this point, I am fairly convinced that ActiveX comboboxes are evil incarnate and not worth the trouble. I have switched to including these comboboxes inside a userform module instead. I would rather inconvenience users with popup forms than random visual artifacts and crashing (with data loss).

• javascript - multiple dependent/cascading/chained select boxes on same form

  I'm populating select box options via jquery and json but I'm not sure how to address multiple instances of the same chained select boxes within my form. Because the select boxes are only rendered when needed some records will have ten sets of chained select boxes and others will only need one. How does one generate unique selects to support the auto population of secondary select options? • Grouping rectangles (getting the bounding boxes of rects)

  What is a good, fast way to get the "final" bounding boxes of a set of random (up to about 40, not many) rectangles? By final I mean that all bounding boxes don't intersect with any other. Brute force way: in a double for loop, for each rect, test for intersection against every other rect. The intersecting rects become a new rect (replaced), indicating the bounding box. Start over and repeat until no intersection is detected. Because the rects are random every time, and the rect count is relatively small, collision detection using spatial hashing seems like overkill. Is there a way to do this more effectively?

• Syslog - capturing event logs from Win2k boxes

  Hi all, I asked this question in SuperUser without much luck and so I am posting it here to see if anyone can assist. We have a central syslog server and we want it to capture event log events from Windows hosts. We are specifically interested in logging service start/stop events. We installed "Eventlog to Syslog" on these windows hosts and all works well with XP hosts (Events come from Service Control Manager). However, we are having issues with Win2k hosts. For some reason, service start/stop events do not get logged in the Event Log for Win2k hosts. I got another friend from another company to test on a Win2k host and he does get start/stop events on them. I have searched around for local audit policies i need to enable but with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Replication in PG 9 between Windows and Linux boxes

  I have PostgreSQL 9 running on Windows 2003 SP2. I am trying to replicate it on a Fedora 12 system running PostgreSQL 9 as well. I am hitting this error message: /usr/pgsql-9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/ -p 5432 2011-02-11 17:43:26 ISTFATAL: incorrect checksum in control file Because of firewall restrictions, I could not follow the official instructions to the letter. Instead, I zipped the contents of the data directory when the server was offline and copied that to the Linux box. I ran a sha1deep on both directories and there were no mismatches. I changed the rights so that only the postgres user and group had access to the files. Now, what can I do for replication to work? I tried with a 'pg_dumpall', but the system complains that the database IDs do no match.

  I'm spending a lot of time setting up new Centos 6 instances. I use a VCS (Subversion) for most of the config files and all of the webapp source files (Github), but even with excellent package managers (like yum, npm, easy_install, etc.) it still takes time. I'd like to get to the point where I could try out a new potential web host by just signing up for an account, logging in and automatically sucking my standardised config onto the box. I know there are a set of tools that can help: Puppet Chef Vagrant and a set of services that sell solutions: [Jumpbox] http://www.jumpbox.com/ [BitNami Cloud] http://bitnami.org/cloud I don't mind investing time in learning a new tool, but as a no-budget start-up, I'm keen to keep monthly costs down. My biggest concern is that time spent on the server config is time away from the codebase, and that's where I think my team and I should be investing our energy, at least until we get funded and scale up a bit. I'd be grateful of some recommendations for which way to jump on config: stick with SSH and manual deploys, at least until you get big. bite the bullet and learn [say] puppet. You may only use it 8-10 times, but it pays to have such an easy tunable server bootstrap. don't bother, just pay the $100/month for a standard config service. It'll cost you $1000/year, but you should focus on the code. Other questions in this domain I use quite a complex stack (Drupal, Zend Server, MySQL, PHP, MongoDB, Python, django), but are there standard(ish) setups that include these or that I could build upon more quickly? Are the configs optimised for small, medium, large VPS (1GB, 4GB, 16GB)? How secure are they?

• UPS recommendations for three grey boxes?

  Hey all We have a series of grey-box style computers acting as servers at my workplace (rather than rack-mount). We were looking to get Uninterruptible Power Supplies for them. However, I'm not sure how many at what capacity are required. I'd assume it would be a good idea to hook the peripherals in as well - there's a 18.5" LCD monitor with a KVM, along with a couple of USB hard drives that require power. I currently have the most vital machine hooked up to a cheap (temporary) UPS, but it's probably close to worse than nothing. I'm looking for reasonable value for money, though I can probably negotiate with my boss on price range. I recognise that I may well need to buy two (or even three) UPSs to support the three machines. Any recommendations?

  Whe right clicking in windows that have popup menus you can hold mouse button, wait until popup appears and release above the desired item to click it. This is different from Windows that have popup appear only on mouse release. And it leads to accident menu item clicking sometimes. • HP LaserJet 1320 printing black boxes instead of text

  I have an HP LaserJet 1320, running off of the HP PCL5 64-bit Universal Driver (Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit). When printing, anything other than body text is blacked out. I.e. on an email, where the 'To...', 'From...', 'CC...' and 'Subect' are usually shown at the top, there is just a black box. And on Word documents, anything to do with Track Changes is also blacked out. I have tried restarting the Print Spooler, and reinstalling the printer, but this does not help. Does anybody know why this is happening?

• Microsoft Outlook: show multi-day appointments as boxes in calendar day and week view

  I would like to show appointments spanning several days the same way as appintments within a single day. Single day appointments are shown with a white or colored box, covering the day horizontally. Multi-day appointments are shown in the day/week header and are indicated blue or purple on the left side of a day. This happens even if a multi-day appointment is not an all-day appointment (i.e. checkbox is off) and I have a start and end time. I frequently have a hard time seeing appointment overlaps wenn acceping single day appointments. Therefore I am looking for multi-day appointments shown the same way as single day appointments. I am on Outlook 2003.

• Permanent fix for unicode characters not displaying correctly (as boxes)

  Please read this entire message before replying. First I know how to fix the issue on a temporary basis. I am looking for a permanent fix. I work with foreign language files a lot. Unfortunately sometimes all the unicode characters in windows explorer, notepad, and other places (as rendered by windows, probably GDI) do not display correctly. That is they display as square blocks, where as they had just been displaying correctly. There are countless methods to temporarily correct the issue. But again, I want a way to permanently resolve the issue. What I have tried: The silly "Hide fonts based on language settings". This setting only applies to what fonts you see in the fonts folder and font dropdowns. It doesn't disable foreign fonts (doesn't work, or if it does, it is temporary). Deleting the font cache file and rebooting (works.. usually, temporary solution). Changing my locale and then back (sometimes works, temporary solution). Rebooting my PC and getting lucky (50-50 chance, temporary solution). Changing my keyboard input/adding foreign keyboard (temporary solution that only seems to work once). Reinstalling windows (temporary solution, sometimes lasts a few months though, I have done this 7 times across 3 computers) What I have not tried: Buying Windows Ultimate and installing the interface packs. This is not a solution. I can't read Japanese/Chinese and I do not want my interface in those languages. What I will not do: Switch to a different brand operating system (unix, linux, mac os x) Switch to an older version of windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc). So can anyone recommend a permanent fix for the problem?

• Best Practice: Migrating Email Boxes (maildir format)

  So here's the situation. I've got about 20,000 maildir email accounts chewing up a several hundred GB of space on our email server. Maildir by nature keeps thousands of tiny a** little files, instead of one .mbox file or the like... So i need to migrate all of these several millions of files from one server to the other, for both space and life-cycle reasons. the conventional methods i would use all work just fine. rsync is the option that comes immediately to mind, however i wanted to see if there are any other "better" options out there. Rsync not handling multi-threaded transfers in this situation sucks because it never actually gets up to speed and saturates my network connection, because of this the transfer from one server to another will take hours beyond hours, when it shouldn't really take more then one or two. I know this is highly opinionated and subjective and will therefore be marked community wiki.

• Help with Jquery + Masonry Plugin: How to expand/collapse boxes to reveal content

  I'm using the masonry jquery plugin on a project: (http://desandro.com/resources/jquery-masonry) Basically I have a set of boxes (thumbnails) in a grid. When one is clicked, I want it to expand to a larger size to show more content (additional images and text). I'm struggling with how to make the thumbnail dissappear and then have new content appear in the expanded box. I don't know how to make the new content appear or where to store it on my page--and it needs to have a close button? The creator of the plugin gave me a quick tip for the expanding part, but the code I'm using has a set height and width and I want them to be variable depending on how much content is in the expanded state. The problem is that most of the time, the text gets clipped by the edges of the figure. I am using this as a workaround: set(gca,'Position',[0.25 0.25 0.5 0.5]); As you can see, I am simply adding a larger border around the plot so that there is more room for the text. While this scaling works for one zoom level, if I maximize my plot window I get way too much empty space, and if I shrink my plot window, I get clipping again. Is there a more intelligent way to add these labels to use the minimum amount of space while making sure that the text does not get clipped?
